New York – For a boxer who is officially taking part in his 7th pro fight, there are a lot of story lines for Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3KOs). On June 11th, he has the opportunity to become a two time two weight division world title should he defeat Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez.

The highly decorated amateur could foresee himself winning titles up to 147 lbs. That would almost certainly pave a way to Canastota and the Boxing Hall of Fame. Those are fights that Lomachenko isn’t particularly focused on but would welcome the praise if so.

“I’m going to be proud to make records in the history book as an athlete its very very important,” Lomachenko told BoxingScene.com. “I never thought about become a hall of fame fighter but If people choose me to be there, it would be an honor.”

True to the form of a fighter, Lomachenko still dawns on his first and only pro loss to Orlando Salido in 2014. In a fight where Salido failed to make weight and rehydrated to a welterweight, the contest saw the Mexican slugger fight his way to a foul-filled twelve round split decision victory.

Salido would then move up to 130-pounds, while Lomachenko pursued his goal of winning a world title at 126 – which he did one fight later with a majority decision win over Gary Russell Jr.

On June 4th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, Salido will challenge undefeated Francisco Vargas for the WBC super featherweight championship.

Lomachenko plans to sit ringside that night, with the hope that Salido comes through with a big title win. The two-time Olympic gold medal winner hopes to rematch Salido in a year-end unification.

“It gives me a lot of motivation, Lomachenko said. “I’m going to be cheering for Salido to make sure he wins so I can get my revenge.”

By Steve Kim –

With Nicholas Walters continuing to waffle on a June 11th showdown against Vasyl Lomachenko (5-1, 3KOs), a new name has emerged to face the left-handed stylist from the Ukraine on this date.

A source has informed BoxingScene.com that current WBO 130-pound titlist  Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez is now in the mix to face Lomachenko, who is interested in moving up in weight and fighting for a major world title.

Martinez does make sense that not only does he hold a major belt but he’s also Puerto Rican and this fight would take place at the Madison Square Garden in New York City – the day before the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Martinez, a rugged brawler, is coming off a pair of hellacious bouts against Orlando Salido in 2015.

He was initially scheduled to face Miguel Berchelt earlier this month in Mexico, but withdrew with a hand injury. Berchelt went forward, capturing a vacant WBO interim-title with a knockout of George Jupp of the UK.

According to Puerto Rico Best Boxing, who promote Martinez (29-3-2, 17 KO’s), the champion needed to take a break from training for at least four weeks – which gives him more than enough time to be healthy and fully prepared by the June date.

Lomachenko was last seen in November, when he knocked out Romulo Koasicha in the tenth round on the Tim Bradley-Brandon Rios undercard from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Vasyl Lomachenko outclassed Romulo Koasicha in Las Vegas and immediately called for bigger and better nights.

The Ukrainian superstar controlled the fight from the start ahead of Timothy Bradley and Brandon Rios’ showdown at the Thomas & Mach Center, parading his undoubted talent in regular and fluent bursts before finishing it off in the 10th rounds.

A succession of unanswered punches saw Koasicha in trouble before a left to the stomach, followed by a brutal one to the ribs, left him on his knees and unable to beat the count.

Lomachenko (5-1-KO3) kept the WBO featherweight title that he picked up on his second professional fight in 2013 but the Seoul Olympic gold medallist is already looking to show his skills on bigger stages.

“I want to bring something new to boxing,” Lomachenko said.

“I want to be known to fans and appreciated as a ‘boxer-painter’ in regards to speed, footwork, punching power – an art form inside the ring.

“I have looked at videos of many great champions like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Frazier who each had special qualities.

“I never say one particular fighter is the best ever because each has a special unique style of fighting.”

Promoter Bob Arum hinted at a showdown with Guillermo Rigondeaux, who has been stripped of both his super-bantamweight world titles and is now up in the lightweight division with Lomachenko.

Another former 122lb champion, Leo Santa Cruz, has also moved up while there is still talk of Lomachenko giving Gary Russell Jr a rematch, having beaten the American ace in March 2013 to become a record-breaking world champion.

