Arthur Abraham got the split decision nod without much controversy, and Martin Murray once again came up just short of a world title.
Martin Murray came up just that little bit short once again, and Arthur Abraham retained the WBO super middleweight title today in Hannover, Germany, on split decision scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 112-115. BLH scored the fight 114-113 for Abraham, with an 11th round point deduction against Murray the difference on our card.
Abraham (44-4, 29 KO) started slow, which is nothing new for the 35-year-old veteran titleholder, but picked up his pace starting in the fourth round, and was able to win the majority of the rounds from there on our card, though many were quite close. Murray (32-3-1, 15 KO) never went away, and was in the fight until the very end, competing on a pretty even level with Abraham.
The point deduction came as a result of excessive holding, with Murray, 33, having been warned a few times prior to that, and given at least one stern talking-to over the course of the bout.
For England’s Murray, this is a third very close call in a world title bout, of the four he’s had in his career. In 2011, he fought Felix Sturm to a draw in Germany, and in 2013 was arguably robbed of the middleweight championship in Argentina against Sergio Martinez. His other world title opportunity came in February of this year, as he went to Monaco and was smashed by Gennady Golovkin, and stopped in the 11th round.
Murray moved up to super middleweight following the loss to Golovkin, and was looking to finally take that world title at his new weight. But it just wasn’t to be once again. He’s now 0-4 in world title fights, while Abraham improves to 19-3 in world title fights over his career.

Training is underway for Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) as he prepares for his WBO World Super Middleweight Championship contest with Britain’s Martin Murray (32-2-1, 15 KOs) on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.
The ever-critical Wegner has already set about changing the 35 year-old’s training regime. Removing any distractions by taking his protégé from the bustling Max-Schmeling-Gym in Berlin to a secluded training camp in Kienbaum’s Olympic Centre.
‘’Arthur must focus all his energy and attention on this fight or risk losing his World title,’’ said the star coach. ‘’And that is why we need to complete isolation. My job is to ensure he is in top championship condition, and currently his fitness is not where I would like it to be. Now, he must step up his efforts or prepare for defeat.’’
Abraham, used to the 73 year-old’s exacting standards, offers a simple reply when faced with his coach’s criticism, admitting: ‘’Mr Wegner is always right!’’

While Jimmy Kelly is honoured to be getting into the ring with Liam Smith for the Liverpudlian’s first defence of his WBO world light-middleweight, the feeling certainly isn’t mutual.
The unbeaten Manchester man has landed himself a surprise crack at the world title, despite never having contested a British or Commonwealth title fight.
And Smith says it’s time Kelly puts his money where his mouth is even if it means teaching him a lesson.
“The couple of names we first asked for couldn’t get done and the fight is in five weeks time so we needed to hurry up,” said Smith.
“Jimmy Kelly is number eight in the rankings and he has been using my name for long enough, so now it’s time for him to back it up.
“That’s why I have that bit of fire in me because I was fuming with him for even mentioning me in interviews.
“He hasn’t won a British title and yet he’s talking about me. He’s got his wish now and I’m going to show him how wrong he was to call me out.”
Despite what Smith sees as a straightforward defence, there is little chance he’ll be taking Kelly’s challenge lightly. The Wythenshawe boxer has racked up a decent 16-0 record, claiming the WBO inter-continental title last time out against Martin Fidel Rios.
“There is no way in the world I’m going in underestimating him,” said Beefy. “I have always said a true champion defends his title; I have won and defended the British title in one of my best performances, and I’m going to do that again.
“Without sounding bad, I’m going to wipe the floor with Jimmy Kelly and show the difference in levels; why I’m there and why he shouldn’t. He should be fighting for a British or Commonwealth title, not fighting me.”
The 27-year-old feels more than confident of adding another name his list of victims and insists that not even Kelly’s corner believes he can do it.
He said: “His coach came and sat next to mine last time out in Manchester and said ‘we know we’re not ready for Liam, that fight is down the line’. This was at his last fight, but he has it now, in his next fight. I’ll prove they were right.
“For me, this is just wages for Christmas. It means I go on holiday and have a drink on Jimmy Kelly while lying on a beach somewhere.”
He added: “Do you think Jimmy Kelly is going to beat me on the back of Stephen winning his final eliminator, me winning a world title and Callum doing what he has done to Rocky Fielding? We’re absolutely flying; no way Jimmy Kelly is going to beat me December 19, not a chance.
“I’ll put everything into place and stop him late; don’t be surprised if I stop him early though.”
He continued: “I think he forgets that I chose to go to Manchester to fight a Manchester kid, it doesn’t bother me. I have done it before and I’ll do it again. He’s not the biggest ticket seller and I’ll not have the whole of the MEN shouting against me, but even if he did, it can’t help him.”
Moving forward, Smith wants to put the Mosley talk to one side, but does want to look forward to a big fight in 2016.
“I’m hoping to get a big name for April/May or maybe get on that February bill with a decent name. Whatever comes about, I’m happy. If I’m not happy defending a world title then I don’t know what will ever make me happy.”

