WBA/WBO flyweight champion Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada (27-2, 20 KOs) scored an eleventh round TKO over former world champion Giovani “Guerrero Azteca” Segura (32-4-1, 28 KOs) on Saturday night at the Arena Mexico in Mexico City. Estrada’s reach, movement and crisp combinations paid dividends as he largely neutralized Segura’s pressure and dominated the fight. The bout was stopped in round eleven to save Segura from further punishment. Time was 1:33.

“I am glad and happy to fight again in Macao. It’s good for us to promote boxing in Asia and China,” eight division world champion and reigning WBO welterweight champion Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) told Fightnews.com on Wednesday. Pacman is set to take on WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) on November 22 in the Cotai Arena at the Venitian Hotel in Macao, China live on HBO Pay per view.

We caught up with Pacquiao in Los Angeles at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. The international tour started in Macao, then made stops in Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and will wrap today in New York. “The tour has been good. It’s been really fun. After this we’ll start to train,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao will begin his training camp with his longtime trainer Freddie Roach in Pacquiao’s hometown of General Santos City in the Philippines. This will be the second time in three fights that Pacquiao trains in the Philippines. “Training will be for about eight weeks we will know what to work on in preparation for this fight,” Pacquiao said. “It’s the same, it depends where you are fighting. In Macao it’s the same weather and time as the Philippines. If the fight was in the U.S then it’s good to train in LA at the Wild Card.”

In his previous fight, The Pacman avenged his controversial loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. “Before the second fight with Bradley I never thought of it as revenge. I just proved that I won the first fight,” Pacquiao said.

In Algieri’s his previous contest he dethroned Ruslan Provodnikov and win the WBO junior welterweight title. “The fight was very close he won the fight and he deserves it,” Pacquiao commented. “He got knocked down twice and came back. Let’s give him credit.”

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also trains Provodnikov and was in the corner for the Algieri fight. “I think Ruslan did enough to keep the title. It was a close fight. That’s the way things go. It could have gone either way,” Roach told Fightnews.com

The Long Island native stands at 5’10 and uses his height and reach to his advantage. The size difference between him and Pacquiao was obvious. “It’s nothing new for me to fight a taller opponent. I am not alarmed about that,” Pacquiao said.

Roach added “He is left handed and leads with the power hand. He has a good jab. We’ll be prepared to take that jab from him. We will have the right sparring partners, a bunch of tall guys.”

pac-alg-la-presser680

Pacquiao also talked to us about his desire of a rematch and fifth fight with his rival Juan Manuel Marquez. “You know I wanted the Marquez fight and they declined. We then went after the next best opponent,” Pacquiao said.

There have also been reports in recent days of a possible showdown with junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia later down the line. Pacquiao assured that the focus is currently set on Algieri. “Any fighter has a chance to fight with me but right now I have to focus on my upcoming fight with Algieri,” Pacquiao stated.

Pacquiao vs. Algieri will be a scheduled 12 round championship fight for Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title. This will be Pacquiao’s 18th appearance on HBO PPV since bursting on to the scene with a sixth round TKO over Lehlohonolo Ledwaba back in 2001. As he went on to be a superstar scoring big wins over Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, and Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao looks to bring that intensity to the ring that helped him get those notable wins.

“I’m always motivated. I always have the fire in my heart. In my mind I have to continue to be intense,” Pacquiao said. “Expect a lot of action a good fight,” Pacquiao concluded.

Roach said “Don’t be surprised if Algieri runs late in the fight like he did against Ruslan.”

Highly regarded Ukrainian cruiserweight Olexander Usyk (4-0, 4 KOs), a 2011 world amateur champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the heavyweight division, will be supposedly tested for the first time in his short career on October 4 at Arena Lviv in Lviv, Ukraine, where he takes on hard-hitting South African veteran Daniel Bruwer (24-5-1, 21 KOs) in a bid for a vacant WBO I/C 200lb title.

In the main event of the evening, local hero and ex-WBA light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13 KOs) will conduct his farewell fight in front of a roaring partisan crowd. Inter will televise this event.

Peter Quillin

“Kid Chocolate” Peter Quillin vacated his middleweight world title and kissed a career-high $1.4 million purse goodbye on Thursday.

He was faced with a WBO-imposed deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Thursday to sign a contract for his mandatory defense against Matt Korobov. Quillin, who had already been given two extensions to the signing deadline, would have been stripped of his title had he not vacated.

It still comes as a surprise to many that Quillin, whose wife gave birth to their first child, a boy, about a week ago, would turn down a purse that is more than three times his biggest payday and give up his title without having another fight signed.

Peter Quillin
Peter Quillin vacated his middleweight world title on Thursday, and in turn, lost out on a career-high $1.4 million purse.

“I’d like to thank WBO president Paco Valcarcel and his organization for their support throughout the years,” Quillin said in a statement. “Winning the WBO world championship was a highlight in my career and something I’ll never forget. This is a difficult decision, but in order to make the fights the fans and I want against my fellow middleweights at the top of the division, I needed to relinquish the title.

“This is an exciting new chapter in my life, and I’m looking forward to cementing my spot as the best middleweight in the world.”

Quillin’s statement rings a bit hollow because there is no obvious major middleweight fight on the horizon for him.

Fights with champion Miguel Cotto and titlist Gennady Golovkin were not possible. Only a match with fellow New Yorker Daniel Jacobs, who owns a lightly regarded secondary title and, like Quillin, is advised by the powerful Al Haymon, would be close.

