WBC, WBA & WBO female world welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus (25-0, 7 KOs) will attempt to make history on September 13 by becoming the first female boxer in any weight category to unify a division by holding all four major titles when she takes on IBF champion Ivana Habazin (13-1, 5 KOs) at TAP1 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Victory in Copenhagen would not only make Brækhus the first female boxer to hold all four titles simultaneously but also just the third boxer in history to have achieved this feat following Bernard Hopkins’ and Jermain Taylor’s middleweight reigns.

Cecilia Brækhus: This is a massive opportunity for me to cement my legacy as the best female boxer of all time.

Ivana Habazin: Cecilia is possibly the greatest female boxer of all time but it is time for her to experience what it feels like to lose.

Saturday night, boxing’s smallest carried the entire sport.

Fight fans tuning into the Danny Garcia-headlined event on Showtime were left wanting. As Boxing.com editor-in-chief Robert Ecksel put it: “Golden Boy Promotions, and Al Haymon presented a trio of mismatches that were as painful to watch as they are to write about.”

But 2,000 miles south at Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon in Mexico, the best fight of 2014 took place.

In the Fight of the Year, 21-year-old Francisco Rodriguez Jr. (15-2, 10 KOs) unified the WBO and IBF minimumweight world titles with a unanimous-decision victory over Katsunari Takayama (27-7, 10 KOs) to become the No. 1 strawweight in the world.

Anyone familiar with these two knew there would be excitement. But no one saw this coming.

The bout opened, both fighters were wound up and let loose. They clashed in the center of the ring, and punches bounced off the faces of both men.

Takayama, nicknamed “Lightning,” bounced on his toes. He moved his feet, the most active in the sport, hastily. He advanced in, left his mark and then relocated back out of reach without notice.

“El Chihuas” was ready for this. Takayama’s punches were nothing he couldn’t handle. He’s taken worse, courtesy of Roman “El Chocolatito” Gonzalez, the best combination puncher in the sport. But this isn’t the same wild, two-fisted berserker who was picked apart by Gonzalez 11 months ago. This was a world-class operator, cut with a penchant for violence.

He targeted the body often. Most from Mexico do. But his lead left was something divine this night, especially in the first three rounds where he countered Takayama across the face repeatedly with a splendid left hook.

Rounds 1 and 2 could be argued either way. Takayama’s high output was frantic. His feet were even faster. But Rodriguez’s pace wasn’t too far behind. And his punches were doing more damage.

In the first minute of the third stanza, Rodriguez uncorked a left uppercut that sent Takayama to the mat. The Japanese champion quickly rose, but Chihuas earned a 10-8 score.

Takayama, 31, has been fighting the very best the 105-pound weight class has to offer for nearly a decade now, dating back to 2005 when he beat Isaac Bustos. When Rodriguez slowed down to start Round 4, Lightning struck.

Most of the middle rounds saw Takayama suffocate his young foe with fists, drilling punches into him from every conceivable angle. Action was still high from both sides, but the Japanese veteran got the edge in Rounds 4 through 7, even bullying Chihuas into the ropes.

The fight was beginning to slip away from the hometown Rodriguez. Just 21, he could’ve retired on the stool and still been applauded for his effort at such a high level of the sport. But the roar of 9,000 Mexican fans surely fueled an appetite for glory. He wouldn’t let them down.

hi-res-1fbaf9863ff3729e80ce89e9c8bf80b6_crop_exact

Rodriguez strutted to the center of the ring to begin Round 8. He extended his right fist to his opponent for a customary slap of gloves. Takayama, ever the savvy veteran, accepted his opponent’s gesture while simultaneously cocking back a right hand that crashed into the back of the Mexican’s ear, forcing Rodriguez to give ground.

Cheap-shotted, Chihuas’ punches suddenly looked crisper than ever. He felt disrespected, and violence was on deck.

In the eighth round, this fight went from great to legendary. The final minute in particular is when the ring was engulfed in flames. The exchange of punches by these two men is unparalleled in ferocity and quantity so far this year.

