A word war that erupted between the camps of Nonito Donaire Jr. and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. could just be a prelude to a seething slugfest in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title fight this Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) at the Alamodome in Texas.

Apparently, one daring message on twitter courtesy of Vazquez’s wife had the `Filipino Flash’ annoyingly responding back, but in a manner epitomizing him as a former two-time world champion.

In his account, Donaire, 29, twitted, “Ok, didn’t know Vazquez’s wife talks crap, when WV2 (Wilfredo Vazquez Jr) doesn’t.”

The Filipino boxing star is obviously reacting to an earlier twit made by Jacklyn Roman, wife of Vazquez Jr., who told Donaire, `Your scared! See you there!

Although obviously irritated, Donaire said he’d rather not be dragged in a heated exchange of words, and instead, will just look forward at meeting the Puerto Rican namesake and son of former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez, this weekend in San Antonio.

“My wife and I have had nothing but respect for WV2, but if you all wanna talk crap, go ahead. I’m not like that,” Donaire said.

Vazquez’s wife allegedly only reacted on an earlier twit reportedly posted by Rachel Donaire, Nonito’s wife. But the Filipino couple denied having ever talked about or better yet, badmouthed Vazquez in social networking sites.

“Ok, like I said bro, I respected you and your dad. I don’t know why it turned to trash talking. But either way, I look forward to fighting someone like you,” added Donaire, the former flyweight and bantamweight champion of the world.

The exchange of twits further pumped up Donaire for the 12-round bout that co-headlines the World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight championship match between undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio.

Unlike his previous title fights, Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) admitted he has no problem making the 122-lbs. weight limit this time.

The California-based Filipino even had the benefit of taking dinner now as he did for two straight days at Joe’s Crab Shack.

“It feels good to eat everything and anything,” said Donaire, who arrived in the heart of Texas a day ahead of Vazquez.

After working out at the ChampionFit gym Tuesday, Donaire declared himself in the `best shape’ of his career.

“I feel so strong. I’m untouchable,” he told ABS-CBN reporter Dyan Castillejo later on.

Donaire has not lost in the last 10 years, a stretch that saw him on a 25-fight win streak, including a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision against Omar Andres Narvaez in his last bout four months ago at the Madison Square Garden in New York to successfully retain his WBO and WBC bantamweight titles.

In contrast, Vazquez (21-1, 18 KOs), suffered his first career loss just a year ago, a 12-round technical knockout against tough Mexican Jorge Arce to yield his WBO super-bantamweight crown.

But he’s coming off a third-round demolition of Roberto Carlos Leyva also last October.

San Antonio, Texas.

“Yo me he mantenido al margen y he sido respetuoso.

Former super bantamweight champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1, 18KOs) believes he is one week away from shocking the boxing world on February 4th in San Antonio, Texas – when he faces Filipino Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18KOs) for the vacant WBO title. HBO will televise. Vazquez feels that he corrected his mistakes from last May, when Jorge Arce knocked him out in the twelfth round of their Las Vegas clash.

“I prepared myself thoroughly and that’s why I stayed away from the media. I was alone in my gym. I changed my train schedule and included many new people to my team. And now I have no concerns. The pressure is on Nonito Donaire. The only ones I care to trust around me are my wife, my daughter and my team,” he said.

Vazquez respects Donaire and credits him for being a great athlete, but he also says the Filipino boxer is not invincible and although many people are trying to project him as such – he is not another Manny pacquiao either.

“It’s a great opportunity and he is a great athlete but not invincible. Everyone wants to imitate Manny Pacquiao and that is a big mistake. I have seen thousands of fighters and I have not seen anyone who can move in the ring like Edwin “Chapo” Rosario. These are qualities that life gives to one person to have originality. And I am calm and at peace. I’m going to surprise everyone, even the people who want to see me lose. I am ready to prove people wrong,” Vazquez said.

NONITO “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is very sharp and ready to put on a show when he goes after the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight title against former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 5 (Manila time) in a fight to be telecast live by ABS-CBN Channel 2.

Donaire’s trainer Robert Garcia, himself a former world champion, told the Manila Standard that Donaire was looking very sharp and ready to put on a spectacular performance.

“Donaire had different sparring partners that are heavier and stronger and he’s been able to spar very well against guys that are lightweights and junior lightweights and are not taking it easy,” Garcia revealed.

The trainer noted that undefeated Russian featherweight Evgeny Gradovich (11-0, 6 KOs) and Javier Garcia, the 22-year-old lightweight and trainer’s nephew, who has a record of 7-2 with 6 knockouts, have been working hard when they spar with Donaire.

