WBO #4 cruiserweight B.J. Flores (27-1-1, 17 KO’s) says he has turned down an offer by K2 Promotions to face #1 ranked Ola Afolabi (18-2-3, 8 KOs) on March 3rd for the WBO interim world title in Germany on the Wladimir Klitschko-Jean Marc Mormeck heavyweight title card.

“I want this fight,” Flores said, “I have been very active lately and ready for this type of challenge. But on twenty-six days notice? And having to go to Germany? This is a very serious fight for a very serious title and I demand my full 45 days of preparation, especially considering I just fought last Saturday. It’s only fair. I have worked very hard for this opportunity and combine that with a very very low $25,000 offer, it doesn’t seem like they really want this fight.”

He continued, “This is a great chance for the cruiserweight division to put on a great fight and they want to stick it on an undercard where no one will see it, for very low money with only 26 days’ notice and I would have to travel to Germany. I have just had three successful shows in Springfield, Missouri and with the cash streams we can generate, we could do the fight there and bring in a network TV station and both of us can not only make more money but it could re-energize the cruiserweight division in the States. This fight deserves to be on TV and I deserve the regulated 45 day preparation time as I am the highest rated contender. Ola, I will pay you more money than you have offered me and we can definitely get American TV to cover this event. I demand the proper amount of time and I want everyone in America to see this fight as it is good for the division. Fighting on the undercard in Germany is with 25 days notice is not the right way to win a world title Have your promoter get in touch with Don King and we can set this up easy. I want this fight!”

World Boxing Organization (WBO) world light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly expects the Welsh and British boxing fans to be at their very best when he makes his long awaited homecoming on February 25th.

Cleverly will face American Tommy Karpency in the 3rd defence of his world title as he headlines the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. He’ll be fighting in front of his own Welsh fans for the first time in 4 years and there are just a few hundred tickets left before the show sells out.

“The atmosphere is going to be awesome on the night. It’s going to be a sold out arena and such a good atmosphere. It’s going to give me a great buzz and there’s a good buzz around the fight. I’m excited to come out to an atmosphere like this, it’s going to be electric”, Cleverly commented.

Despite it being the first time that Cleverly will have headlined a show in his homeland, he’s aware that he mustn’t fall for the pitfalls of fighting at home.

“It would be very easy to get carried away once I hear the atmosphere. It would be easy to slip off my plan and go all guns blazing. But I know I can deal with the occasion and the pressure and I’m looking forward to going out and enjoying myself.” said Cleverly.

In the opposition corner will be Karpency and Cleverly is sure that he’ll have not seen any crowd like it before.

He said, “When Karpency hears the atmosphere from the crowd and then he has to deal with me putting it on him in the ring when the first bell goes then he knows he’s in the deep and it’s going to be a very difficult night for Karpency all round.”

Nathan Cleverly is hoping to help “bring the glory days back to Wales” when he takes on the “dangerous” Tommy Karpency at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on February 25.

The WBO light-heavyweight champion is busy preparing for his title defence, which will be his first fight in Wales since 2007, and is looking forward to having the eyes of the sporting world on Cardiff and Wales that weekend.

Hours before his clash with American Karpency, Wales collide with England at Twickenham, while Cardiff meet Liverpool in the Carling Cup final on Sunday at Wembley.

“It’s a great weekend of sport and it’s great to be involved,” the 24-year-old told the Daily Mail. “I can see why there could be potential pressure on me but I’m just enjoying the occasion, which I think will enhance my performance.

“It’s a big deal for myself, and for Welsh boxing; hopefully we can bring the glory days back to Wales. To come home as world champion is a special occasion.

“Training is going well, everything is on track. It’s just a case of focusing for the last three weeks.”

Many are tipping Cleverly to make light work of his opponent, but Karpency has never been stopped in 24 fights.

“He is tough,” said Cleverly. “He has operated at cruiserweight so he’s a strong fighter. He’s got not nothing to lose and there’s no pressure on him, so he’s potentially dangerous. He’s a trained fighter so he’s capable of causing an upset just like anyone else.”

Should Cleverly manage to safely negotiate his way past the challenge in front of him, bigger fights await the Welshman.

“After this fight we’ll be looking to get straight on the case and have a unification fight in the summer. Bernard Hopkins is regarded as No. 1 in the division and I know he’s got a big fight with Chad Dawson coming up. These guys are the ones you target to become the best you can.”