About a half hour before the deadline, Arnold Joseph, the attorney for Golden Boy Promotions, Quillin’s promoter, sent a letter to the WBO informing it of the decision.

“Mr. Quillin has reviewed the middleweight landscape and is of the belief that there are other more compelling opponents for him to fight which will afford the boxing fans with excitement and which will afford him and his family more opportunities,” Joseph wrote. “Please be assured that Mr. Quillin is by no means minimizing Mr. Korobov’s talents or accomplishments. Mr. Quillin simply seeks to pursue bigger fights. Let me conclude by expressing Mr. Quillin and Golden Boy’s appreciation for your organization’s patience while Mr. Quillin worked through this decision and we look forward to our continued relationship with the WBO.”

Quillin’s decision means that the first boxing event to be promoted by Roc Nation Sports, the sports agency founded by music mogul Jay Z, will be delayed. Roc Nation Sports announced its intentions to promote boxing two weeks ago and the next day won a purse bid for the right to promote Quillin-Korobov, even though it doesn’t have promotional contracts with either fighter.

It bid $1,904,840, a dramatic overbid that easily beat Golden Boy ($1,207,000) and Korobov promoter Top Rank ($515,000). Quillin would have earned a career-best $1,428,630 to Korobov’s career-best $476,210. Korobov signed almost immediately while Quillin asked for extensions.

Roc Nation Sports planned to put the fight on Nov. 1 at the Barclays Center in Quillin’s hometown of Brooklyn, but had since notified Golden Boy and Top Rank that it would instead have been at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C., because Korobov is not licensed in New York due to a medical issue no other state has a problem with.

Michael Yormark, president and chief of branding and strategy for parent company Roc Nation, was disappointed Quillin turned down the fight.

“I’ve got $1.4 million sitting next to me,” Yormark told ESPN.com. “Do you want it? It’s puzzling that he turned down $1.4 million and gave up his belt. In order to turn down that money and give up his belt he has to be looking at a bigger opportunity. Who turns $1.4 million and gives up his belt for nothing?

“We wish him the best of luck. We like Peter a lot. We hope he’s made the right decision here, but it’s puzzling. I’m sure (Haymon) sat down and discussed this with him in detail. Peter has a team around him he listens to and we can only assume the direction he received was to pass. We wish him the best of luck and we hope he has an incredible payday in front of him because that’s the only justification for turning down $1.4 million and giving up his belt.”

Said Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti, “I’m sorry that Roc Nation Sports had to be put through this process. It’s disappointing for all of us, especially when a new player such as Jay Z wants to get involved in our sport. I hope this has no bearing on their future plans. As far as Top Rank goes, we look forward to working with them in any future endeavors.”

Yormark said Roc Nation Sports’ interest in boxing isn’t going anywhere.

“We will continue to look at all opportunities,” he said. “We continue to march forward. We’re in this for the long term. We’re disappointed but it’s not the end. We’re just getting started.

“This just motivates us even more. We knew we were getting into an industry we’d have to navigate through carefully. We hoped to have this first fight in November and it didn’t happen. But we’ll continue to be aggressive and move forward. We’re not going away.”

Korobov’s side was also disappointed.

“We’re disappointed that Peter Quillin didn’t respect the rules,” Moretti said. “Matt will still get his opportunity to fight for the title thanks to the WBO. We’re just really disappointed in Peter Quillin as a fighter. If he thinks that fighting Danny Jacobs for a secondary title is better than this opportunity than so be it. Why he couldn’t he have done both? If he’s that good he could have fought Matt and then Danny Jacobs. He must not have the confidence in himself, or his team doesn’t have confidence in him, that he would relinquish the title that he worked hard to earn.”

Quillin (31-0, 22 KOs), 31, defended the title three times, most recently by near-shutout decision against Lukas Konecny in Washington, D.C., on April 19.

Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs), a 31-year-old Russian southpaw and a 2008 Olympian, scored a pair of seventh-round knockdowns against Jose Uzcategui en route to a 10-round decision victory in his last fight on June 28 in Omaha, Nebraska in his HBO debut.

Korobov will get a shot at the vacant title next, possibly against Billy Joe Saunders, a 2008 Olympian from England. The 25-year-old Saunders (20-0, 11 KOs) is the WBO’s next ranked contender.

Halle, Germany – In the end, Marco Huck will retain his WBO cruiserweight crown, although there was some controversy as to how his bout against Mirko Larghetti ended.

huck-larghetti (14)

Huck (38-2-1) battered Larghetti with a barrage of punches at the conclusion of the 12th and final round, scoring what appeared to be a brutal knockout. But referee Jack Reiss overruled what appeared initially to be a KO win, stating that Huck’s final knockout punch floored Larghetti before the round was over, but the challenger didn’t hit the canvas until after the bell sounded to end the fight.

huck-larghetti (1)

As a result of Reiss’ ruling, the decision was placed in the hands of the judges, who ruled unanimously in Huck’s favor: 116-112, 116-112, 118-110.

Larghetti (21-1) suffered his first-ever defeat to the man who successfully defended the cruiserweight crown for the 13th time, tying Englishman Johnny Nelson’s record.