“I’m hoping that Vazquez comes out with a good game plan because I don’t want the fight to be too easy,” said Garcia. “I’ve been watching tapes of Vazquez’ fights. He’s a fighter that became world champion, but is not very experienced (since he had no amateur background).”

However, Donaire’s trainer conceded that Vazquez is strong.

“He hits hard and is one of those Puerto Ricans that fights with pride and honor for his country, so he will be in good shape, but there are a lot of things I see that Nonito will take advantage of,” said Garcia.

While Donaire is comparatively slim, Garcia said “he is a couple of inches taller and then the reach will be much better for Nonito, but we are not taking this lightly at all because we know anything can happen in the sport. But I see a lot of things that will work for Nonito and should work out during the fight.” Ronnie Nathanielsz

With a new test and weight class waiting for him to conquer, “The Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire, Jr. stopped by dBoxing Source Radio show to discuss his rise in weights as well as his status as one of the top pound for pound boxers in the sport.

Asked about how he’s handling going up to 122 in camp thus far, Donaire welcomed the fact that he can eat more these days, but also admitted that he might have to stay at the weight for a little while as he intends to build up muscle weight and properly move up.

“I’m a taller guy for the lower weight class, but physically I’m lighter, because I’m skinny. So we’re just trying to build up a lot of muscle right now. I think I’ll be at 122 for a little bit. I’m struggling in creating more muscles and I’m working on that. To feel at home at 122 and 126, that’s something I need to work on as time goes by. Right now I’m looking at 122 as the most I’m going up until I can say that I can take care of these guys and then go up to 126,” Donaire said.

(Listen to this interview by clicking this link)

Staying at 122 to further establish his star isn’t a bad idea either with potential explosive match-ups against the likes of WBC champ Toshiaki Nishioka, newly crowned WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux and other names like Jorge Arce and Abner Mares who can easily move up to 122.

At the moment, however, Donaire is focused on the task as hand which is to win the WBO strap against its former owner Wilfedo Vazquez, Jr. at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 4.

“I’m the type to look at what’s in front of me. 122 is where I’m going to stand right now and see how I’m going to do with the stars at 122. If I can dominate like I dominated at 118, of course I want to challenge myself and move up to 126,” Donaire emphasized and added, “but  like I said, I am fighting Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. who is a tough oppoenent, and that’s my only focus right now.”

One of boxing’s brightest stars, Nonito Donaire, was again spotted training at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada, ahead of his February 4th HBO-televised clash with former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Donaire, the reigning WBO and WBC bantamweight champion, is moving up to the junior featherweight class to meet Vazquez for the vacant WBO belt, the same crown the Puerto Rican used to hold before his TKO loss to Jorge Arce in May of last year.

Under the watchful eye of his trainer Robert Garcia, Donaire sparred six spirited rounds with undefeated featherweight prospect Evgeny Gradovich. Originally hailing from Russia, Gradovich pressed Donaire and you could tell Nonito is still adjusting to the size difference with his move up in weight.

That being said, Donaire was equally effective with his blazing counters and didn’t back down from the challenge.

February 4th is inching closer and so too is Donaire beginning to become more well-rounded in camp.

Manager and trainer Olrando Pinero is confident that his boxer, super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (22-2, 15KOs), will get the winner of Nonito Donaire-Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., taking place on February 4th in San Antonio, Texas. Donaire and Vazquez will battle for the vacant WBO title. Oquendo, the WBO Latino champion, is the mandatory challenger after winning an eliminator last October with a second round knockout of Jose Luis Araiza. Oquendo has been unbeaten with eight wins since losing to Juan Manuel Lopez in 2008.

“Oquendo will be active on the card where Juanma will fight for the world title [against Orlando Salido] on March 10 or 31. Vazquez and Nonito Donaire will fight on February 4 for the WBO super bantamweight crown. And I am confident that Jonathan, the WBO’s official challenger, will be next. The winner between Vazquez and Donaire will then fight Oquendo. He has the quality to be world champion,” Pinero said.

Nonito Donaire knows his next fight won’t at all resemble his repulsively dull win over Omar Narvaez.

“The Filipino Flash” is heavily favored to defeat Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., too, but Donaire won’t have to worry about Vazquez keeping away from him and not actually trying to win.