Two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist and reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko (4-1, 2 KOs) kicked off Fight Week today with a training camp media workout at the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy in Oxnard, Calif. Lomachenko will defend his title on Saturday night against WBO #7 world-rated contender Romulo Koasicha (24-4,14 KOs), of San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Here is what Lomachenko and his manager Egis Klimas had to say:

Vasyl Lomachenko: “I want to bring something new to boxing. I want to be known to fans and appreciated as a ‘boxer-painter’ in regards to speed, footwork, punching power — an art form inside the ring. I have looked at videos of many great champions like Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Frazier who each had special qualities. I never say one particular fighter is the best ever because each has a special unique style of fighting. Every fight has challenges. I looked at some video of my opponent who fought Lee Selby. In the middle of that fight, my opponent did a transition and fought with a different type of style against Selby. These are the situations you must deal with on the night of a fight.

“Who would I like to fight some day? Getting Salido back into the ring would be something I would like to see.” Lomachenko, suffered his only loss to Salido via split decision in his second pro fight after Salido came in overweight.

Egis Klimas: “We have not seen the best of Vasyl Lomachenko, maybe something like 40 percent of what we are going to see. He pushes himself 120 percent. He likes to spar 15 rounds daily against four different opponents. No one trains harder. He proved he was the best amateur boxer and he will prove that he is the best professional fighter.”

Lomachenko vs. Koasicha will be the co-main event to the 12-round welterweight rumble between two-division world champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY JR., (32-1-1, 12 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., in his second reign as World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion, and former world champion BRANDON “Bam Bam” RIOS (33-2-1, 23 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif. Bradley and Rios fought in Fights of the Year in 2013 and 2012, respectively.

LAS VEGAS — Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is enamored with featherweight titleholder Vasyl Lomachenko and he makes no apologies. Arum views the 2008 and 2012 Olympic gold medalist for Ukraine as one of boxing’s future pound-for-pound talents.

“I think the sky’s the limit for this kid,” Arum said. “He can be one of the great, great fighters of our time.”

So when it came time for Top Rank to select who it wanted to feature in its one televised undercard spot on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao show, Arum gave the coveted slot to Lomachenko, a fighter who could someday replace Mayweather and Pacquiao atop the pound-for-pound list. He will make his second title defense against Gamaliel Rodriguez (25-2-3, 17 KOs), 28, of Puerto Rico, on Saturday night (Showtime PPV/HBO PPV, 9 ET) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“We think he is going to be one of our big superstars and he is advanced enough to be on this card,” Arum said. “The other guys we have that we think can be superstars are not as advanced and the only other guy we considered for the Mayweather-Pacquiao card was (21-year-old lightweight) Felix Verdejo. He just fought brilliantly (last) Saturday and he is scheduled to go again on June 13 in New York on the Puerto Rican Day parade weekend, so he was not available for this card. Lomachenko was perfect for this spot.”

And it’s a huge one. Mayweather-Pacquiao is the biggest fight in many years and expected to break the pay-per-view record. That means a lot of people will get a look at Lomachenko, including many who rarely watch boxing. Perhaps they will take a liking to him, which could go a long way toward helping to make him the star Arum thinks he can be.

“I want people to see what a performer this guy is and people will fall in love with him,” Arum said.

So what does Lomachenko (3-1, 1 KO) think about being on such a big show?

“It means that I can prove and show that I am at the same level as Pacquiao and Mayweather,” the confident Lomachenko said through translator/manager Egis Klimas.

The 27-year-old southpaw realizes how significant it is to be in this position.

“I understand how big of a show this is,” Lomachenko said, adding that being on the card was even bigger to him than the Olympics. “I’m very excited. When Egis told me I was going to be on the card I couldn’t even believe it. So I am very, very happy.”

Said Klimas, “We’re very happy and thankful to Bob Arum for giving us the opportunity. Vasyl is happy. It cannot be better. What better is there to ask for? What better card could you ask to be on? This is better than carrying your own show as the main event.”

“I really believe this kid will be pound-for-pound material. He’s extraordinarily talented and he understands the sport like a real genius.”