Everything is falling into place for WBO Intercontinental flyweight champion Milan “El Metodico” Melindo of the ALA Boxing stable. Last weekend, Melindo raised his record to a spotless 25-0 with his tenth knockout, this one over an unpredictable Juan Esquer. This lines Melindo up for a world title shot.

“The title fight will come, God will grant me that eventually,” Melindo said. “We will just follow the plan and have one or two more fights before we think about that.”

Melindo seems to have really found his identity as a boxer. He moved up in weight in 2010, and stuck to his technical, deliberate style with great success. He even changed his monicker from “Milenyo” to “El Metodico” or “Method Man” to fit. After all, he didn’t fight like a storm, and didn’t want to grab the name of a typhoon that devastated a great part of the country.

Meanwhile, though Esquer has had an up and down career the last few years, he did not come with a flimsy resume. In fact, “Panterita” or little panther has fought six opponents who would become world champions, beating future WBO minimumweight champion Kermin Guardia and drawing with eventual WBC light flyweight king Gilberto Keb Baas. He also said he didn’t care whose territory he was fighting in, he was there to knock Melindo out.

Even before the fight, you could see the contrast between the two. Melindo was reserved, just loosely moving about in his corner, while Esquer, clearly nervous, was bouncing around the ring as if he had just had a gallon of coffee. Fans did not expect a quick knockout because that was not Melindo’s style. But nobody expected the bizarre ending, either.

Melindo started off at his normal pace, bringing the fight to the Mexican, using his left jab to great effect, repeatedly forcing the Mexican back. The jittery challenger was throwing a messy variety of punches mostly off the mark. Some time in the second round, Esquer started complaining of low blows from Melindo, even ones that barely grazed his hip. Melindo was throwing an impressive mix of hooks and uppercuts with machine-like precision that clearly bothered his opponent.

A couple of round later, Melindo threw a body shot that went barely south of Esquer’s beltline. The punch was not even a real power shot. Ater a split second, Esquer decides to crumple to the canvas as if he had been castrated. He squirmed, grimaced, frowned, howled, squealed, and put on a really big show. Even his cornermen were laughing. Referee Danrex Tapdasan gave him time to recover, and sent Melindo to a neutral corner with a second warning.

Esquer pretended to stand thrice, then slumped back to the canvas squirming in faked pain. After more than three minutes, he got up, shaking his head as if still hurting, and the fight continued.

“He was trying to do something because I could feel he was getting tired,” Melindo told this writer in the vernacular after the fight. “It was a matter of time before I would beat him.”

The crowd at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu was howling, booing, yelling invectives at the challenger. When the fight continued, Esquer tried to show that the champion’s blows weren’t bothering him. Then at close quarters in the seventh round, it was Esquer that threw a clear low blow. Melindo complained, but since the referee hadn’t stepped in, kept fighting. The Filipino hit Esquer in the chest, and Esquer went down, writhing in pain and claiming it was a low blow. His own chief second asked Tapdasan to stop the fight. Esquer quickly left the ring to a mix of boos and jeers.

“My focus was really to follow the plan, look foropenings,” admitted Melindo. “I tried not to mind his antics, but stay focused on doing my job.”

Melindo’s humility, focus and patience are also born of lessons learned, like the time his stablemate AJ Banal, then 19, stepped into the ring against Rafael Concepcion in 2008 for the interim WBA world super flyweight title. At the time Banal, now WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight king, had overtrained, and ran out of gas by the eighth round. He was knocked out in the tenth. It is still Banal’s only defeat to date.

Milan Melindo is biding his time. Whether it’s against WBO flyweight champion and countryman Brian Viloria or someone else, he knows he will be ready. He wants to get there and stay there for a very long time.

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Nonito Donaire made quite the scene on Friday afternoon when the two prizefighters came face to face, jawing at one another, during the final press conference to promote their bout this Saturday night.

Donaire and Vazquez face off on HBO for the vacant WBO junior featherweight belt inside of the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and the fight has seen a little spice added to it over the past few days because of a war of words that broke out between both sides on their personal Twitter accounts.

The drama displayed today underlines how much tension will be in the air come fight night when these two meet and there is pure confidence coming from both sides.

I caught up with Vazquez moments after the presser had ended and tried to get a feeling where his mind is at with such a pivotal clash just a few days away.

“It’s probably the most important fight of my career,” Vazquez would tell me through his co-promoter Felix ‘Tutico’ Zabala of All Star Boxing. “With this fight I will be in a position a lot higher than what I think. And I prepared myself with confidence to do it.”