The final four rounds were no different. Forehead to forehead and not a clinch to be had. The fighters traded the center of the ring almost as often as punches thrown. Slinging demonic left hands Takayama’s way, Rodriguez’s punchers were heavier.

To begin Round 12, referee Samuel Viruet brought the two combatants together to touch gloves. This is usually the part where both men, exhausted, coast to the final bell.

But not these two.

Of all the action and terrible warfare through the first incredible 11 rounds, the 12th was unbelievably the best of them all.

Both men planted their feet and lost themselves in a punch-drunk daze like the boxing gods button-mashing their wireless controllers from above. The perfect conclusion to an epic test of will and courage.

The scorecards were read and Rodriguez Jr. was announced the winner by a tally of 115-112, 116-111 and an awry 119-108.

A celebratory corner for Rodriguez lifted their champion above their shoulders and above the entire division. Chihuas has won nine of his past 10 fights, highlighted by a trouncing of the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board’s No. 10 rated Merlito Sabillo and a scintillating victory over No. 2 Takayama. The young Mexican’s resume now includes two wins of more relevance and higher quality than any other active strawweight in the world, including Hekkie Budler (whose best win is over a declining Nkosinathi Joyi).

But Takayama is no loser. Losers don’t fight like he just did. His time at 105 pounds seems over. But for one night and 12 glorious rounds, he paired up with Rodriguez Jr. to lift an entire sport and punch their tickets into boxing lore.

The sport needed a savior Saturday night.

It got two of them.

Though 2014 has proven to be a steady year in boxing, a solid frontrunner for Fight of the Year had yet to emerge. Until Saturday night, that is.

While American fans had to settle for the unpopular mismatches that were Danny Garcia-Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson-Edgar Santana, a battle for supremacy at 105 pounds was taking place south of the border.

In the end, Francisco Rodriguez Jr. (15-2, 10 knockouts) had done enough to unify his WBO strawweight title with Katsunari Takayama’s IBF belt with a unanimous decision at the Arena Monterey in Monterey, Mexico. The scores didn’t tell the story of how close the action was, as Rodriguez won by the tallies of 115-112, 116-111 and 119-108.

The 21-year-old Rodriguez, who had won the title with a one-sided pounding of Merlito Sabillo in March, came out aggressively – as is his trademark – while Takayama, 31, was looking to box and counter.

The inventive angles of Rodriguez’s attack finally paid dividends in the third stanza with a left hook that put Takayama down, and after rising to his feet the Japanese titleholder clearly felt it imperative to make a return statement. Realizing how dire his situation was becoming, Takayama (27-7, 10 KOs) looked to put some hurt on the heavier-hitting Rodriguez, outthrowing and outlanding his foe in the fourth.

Takayama reverted to his original plan to box in the fifth but Rodriguez’s continuous pressure would not allow Takayama to remain comfortable for long stretches. The back and forth action continued along the same pattern for the remainder of the fight, with Rodriguez’s heavier shots going against Takayama’s lighter, more voluminous punches.

Both men seemed weary in the final round, and though the cards indicated that only a knockout could’ve won it for Takayama, both fought as if the fight was hanging in the balance. After roughhouse maneuvers drew a warning from the referee for Rodriguez, the Mexican banger stunned Takayama with another right hand.

The win marks the fourth straight for Rodriguez, who has emerged as a major player in the sport’s lightest divisions after being stopped in seven rounds by Roman Gonzalez last September. Heading into the fight, Takayama was rated no. 4 by THE RING at 105 pounds while Rodriguez was rated sixth.

Stephen Smith “Koko” and Zsolt Erdei and Károly Balzsay were some of the boxers present who joined the children with disabilities at the event held on Saturday August 9 in Hungary to try out the special sporting equipment.

The event was particularly special since it represented Károly Balzsay’s first public appearance since fighting off cancer. During the evening we held a running festival, where more than 400 runners joined the children and us.

