WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20KOs) plans to impress when he faces dangerous challenger Ismayl Sillakh (21-1, 17KOs) at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada. Kovalev makes the first defense of the title he captured in August from Nathan Cleverly. He wants to make a statement against Sillakh, and then hopes to secure unification bouts against the likes of IBF champion Bernard Hopkins, WBA champion Beibut Shumenov and WBC champion Adonis Stevenson.

“This is very important for me to get a win and get a great win. I want to show the people a very good fight, the people who will spend money on tickets and the people who will be watching on TV, I want to give them a good fight,” Kovalev told BoxingScene.com

“This division is more interesting. Hopkins, at 48-years-old, he just got a win over Murat. That would be an amazing fight. I like this fight. Beibut Shumenov, for a long time I haven’t seen him in the ring and I’m wondering when he will get in the ring to show what he can do. And then there is Stevenson. Right now Stevenson is very popular. A lot of people want this fight [between me and him] and I want this fight and I hope it can happen in the future.”

World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight champion, Roman “Rocky” Martinez ended today his training camp in Puerto Rico weighing 132 3/4 pounds one week before his third title defense against the former WBO featherweight champion Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia on November 9 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, in a Top Rank presentation to be broadcasted on HBO.

Martinez (27-1-2, 16 KOs), who is going to defend his 130 pounds title for the third time against Garcia (32-0, 27 KOs), worked today for the Puerto Rican media at the Dorado Municipal Gym in Dorado with his trainers Raul “Papo” Torres and Freddy Trinidad. The Vega Baja native did some rounds of pads with Trinidad, then he worked with the punching bag and jumping the rope.

“I’m good at this weight and very happy with the training camp for this fight against Mikey Garcia”, Martinez said after the workout when he step up to the scale and weighed in 132 3/4 pounds. “We have worked hard for this fight and I feel so good and in great shape, just waiting for the day of the fight.”

Martinez, who come off a win over Diego Magdaleno on April in China, will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, this Monday, November 4, in the morning for his final days of training there.

vic_darchinyan_shoot_680

By Ronnie Nathanielsz –

Former three division world champion Vic Darchinyan is seeking to avenge his stunning 5th round knockout by four division champion and  2012 “Fighter of the Year” Nonito “The Filipino Flash” on July 7, 2007 when they face off in a rematch at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 10, Manila Time.

Darchinyan’s manager Frank Espinoza told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard  that Darchinyan was “doing very well in training” and works out at the Glendale Boxing Gym in California.

He said since the fight will be a ten round, featherweight bout Darchinyan has no problems making the weight. It will be the first 126 pound fight for both Donaire and Darchinyan.

Espinoza told the Standard that Darchinyan “is getting ready and is looking for redemption. He has waited six years for this fight and wants to take advantage of the chance to avenge the loss of his IBF and IBO flyweight belts to Donaire.”

The manager said Darchinyan has been sparring with former two-time Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez who has a record of six knockouts in six wins as a pro and became the first Mexican Youth World Champion.

Espinoza reported that another sparring mate of Darchinyan is undefeated Australian IBO super  featherweight champion Will Tomlinson who has a record of  21-0-1 with 12 knockouts..

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told us last Monday before his return to the US after checking on Manny Pacquiao’s training for the showdown with Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios in Macau on November 24 noted that Donaire will have a tough fight on his hands against Drachinyan “who really launched Donaire’s career” when he lost in July 2007.

Arum described his Corpus Christi event as “a great card” with former WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia who he said “is a sensational fighter” going up against Ramon “Rocky” Martinez for the Puerto Rican’s junior lightweight title in the main event which Arum indicated “should be a terrific fight”  and Vanes Martirosyan fighting for the vacant  junior middleweight title against Demetrius  Andrade with undefeated Jamaican Nicholas Walters (22-0, 18 KO’s) taking on Alberto Garza (25—5-1, 20 KO’s)  of Mexico for the WBO featherweight title.

Meantime, Donaire who has been working out at trainer Robert Garcia’s gym in Oxnard has had his father, Nonito “Dodong” Donaire Sr also helping in preparing Nonito for his first fight as a featherweight and by all indications Donaire Sr has been a welcome addition to the training camp.

Arum said that during a meeting with ABS-CBN’S Gabby Lopez and Peter Musgni  he was told that the giant broadcast network “is going to take all four fights.”

RICKY BURNS has been granted his wish of a second world title battle with big-hitting Mexican Raymundo Beltran.

The WBO lightweight champion will meet Beltran for a second time in five months with his belt up for grabs in Glasgow early in February.