Vasyl Lomachenko outclassed Romulo Koasicha in Las Vegas and immediately called for bigger and better nights.
The Ukrainian superstar controlled the fight from the start ahead of Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios’ showdown at the Thomas & Mach Center, parading his undoubted talent in regular and fluent bursts before finishing it off in the 10th rounds.
A succession of unanswered punches saw Koasicha in trouble before a left to the stomach, followed by a brutal one to the ribs, left him on his knees and unable to beat the count.
Lomachenko (5-1-KO3) kept the WBO featherweight title that he picked up on his second professional fight in 2013 but the Seoul Olympic gold medallist is already looking to show his skills on bigger stages.
“I want to bring something new to boxing,” Lomachenko said.
“I want to be known to fans and appreciated as a ‘boxer-painter’ in regards to speed, footwork, punching power – an art form inside the ring.
“I have looked at videos of many great champions like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Frazier who each had special qualities.
“I never say one particular fighter is the best ever because each has a special unique style of fighting.”
Promoter Bob Arum hinted at a showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux, who has been stripped of both his super-bantamweight world titles and is now up in the lightweight division with Lomachenko.
Another former 122lb champion, Leo Santa Cruz, has also moved up while there is still talk of Lomachenko giving Gary Russell Jr a rematch, having beaten the American ace in March 2013 to become a record-breaking world champion.

WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley Jr. (33-1-1, 13 KOs) was supposed to beat Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios (33-3-1), but not many predicted he’d stop his rugged opponent.
On Saturday night in Las Vegas, that’s what Bradley did, scoring a ninth-round technical knockout over Rios in spectacular fashion. Per the HBO broadcast, Bradley outlanded Rios 254-81 in the fight.
Under the tutelage of new trainer Teddy Atlas, Bradley employed more movement than has customarily been part of his repertoire. The new wrinkles worked, as Bradley was smarter and at his best from a technical standpoint.
Rios appeared to win just one round before a left hook to the body in the ninth put him down on both knees. A right uppercut grazed Rios before he went down, but the body shot did the damage. Rios would get to his feet, but a moderate flurry to his body moments later brought on an end to the fight.
Body shots were a key part of Bradley’s attack all night, as he looked to have hurt Rios on several occasions with blows to the midsection. As good as Bradley looked all night, Rios looked like a shell of the fighter who once held a title at 140 pounds. Michael Woods of the Sweet Science had a good assessment of the bout:

Rios made weight Friday but ballooned up to 170 pounds on the day of the fight, per the HBO broadcast. The extra weight didn’t help him, as he was even slower than usual.
When the fight was over, the 29-year-old Rios was emotional, announcing this was his last time in the ring. HBO Boxing shared Rios’ quote:
“My body isn’t the same anymore. I’ve been in a lot of wars. It might be time to hang it up.” – @Brandon_Rios1#BradleyRios
Rios’ retirement seems to make sense despite his relatively young age. He has seen his best days in the ring, and there’s nothing left for him to do but take more punishment for lower paydays than he’s become accustomed to.
If he has the financial means, retirement is the smartest move he can make at this point in his career.
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix heard the announcement, but he wasn’t buying it: Brandon Rios says he will retire after the loss to Tim Bradley. Don’t count on it. Fighters like that, they often come back.
Only time will tell whether Rios’ retirement sticks. As for Bradley, there’s new life to his career. With Atlas in his corner, it seems as though Bradley will, at the least, have the best game plan in place for each of his fights.