We are happy to support Suhanj! Foundation in helping share the joy of sport with the disabled.

WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28KOs) is planning to move up in weight to the lightweight division. Garcia is still involved in a legal tussle with promotional firm Top Rank. Garcia claims that his promotional contract expired and Top Rank believes they still have him under contract.

Garcia last fought on January 25th in New York City, when he won a twelve round unanimous decision over challenger Juan Carlos Burgos.

“I have no date yet. I’m like everyone else, waiting for a date and an opponent, [waiting] to see what Top Rank says. Right now there has been nothing,” Garcia siad.

“I was waiting for a unification with Takashi Miura (WBC) or Takashi Uchiyama (WBA), but there was nothing [from Top Rank], so I’m going to look for more challenges at 135-pounds.”

The bids are in for the mandatory fight between WBO bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda (30-0, 19KOs) and top rated challenger Alejandro Hernandez (28-10-2, 15KOs). Warriors Boxing, taking part on behalf of Kameda, secured the rights with a bid of $603,000 dollars. All Star Boxing, who have Hernandez, bid far less at $151,000 dollars. The date and location of the fight will be announced in the coming days.

Kameda debuted last month in the United States as part of the Saul Alvarez-Erislandy Lara undercard from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He knocked out Pungluang Sor Singyu in seven rounds. After the fight he signed an agreement with influential manager/adviser Al Haymon.

Hernandez became the mandatory challenger in June when he captured the WBO’s interim title with an upset decision over countryman Daniel Rosas.

The purse bid split is 80-20 in favor of the champion. Team Kameda says November 1 is being targeted for the fight, possibly at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Edgar-Ortega680

The Summer Season for Boxeo Telemundo Ford will end just as it began. Once again the popular boxing rivalry between Mexican and Puerto Rico will take center stage. In the main event Edgar Ortega (14-1, 10 KOs) of Mexico will take on Daniel Rosado (8-0, 7 KOs) of Puerto Rico. The bout is scheduled for 10 rounds and the WBO Latino welterweight title is on the line.

Ortega, like Rosado will be fighting in a televised main event on Telemundo for the first time. He is looking to win the WBO Latino belt, which can propel him into the world rankings of the WBO. He will also be fighting at home with a lot of support behind him. Fightnews caught up with Ortega just a few short days away from the fight.

Do you feel pressure with this fight being in your hometown?

There can always be pressure fighting at home but at the end of the day it’s just you and your opponent in the ring. It’s up to you go out there and give yourself the best chance of winning the fight.

Have you seen your opponent fight before?

I have not. If there is video of him I haven’t seen any. My team and I have our strategy and I’m looking to carry out the gameplan.

You have gone the 10 round distance before and have nearly twice as many fights as your opponent. Is this something you feel will work in your favor come Friday?

In terms of the 10 round distance, I definitely think it will give me an edge should the fight go 10 complete rounds. It’s really a mental thing if you think about it. Knowing that I have already done it and won gives me that much more confidence.

Your opponent has knocked out all but one of his opponents. You yourself have 10 knockouts. Do you feel you are the more proven puncher with the level of opposition you have fought thus far?

Some might think that a lot of my knockouts have come against smaller weights and that I’m not the puncher he is. My thinking is that if you’rr a puncher, you’re a puncher. Plain and simple.

This will be your first time headlining a Telemundo main event. Do you feel the need to do something special come Friday?

There will be a large viewing audience and I definitely want them to want to see me fight again on the network after this fight. I have trained hard for this fight and the fans can expect me to do my part to make this an exciting fight.

Arthur Abraham will be making the second defense of his WBO super-middleweight title against Paul Smith.

The bout between Abraham and Smith was announced yesterday and will take place at the Sparkassen-Arena in Kiel, Germany, on Sept. 27. Sauerland Event promoter, Kalle Sauerland, made the annoucement and offered the following words:

”We are delighted to announce this world championship fight between ‘King’ Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith. There is a lot on the line for both men and I am sure this will make for a great spectacle on Sept. 27,” Sauerland said. “Smith has been waiting a long time for this opportunity and I fully expect him to do everything he possibly can to cause an upset. However, he is facing a dangerous Abraham, a hungry, in-form Abraham, who is looking to cement his position alongside the very best at the top of the super middleweight division.”