Vazquez was a hot commodity coming into 2011 but saw his stock fall after an upset loss to Jorge Arce in May that saw him storm out to an early lead after scoring a 4th round knockdown but eventually wilt under the Sinaloa fighter’s pressure. Bludgeoned along the ropes in the twelfth rounds, Vazquez saw the fight waived off by referee Joe Cortez. He concedes that it was the Arce performance that lead many to doubt him.

“Absolutely, yes,” Vazquez agreed. “That was a learning experience for me. I proved to myself that I can do a better job and this is my opportunity to prove it.”

And while not giving away any of his secrets that come along with his bold prediction of a knockout over the once-beaten Donaire, all Vazquez could do was stress that he will be ready when the moment presents itself.

“I’m going to win no matter how. I’m going to do my job round by round. When I have him ready, something will happen,” Vazquez stated.

San Antonio, Texas — “THE HEAT IS ON” —  (L-R) Superstar three-time world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez,Jr. have an intense heated exchange during the posedown at the press conference at the Alamodome in San Antonio,Texas, Thursday for their upcoming WBO Jr. Featherweight title fight, Saturday,Feb. 4, televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing from the Alamodome in San Antonio,Texas. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and president Todd DuBeof are scheduled to meet with Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz and Cameron Dunkin, manager of undefeated WBA Junior Welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley here in San Antonio, Thursday to hopefully finalize details of a June 9 title fight between WBO welterweight champion and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and Bradley.

In an interview with BoxingScene.com, Manila Standard and Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN, Arum said “we will sit down and try to thresh everything out and then Manny will be contacted in the Philippines and hopefully we will be able to make an announcement on Tuesday which is two days after the Super Bowl.”

The 28 year old Bradley has a record of 28-0 with 12 knockouts and will be coming off an 8th round TKO over former world champion Joel Casamayor last November 12, 2011.

Bradley won the WBC title with a 12 round split decision over Junior Witter on May 10, 2008 and added the WBO title with a 12 round decision over Kendall Holt on April 4, 2009. One of his more impressive wins was against newly crowned WBA/IBF champion Lamont Peterson on December 12, 2009 before Peterson won a controversial decision over Amir Khan. Bradley dropped Peterson in the third round en route to a comfortable decision.

Bradley’s manager Dunkin who also handles Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire told us he expects the Pacquiao-Bradley fight to push through even as Floyd Mayweather Jr announced he would fight 154 pound champ Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather made the announcement after the Nevada State Athletic Commission issued the fighter a conditional, one-fight license warning him he had to go to prison to begin serving a 90 day sentence on June 1 and had to stay out of trouble.

Arum said the Mayweather situation “is really bizarre, its really sad because its making a circus of boxing. Its obvious to anybody who has looked at this, that the fight isn’t happening because of Mayweather. For two years one thing was in stone — that was a 50-50 deal and now Mayweather has departed from it and thats ridiculous. Hopefully when our fight is set in June, his fight is now set for May, we will sit down sensibly without a lot of pressure and plan a fight if both (Pacquiao and Mayweather) are successful for November, hopefully.”

However, Arum cautioned “with these birds there is  no rational kind of thing. I know what Mayweather is up to. He’s trying to get some investor to put up a tremendous amount of money, pay Manny a fraction of that and keep the rest to himself. But I’ve been in this game too long to let that happen.”

Responding to Mayweather’s offer of $40 million to Pacquiao while he retains all the ay-per-view and other ancillary income Arum made a counter-offer of a guaranteed $50 million and said “its a no brainer. I’d give him $50 million in two seconds because each of these guys (Pacquiao and Mayweather) is going to make a lot more than $50 million once we get the fight on. I believe the fight will do about 3 million pay-per-view homes in the United States and Canada and the gate is going to be tremendous.”

The Top Rank promoter also revealed that he and DuBeof had spoken to the MGM people who told him that they want to do an outdoor stadium where the Mandalay Bay Convention Center is. Arum noted “there is plenty of room to put the outdoor stadium up and you use that tremendously large convention center for a boxing experience so that people can come and see the old boxing memorabilia, films and everything. Its great for boxing and the press will have great accommodations and its all working but nobody is going to spend the money to put up an outdoor stadium unless they know there is going to be a fight.”

The Klitschko brothers, who are taking part in their first joint training camp in several years, took several promotional photos to show their dominance over the heavyweight division. The joint training camp is taking place in Austria. The two brothers have scheduled defenses only two weeks apart in Germany.