On September 7, the Scot had his jaw broken in the second round of their first meeting and was decked in the eighth on his way to a hotly-disputed and fortunate draw against the challenger in what was, nonetheless, one of the most courageous performances ever witnessed in a Scottish ring.

But, to his credit, and despite having had a titanium plate inserted in his jaw and offered a big-money match up in Madison Square Garden with US star Terence Crawford, Burns has remained true to his word Beltran would get a re-match.

Now the champ’s manager Alex Morrison has confirmed: “Eddie Hearn has reached an agreement with Beltran’s people for a rematch in Glasgow in February next year.

“Ricky made it clear from the moment the first fight between the two was over that he felt he owed Beltran a second chance and that speaks volumes for the type of man he is.

“After suffering the type of injury he did, many a fighter would be loath to go back in the ring, never mind face the same opponent again who had inflicted these injuries.

“But Ricky is the most honest man you will ever meet and he knows he must set the record straight in the second fight.

“Obviously, we had other options, but for Ricky the honourable thing to do was to give Beltran a second chance.

“He may have that, but I think this time Beltran will find out just how good Ricky is at his best.”

There are urgent areas of improvement required in his performance if he is not to be found impaled on Beltran’s left hook once more.

The champion’s professional career spans back to the night of his pro debut at the Kelvin Hall on October 20, 2001, against journeyman Woody Greenway on the undercard of Olympic champion Audley Harrison.

Since then, two kinks have remained in the Burns armour and that has been his tendency to remain rigidly upright with his jaw out and his failure to bring his right hand back to cover it after he has thrown a punch.

A brutally-honest big Alex admitted Burns will have to do better to prevail next time.

He said: “Ricky made mistakes in the first fight and learned some very painful lessons.

“But, come February, I have every confidence he will put a performance together which proves that point and puts Beltran to bed once and for all.”

Highly motivated and with the confidence of what he defines as the best preparation of his career, Argentinean and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Latino junior middleweight champion, former world title challenger Javier “La Bestia” Maciel, had his first face to face with Englishman Brian “The Lion” Rose, before their highly anticipated WBO junior middleweight world title final eliminator, that will take place on Saturday, October 26th., at the Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England, televised live by TyC Sports in Argentina and lots of parts of America, Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, and AWEtv and AWEtv.com (3 p.m. ET).

JavierMaciel-BrianRose-ConfMR1

In a packed jammed press conference on Thursday afternoon, with his motivation high as ever after finishing his intense training camp in Las Vegas where he stayed for three weeks, Maciel (27-2, 20 KOs), ranked WBO junior middleweight #5, and International Boxing Federation (IBF) #7, expressed his confidence for his fight against Rose (24-1-1, 7 KOs), current WBO intercontinental junior middleweight champion, ranked WBO junior middleweight #4 and World Boxing Council (WBC) #16, who also said his words. Highly optimistic, both of them made clear what they are here for: get the victory that will put them on the #1 spot of the ranking and become mandatory challenger of the vacant title that will dispute Armenian-born American Vanes Martirosyan and American Demetrius Andrade on November 9th. But for that, “The Beast” and “The Lion” have to take a big step before.

JavierMaciel-BrianRose-ConfMR2

“I am very pleased to be here, for such an important fight like this eliminator. I came a long away from Argentina, to get everything. I come very well prepared, in a wonderful condition and in the best moment of my career. He is a good boxer, but I see myself stronger than him, and I’m ready”, said Maciel, who arrived from Las Vegas together with known trainer Miguel Diaz, and joined the rest of his team, headed by his manager and promoter, Mario Margossian, head of Argentina Boxing Promotions, his trainer Eduardo Molina, his assistant Gustavo Garay Rezola, his doctor Alberto Centanaro, his physiotherapist Cacho Latrónico, and Club Atletico Velez Sarsfield’s bursar Daniel Ramundo.

“I made the best preparation ever, the best in my life. The workouts in Las Vegas were very demanding, and I had first level sparrings, so I am in an excellent shape. We have watched several of Rose’s fights and studied him.  He comes forward, solidly, he looks for the fight, always with a high and closed guard, in a compact way, which makes it difficult to connect him. I go forward as well, so it will be a nice fight. And it doesn’t matter he is fighting at home, I am ready to beat him”, added the 29-year-old Maciel, who after making the distance against WBO middleweight world champion Dmitry Pirog in Russia, on March 2011, went down to the 154 pounds -his real division- where he finished eight of his last nine victims in less than five rounds.