The weights are in for Saturday’s fight between WBO Cruiserweight World Champion Marco Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs) and challenger Mirko Larghetti (21-0, 13 KOs) at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle/Westphalia, Germany. Larghetti came in at 88.6 [195.3-pounds], while Huck was 90.7 [199.9-pounds].

huck-larghetti (1)

Kalle Sauerland: The GERRY WEBER Stadium is most famous for its tennis tournament. But on August 30 there will no game, set and match but fistic fireworks instead. Marco gets the chance to write history with his 13th title defense. However, we plan bigger and better things for him – either unification or a step-up to heavyweight – on US soil.

huck-larghetti (3)

Salvatore Cherchi: Every reign has come to an end. Marco Huck had a lot of success in the past but come Saturday a new era is about to start and that will be Mirko Larghetti’s!

huck-larghetti (5)

Marco Huck: I am not tired to repeat myself – I will make spaghetti out of Larghetti! Listen good to me Salvatore, I will break your fighter to pieces. Mirko Larghetti is still unbeaten and therefore he has a certain kind of self-confidence. But come August 30 it will be gone as he is about to witness that I am in a complete different class. Regarding all my future plans I can just say that I am currently focused on the fight this Saturday and you may well ask me on Sunday about them.

Mirko Larghetti: The better man is going to win. I am well prepared and thankful for this chance. On Saturday, I will make my dream come true and become the WBO Cruiserweight World Champion.

By: John J. Raspanti –

WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck doesn’t fear unlucky numbers.

This Saturday night at the Gerry Stadium in Halle/Westphalia, Germany, Huck will attempt to defend his title for the 13th time when he faces undefeated Italian challenger Mirko Larghetti.

A victory by Huck will equal the number of defenses set by Johnny Nelson.

The bout was originally scheduled forlast March until Huck (37-2-1, 26 KOs), broke his thumb in training.

Larghetti (21-0, 13 KOs) was not pleased with the delay.

“I was ready back then and I’m even more ready now,” said the unheralded challenger in July when the new date was announced.

The bigger question is whether Larghetti is aware of what lies ahead.

Huck, 29, who was born in Serbia, but lives in Germany, captured the cruiserweight crown in 2009. He was last seen in the ring last January, dispatching tough Firat Arslan in six brutal rounds.

The victory was one of the most impressive of Huck’s career—since Arslan gave him all he could handle the year before.

Arslan entered the rematch extremely confident, until Huck flattened him with a combination.

Huck hasn’t lost a fight since being edged by then-WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin in 2012.

Larghetti, 31, will be fighting for the first time outside of his home country of Italy. His resume is spotty. A few months ago he knocked out one Attila Palko in two rounds.

Palko entered the bout with a record of 17 wins and 12 losses. Larghetti won the European Union cruiserweight belt in 2013 with a decision over Vincenzo Rossitto.

Despite his inferior competition, Larghetti’s trainer, Salvatore Cherchi, thinks his man can pull off the upset victory on Saturday.

“Every reign has to come to an end,” Cherchi said during a recent news conference.

“Marco Huck has had a lot of success in the past, but come Saturday, a new era is about to start, and that will be Mirko Larghetti’s.”

Huck scoffed at Cherchi’s prediction.

“I am not too tired to repeat myself,” said Huck. “I will make spaghetti out of Larghetti. Listen good to me, Salvatore, I will break your fighter to pieces.”

The fact that Larghetti is something of an unknown quantity could help the challenger in the early rounds. Huck could be a little over-confident and thinking about his next fight.

Though farfetched, anything is possible.

Huck has struggled with what many perceived as inferior competition in the past. He has a tendency to let some former combatants take the lead in fights, forcing him to rally.

Larghetti is an aggressive fighter with pretty good power. His punches can be wide, which could leave him open to counters from the defending champion.

Huck won’t shy away from standing in the pocket and rumbling. He’s strong, determined, and extremely durable. He can move when needed, has a sound defense, and packs a powerful right hand.

Larghetti will need to prove he can handle the aggression of Huck.

He’ll try, but eventually the more skilled Huck will break him down and win the fight by stoppage before round 10.

valcarcel

By David Finger –

For over 18 years, WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel took a very different approach to boxing than many other people in the sport of boxing. He was very much a “fly under the radar” sort of executive and through his management the WBO seemed keen on avoiding the controversy and the scandals that at times plagued the sport, with the WBO even sporting an undefeated record in litigation over the course of over 25 years. The WBO President didn’t seem like the type to relish the spotlight or to point fingers, which makes this year so…interesting.

It may not capture the same amount of attention as Floyd Mayweather’s very public feud with rapper 50 Cent, but a recent war of words has emerged between the WBO and the other sanctioning organizations (in particular the WBC) that has many boxing insiders wondering if the status quo has just been shot out of the water. Valcarcel is no longer content to sit back and take the quiet approach: he is making it abundantly clear what he thinks about the proliferation of champions and championship belts in the WBA and WBC and he is taking to social media to make his case.

It all started in June, when the WBC hosted a Boxing Summit in Cancun, a rare opportunity for the presidents of all of the sanctioning organizations to come together to discuss several proposed changes in the sport, including things like PED testing and the standardization of division names. Notably absent was Valcarcel, who then went on social media to vent his frustration over something that wasn’t up for discussion: the proliferation of lesser belts like the WBC Silver Championship belt.

“I find it odd that my friends at the summit did not discuss the elimination of aluminum, copper, silver, interim, recess & emeritus titles,” Valcarcel tweeted that month, a clear jab at the WBC and its Silver Championship.