Bob Arum

Lomachenko said he is a fan of Mayweather and Pacquiao. He got a chance to meet Pacquiao when he fought on his card in Macau. But he has never met Mayweather, which he has wanted to do.

Klimas said when he first flew Lomachenko to Las Vegas for a meeting with Arum before he signed, Lomachenko asked him he could meet Mayweather – who lives in Las Vegas — and take a picture with him.

“He liked Mayweather a lot. He was a big fan,” Klimas said. “He watched every Mayweather fight and Pacquiao fight and followed them in boxing.”

Lomachenko didn’t get to meet Mayweather then but hopes to at Friday’s weigh-in and maybe even get take that photo with him.

Being on the Mayweather-Pacquiao undercard is just another step on Lomachenko’s fast rise since turning pro October 2012. If Lomachenko had his way he would have fought for a world title in his pro debut. Arum understandably could not deliver that, so Lomachenko looked sensational in his debut against a legitimate opponent in Jose Ramirez and then Arum delivered him a world title bout in his second fight.

Lomachenko lost a split decision to hugely experienced former titleholder Orlando Salido, who did not make weight (so he could not win the belt) and repeatedly hit Lomachenko with low blows. Because it was a competitive fight and Salido had an unfair weight advantage, Lomachenko was approved to fight for the still-vacant belt in his third fight against fellow former Olympian Gary Russell Jr.

Lomachenko took him to school and won the belt by decision last June in a superb performance. In November, Lomachenko made his first defense, scoring a shutout decision — despite an injured hand — against Chonlatam Piriyapinyo on the Pacquiao-Chris Algieri undercard in Macau, China.

“The beautiful thing about this guy is he will fight anybody — the best at 126 pound, the best you got at 122 or the best at 130,” said Top Rank matchmaker Brad “Abdul” Goodman. “He will fight anybody. He doesn’t duck anyone. He’s a hard to guy to match because he’s so good that nobody wants to fight him.

“Lomachenko is such a focused guy. I’m sure he’s appreciative that he’s on this card but he would train and be at his best no matter what show he’s on. He’s very dedicated.”

The fight with Rodriguez is Lomachenko’s first on a new five-year contract extension he, Klimas and Arum recently worked out.

“Vasyl is very happy with what Top Rank has done for him,” Klimas said. “Bob has done more for him than was written in the contract.”

What better way to celebrate the new deal that by an appearance on the biggest card of the decade?

“What other reason would Bob put Vasyl on the card if he didn’t think he was going to be a star,” Klimas said. “Of course, they believe in him and they want him, they have a trust in him and they know he is going to be a huge star in no time. Give him a couple of years and I have no doubt he will be there on top of the pound-for-pound list.”

Rodriguez is not expected to pose much danger but Klimas said they have taken the fight very seriously, especially given the big audience expected to be watching.

“Any opponent is a dangerous opponent so we’re taking him seriously. But I’m sure he never faced anyone like Lomachenko and Lomachenko probably faced more talented guys and better boxers than Rodriguez, nothing against Rodriguez,” Klimas said.

If all goes well for Lomachenko against Rodriguez and fellow titleholder Nicholas Walters wins a proposed June 13 HBO fight at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York — opponent to be determined — Top Rank is hoping to match them with each other in a unification bout later this year.

“I want anybody who holds a title in the division so, Walters? Of course I want to fight him,” Lomachenko said.

Arum believes a fight with Walters would be a big test but that it’s one Lomachenko is capable of handling, even so early in his professional career.

“I really believe this kid will be pound-for-pound material,” Arum said. “He’s extraordinarily talented and he understands the sport like a real genius.”

Saturday night in Macau, China, WBO featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko returns to action against experienced veteran Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo of Thailand. Lomachenko is perhaps the greatest amateur boxer in history and has already become a professional world-title holder within his first three fights.

Top Rank seems anxious to expand his visibility, and there can be few better venues for that than a Manny Pacquiao card. Piriyapinyo is an obscure opponent who no doubt came cheap since he lives much closer to Macau than a North American or European star.

This fight is all about building up Lomachenko for bigger things next year.