After winning back his WBO title from Robert Stieglitz in March, Abraham made his first successful title defense by beating Nikola Sjekloca two months later in a unanimous decision victory in May. Abraham is now looking forward to repeating some of his good fortune in Kiel.

‘This will be my fourth ring appearance in Kiel. I have won here three times before, two of them by knockout,” Abraham said. “My fight on Sept. 27 will be the first time I’ve defended my WBO super middleweight belt here and there is no way I am going to lose. I will retain my world championship and continue my winning streak at the Sparkassen-Arena.”

This will be Paul Smith’s (35-3, 20 KOs) first title shot and he hopes to make the most of it. He previously had a stint on “The Contender” reality series but the most notable opponents on his resume are James DeGeale and George Groves, both of whom knocked him out. Smith is, however, coming off a four-fight win streak, but against extremely low-level opposition that’s not exactly awe-inspiring. I mean one of his recent opponents, Jamie Ambler, has an incredible record of 10-52-2. ‘Nuff said.

Paul Smith is still excited for the opportunity anyways:

‘I am thrilled that the fight with Arthur Abraham has been confirmed,” Smith said. ”Arthur is a great champion, a real gentleman and a brilliant ambassador for the sport. I do believe that our styles will make for a great fight, but I just think that I am getting him at the right time. I know I can beat him and have seen things in him that I can capitalize on. I am sure it will be a spectacular show and I’m proud to be fighting for a world title over in Germany.”

Well what else did you expect him to say?!

Mexico City, Mexico: The team for WBO Bantamweight interim champion Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez of Mexico will request purse bids for the mandatory fight against Champion Tomoki “El Mexicanito” Kameda.

The WBO had given the parties involved a 30 day period in order to negotiate and make the fight happen within 90 days. If there is no agreement they will call for purse bids.

“After receiving the letter from the WBO, I have tried to reach out to Kameda´s team with no success, we will request the WBO to call for purse bids” said Promoter Tuto Zabala, Jr. “We want to fulfill our obligations with the organization, and after talking with “Payasito” and my partner Ricardo Maldonado Jr we have the same goal which is bringing the fight to our hometown of Mexico City. We know him very well after sparring many times in Mexico and we are sure of the victory” he added.

Tomorrow Hernandez will be given the recently acquired belt by WBO ratings chairman Luis Perez at the Boxeo TELEMUNDO Ford show at El Plaza Condesa, which is headlined by David “Severo” Carmona who faces Ricardo Rodriguez for the WBO World Youth super flyweight title.

Flush with the success that he had from taking the WBO junior welterweight title from Ruslan Provodnikov back on June 14th, Star Boxing’s pride and joy, Chris “The Fighting Pride of Huntington” Algieri, was eager to talk about winning the belt and his challenge to the great Manny Pacquiao for Pac Man’s WBO welterweight belt scheduled to happen on November 22nd.

His right eye, badly damaged in his title winning effort, appeared to be completely healed, as well as the broken nose he suffered. Algieri looked in every way a superstar.

HBO Boxing After Dark at The Barclays Center.

Algieri became a boxing world champion in only his twentieth pro fight, but he explained, it isn’t the first time he became a world champion after a limited number of fights. “I became a kickboxing world champion in only my fourth fight.”

Algieri admitted that fighting Pacquiao, “Is surreal, because it is something I’ve been thinking about so long, and visualizing this moment and now it’s here.”

He actually began to discuss the possibility of challenging Pacquiao even before he won the Provodnikov fight. The prospect was initially discussed by Top Rank’s head man, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum.