The jab prompted a sharp rebuke from WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, who was quoted by ESPN Deportes as saying that Valcarcel’s attitude was “very low” before adding “I thought he was a person of greater class.”

Rather than shy away, Valcarcel expanded his hit list to include the WBA, chiding them just last week on Facebook for their excessive number of world champions.

“Our friends at the World Boxing Association / Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (WBA) have 38 champions in 17 weight divisions,” Valcarcel wrote on the WBO’s Facebook page on August 15th, “the World Boxing Organization only recognizes the highest one for unification purposes. In the case of the middleweight division we recognize Gennady Golovkin.”

Valcarcel however is finding support from a fair number of boxing fans who have long clamored for the very same thing: less champions and more unification fight. It has been a cause that seemed to fall on deaf ears for decades, but right now it seems that the pro-unification camp now has a very influential spokesperson in Valcarcel. Who knows, maybe this is the day that the winds of change blow across the sport of boxing and we finally see an era where unification fights are the norm and not the exception. Valcarcel took some time to talk with Fightnews about the WBO Kid’s Drug Free program, the upcoming WBO Convention in Las Vegas, and the war of words between the WBO and the other sanctioning organizations in recent months.

Fightnews: Mr. President, thank you for taking time to speak with us today. What are some of the things the WBO will be discussing during the upcoming 27th Annual Convention in Las Vegas?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: We are going to talk about the ABC seminars for judges and referees. And also we have seminars planned for supervisors. That’s the main concern of the WBO in the convention. They will need top certification (from the ABC). Also, we are going to have a discussion about weigh-in procedures. We may be discussing possible changes in those procedures. Also, during the convention we will talk about (implementing) replay in boxing for different circumstances. We want to make boxing, and the decisions, more accurate. Also we plan to work with commission in the USA in relation to the sanctioning organizations compliance according to the (local) laws. We are going to have ratings and sanctioning committee together and discuss title bouts; for male and female champions. And at the end we are going to recognize our champions and we will commemorate Oscar De La Hoya and Joe Calzaghe, two Hall of Famers. Also we will deal with the different countries in which we are working with the kids, to help the kids in their teens and to keep them in school. We are in 25 countries around the world.

Fightnews: That is a good segue into my next question. What are the developments in regards to the WBO Kid’s Drug Free Program?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: We are working different teams and different associations to work with the kids. We plan ways to help the kids directly. Sometimes they need equipment to practice in the gym. Sometimes they need school supplies like books, notebooks, pencils. Sometimes they need help. Now we donate about $60 per kid to help kids obtain school items here in Puerto Rico. Our goal is to keep all the kids we bring to the gym in school and to make sure they stay motivated. To make sure they recognize that they need to stay in school and can stay in the gym at the same time. Discipline and education. Also we work with different associations with the handicap, to motivate them and give them a role model. We want to keep the kids motivated. We want to bring our champions to the convention, so that they know that when they become champions they have a responsibility to the kids as well. Most of the champions came from poor neighborhoods. They had to fight against drugs…against poverty. They didn’t have the support. They only had a mom, who had to be a father and mother. We want those champions to work with the kids all around the world.

Fightnews: What are some of the more exciting developments this year with the WBO?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: If you talk about boxing, we have champions who are making real money and exiting fans. But if you are talking about the whole purpose of WBO, it is that we are improving and we have more participants with the WBO Kids Drug Free Program. We are giving more money to the program all over the world and we made a difference. You can check with others, when you see WBO every week we are working with kids all over the world. Check our webpage and you can see how we are working with kids all over the world. If you check the others, they have boxing. But I can say WBO is more than just boxing. We have a commitment with kids all around the world.

Fightnews: This is another good segue into my next question. You mentioned “the others” here, which we can assume is in reference to the other sanctioning organizations. To many boxing insiders, it appears that in the last year something of a rivalry emerged between the WBO and the other sanctioning organizations. The WBO was notably absent from a recent boxing summit hosted in Cancun back in June, in which the Presidents of the WBA, WBC, and IBF met to discuss some changes and uniformed policies regarding the sport. You raised some eyebrows afterwards when you criticized the proliferation of belts in the other organizations. Just last week on Facebook you took a jab at the WBA, criticizing the fact that they have 38 champions in 17 weight classes. Would you care to comment on this growing war of words between the WBO and the other sanctioning organizations?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: We are against interim championships. We are against three champions in one division. We are against having super champions and regular champions. Now we do have a few “super champions” but this is to (allow them to) work with TV. Klitschko is a super champion. That is the way he can fight with the right opponent that people will enjoy. We also have Manny Pacquiao. All the fans know Manny all over the world. This (super championship) only gives them more time to work with their mandatory. They fight the right guy and the right guy for TV, and the guy people want to see on TV. For that point of view with have the super champion, but we don’t have another champion and a super champion! We are also against copper, aluminum, silver championships and all those types of belts. Now we have international champions since sometimes you have a good fighter from one continent, so this is an intercontinental type of belt.

But the reason we didn’t show in Mexico is that it was inconsequential. You go, the media is there, but then nothing happens. Because you still have three champions and a bunch of aluminum and copper champions. Regardless of my relationship, we are talking about different concepts. We are against that concept and they promote the concept of three champions in one division and the proliferation of titles in the sport.