Obviously, Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo is a far more experienced professional than Vasyl Lomachenko. He’s fought over 50 more fights and 350 more rounds.

But the quality of fighter Lomachenko faced as an elite amateur is generally far beyond the vast majority of Piriyapinyo’s competition. Aside from a challenge against Chris John in 2012, he’s faced obscure and even low-quality opposition.

The third and final day of the 27th annual WBO Convention kicked off yesterday morning, and as anticipated, the open forum of the championship and ratings committees was not without fireworks. The day began with a short video presentation of the charitable work done by both the WBO and numerous WBO champions to promote the WBO “Kids Drug Free” program.

The second order of business came when Vice President John Duggan proposed a resolution that clarified that the position of “vice president of the China Zone” is now vacant and that the China commission is not to use any trademarks or logos. The resolution would also transfer this over to the Asia Pacific region. The resolution would be passed unanimously.

There then followed a brief discussion of the 2015 budget and a proposed amendment to the budget, which passed as well. Following this budget discussion, Joe Cortez briefly spoke of the role of instant replay in Nevada. “Instant replay in Nevada has been in play for two years,” Cortez said, “but it hasn’t been used.” Cortez noted that in Nevada only a referee has the discretion to overturn his or her decision, before adding that the “door was open” to any adjustments that needed to be made in regards to the rule as it stands in Nevada.

From there WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri spoke of the importance of being a role model as a champion.

“Being a champion is a world wide title,” Algieri said, “there are a lot of eyes on you. A lot of young eyes. As a champion you want to present yourself to the world as a champion. As a role model.” Algieri was subsequently presented the WBO Gordy Volkman Man of the Year Award for Outstanding Community Service.

Following the presentation of the Gordy Volkman Award to Algieri, the discussion then turned to where to host the 2015 WBO Convention. Although the Philippines had been the early front runner, having been named in 2013 as the location of the 2015 convention, it was passed over for Florida. Citing concerns over the recent typhoon in the Philippines, and the impact that had on the feasibility of hosting the event there, President Valcarcel accepted a recommendation for the 2015 WBO Convention to be held in Orlando, Florida. Puerto Rico was named as a backup location. President Valcarcel, however, indicated a strong desire to eventually have the WBO convention in the Philippines in the near future.

A brief video fallowed in which highlights of the 2013 WBO Convention in Budapest was shown. Heavyweight Charles Martin was awarded the NABO fighter of the year award at that time as well as several other special recognition awards to journalist Pedro Fernandez, Ulf Steinforth, and Wladimir Klitschko. Wilfried Sauerland was given an award after having been named “European Promoter of the Year” as well.

From there the ever contentious championship and ratings committee kicked off with their session.

This started in the mini-flyweight division, where Japanese matchmaker Ulysses Sato pushed to have his fighter enter the WBO rankings.

There were no requests at junior flyweight and only one at flyweight (to move an undefeated European champion into the WBO ranks). However, the relative lack of controversy in the lowest weight classes was not a harbinger of what would follow, as the discussions became more intensive starting with the junior bantamweight division. Representatives for #5 ranked Paul Butler requested a move to #1 or, in the alternative, to have the winner of the Paul Butler-Jamie Conlan fight be named the mandatory challenger. Conlan is ranked #7 by the WBO. Although Frank Warren’s request to have the winner of the Butler-Conlan fight named “interim champion” was denied, the committee and President Valcarcel did agree to name the winner of that fight as mandatory challenger for champion Omar Narvaez.

At bantamweight several promoters made arguments to have their fighters move into the top ten, most notably #13 ranked Pungluang Sor Sinyu and #14 ranked Lee Haskins.

At junior featherweight the executive committee did acknowledge the difficulties that Guillermo Rigondeaux was having finding opponents willing to take him on. Hedi Taouab Mohammed initially pushed to have his fighter, #4 ranked Zsolt Bedak, move up in the rankings before President Valcarcel inquired about a possible matchup between Bedak and #2 ranked Genesis Servania.