It was chilling stuff, and it reached Bradley. That’s something that former trainer Joel Diaz wasn’t always able to do. Bradley’s career has been littered with ill-advised slugging and careless defense late in fights. He had no such lapses in concentration against Rios.
Prior to this bout, most fans would have had no interest in seeing Bradley face Manny Pacquiao for a third time. Not everyone would be on board for a trilogy yet, but one more impressive performance would probably get people excited to see Desert Storm battle Pac-Man again.
If not Pacquiao, then perhaps a date with current WBO junior welterweight champion Terence Crawford is in order. Either bout would be intriguing, as the boxing world should be eager to see what else the new and improved Bradley can accomplish.

On November 2, 2015 we received communication from Mr. Von Appen on behalf of Marco Huck, wherein they express their intention to appeal the October 20, 2015 Resolution of the World Championship Committee denying the petition for a direct return match with current WBO Jr. Heavyweight Champion Krzysztof Glowacki. I am forwarding this to you in your capacity as Chairman of the WBO Complaints and Grievance Committee and in accordance with Article 3 of the WBO Appeals Regulations and Section 34 of the WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests, establishing that:
Any Appeal, Complaint, or Grievance (hereinafter referred to as a “Complaint”) shall be submitted in writing to the President. Any WBO participant may submit a Complaint. The President is authorized to attempt to resolve any such Complaint by alternative dispute resolutions such as negotiation or mediation. If, after ten (10) days of attempting methods of alternative resolution, the President determines such methods of alternative dispute resolution will not fully and finally resolve the Complaint, he shall submit such Complaint for determination to the Complaints and Grievance Committee (Article 3 of Appeals); and,
Any WBO Participant, including, but not limited to a Boxer, Manager, or Promoter who is or could be affected by a determination of the World Championship Committee who wishes to contest such a determination must, as his or her sole and exclusive remedy, file a Complaint pursuant to the WBO Appeal Regulations. In all cases the complaint shall be referred to the WBO President, who may attempt for a reasonable period to resolve the complaint amicably. The WBO President may reject a complaint or he may refer it to the Complaints and Grievance Committee, which shall determine the complaint or grievance in accordance with the WBO Appeals Regulations (Section 34 WBO Regulations).

Two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist and reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko (4-1, 2 KOs) kicked off Fight Week today with a training camp media workout at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif. Lomachenko will defend his title on Saturday night against WBO #7 world-rated contender Romulo Koasicha (24-4,14 KOs), of San Luis Potosi, Mexico.
Here is what Lomachenko and his manager Egis Klimas had to say:
Vasyl Lomachenko: “I want to bring something new to boxing. I want to be known to fans and appreciated as a ‘boxer-painter’ in regards to speed, footwork, punching power — an art form inside the ring. I have looked at videos of many great champions like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Frazier who each had special qualities. I never say one particular fighter is the best ever because each has a special unique style of fighting. Every fight has challenges. I looked at some video of my opponent who fought Lee Selby. In the middle of that fight, my opponent did a transition and fought with a different type of style against Selby. These are the situations you must deal with on the night of a fight.
“Who would I like to fight some day? Getting Salido back into the ring would be something I would like to see.” Lomachenko, suffered his only loss to Salido via split decision in his second pro fight after Salido came in overweight.
Egis Klimas: “We have not seen the best of Vasyl Lomachenko, maybe something like 40 percent of what we are going to see. He pushes himself 120 percent. He likes to spar 15 rounds daily against four different opponents. No one trains harder. He proved he was the best amateur boxer and he will prove that he is the best professional fighter.”
Lomachenko vs. Koasicha will be the co-main event to the 12-round welterweight rumble between two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY JR., (32-1-1, 12 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., in his second reign as World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, and former world champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS (33-2-1, 23 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif. Bradley and Rios fought in Fights of the Year in 2013 and 2012, respectively.

Junior lightweight titlist Roman “Rocky” Martinez and former titleholder Orlando Salido fought two exciting, close fights in 2015 to add another chapter to the great Puerto Rico-versus-Mexico boxing rivalry.
Now they are headed for a third fight in early 2016.
Both fighters and their handlers were at the WBO’s annual convention last week in Orlando, Florida, where the sanctioning body approved a third fight between them.
“There is no doubt in my mind that I won the second fight, but the judges didn’t see it that way,” Salido said. “So I think the only right thing to do is fight a third time to determine who really is the best of the two. It seems that we are made for each other, and the fights are getting better. The first one was good, the second was better and the third will be the best.”
On April on Martinez’s turf in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Martinez, 32, knocked Mexico’s Salido, 34, down twice, and Salido had a point deducted for low blows in an otherwise highly competitive fight. In the end, Martinez won a unanimous decision in a fight of the year candidate and took Salido’s 130-pound world title.
They met in a rematch on Sept. 12 in Las Vegas in the co-feature of the Floyd Mayweather-Andre Berto welterweight world title fight and put on another tremendous show. This time Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) retained the title by split draw in another hellacious battle that most thought Salido (42-13-3, 29 KOs) deserved to win.
“We feel that he should have gotten the win, but it did not happen that way in September,” said Sean Gibbons, who manages Salido. “I am happy that everyone is working on getting this third fight done, especially the champ and his team and that the WBO is good with it. I know we will get it done, and it’s going to be another great war.”