“I didn’t know how real it was,” said the newly crowned champ. “I know that Bob Arum mentioned it prior to the Provodnikov bout, and generally when Bob says something it’s a big deal. There were murmurs about the fight and about a week later (after the Provodnikov fight) we had worked out the details.”

The naysayers have come out of the woodwork for Pacquiao fight as they did for the Provodnikov contest, although he admits the critics are a lot more unsympathetic regarding the Pacquiao matchup.

“I am a self motivating person,” he said, “It doesn’t affect me negatively or positively.”

Algieri’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing, is taking a backseat to the venerable Bob Arum for the November 22nd showdown with Pacquiao.

“Chris is going to carry this promotion, and that’s why Bob is the top promoter in the industry,” explained DeGuardia. “Bob’s a Hall of Famer who’s been in the business for fifty years promoting top fighters…..Ali, Leonard, Hearns, you name it. He saw it before the Provodnikov fight. He knew it before. He saw it because it’s there, Chris will be the attraction.”

Algieri is very confident of a victory over Pacquiao and stated that he will gain even more confidence during training.

“I’m not the same person I will be on November 22nd as I am today.”

According to Algieri, Pacquiao has not fought his style in years and although Algieri is moving up in weight, he is actually the bigger man.

“Margarito was bigger,” he pointed out. “But not an athletic guy; a straight forward slugger. Not a guy who is going to be moving pushing, pulling, using his jab. Manny kills those guys; he picks them apart.”

Algieri said that he has watched all of Pacquiao’s fights and knows that he will be facing a great fighter, but he remains confident.

Much has been said about drug testing especially where Pacquiao is concerned, given his history of being questioned about whether he is juicing, but this does not worry Algieri.

“I think every fighter should be blood tested. There’s no reason not to. When I got approached about drug testing I said of course. I got nothing to hide. I have no fear about what I put into my body and what I can do.”

He added that he has no comment about whether Pacquiao uses PEDs and he has confidence that Pacquaio will be carefully tested and all things should be fair.

He believes that when Pacquiao was smaller he was an explosive powerhouse and that he is more affected by his moving up in weight than the fact that he is aging (Pac Man will be a month short of 36 by fight time).

“I’m expecting what he is,” said Algieri. “He’s an explosive guy, very quick. In and out, I think he’s one of the best in and out, side to side guys out there. He puts on pressure without just going forward. Ruslan is a straight ahead guy and puts on pressure. Manny puts on pressure too but it’s more like an ebb and flow, he cuts an angle and moves laterally. He can use his jab when he needs to, he can box. He fires fast combinations moving in and out.”

HBO Boxing After Dark at The Barclays Center.

Will Algieri be faster?

“We will find out that night,” countered Algieri. “You know what the great equalizer is, and I say this all the time, the jab. I don’t care if he’s faster, I don’t care if he hits harder, I don’t care if he’s bigger, stronger; I got a jab and I got a brain. That’s the great equalizer. Not power, it’s the jab.”

He said that the biggest thing that he learned about himself against Provodnikov was that strategy comes before pride.

“I learned that I’m not too proud to take a knee,” admitted the fighter. “When I was younger I would have been too proud to go down. He (Provodnikov) didn’t knock me down a second time, I took a knee. I was trying to figure out what was going on. At the time my eye was still blurry. After I got up I could see. So my vision returned. I don’t think I would have done that back in my kickboxing days.”

HBO Boxing After Dark at The Barclays Center.

It may be to the advantage of Algieri that due to the time differential between Macao and the US, he will be entering the ring at 10 AM local time so that HBO PPV can broadcast the event in the evening hours in the US.

“I’m a morning person,” said Chris. “I hate having to fight at midnight.”

He said that he feels fine now, but he is not sparring yet, and won’t until doctors clear the broken nose he also suffered in that first round.

Algieri is healing fast. “The eye was opened on the second day,” he recalled. “The swelling was gone in the first week. I was on FOX Business on Wednesday. I put shades on and you couldn’t tell.”

He anticipates he’ll begin training in earnest about eight to ten weeks before the big fight.