At featherweight a compelling argument was put forth by representatives of King Sports to have undefeated Colombian banger Miguel Marriaga move into the top ten. A proposed fight between #8 ranked British bomber Mark McCollough and #5 ranked Polish fighter Kamil Laszczyk was also discussed, as well as the possibility of the winner of that fight moving up into the top four. Ulysses Sato made a push to have Filipino Mark Gil Melligen, the #13 ranked WBO Oriental champion, move into the top ten.

A familiar name was brought up in the junior lightweight discussions as Main Events pushed to have Edner Cherry return to the top ten on the basis of his nine fight winning streak. President Valcarcel seemed open to the proposal.

At lightweight it appeared highly likely that Juan Diaz might move up from #3 to #1 after the current #1 contender, Ray Beltran, fights the WBO champion Terence Crawford. The prospect of the #1 slot opening up brought out numerous other requests, including one from representatives of #4 ranked Anthony Crolla. However, that request was immediately challenged by Frank Warren, who reminded the executive committee that Crolla “never fought anyone in the WBO top 15” before offering his fighter, #9 ranked Terry Flanagan as a strong candidate to move up.

At junior welterweight the recognition that the title may be at play in the coming months also led to a contentious and colorful discussion. Ruslan Provodnikov’s camp made an argument to have him leapfrog #1 ranked Lucas Matthysse. Several fighters had representatives push to have them move into the top ten, including Emanuel Taylor and veteran Paul Spadafora.

In the welterweight division several promoters jockeyed to have their fighters move up, with the most notable being undefeated Canadian prospect Mikael Zewski, undefeated Fredrick Lawson, and the winner of the upcoming Jeff Horn-Robson Assis fight. Horn, the WBO Oriental Champion, is ranked #11 while Assis, the WBO Latino champion, is ranked #12.

In the junior middleweight division Frank Warren pushed to have #10 ranked Liam Smith move up while representatives of #13 ranked Sirimongkol Singwancha also pushed to have the Thai based fighter move into the top ten.

In the middleweight division the biggest news came when the WBO championship and rating committee voted unanimously to name the winner of a proposed four fighter elimination as the top middleweight. The first fight, between #4 ranked Andy Lee and #1 ranked Matt Korobov, would then face the winner of the Billy Saunders –Chris Eubank fight. Saunders is currently ranked #2 while Eubanks is ranked #9. Also noteworthy in the discussions regarding the middleweight division were proposals to move Abraham Han into the world rankings as well as a push to have Willie Monroe Jr. move up in the rankings.

In the light heavyweight division several fighters received pushes to move up the rankings including #11 ranked Isidro Ranoni Prieto, who already is emerging as arguably the most popular fighter ever from Paraguay.

In the cruiserweight division a second four fighter elimination looks likely as the winner of the upcoming Tony Bellew-Nathan Cleverly fight would fight either #1 ranked Krzysztof Glowacki or #3 ranked Nuri Seferi with the winner being named the mandatory for WBO Champion Marco Huck. Bellew is currently ranked #4 while Cleverly is currently ranked #5.

In the heavyweight division the discussion revolved around Wladimir Klitschko and who his next mandatory challenger would be, as well as when he would be required to fight that fighter. After some discussion, it became apparent that the winner of the upcoming Tyson Fury-Dereck Chisora fight would be named mandatory challenger to the WBO champion, although the timetable of that mandatory defense was still not set in stone.

Rounding off the event was the gala banquet in which the family of the recently deceased Dan Goossen was presented with an honorary WBO belt. Several other awards were handed out, including WBO Promoter of the year (Bob Arum), WBO Fight of the year (Crawford-Gamboa), WHO female fighter of the year (Carolina Duer), WBO fighter of the year (Sergey Kovalev), Spanish Network of the year (Telemundo), and an award to Vasyl Lomachenko, who was given an award for being the WBO champion with the brightest future. Rounding off the gala banquet was a touching and moving ceremony where both Joe Calzaghe and Oscar De La Hoya were awarded lifetime champion awards by the WBO. Both Calzage and De La Hoya gave moving speeches about their ties to the WBO, and how important the WBO belt had meant to them as fighters.

Vasyl Lomachenko has beaten Gary Russell by majority decision to win the vacant WBO featherweight title in Carson City, California in just his third professional fight, equalling the record set by Saensak Muangsurin.