“The last fight, the guy didn’t want to fight me,” Donaire said. “But I know that this fight, there’s not going to be room for any boring moments. Because I know that Vazquez, not only is he a good person, you know, he’s a great guy, but I know that he comes out there to fight. He wants to prove to himself, to Puerto Rico and the world that he belongs [on] this level of elite fighters.”

Vazquez lost the WBO super bantamweight title to an aged Jorge Arce on May 7 in Las Vegas, but Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) anticipates facing an improved Vazquez next month in their HBO co-feature.

“From what I saw in the Arce fight, he did a great job,” Donaire said. “But I know that a fighter of his caliber, with the blood that flows in him from his father, he just gets better. And I know that I’m going to fight the best Vazquez Jr. come Feb. 4.

“So I’m going to train to the best of my ability. And this is what makes boxing great, when you have two guys who respect each other, but we go out there to tear each other’s heads off.”

Mexico’s Arce (59-6-2, 45 KOs) and Vazquez (21-1-1, 18 KOs) were even on two scorecards heading into the 12th round of their bout, but Arce hurt him with an array of power punches against the ropes that caused Vazquez’s father/trainer to throw in the towel with 2:05 left in the fight. The 27-year-old Vazquez, who didn’t participate in a single amateur fight before making his pro debut five years ago, thinks his inexperience hurt him against Arce, who has had 67 fights in a 16-year pro career.

“I know everybody is thinking about the Arce fight,” Vazquez said. “I mean, I didn’t have any amateur experience and I got a lot of experience from that fight. I’m learning every day and I’m ready to win the world title.”

Former WBO Jr. Featherweightt champion Wilfredo ‘Papito’ Vazquez Jr. (21-1, 18KOs) is preparing for his big fight on February 4th in San Antonio, Texas against Filipino Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18KOs) for the vacant title that he once owned. The fight will be televised by HBO. The Puerto Rican boxer reportedly going to travel to Toluca, Mexico, to complete his training in what is going to be the biggest and most lucrative fight of his career. Vazquez Jr. will arrive in Toluca about 21 days before his trip to San Antonio.

Vazquez understands that he needs to be in the best physical condition for Donaire, who Top Rank is promoting as the next Manny Pacquiao. Donaire is also taking this fight very seriously. He’s been training in the Philippines and Japan, and now the former two division champion has traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to finalize his training.

RingTV.com has learned that former WBO/WBC bantamweight titleholder Nonito Donaire will climb a division to make his junior featherweight debut against THE RING’s No. 9-rated 122 pounder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Feb. 11 or Feb. 18. Las Vegas is the likely locale for the fight.

Donaire-Vazquez would be for the WBO’s junior featherweight belt that is being vacated by Jorge Arce, who dethroned Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 17 KOs) by 12th-round knockout on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in May.

Arce has dropped back down to bantamweight for a unanimous decision victory over Angky Angkotta to earn the vacant WBO belt in that division no Nov. 26.

Promoted by Top Rank Inc., Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) is coming off last month’s unanimous decision over WBO junior bantamweight beltholder Omar Narvaez, who lost every round on the cards of the three judges in their bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Donaire returned to sparring and training on Monday, according to a source close to the fighter.

RingTV.com initially reported that Donaire-Vazquez as being eyed as a pay per view main event in Las Vegas, but other reports have since indicated that Donaire could return to New York.

FILIPINO three-division champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. will most likely aim for a fourth division crown sometime in February.

A report from the World Boxing Organization has stated they are about to declare a battle for the vacant superbantamweight crown between former champion Wilfredo Vazquez. Jr. of Puerto Rico and Donaire, their newly installed no. 1 contender.

Donaire recently gave up his WBO bantamweight crown, which was claimed by Mexican Jorge Arce just last weekend by decisioning Angky Angkota of Indonesia.

Before aiming for the title vacated by Donaire, Arce was the holder of the WBO 122-lb crown, which the Mexican also gave up.

It seemed apparent that both Donaire and Arce had a deal that would give both fighters momentous achievements without fighting each other.

In winning the bantamweight belt, Arce has laid claim to being the first Mexican to win five division world titles.

Donaire, meanwhile, will be gunning for his fourth division tiara that will be four short of current Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

The 28-year-old Donaire has won crowns in the flyweight, superflyweight and bantamweight divisions.

Both Donaire and Arce are promoted by Top Rank big boss Bob Arum.

DOUBLE VENGEANCE. Revenge for both a compatriot and his father’s protégé may serve as a motivation for Donaire in facing Vazquez.