“The end of August or early September.”

An admitted gym rat: “This is the longest I’ve been out of the gym,” admitted Algieri, “Because the doctors advised me to.”

THE PRESS TOUR

He is already looking forward to the press tour, the travel to China, and the training that awaits him.

“I like the fact that we will have a civil tour,” said Algieri. “We are not going to get aggressive, there’s not going to be some ugly stare downs.”

After a tour of Asian cities including Shanghai, Macao, and others, it’s off to a tour of the United States. So far DeGuardia is sure of only Los Angeles and New York as tour stops, with more to be added later. DeGuardia called this the biggest fight in that part of the world since Tyson-Douglas back in 1990 in Tokyo.

A FAMILY NOTE

Chris’ dad was at this interview and attends all his fights including the Provodnikov fight. His mother stays home. How did she react when she saw his damaged eye?

“Funny story,” stated Chris. “This guy here,” pointing at his father, “Almost had a heart attack. Mom? Cool, just happy I won. It didn’t faze her one bit.”

SES Boxing held the final press conference on Monday for Saturday’s clash between two-time world champion Robert Stieglitz against WBO #9 Sergey “The Ghost” Khomitsky (29-10-2, 12 KOs) at the Anhalt Arena in Dessau, Germany. The presser took place in front of an old transport aircraft named JU 52 at the “Hugo Junkers Museum”

Robert Stieglitz: “I am forewarned. A ghost always comes surprisingly and unexpectedly. I’ve prepared myself for the fighting style Khomitsky so I’m safe. He can’t scare me. Khomitsky is good for surprises, well rested and he boxes smart. His victory for the WBO European championship against Buglioni in England was no coincidence. One may never, ever underestimate him. He is a daredevil! If I want to get back “my belt,” then the only possible way is with a clear victory over this “ghost!”

Sergey Khomitsky: I’m something of a fear maker! That’s where my fight name ‘The Ghost’ comes from. I make pressure, move forward, makes surprises and many opponents can’t adjust. I know Stieglitz from many fights I watched myself. He will be defeated!

SES promoter Ulf Steinforth: We want the WBO world title of Abraham as quickly as possible! Khomitsky was the highest rated fighter who would face Robert. A WBO European champion must not and will not be underestimated!

In other action, WBO #8 rated light heavyweight Dominic Boesel (15-0, 5 KOs) will take on Daniel Regi (22-9, 11 KOs), former light heavyweight world title challenger and WBO #3/WBA #7 rated Robin Krasniqi (41-3, 16 KOs) meets WBA #8/WBO #15 Oleksandr Cherviak (14-3-1, 4 KOs) and female middleweight champion Christina Hammer (17-0, 8 KOs) moves down to jr middleweight to take on the very dangerous multiple world and European champion Anne Sophie Mathis (27-3, 23 KOs).

A QUARTER of a century after Jeff “Hitman’’ Harding scored one of the greatest upsets ever in world championship boxing in Atlantic City, another raw-boned Aussie, Blake Caparello, is confident he can create his own piece of history there next week.

Like Harding against the fearsome, rock-faced Dennis Andries, Melbourne’s unfancied Caparello will fight for a version of the world light-heavyweight title against one of the most dangerous sluggers in the fight game.

The bout takes place at the Revel Resort beside the Atlantic Ocean, just a couple of kilometres from the Atlantic City Convention Centre where Harding, behind on points, knocked out the WBC world champ in the last round in 1989.

Caparello, 27, a carpenter who grew up in Greenvale and attended St Bernard’s College in Essendon, is undefeated in 20 pro fights but will be a heavy underdog against Russia’s WBO champion Sergey Kovalev, who has 24 wins, 22 by KO.

The fight comes just a week after Daniel Geale fights another heavy puncher, middleweight Gennady Golovkin in their world title fight at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon (Australian time).

Back in 1989 I was part of Harding’s team in Atlantic City when the Johnny Lewis-trained fighter rose from the canvas and, with two black eyes closing up around his broken nose, scored a heart-stopping knockout in the last round to take the WBC title.