The Ukrainian dropped a split decision to Orlando Salido in March but, after the Mexican fighter was stripped of his belt for failing to make the weight, Lomachenko was handed a second chance against Washington DC’s Russell.

While the American did manage to hit his opponent with quick combos in the early rounds on Saturday night, Lomachenko grew into the bout and scored a left uppercut to the chin before stunning Russell right at the final bell.

The judges’ scorecards read 14-114, 116-112 and 116-112, with double Olympic and triple world amateur champion Lomachenko telling ESPN: “I’m very happy and excited to be a world champion.

“I just worked by the plan built by our team. I was just working hard.”

Russell added: “It’s definitely a little disappointing. But it’s all good – we are gladiators, we are warriors.

“We need to go back to the drawing board. He had good movement and I take my hat off to him.”

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO) scored a twelve round majority decision over previously undefeated Gary Russell Jr. (24-1, 14 KOs) to win the vacant WBO featherweight world championship on Saturday night at the outdoor StubHub Center in Carson, California. Lomachenko outworked Russell in rounds one and two, while Russell was busier in rounds three and four. Lomachenko had a big round five. After that Russell was able to keep Lomachenko at bay at times with non-stop punching, but the Ukrainian came on strong down the stretch. Scores were 114-114 (Lisa Giampa), 116-112 (Pat Russell), 116-112 (Max DeLuca). Lomachenko ties the record of Thailand’s Saensak Muangsurin in winning a world title in his third pro fight.

In a good action fight, former two-division world champion Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) won an entertaining ten round unanimous decision over Jesus Soto Karass (28-10-3, 18 KOs) in a super welterweight match. Scores were 97-93, 99-91, 99-91 in a bout that featured fierce exchanges.

Former light heavyweight world champion “Bad Chad” Dawson (32-3, 18 KOs) easily won his first start in 12 months with a first round KO over George “Honey Boy” Blades (23-6, 16 KOs). Dawson came in at 202 pounds and dropped Blades twice. Blades was counted out at 2:35.

In a battle of U.S. Olympian heavyweights, 2012 Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale (11-0, 10 KOs) scored an entertaining third round TKO against 2004 Olympian Devin Vargas (18-4, 7 KOs). Breazeale punished Vargas in round one, driving him back with thunderous shots. Breazeale dropped Vargas in round two. Vargas had a pretty good round three until turning his back to Breazeale after taking a shot over the ear. Time was 2:26.

In an ugly six round light heavyweight bout, Vyacheslav Shabransky (9-0, 7KO) won a unanimous decision victory over Michael Gbenga (15-15, 15KO). Shabransky forced the action but Gbenga chose to hold a lot including after any punches he threw, providing flashbacks of John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz. Shabransky scored a fknockdown in the first round from an accumulation of punches mostly on Gbenga’s gloves but Gbenga was never in serious trouble. Judges scored the bout 60-52, 59-53 and 69-52 in favor of Shabransky.

Sharif “The Lion” Bogere (25-1, 17KO) easily overpowered Miguel Zamudio (28-5-1, 16KO) to win a TKO victory at 3:00 of the third round when the bout was stopped by the ringside physician following the third round of a scheduled eight round junior welterweight bout. Bogere hurt Zamudio early and often with body shots and then went headhunting in the second and third rounds staggering him at various times.

Michael “The Bounty” Hunter (5-0, 3KO) easily outboxed Jerry Forrest (7-2, 6KO) en route to a shutout unanimous decision victory. All three judges scored it 80-72 in this eight round heavyweight bout although at 207 pounds, Hunter is just barely a heavyweight and looks better suited for the cruiserweight division.

In a four round welterweight bout, debuting Fabian Maidana (1-0), younger brother of Marcos Maidana, won a unanimous decision victory over fellow debutant, Eddie Diaz (0-1). Judges scored it 40-36 (twice) and 39-37 and there were no knockdowns.

Mark Hernandez (2-0) easily outboxed Dante Spinks (0-5) to earn a shutout victory of 40-36 on all three judges scorecards in a four round super welterweight bout.