Without being any less, Rose took the microphone and said his words. “This is a massive fight. As I said before, it’s a 50-50 fight on paper. It’s going to be a great fight, that anyone can win, but I feel more than capable of winning”, said the 28-year-old Blackpool favorite, who was with his whole team, headed the Eddie Hearn, head of Matchroom Boxing, promoter of the event.

“I have watched him, and I think technically I’m a lot better. It’s just about putting that on practice on Saturday night. All the hard work is done. I’m not going to hold anything back, and I’m going to show to everyone on Saturday and prove that I belong on this stage”, stated Rose, who has knocked out former world champions such as Vivian Harris and Joachim Alcine.

But Maciel, who was named Latino Boxer of the Year by the WBO, and comes to this challenge after stopping in five rounds his countryman Alejandro Falliga, to defend his Latino belt for the fifth time on September 7th. at the Luna Park Stadium in Buenos Aires, has clear what he has to do.

“I am going to go wisely to look for the fight from the beginning. I want to fight for the world title so I’m going to go out there to win on Saturday night, and take the victory to Argentina. I feel great and I can’t wait for the fight to come. I am going to win the fight”, he concluded.

Maciel and Rose clash on a massive boxing night in Sheffield. In the other main event, undefeated hometown favorite Kell Brook (30-0, 22 KOs) will face former Ukrainian world champion Vyacheslav Senchenko (34-1, 23 KOs), in an IBF welterweight world title eliminator.

Servania.Concepcion.SupBantam.combine

By Ronnie Nathanielsz –

Revenge is on the mind of undefeated WBO “Best Boxer of the Year” and the reigning WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight champion Genesis “Azukal” Servania when he faces Panama’s former WBA super flyweight interim champion Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion for the WBO Intercontinental title at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu on Saturday.

The “Pinoy Pride XXII” card staged by the famed ALA Promotions in partnership with the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN will be telecast on The Filipino Channel with a delayed telecast at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday over Channel 2.

The bad blood between the cocky Concepcion who scored a stunning 10th round knockout over fancied  AJ “Bazooka”  Banal on July 26, 2008 and has vowed to give Servania an even more humiliating defeat resulted in a fierce exchange of words during a post weigh-in stare-down at the Ayala Activity  Center Friday,  forcing GAB official Celso  Miranda to step in and separate the two fighters.

Concepcion annoyed Servania when he offered him a blue pillow taunting the Filipino prospect by claiming he would put him to sleep early.

Servania promised to make Concepcion eat his words and adding, “I trained hard for this fight and will make him eat his words.”

Taking a cue from Concpcion, Mexico’s Edgar “Chololo” Martinez said he would shock the world and upset undefeated “King” Arthur Villanueva in their WBO International super flyweight title fight.

Boasting that Mexicans are the best fighters in the world, Martinez asked Villanueva to take a look t his fists because it would be the last thing he would see.

Villanueva reacted calmly and indicated he will let his fists do the talking in the ring. Rated by all four major world boxing organizations, Villanueva is hoping that an impressive showing against Martinez will help line him up for a wold title shot.

Boxing’s loquacious elder statesman Bernard Hopkins may be headlining Saturday night’s Showtime card at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City against Karo Murat, but it’s the young man in the co-main event, WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin who described life at the top of the boxing world better than even “The Executioner” could.

“I had to learn how to deal with it,” said ‘Kid Chocolate’ when asked if he was comfortable being the fighter now with a target on his back placed there by his fellow 160-pounders. “Even my friends will want to fight me because I have the belt, and I have to respect that and learn what being a champion is all about. So I don’t look at it as being comfortable; I don’t think life as a fighter can be comfortable because I’m on the borderline of sanity and insanity doing what I’m doing. It’s like a big mental game that I’m playing with myself, and that’s what boxing is all about. I fight through so much BS to live through good moments of my life, like being a winner, inspiring kids, and showing somebody that they can be what they want to be. So I can never be comfortable. And especially coming from where I come from, I could never be comfortable. I always wanted more; I was always working towards being a better person.”

Despite being less than comfortable at the top, it’s evident that he has made it, both in boxing and in life, though neither seems to be letting up in throwing curveballs at him. The ones in the ring are easy enough for him to deal with, considering that he only has to face one man with two fists in sanctioned combat every few months. The ones outside the ring, they’re always tougher to deal with simply because you never see them coming.

Heading into Saturday’s bout with Gabriel Rosado, Quillin is still heavy-hearted after his wife suffered a miscarriage of their child earlier this month, but he’s put on a brave face and made it clear that this won’t affect his performance on fight night. Granted, it’s not easy to deal with, but if anyone can persevere, it’s the New Yorker who was once homeless as he looked to make his fistic dreams become a reality.