Although all eyes in boxing were on Orlando, Florida this week as the World Boxing Organization held its 28th annual convention, one story jumped out during the convention: the imminent emergence of the WBO in what is perhaps the greatest untapped market in boxing. A new face that created the most excitement on the opening day as Mr. Shahe Ali, President of the Indian Professional Boxing Association (IPBA) was in attendance representing India and South Asia. After being introduced to the President of the WBO, he received a warm welcome from the members in attendance. Mr. Ali has expressed a desire to see professional boxing finally make its mark in India, one of the most lucrative and untapped markets for the sport. Mr. Ali expressed his desire to not only promote professional boxing in India, but to also see the WBO grow in India as well. He reiterated that the values of the IPBA, courage, determination, respect, and a passion for boxing, motivated him to come to Orlando to discuss his plans for the sport of boxing in India He also discussed his plans to host a WBO world title fight as early as next year in India, a move that would be a historic event for the sport of boxing. So far only one professional fight card has taken place in India.
“Our main aim it to promote and establish professional boxing in India,” Mr. Ali said, “We want the entire nation to fall in love with the sport.”
Although Mr. Ali expressed his view that boxing remains “the world’s second most played sport” he noted that, as of yet it does not command a significant fan following in India. However, he remains confident that the IPBA could soon change that.
“India has a huge population and we have great amateurs,” Mr. Ali said. “But they don’t have the opportunity (to fight professional).”
Although Mr. Ali has expressed a desire to work with all sanctioning bodies, including the WBA, WBC, and IBF, he was excited to hear of some of the plans set forth by the WBO. WBO member Danny Leigh expressed a desire to see professional boxing brought up correctly. He stressed that with the help of Mr. Leigh and WBO Vice President Leon Panoncillo, the Professional Boxing Commission of China (which Panoncilo and Leigh helped establish) will work with all parties in India to see that fights are properly sanctioned and that the commission is brought up correctly.
“Eventually they will work with all of the sanctioning bodies,” Mr. Leigh said of the proposed Indian boxing commission. “But right now they are working on the next show in India. Now that we are succeeding in China, we want to transfer that template to India.”
Mr. Leigh expressed a desire to see the Indian boxing commission follow the template set in China and reach a world standard shortly. He also expressed a desire to see a world class main event brought to India, even indicating a desire to see a WBO world title fight hosted there next year. IPBA promoted one card this year in India which was headlined by a WBC regional belt. The fight exceeded all expectations with over 25,000 fans in attendance.
Mr. Ali also envisioned a boxing league not unlike the “League of Fists” in China, where young Indian fighters would take part in a tournament to crown one of them Indian champion. The League of Fists tournament in China has become a popular event in which Chinese fighters are the exclusive participants. Their popularity in China has helped establish boxing in the country and Mr. Ali recognizes that it is a formula that can help establish boxing in India as well.
IPBA plans to promote events beginning with an emphasis on both building up boxing at a grass root level as well as exposing Indian boxing fans to world class international events: to give the young Indian fighters the exposure while also allowing them to emerge as not only domestic talents, but international talents.
Their aim and endeavor is to bring the sport of boxing in India to be at a level on par with other sports, so that the athletes get the best facilities and opportunities and are able to improve their standard of life.
Mr. Ali personally thanked WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel, WBO Vice President for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo, and WBO member Danny Leigh for their efforts to bring professional boxing to India.

The WBA Championships Committee has redesignated WBA super bantamweight “super” champion Guillermo Rigondeaux as “Champion in Recess.” The move was made in light of Rigondcaux’s impressive record and accomplishments, the delays associated with his various managerial/promoter disputes, and the loss of his unification status (he was stripped by the WBO for inactivity earlier this week). Rigondeaux must come out of recess and face the reigning champion on or before May 1, 2016.
The WBA has also authorized a special permit for champion 122lb “regular” champ Scott Quigg to participate in a unification bout with IBF champion Carl Frampton, subject to compliance with all other WBA rules and payment of all applicable fees.