Fightnews: So can we confirm that the WBO is in favor of unification fights between the sanctioning organizations?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: Yes. When a champion wants to unify a title that is fine, and that is also good for boxing when we have unified champions. We have different champions who unified as well, we have three or four unified champions. We also have female champions who unified. It is good for boxing and it is something fans want to see. But because we are different sanctioning organization we end up with more champions. But I don’t have to go to Mexico to say that in public. For all these years I have been president of the WBO that has been my position.

Fightnews: So do you feel the other organizations discourage unification fights?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: They didn’t want their champions to unify. You remember what they (the WBC) said to Canello Alvarez when he became the WBA champion? (Author’s Note: Prior to the Saul Alvarez-Austin Trout light middleweight unification fight the WBC announced that the winner would have to choose one title or the other and would not recognize a unified champion).

Fightnews: The WBO is making major inroads in Africa and in particular Asia. What do you attribute that expansion to and what are the WBOs long term plans regarding Asia and Africa?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: Because we start working with different fighters regardless of whom the promoter was. We have the right people to work in that country. In Asia we have Leon Panoncello working with the organization, to work with boxing and also the different kids. We use the WBO Kids Drug Free program to keep those people in the gym and then later they become fighters and they have the opportunity to be regular champions. We have the right people in Asia and Africa. We try to influence different commissions as well, not just with boxing but with WBO Kids as well.

Fightnews: Any final words Mr. President?

Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel: We will invite anyone who wants to show up at the convention as we discuss all the issues in front of the press and the public. We don’t do anything behind closed doors.

A phone call from representatives handling the career of two-time Olympic Gold medalist Zou Shiming to the Top Rank office led to what has become an ongoing tradition of promoting major fight cards in Macau. That marriage – not even yet two years old – is already on the verge of reaping major benefits.

Shiming has spent his entire young pro career fighting at The Venetian Macao, beginning with his pro debut last April.

“None of this would have been possible if we weren’t contacted by the people who represent Zou Shiming,” Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum pointed out of the ongoing relationship between Top Rank and the casino resort often referred to as ‘Las Vegas on steroids.’

In that debut show, Shiming won a four-round decision over Eleazer Valenuela. The bout was billed as the headlining act given the soaring popularity of the most successful boxer in the history of China’s amateur boxing program, including Olympic Gold medals won in 2008 at home in Beijing and 2012 in London. The highlight of that show, however, was Juan Francisco Estrada scoring what at the time was a major upset over Brian Viloria to become a two-belt flyweight titlist.

If all goes well in their next bouts, their paths could cross in the ring.

Top Rank and Shiming return to the Venetian Macao on November 23 (November 22 in the United States), with a show headlined by a welterweight title fight between legendary Manny Pacquiao and unbeaten Chris Algieri. On the undercard, Shiming (5-0, 1KO) appears in his first scheduled 12-round bout as he faces unbeaten Thai boxer Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym (27-0-2, 12KOs). Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum confirmed during Monday’s press conference in Macau that the bout will serve as an official title eliminator.

The winner will go on to face the last man standing in the September 6 mouthwatering clash between Estrada and former lineal 108 lb. king Giovani Segura.

From a promotional standpoint, Arum is naturally rooting for his guy to win. Also, so that he no longer has to butcher then name of the unbeaten opponent who will stand across the ring from Shiming.

“Zou Shiming won three medals in three (Olympic) competitions, the second and third being Gold medals,” Arum reminded the assembled media during Monday’s press conference in Macau, the first stop of a 27,000-mile press tour that concludes September 4th in New York. “China had never been a hotbed for boxing, so the past few years have been an education. The past few years have been educational.

“A lot of that is attributable to following Zou Shiming and his winning Olympic medals. He will go into the ring on November 23, in a WBO title eliminator versus the Thai fighter (Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym). Thank God he changed his name, he now goes by 13-Rien Express. The title eliminator will be fought over 12 rounds.”

Shiming has quickly advanced up the scale since his pro debut. His two ring appearances in 2014 came in fights scheduled for eight and ten rounds, respectively. Shiming only enjoyed one early night, though not by much as he stopped Yokthong KKP in the 7th round of their February flyweight bout.

His most recent ring appearance was his deepest to date, a 12-round decision over Luis de la Rosa this past July. It was the first time in Shiming’s career that Arum was unable to sit ringside, as the promoter was still recovering from knee surgery. The 33-year old flyweight hopes it’s the only time the two are separated, especially as he already begins to hit the prime years of his rapidly escalated career.

“Bob missed my last fight, so I hope all of my fights in the future are in the company of Bob Arum,” Shiming noted. “I’m grateful for all that Bob has done for me so that we can progress with each fight.”

Following the completion of the press tour, Shiming will travel to the Philippines, joining his head trainer Freddie Roach and Pacquiao in training camp. The preparation is truly a team effort, one that even has the Filipino legend rooting for his stable mate to the world title stage despite his own difficult assignment lying ahead.

“Zou Shiming is going to train with me in the Philippines,” Pacquaio confirmed to the media during Monday’s presser. The comment was accompanied by a big grin, as Pacquiao turned to Shiming while holding two fingers in the air. “Two more fights to become a world champion.”

A light heavyweight title clash between IBF and WBA beltholder Bernard Hopkins and WBO counterpart Sergey Kovalev is set for Nov. 8 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City to be televised on HBO.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya informed RingTV.com of the news on Friday.