WBO/WBA/IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko defends his titles on March 3rd against Jean Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22KOs) at ESPIRIT Arena in Dusseldorf. Two weeks earlier, on February 18th, Vitali Klitschko (43-2, 40KOs) defends the WBC title against Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9KOs) at Olympiahalle in Munich.

Omar “The Hurricane” Narvaez (35-1-2, 19KOs) will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight title for the third time on March 31 against an opponent to be confirmed. The fight is likely going to happen at Luna Park in Buenos Aires or Trelew in Argentina. Last October in New York City, Narvaez moved up to the bantamweight division and suffered his first loss, by decision, to Nonito Donaire. Narvaez felt the weight was too heavy and he returned to the super flyweight division. Donaire moved up to super bantamweight.

A word war that erupted between the camps of Nonito Donaire Jr. and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. could just be a prelude to a seething slugfest in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title fight this Saturday (Sunday, Manila time) at the Alamodome in Texas.

Apparently, one daring message on twitter courtesy of Vazquez’s wife had the `Filipino Flash’ annoyingly responding back, but in a manner epitomizing him as a former two-time world champion.

In his account, Donaire, 29, twitted, “Ok, didn’t know Vazquez’s wife talks crap, when WV2 (Wilfredo Vazquez Jr) doesn’t.”

The Filipino boxing star is obviously reacting to an earlier twit made by Jacklyn Roman, wife of Vazquez Jr., who told Donaire, `Your scared! See you there!

Although obviously irritated, Donaire said he’d rather not be dragged in a heated exchange of words, and instead, will just look forward at meeting the Puerto Rican namesake and son of former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez, this weekend in San Antonio.

“My wife and I have had nothing but respect for WV2, but if you all wanna talk crap, go ahead. I’m not like that,” Donaire said.

Vazquez’s wife allegedly only reacted on an earlier twit reportedly posted by Rachel Donaire, Nonito’s wife. But the Filipino couple denied having ever talked about or better yet, badmouthed Vazquez in social networking sites.

“Ok, like I said bro, I respected you and your dad. I don’t know why it turned to trash talking. But either way, I look forward to fighting someone like you,” added Donaire, the former flyweight and bantamweight champion of the world.

The exchange of twits further pumped up Donaire for the 12-round bout that co-headlines the World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight championship match between undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Marco Antonio Rubio.

Unlike his previous title fights, Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) admitted he has no problem making the 122-lbs. weight limit this time.

The California-based Filipino even had the benefit of taking dinner now as he did for two straight days at Joe’s Crab Shack.

“It feels good to eat everything and anything,” said Donaire, who arrived in the heart of Texas a day ahead of Vazquez.

After working out at the ChampionFit gym Tuesday, Donaire declared himself in the `best shape’ of his career.

“I feel so strong. I’m untouchable,” he told ABS-CBN reporter Dyan Castillejo later on.

Donaire has not lost in the last 10 years, a stretch that saw him on a 25-fight win streak, including a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision against Omar Andres Narvaez in his last bout four months ago at the Madison Square Garden in New York to successfully retain his WBO and WBC bantamweight titles.

In contrast, Vazquez (21-1, 18 KOs), suffered his first career loss just a year ago, a 12-round technical knockout against tough Mexican Jorge Arce to yield his WBO super-bantamweight crown.

But he’s coming off a third-round demolition of Roberto Carlos Leyva also last October.

San Antonio, Texas.

“Yo me he mantenido al margen y he sido respetuoso.

As BoxingScene.com had reported a few days ago – for the first time in many years, the Klitschko brothers have come together for a joint training camp in Austria.

Two weeks earlier, on February 18th, Vitali Klitshko (43-2, 40KOs) defends the WBC title against Dereck Chisora (15-2, 9KOs) at Olympiahalle in Munich.

We get a short glimpse at the closest the Klitschko brothers will ever get to fighting each other, as the two brothers stepped in the ring and worked with each other for movement and defense. The two brothers have not sparred with each other in many years and this is the first time, in a long time, where both of them stepped in the ring with each other for a training session. The two brothers were very focused and displayed quick moves as they gave each other advice to avoid incoming shots.

According to Top Rank’s CEO, Bob Arum, the next opponent for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao could be revealed as early as next Tuesday. Pacquiao’s return is scheduled to take place on June 9th, likely at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. While Arum refused to fully confirm the opponent, it appears Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12KOs) is going to secure the lucrative opportunity.