WBA super bantamweight “super” champion Guillermo Rigondeaux was stripped of the WBO title earlier this week and lost the WBA belt today (although he remains champion in recess). The reason for both moves was inactivity. However, Rigo does apparently have a fight lined up against TBA on December 4th in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and tickets are on sale. James “Lights Out” Toney is also scheduled to appear. The last time they had boxing in Ottawa was 1998 with Otis Grant defending his WBO title.

Terence Crawford successfully made the first defense of his newly acquired WBO junior welterweight title by stopping Dierry Jean on Saturday in front of hometown crowd at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
The end of the bout came in the 10th frame after referee Tony Weeks called a halt to the contest at 2 minutes and 30 seconds of the round to save Jean from continued punishment. Jean (29-2, 20 KOs) had been down twice in the fight, once in the first round and again in the ninth.
“When I’m at home I feel revived, I feel the electricity,” Crawford told HBO’s Max Kellerman during his post-fight interview. “I just want to go in there and put on a good show.”
And that he did. Crawford (27-0, 19 KOs) commanded the action from the opening bell behind a southpaw stance and an active, pawing right jab that systematically broke down a game but ineffective Jean and left him open to solid right hooks and combinations. Jean landed sporadic straight rights from the distance, but spent the majority of the fight on the defense and trying to get passed the champs jab.
CompuBox numbers had Crawford landing 169 punches out of 533 thrown, Jean landed 51 out of 340 thrown.

The fight opened with the boxers meeting in the middle of the ring and feeling each other out with long distance jabs, Crawford in an orthodox stance. Both vied for positioning and dominance for the first half of the round, but it was Jean who took the first step back. Crawford tried out the southpaw stance for size and found a good fit as he knocked Jean to canvas with a hard right.
Crawford came out in a southpaw stance for the second round and stayed that way for the rest of the fight. They pawed at each other with the their lead hands in the middle of the ring, before Jean finally took to the perimeter, slowly circling counter-clockwise and pressuring behind an active jab. This began to set the tenor for the rest of the encounter.
The following round continued with the established tendancy, Crawford pressing forward and landing right jabs and hooks and occasional combinations, with Jean on the back foot and lunging with his right hand periodically and getting caught in the corners or against the ropes.
The eighth round brought back memories of the recent Timothy Bradley vs. Jessie Vargas debacle, when ref Pat Russell prematurely stopped the fight after confusing the 10-second warning with the last bell of the fight. This time it happened to Tony Weeks, who may have saved Jean, who was being pummeled at the end of the round, from a kayo by stopping the action of the eighth round at the 10-second warning.
In the ninth round, a straight left from Crawford created an opening and champ capitalized on it by following up with a 1-2 that knocked down Jean for a second time in the fight.
Crawford came looking to close the show in the 10th round, backing Jean up against the ropes and landing with combinations to the head and body. Crawford was on the hunt and serving up the offense as the end of the round neared. He caught Jean with a 1-2-1 combination that put the challenger on the run, Crawford caught up and landed two hard lefts, and that was all the referee had to see to wave off the rest of the fight.
One of boxing’s recent young breakaway stars, undefeated champion and Boxing Writers Association of America’s (BWAA) ‘2014 Fighter of the Year’ Terence Crawford lifted the WBO 135 pound lightweight world title in March of last year by ousting Ricky Burns in the Brit’s native Scotland.
Having defended the lightweight title twice, by knocking out Cuban phenom Yuriorkis Gamboa and handily outpointing Raymundo Beltran, 28-year-old Crawford moved up in weight to the junior welterweight 140-pound division and stopped Thomas Dulorme in April to claim the vacant WBO title which he defended on Saturday.
With word on the street that Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is looking to pair up Crawford with another of his star fighters, none other than the might Manny Pacquiao, Max Kellerman asked Crawford for his thoughts on the possible match.
“I’m ready,” answered Crawford without hesitation. “Bob, make it happen.”
The crowd loved it.
Fighting out of Montreal, Canada, Dierry Jean, a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, entered the fight having outpointed a fading Jerry Belmontes in June and KO’d Dominican journeyman in March of this year.
Before Saturday’s loss, Jean’s sole professional defeat had come at the hands Lamont Peterson in January of 2014. The 33-year old, who entered the ring ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 6 by the WBO, holds wins over Cleotis Pendarvis, Lanardo Tyner, and Ivan Cano.