The once-beaten Vazquez crowned himself WBO superbantamweight ruler when he knocked out former WBO superflyweight champion Marvin Sonsona inside four rounds in February of last year in Puerto Rico.

When he fought Vazquez, Sonsona was also undefeated and lost his WBO 115-lb crown when he failed to make the weight in his first title defense that ended in a draw.

The 21-year-old Sonsona trained for the Vazquez bout under the guidance of Nonito Donaire, Sr.

“Back then, I took everything for granted and spent more time with my friends than inside the gym. I learned a lot from it and now I am determined to win another world crown,” said Sonsona.

October of this year, Sonsona went back to his winning ways by decisioning Mexican Carlos Jacobo in Cebu. The bookmaker also takes bets on tv exhibits like Psychic Challenge, What? According to WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, Mexico’s Jorge “Travieso” Arce (58-6-2, 45KOs) has vacated the WBO’s super bantamweight title because he plans to drop down in weight to face Angky Angkotta (25-5, 14KOs) of Indonesia for the vacant WBO 118-pound title on November 26th in Mexico. Arce wants to make history by winning a fifth title in a fifth weight division.

On the other hand, Valcarcel revealed that Top Rank has already requested for the WBO to approve a fight between Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KOs) for Arce’s vacant WBO title at 122. Donaire has vacated his WBO/WBC titles at 118 and plans to continue his career at 122.

“[Top Rank] is looking to make a fight between Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who could be held in February 2012,” Valcarcel said.

WBO Oriental super bantamweight champion Jessie “The Terminator” Albaracin blasted game challenger Marvin Tampus in an action-packed bout that fight fans enjoyed at the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.

Both fighters went toe-to-toe from the opening bell the with wicked body shots and hooks to the head with the southpaw Albaracin getting the better of the exchanges.

The champion dropped Tampus twice in the third round although one of the knockdowns called by referee Danrex Tapdasan was questionable since Tampus appeared to lose his balance after missing with a wild left hook.

In the fourth round Albaracin battered Tampus with a three-punch combination that sent the challenger through the ropes onto the ring apron where Panamanian boxing writer and fight fan Carlos Costa and ABC 5 public relations man Paul Mata were taking pictures of the action.

The end came in round five when Albaracin dropped Tampus with vicious left hook and then dropped him once more, this time with a right hook and a grazing left. Tampus was in no position to continue as referee Tapdasan counted him out at 1:56 of the round.

With the win, Albaracin improved to 15-3-3 with 13 knockouts while Tampus fell to 27-14-2 with 18 knockouts.

There was a minor controversy over 21-year-old Johnreil Casimero’s TKO win over TI Yamagata Roemart Sentillas when Sentillas’ corner claimed that Casimero, a former WBO light flyweight interim-champion, delivered a hard right after the bell had sounded.

However, a review of the AKTV IBC Channel 13 video showed that Casimero caught Sentillas as the bell sounded which was the ruling by Games and Amusement officials supervising the bout.

The moment Sentillas went down really hard GAB medical personnel rushed into the ring to help him and according to Dr. Rene Bonsubre who is also a writer for philboxing.com said Sentillas told GAB physician Dr. Jose Unabia that he did not want to continue fighting.

Casimero who improved his record to 15-2 with 9 knockouts is on the comeback trail and recently served as sparring partner of former WBO light flyweight champion Ramon “Principle” Garcia Hirales whose trainer Leo Camacho was impressed by Casimero and predicted he would become a world champion if he trains in Mexico where there are a variety of excellent sparring partners.

Garcia Hirales lost his title to Donnie “Ahas” Nietes last October 8 in Bacolod City, Philippines. Nietes had earlier relinquished his WBO minimum weight title to move up in weight and face Garcia Hirales.

Casimero who dropped a twelve round split decision to Garcia Hirales in a WBO interim light flyweight title defense on July 24, 2010 had won the interim crown with a sensational 11th round TKO of Colombia’s KO artist Cesar Canchilla (28-2, 22 KO’s) , dropping him once in round 8 and twice in round 11.

However, in his previous fight Casimero suffered a setback when he lost by a 5th round TKO top IBF flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane in South Africa on March 26 this year.

Another sparring partner of Garcia Hirales, Jason Canoy, knocked out Erwin Pulvera at 1:12 of the first round with a series of vicious hooks to the ribs. The official end came at 1:12. Canoy is another fighter that Camacho predicted had a big future and expressed interest to promoter Sammy Gello-ani of taking both Casimero and Canoy to train for one year in Mexico.