There were four names on Pacquiao’s list of potential opponents – Juan Manuel Marquez, Lamont Peterson, Timothy Bradley and Miguel Cotto. The first choice, by Pacquiao and Arum, was Cotto. But, the Puerto Rican star is now three fights forward as a full fledged junior middleweight and refuses to fight Pacquiao at 147. Arum is attempting to match Marquez and Peterson against each other  – which only leaves Bradley.

“We wanted Cotto, but he said that he can’t make 147. If the other two guys are fighting each other and Cotto can’t make the weight, then it only leaves one guy, but lets see what happens,” Arum told BoxingScene.com.

“We won’t announce anything until after the Super Bowl. I don’t want to take anything away from the Chavez fight [on Saturday]. We want to wait until after the Chavez fight, and after the Super Bowl [to make the announcement]….probably Tuesday.”

However, Arum believes anything can happen between now and next week.

“What if Cotto has an epiphany and suddenly calls and says he can make 147?,” Arum noted.

“Here at King’s Gym, it’s a good atmosphere,” said Perez, who is walking around at 138 pounds for the moment.  “It’s where champions are made, and come February 25th, I’m going to be prepared.”

Trainer Max Garcia and his son, Sam, worked Perez’ corner while CSNBayArea.com’s 2011 Northern California Trainer of the Year Virgil Hunter counseled junior welterweight Mike Dallas Jr. and lightweight Stan Martyniouk, who did five rounds apiece with Perez.

Dallas, a boxer-puncher, and Martyniouk, who is more of a stylist, are both taller than the 5’6’’ Perez (23-0-2, 6 KOs), which is a similar situation he will face against Cincinnati’s Broner (22-0, 18 KOs), who has an inch on him.

Over the course of the 10 rounds, the order of the day for “The Prince” was the left hand, as the orthodox Perez displayed a strong jab as well as a very accurate counter hook that he employed in the pocket.

“We’re doing a little more boxing,” said the elder Garcia.  “The last few fights, he was having to go in there, and guys came in to fight, so he was happy to go in there and go at it.

“But now we’re using a little more movement, a little more feints, a little more angles, [and] making [our opponent] reach.  It’s that old Familton Boxing,” Garcia added, referring to the late Don Familton, Perez’ former trainer.

Perez, who traveled north from his usual home of Salinas to the Bay Area to hold camp, addressed his war of words with Broner, who has continued to direct disparaging remarks toward his foe.

“I’ve seen [Perez] in the press conference,” Broner told BoxingScene’s Jake Donovan on Friday. “He had a lot of fat under the chin.”

“It doesn’t bother me,” Perez responded.  “I saw the pictures on the press conference. I did look kind of fluffy, but I’m not fluffy. I’m always in shape. I’m always ready. But he’s a world champ.  I can’t underestimate him.  He’s done his job, and he’s done the dream, and now it’s my time to shine and take it from him.”

Broner-Perez is the co-feature to Devon Alexander’s welterweight scrap with Marcos Maidana, which will be televised on HBO and all take place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

WBO Intercontinental flyweight champion Milan “El Metodico” Melindo of the famed ALA Gym pulverized Mexico’s rugged Juan Esquer to win by a 7th round TKO before a huge crowd at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.

Fight fans learned that boxing was more fun in the Philippines when they were treated to a ridiculous acting job by Esquer who got hit with a left that was on the lower end of his high-rise trunks in the dying seconds of the sixth round, went down, crawled all over the canvas in a show of agony, got up and fell down more than once as the crowd booed the Mexican who has a history of such antics in the ring, lustily.

Given a mandatory five minute break to recover, the Mexican came charging back in the final seconds of the round much to the delight of the fans and belying the pretense that he was badly hurt.

Early in round seven Esquer caught Melindo with a clear low blow that appeared to be intentional and then when he realized it was a lost cause and Melindo caught him with a left to the chest, he feigned a low blow before his corner decided to call it quits and referee Danrex Tapdasan ended the contest at 2:16 of the 7th round.

It was as classic a display of skill as the technically sound Melindo used his hand-speed, rapier-like jab and cracking double left hooks to the head and body alongside flurries of accurate punches to wear down the tough Mexican and retain his title.