“The fight’s happening on Nov. 8 in Atlantic City,” said De La Hoya. “Nov. 8 is the date that Bernard Hopkins wanted and that’s what we’ve got.”

The IBF has received signed contracts and a request from Golden Boy for the bout, according to IBF president Daryl Peoples, who said Championships Chairman Lindsey Tucker has the contracts. Kovalev is promoted by Main Events.

“We got an email from [Vice President and matchmaker] Eric Gomez from Golden Boy saying that its on Nov. 8 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City,” said Peoples.

In his last fight in April, Hopkins (55-6-2, 32 knockouts) scored a unanimous decision that dethroned Beibut Shumenov for the WBA belt. Kovalev (25-0-1, 23 KOs) was last in action for a second round stoppage of Blake Caparello on August 2.

Originally from Chelyabinsk, Russia, Kovalev, 31, is 13-0-1 with 13 knockouts in his past 14 fights, including a fourth round stoppage that dethroned previously unbeaten WBO beltholder Nathan Cleverly in August 2013.

Before facing Caparello, Kovalev dropped previously undefeated southpaw Cedric Agnew once each in the second and sixth rounds of a seventh round knockout in March.

A future Hall-of-Famer, Hopkins, 49, won a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Tavoris Cloud in March 2013 to extend his own record as the oldest man to win a significant crown.

Hopkins first set the record at the age of 46 by outpointing Jean Pascal for the WBC’s title in May 2011 before being dethroned following a majority decision loss to Chad Dawson in May of 2012.

After winning the IBF middleweight title from Segundo Mercado on April 29, 1995, Hopkins went on to defend it a record 20 times before losing to Jermain Taylor by a split decision on July 16, 2005.

After he lost to Taylor and then endured an immediate rematch loss, Hopkins rose into the light heavyweight division for triumphs over Antonio Tarver, Winky Wright, Kelly Pavlik, Enrique Ornelas and Roy Jones, his lone defeat in the division prior to Dawson coming by way of split decision against Joe Calzaghe.

Two of Hopkins’ biggest wins were over Tarver and Pavlik in June 2006 and October 2008, respectively, with both fights taking place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

“One fight that comes to mind for everyone was Tarver-Hopkins, during which Hopkins demonstrated his amazing boxing ability. Another one is Kelly Pavlik, so Hopkins has some great history with Atlantic City,” said De La Hoya.

“So Atlantic City is a great venue for Bernard Hopkins and we want to show the world what Atlantic City is all about, bringing the big events to Atlantic City we hope will inject some positive energy. I have no doubt in my mind that it will be a sellout with Bernard Hopkins and Sergey Kovalev.”

The kickoff press conference for the November 22 clash of champions between WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO jr welterweight champion Chris Algieri took place Monday at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China.

“This fight is going to be a good fight,” promised Pacquiao. “Algieri is undefeated, he’s a good boxer, I saw his last fight with Ruslan. He took a lot of punches but he’s a very tough boxer and fought back…my opponent is tough and I like that. The last fight that we had here with Brandon Rios we did a good job, but Algieri’s different than Rios. He’s faster than Rios, he’s taller than Rios, so it will give me a hard time.

“It’s been a long time that the fans of Manny Pacquiao have been expecting a knockout. This fight I’m going to try to do my best to make the fans happy and if the knockout comes it’ll come, but what I’m trying to do is focus and win the fight.”

Algieri was very gracious toward the Pacquiao Team for accepting the fight and stated he deserved this chance. “I earned the right to be here,” said Algieri, who is significantly taller than Pacman. “I bled for this. I trained for this my whole life. This opportunity means the world to me. I’m going to prepare myself the best I possibly can…I will give it my absolute all, just like I showed in my last fight and every fight before that.”

Pacquaio’s trainer Freddie Roach said Manny’s training camp will be held in General Santos City, Philippines. “I know Chris has a master’s degree,” commented Roach. “But Manny has a Ph.D in boxing.”

More Pacquiao-Algieri Quotes

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO jr welterweight champion Algieri will announce their November 22 world championship fight during a two-week 27,273-mile international media tour, which kicked off Monday with a press conference at the fight location, The Venetian Macao. The tour will include stops in Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT. If you plan on attending live, tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. August 29 (details later in this report).

Manny Pacquiao: “Chris Algieri fought an exceptional fight in June to win the world title from Ruslan Provodnikov. I am impressed and intrigued by his scientific approach to training and boxing. He may be the smartest and the fittest athlete I have ever faced and that makes him the most dangerous. I worked hard to reclaim my welterweight title and I will work harder to make sure I keep it on November 22. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bring glory to the Philippines. ”

Chris Algieri: “It is a real honor to fight a future Hall of Famer like Manny Pacquiao and I am looking forward to being introduced to a whole new market and fan base in the Far East. My last fight against Ruslan Provodnikov got the world’s attention, now I am going to show what I can really do. I have the utmost respect for Manny and his great team, but make no mistake — I am here to win and I have nothing on my mind but beating a legend.”

Pacquiao Trainer Freddie Roach: “I underestimated Algieri when he faced Ruslan Provodnikov in June but I won’t make that mistake again. I hope he understands that this is a fight and not a marathon. Algieri is going to face the best of Manny Pacquiao because Manny is going to have his toughest training camp ever. I am looking forward to a great fight and Manny’s finest hour on November 22.”