Few fights involving an Australian have been so intense and dramatic.

Harding’s victory was all about brute strength and an indomitable spirit. He took heavy punishment throughout the fight before his stunning fightback against the West Indian-born British bulldog.

Caparello has a chance to score an upset of similar proportions on Sunday week but it shapes as a far different contest to Harding and Andries 25 years ago.

While Harding was all brawn and brute strength, Caparello is an artist as difficult to fathom as the Continental shelf.

361505-fc08d22e-1144-11e4-ae81-95568c4ed36eBlake Caparello taunts Allan Green in a Melbourne bout.

He’s a tall rangy southpaw who befuddles and bewilders his opponents instead of battering them.

He’s quick and slick, able to score punches from unusual angles and if he fights at his best can frustrate and confuse the heavy hitting Russian.

He and his trainer Sam Labruna have worked on a number of contingencies for whatever bombs Kovalev hurls their way.

“There’s no pressure for me,’’ Caparello told reporters this week.

“All the hype is about Sergey, so the pressure is on him. I feel fitter, stronger and sharper then ever.

“The good thing about my style is I can adapt to any styles and anything he brings on fight night. I’m very confident because I’ve put in the hard work.’’

No one has ever gone beyond eight rounds with Kovalev, 31, but the Russian gives Caparello plenty of respect.

“Blake is undefeated,’’ Kovalev says. “I am taking him serious. Blake has an advantage because he is coming to get the title. He is hungry and has nothing to lose. It is my job to keep the title.’’

With history as a guide, everyone expected Rigondeaux to waltz his way to a decision or late round stoppage…

WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (14-0, 9 KOs), the fighter everyone loves to hate, took care of business at Venetian Macao’s Cotai Arena today by flattening Sod Kokietgym (63-3-1, 28 KOs) at just 1:44 of the first round.

With history as a guide, everyone expected Rigo to waltz his way to a decision or late round stoppage. But El Chacal has heard the detractors, who run the gamut from HBO to Bob Arum to Nonito Donaire, no less than everyone in between. But if Rigondeaux intended to make a statement, to prove that even he has a killer instinct, he succeeded, at the expense of a Thai challenger with tons of experience.

Rigo the thinking man’s fighter used his head in China. After landing straight left followed by a right hook, the Cuban southpaw butted heads with Kokietgym who went down as if shot. Referee Mark Nelson ruled an accident, waved on the fighters, and the action continued.

The fighters touched gloves—and El Chacal, wasting no time, pulled a Floyd Mayweather. A quick 1-2 dropped Sod a second time…and that’s all she wrote.

The Thai protested the stoppage. The crowd in Macao booed.

Rigondeaux, who remains undefeated, just can’t win.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — Carolina Raquel Duer of Argentina defended her World Boxing Organization bantamweight title for the second time.

Duer, popularly known as “The Turk,” defeated Ana Maria Lozano of Venezuela by unanimous decision on Friday night in Lanus, a city in Buenos Aires Province, to take the crown in the 115- to 118-pound class. After the 10 rounds, two judges scored the bout 98-92, and one had it 97-93.

The Jewish boxer raised her professional record to 17-3.

Duer, 35, was the WBO super flyweight champion, for fighters weighing 112 pounds to 115 pounds — a title she defended six times. She is the first Jewish woman to hold a WBO crown.

The country’s National Public Television covered the fight live and broadcast it free under a federal program designed to make satellite television more accessible, including in high definition.

Duer this year began to announce boxing on National Public Television, and she will be in Las Vegas on Sept.  13 as the special commentator for Argentine TV at the rematch between American boxer Floyd Mayweather and the Argentine Marcos Maidana.

Duer, a favorite in Argentina, is the daughter of Syrian immigrants. She attended the Jaim Najman Bialik Primary School in Buenos Aires and spent more than a month in Israel in her younger years working on a kibbutz and touring the country.