The impressive win set Melindo who is ranked No.1 by the WBO on a collision course against countryman Brian Viloria unless ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer is able to get Melindo a title shot against any of the champions from the other world organizations such as WBC champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, WBA champion Hernan Marquez and IBF champion Moruti Mthalane.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that for Melindo to earn a mandatory crack at Viloria’s title he would have to fight a top-ten ranked fighter in his next bout which is what WBO president “Paco” Valcarcel told him at the last WBO convention in Puerto Rico. He also disclosed that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum had asked him about Melindo after we mentioned his name to Arum and Manny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz and they are exploring the possibility of Melindo seeing action against a top ten contender on the undercard of Pacquiao’s scheduled June 9 fight in Las Vegas.

Aldeguer said “you can’t hide from fighting Viloria if that’s what has to happen. It would be unfair to Melindo and to fight fans.” He cited the example of Mexico pointing out that Mexicans fight against each other for regional and world titles. That’s the nature of boxing.

Aldeguer also plans to send Melindo along with AJ “Bazooka” Banal to train under Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire’s accomplished trainer Robert Garcia in preparation for his US debut.

The 23 year old Melindo improved his unbeaten record to 26-0 with 10 knockouts while Esquer dropped to 27-10-2 with 21 knockouts.

Melindo set the tone of the fight in the opening round when he caught Esquer with double left hooks and ended the round with a solid right hook. Another left hook in round two stunned Esquer and a cracking right uppercut ended another excellent round for Melindo.

In an action-packed third round Melindo marked by some furious exchanges Esquer connected with a low blow which referee Tapdasan apparently didn’t see. Melindo was warned for a low blow in round four while Esquer kept shaking his head after getting caught by Melindo’s combinations as though to say the punches didn’t hurt.

Melindo was called for another low blow in round five although referee Tapdasan didn’t deduct a point despite his previous warnings. Esquer connected with three straight jabs even as he continued to complain about imaginary low blows and went into a series of highly exaggerated acts while rolling on the canvas .

Melindo suffered a small cut on his right eyebrow following a head-butt before Melindo drove Esquer to the ropes and decided to forget the body shots which were called low and instead went to the head with vicious flurries that rocked the Mexican.

After connecting with an obvious low blow and receiving a left to the chest, Esquer claimed he was hit by a low blow prompting his corner men to step into the ring forcing referee Tapdasan to call a halt.

In fact it was Esquer who was disqualified in the 7th round for repeated low blows in his last bout against Ricardo Nunez for the Latino flyweight title. In a post fight interview with TV commentator Bill Velasco of ABS-CBN which telecast “Pinoy Pride XI” on Channel 2, said “He knew he was going to lose. His body was weak and I would knock him out.”

WBO #1 flyweight Milan “El Metodico” Melindo of the Philippines kept his Intercontinental crown via a 7th round TKO over a game but outclassed Mexican Juan “Panterita” Esquer Saturday night at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu. Melindo, 23, peppered Esquer with stiff jabs, uppercuts and punishing 4 to 5-punch combinations, all in precision manner. In round five Esquer got floored with a low blow that saw the Mexican wince in pain and rolled around the ring. Esquer tried to stand up at least six times but fell each time. After a few minutes Esquer continued fighting and survived the round.

In the 7th canto Esquer trapped Melindo in the neutral corner but threw a clear low blow. Referee Danrex Tapdasan came in for a momentary halt but Esquer surprisingly fell down and claimed he was hit by a low blow. Replays through a wide screen inside the venue however showed Esquer not being hit by any punch. Tapdasan waived off the fight after Esquer refused to stand up. Official time was 2:16.

With the win Melindo improves to 26-0 with 10 knockouts while Esquer drops to 27-10-2 with 21 KO’s.

Lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez is waiting for a contract that guarantees him a fourth meeting with Manny Pacquiao. Discussions are ongoing for Marquez to take a fight in March or April, possibly in Cowboys Stadium against WBA/IBF 140-pound champion Lamont Peterson. WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao is going to return on June 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with WBO 140-pound champion Timothy Bradley in the other corner.

Before Marquez commits to any move, he wants a contract agreement that guarantees him a November fight with Pacquiao [or the winner of Pacquiao’s June fight].

“Before I accept an agreement, it must include a fight against Pacquiao. Otherwise I will not sign it. I will not serve as a stepping stone for others,” Marquez said.

Juan Manuel had started training last week, but a minor bout with the flu put an end to his training. He plans to return to camp next week.

“Next week I’ll return to the gym and see what they say. Fortunately for me, I’m a free agent and I have no commitments to anyone,” Marquez said.