Algieri Trainer Tim Lane: “Over the past 14 years I have trained and watched Chris become a Master of the Art of Boxing. His hard work ethic, discipline and dedication are second to none. Chris has been in the gym after only one week off from his last bout with New York trainers Keith Trimble, Dr. Mike Camp and Tony Ricci who have kept him in great shape through the years and continue to help him get stronger and faster between and during all camps. Training camp will officially start in late September in New York and finish in Las Vegas before leaving for China. Let it be known, there is a New ERA in the world of boxing and on November 22. Chris Algieri will once again Shock the World and become the New WBO Welterweight Champion!”

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum: “The battle between the two world champions will be a fantastic fight. Manny’s non-stop attack style will be challenged by Algieri’s laser-like punching.”

Algieri’s promoter Joe DeGuardia: “It has been a great year. In February we had Chris at The Paramount on ESPN, in June on HBO winning the World Championship at Barclays Center in dramatic fashion against the feared Ruslan Prodvodnikov. Now we are excited to announce that he will be at The Venetian Macao against legendary Manny Pacquiao on HBO Pay-Per-View. It has been an unprecedented meteoric rise that will continue on November 22. I look forward to this intriguing and ‘landscape-changing’ fight.”

Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sands China Ltd: “Sands China is thrilled to be bringing Manny back to Macao again to fight at the Cotai Arena this November. Since Manny’s sold-out Venetian Macao debut in November 2013, we’ve worked continuously with Bob Arum and Top Rank to host three more successful boxing cards at the Cotai Arena and two live screening events of US cards; and further, announced our partnership on the mainland China television program ‘Fist Power – Fight to Win.’ We’re happy to see these events helping promote the growth of boxing in the region while raising the profile of Macao as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

Mark Taffet/HBO Pay-Per-View: “Against all odds, Manny Pacquiao has produced a brilliant, Hall of Fame career. He’s accepted challenges around the globe and established new frontiers, including fighting on pay-per-view from Macao. Now another young, talented and unassuming prizefighter named Chris Algieri will try to defy the odds and fulfill his dreams by challenging Pacquiao for his welterweight crown. In Chris Algieri, fight fans see a great American story with added intrigue based on the heart and courage he displayed in his recent victory over Ruslan Provodnikov.”

WBO middleweight titleholder Peter Quillin may have landed his biggest pay day and a fight before fans familiar to him against Matt Korobov on Nov. 8 either in Washington, D.C., or New York City, thanks to a purse bid won by Roc Nation Sports on Monday.

The winning bid for Roc Nation Sports, the company founded by rapper Jay-Z, was made by newly-hired former Golden Boy Promotions COO David Itskowitch.

Itskowitch bid $1,904,840 compared to $1,207,000 by Golden Boy Promotions representative Ramiro Gonzalez and $515,000 by Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti, according to Jose Izquierdo, general secretary of the WBO.

Izquierdo and WBO President Paco Valcarcel said that Quillin (31-0, 22 knockouts) is entitled to 75 percent ($1,428, 630) of the bid to 25 percent ( $476,210) for Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs).

“I’m already making enough money where I’m able to take care of my family and to own a couple of things and to live a good life, but that’s damn near $2 million on the table that they’ve bid on this fight,” said Quillin, who is promoted by Golden Boy and advised by Al Haymon.

“I don’t think or believe that [WBA 160-pound titleholder] Gennady Golovkin has come close to being offered nothing like that. Of course, my other pay days are very good pay days, and I’m looking to put away as much as I can for life after boxing. Some of these other guys around me may be making more money, but I just hope they’re making the right decisions with their money.”

Izquierdo said Itskowitch proposed the date of Nov. 8 either in Washington, D.C. or New York City, where Roc Nation has been licensed.

Michael Yorkmark, president and chief of branding and strategy for Roc Nation, is the twin brother of Brett Yormark, the CEO of Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., where Quillin has competed in two of his past four fights contested under the banner of Golden Boy.

Quillin debuted at Barclays Center in October 2012 when he scored a unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Hassan N’Dam, whom he dropped six times to earn the WBO’s vacant belt.

In Quillin’s next fight in April 2013 at Barclays Center, he scored two second-round knockdowns 30 seconds apart and dropped his man twice more in the seventh and final round of a technical knockout victory over Fernando Guerrero.

In his last fight in April at The D.C. Armory in Washington, D.C., Quillin dominated Lukas Konecny, winning a unanimous decision by the scores of 119-109, 119-109 and 120-108.

“Both of those areas are places that have the demographics where I have been able to relate to people and to get my story out there. I feel as though I have a big following in Brooklyn, as well as in D.C.,” said Quillin.

“I just want to be able to deliver my story in a positive way to people, regardless of whether it’s in Brooklyn or in D.C. or against Korobov or any of those other guys.”

World Boxing Organization (WBO) President, Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel welcomed Roc Nation Sports, company that won today’s WBO purse bid for the fight between the middleweight champion Peter Quillin and the #1 ranked Matt Korobov.

“I’m definitely surprised by their participation,” said WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel of Roc Nation’s first foray into the world of boxing. “On behalf of the WBO I welcome Jay Z and his company Roc Nation and wish them nothing but success in their quest to put on quality boxing events and represent well the fighters they eventually sign.”

“We are honored that they (Roc Nation Sports) have chosen a WBO World Championship contest to mark their entrance to the sport as boxing promoter and look forward to working with them,” said Valcarcel of the fight proposed for November 8, 2014 at an undetermined venue in either Washington, DC or New York City.