Liam Smith has become the new WBO world super-welterweight champion after seeing off John Thompson with a seventh-round knockout in Manchester.
The 27-year-old Smith was given the Twitter vote of confidence by England and Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney prior to the bout for the vacant belt, and the Liverpudlian seemed to take heart as he slowly grew into the fight following a defensive first few rounds.
By the time the sixth round came Smith, one of four boxing brothers, was on the rise thanks to a few well-placed jabs and he produced the decisive punch in the seventh, leaving the referee to wave the fight in his favour.
Smith, who extended his run to 21-0-1, said: “I can’t describe how I feel right now, it just hasn’t sunk in, but I can tell how much it means to everyone around me.
“I’d be a liar if I said I never looked past Thompson but the situation that it was, I just did. I seen Shane Mosley calling out Cornelius Bundrage last week and he doesn’t even have a world title. I have the world title now, so Shane Mosley should be calling me out.
“These are massive fights and massive names. People chase world titles and I have one so they’ve got to chase me now. I’m excited to see what names I get offered now.
“I don’t really care where I defend my title but I have fulfilled one dream and now another dream is to win a world title in America. I would love to defend it back home too; I’m defending a world title wherever and that’s just amazing.”

WBA/WBO flyweight world champion Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (33-2, 24 KOs) scored an impressive and dominating knockdown-filled tenth round KO over determined challenger Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (39-6-1, 28 KOs) in a grudge match at the Centro De Convenciones in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. Estrada knocked down Marquez twice in round six, twice more in round seven, once round nine, and twice in round ten before the bout was finally stopped. Time was 1:16.

In the best fight of the night, WBO junior lightweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-3, 17 KOs) retained his title with a controversial twelve round draw against four-time world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-13-3, 29 KOs). The bout was a rematch of their fight of the year candidate fight from earlier this year, won by Martinez. This fight was even better.
Salido came out aggressively, applying intense pressure to Martinez. Salido dropped Martinez in round three, then Martinez floored Salido in the same round. As the bout progressed, Salido’s pressure was relentless. In the late rounds, Salido’s bodywork had paid dividends as Martinez’ movement was greatly curtailed. It was a war until the final bell. By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) plans on taking the fight to #3 WBO challenger Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs) this Saturday night in their rematch at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Martinez, 32, had a great deal of success in slugging with the 34-year-old Salido in their fight last April in beating him by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109.
Martinez knocked Salido down in the 3rd and 5th rounds. Salido also had a point deducted for throwing a low blow in the 11th. Without the knockdowns and the point deduction, Martinez would have clearly lost the fight. He definitely struggled in many of the rounds from the pressure from Salido, but the knockdowns saved his hide.
“Everyone saw that the first fight against Salido was a true war. This time around, I’m planning to give my fans the same type of fight,” Martinez said, via ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael. “I predict a nonstop action slugfest.”
It’s definitely in Martinez’s best interest to try and turn the fight into a war from the 1st round on, because if he can get another knockdown or two in the first six rounds of the contest, it might be enough for him to cruise the rest of the way.
Salido is a slow starter, and that’s when Martinez has the chance to drop him and build a commanding lead that puts him well behind. Salido is good at rallying from behind, but not when he’s as far behind as he was against Martinez last April. That was simply too far behind for him to be able to come back from.
Salido needs to be cautious in the first five rounds of the contest by keeping his chin tucked, and not taking too many chances. Martinez will be looking to take advantage of every mistake Salido makes in this fight. Martinez is definitely not unbeatable, as we saw in his losses to Mikey Garcia and Ricky Burns in the past.
Martinez looked very flawed in those fights. He had both of them down early in the fights, but once they got up off the canvas, they were able to dominate the action to get the victories. Salido just needs to make certain that he doesn’t get knocked down in the first six rounds because the last thing he needs to do is give Martinez a big lead the second time around.
“I am very happy we are fighting in a neutral territory for our rematch, not in Puerto Rico again,” Salido said. “I was very prepared for the first fight but the referee wouldn’t let me fight my fight. It seemed the referee was talking to me the whole 12 rounds. I was trying to focus only on my opponent, but I couldn’t.”
A loss here for Salido would be his third defeat in his last six fights, and it would be a sure fire sign that he might need to hang up his gloves. Salido can’t afford another loss at this point.