With a bid of $1,904,840 Roc Nation Sports, the company founded by rapper and music superstar Jay Z, won Monday’s purse bid at the WBO Headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to promote Quillin’s (31-0, 22 KOs) mandatory WBO Middleweight title defense against Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs).

Roc Nation Sports, represented by David Itskowitch, outbid both Quillin’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions ($1,207,000) and Korobov’s promotor Top Rank ($515,000).

Former featherweight world titleholder Orlando Salido and former title challenger Terdsak Kokietgym will square off for a vacant interim junior lightweight title on Sept. 20 in Salido’s hometown of Ciudad Obregon, Mexico.

The WBO, which is sanctioning the title involved in the bout, normally does not give out interim belts the way other organizations do, but it made an exception in this case because Mikey Garcia, its 130-pound titleholder, is inactive and embroiled in a lawsuit with Top Rank, his promoter, and it looks like he will be idle for an extended period.

“The approval of interim championship bouts is an exception, not the norm,” WBO attorney Luis Batista-Salas wrote in the organization’s letter granting the sanction this week. “In this case we are ordering this fight due to the fact that current WBO junior lightweight titleholder Miguel Angel ‘Mikey’ Garcia is in an anticipated protracted legal battle with his promoter, seeking a declaration from the California State Court that he has no further obligation under the promotional rights agreement.

“Besides the contractual dispute, the champion has furthermore declared his intent to move up in weight. Thus, and in order to keep the junior lightweight division active, we approve the fight between Salido and Kokietgym, the two best available contenders.”

Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs), a two-division titleholder, has not fought since a lopsided unanimous decision win against Juan Carlos Burgos in a Jan. 25 title defense in New York, and it appears unlikely that he will fight again this year.

Salido lost his featherweight world title to Garcia by eighth-round technical decision in January 2013, also in New York, when an accidental head-butt broke Garcia’s nose and the fight was called off because Garcia, who had knocked Salido down four times, was deemed unable to continue.

After Garcia failed to make weight for his first defense against Juan Manuel Lopez, he was stripped of the belt. Salido then won the vacant title by knocking out Orlando Cruz in the seventh round in October.

Salido (41-12-2, 28 KOs), 33, was stripped of the title for failing to make weight for a March 1 defense against Vasyl Lomachenko. Salido won a decision, but the title remained vacant and he announced he would move up to junior lightweight, where he is again following behind Garcia.

salido.media.day.140226.01.330w

“Mikey gave us the opportunity to fight for the featherweight title again by not making weight and now he is giving us the opportunity to fight for the (interim) junior lightweight title,” Sean Gibbons, Salido’s manager, told ESPN.com on Friday. “We’re happy to fight for this title against the top-rated (WBO) contender.

“If we win, we’ll send Mikey a nice Christmas ham even though Salido is still upset that he quit on us in ninth round with a suspect broken nose when Salido was coming on like Grant in Richmond. We know this is a big opportunity, especially because he gets to fight at home.”

Kokietgym (53-4-1, 33 KOs), 33, of Thailand, is riding a seven-fight winning streak since suffering a unanimous decision loss to Japan’s Takahiro Ao in a junior lightweight title challenge in April 2012.

news_IMG_0206

Kokietgym’s four losses have all come when he has faced a top-level opponent. Besides the loss to Ao, he dropped a decision challenging Steven Luevano for a featherweight title in 2008, was knocked out in the seventh round by Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez in a 2006 interim featherweight title bout and lost by unanimous decision to Joan Guzman in a featherweight title eliminator in 2005.

Manny-Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight is considered as a “life-long dream” for opponent Chris Algieri as the WBO light welterweight champion opts to rely on his conditioning as he faces the eight-division world champion.

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight is scheduled for November 22, in what is considered to be Asia’s boxing Mecca, the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. While “Pacman” is coming off a definitive victory against Tim Bradley in April to recapture the WBO welterweight title, Chris Algieri is also fresh off a victory against hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov.

In an interview with HBO Boxing’s Jim Lampley, the undefeated New York boxer is still in awe that he is able to fulfill his life-long dream of facing a fighter like Manny Pacquiao.

“This is probably the millionth and one time, and now we’re here,” said Algieri, when asked about how many times he has entertained the thought of being in a pay-per-view main event.

Chris Algieri is a 14-1 underdog for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight, despite his undefeated slate. Many fans and media members alike have already predicted a Pacquiao victory, inclduing former rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

“He barely has a chance to win,” Marquez said in an interview with Boxingscene. “Algieri is strong and he’s durable. He also has boxing ability as shown against Ruslan Provodnikov but he doesn’t have the style to beat Pacquiao- who has great speed and power.”

“I believe that (Pacquiao) can win by knockout,” he added.

But Chris Algieri believes that it will not be as easy as how most people think it would be, as he promises to be the best fighter that he can be come fight night.

“I’m going to be an entirely different fighter when I fight Manny Pacquiao,” Algieri declared. “I’m different every time I fight, and I train specifically for my opponents, so we’re going to have a perfect game plan for Manny.”

Chris Algieri also revealed that he would be relying on his conditioning to hopefully get an edge against the eight-division world champion.

“I’m gonna use my conditioning to push the pace and set a pace that he is not used to at this point of his career and look to dominate down the stretch,” Algieri said.