Today, he’s got a world title belt in his possession and a bright future in a hot division. But the road to get better doesn’t end, something you don’t have to tell him twice.

“I’m just glad to be positive and learn about myself and inspire people,” said the 30-year-old. “It’s been a road to remember. I would have never thought I’d be where I’m at right now. I’m just glad that I can be evidence of what hard work can get you.”

Want more evidence? Less than a month after Saturday’s fight, Quillin will be taking the last test to earn his GED. You might wonder why an established world champion with the potential to make millions in the coming years and set himself and his family up for life would do such a thing, but Quillin is more curious why you would even wonder why.

“How can I tell kids to stay in school and don’t be a fool when I’m sitting around here without my education?” he said. “I took the hard road and boxing fell into my hand and became such a passion, but I look back and what I would want to promote to my kids is having an education. It’s something that I thought was a very responsible thing to do, and I’ve been working hard to do it, but with such a busy schedule, it’s been tough.”

Next month, that will be another item on the Quillin bucket list to check off. The first one on the current list? Keep his title, and that means vanquishing the always-tough Rosado.

“I look at him as just another guy I’m fighting, another personality, another style that I’m gonna learn right there in the ring, and I can never say that I’ve been in there with a person like Gabriel Rosado,” said Quillin, who just celebrated his one year anniversary as champion on October 20th.

On that 2012 night in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Quillin put France’s Hassan N’Dam down six times en route to a 12 round unanimous decision victory. Six months later, Fernando Guerrero visited the deck four times before being stopped by Quillin in the seventh round. The win over Guerrero lifted Quillin’s pro record to 29-0 (21 KOs) and established him as one of those fighters you will make sure you’re watching whenever he’s on television. New York fans always knew this about their hometown favorite, but the rest of the world was slow to catch on, leaving Quillin on the outside looking in for longer than most.

“I tried not to worry about the guys before me that were getting opportunities that I felt I wasn’t getting,” he said. “I just had to let them worry about their own stuff and I worried about my own. I figured my time was gonna come, and I would have to appreciate it.”

Signing with Golden Boy Promotions and winning a June 2012 bout against Winky Wright finally accelerated the process for him, and when matched with N’Dam, he made the most of his opportunity. Today, he refuses to look back.

“Now it’s my time, and I’m appreciating everything that’s going on,” he said. “When it comes to the past, it’s like bumps in the road when you’re in a car. You go over a bump and you’re like ‘damn, that was big,’ but eventually, when you get to see the bump, it’s in your rearview, and the further you go, the bump disappears. So I stay in my present, don’t worry too much about the future, and forget about the past. And now, I have to work even harder.”

If he gets by Rosado, that will be another win, another paycheck, and another step toward bigger fights. At middleweight, the established champion is Sergio Martinez, the heir apparent is Gennady Golovkin, and the dark horse of the championship quartet is Darren Barker. Fights for Quillin against any of those three are appealing, even if promotional and television ties may make them pipe dreams at the moment. But as far as Quillin is concerned, he’s a firm believer that things find a way of eventually working themselves out.

“The mind is a powerful thing and if you use it to your advantage, you can see huge rewards from it,” he said. “Back then I may have had penny thoughts, but I always had million dollar dreams.”

Now it’s time to cash in on those dreams.

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is looking at several possible options for 2014, which he plans to explore after Manny Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38KOs) vs. Brandon Rios (31-1-1, 23KOs) is finished on November 23rd in Macau, China. This match is the final bout of Arum’s three fight welterweight series of 2013, which began when WBO champion Timothy Bradley won a twelve round split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez on October 12th, and then a week later Ruslan Provodnikov stopped Mike Alvarado in ten rounds to capture the WBO title at 140-pounds.

“This is the last of the three fights – Manny vs. Rios — and a lot of it depends on who the winner of this fight will be.  There are some fantastic matches that can be made next year with these fighters.  Manny has unfinished business with Tim Bradley and that might be a good option if he beats Rios.  If Rios wins, Ruslan Provodnikov or Bradley would be good opponents,” Arum said.

“Provodnikov versus Manny, if Manny wins, would be an intriguing kind of fight.  And of course there is a revenge match-up between Manny, if Manny wins, and Juan Manuel Márquez, which would be very sellable with the Mexican-Americans – that are still heavily in Marquez’s corner – that would like to see that fight again.  So let’s see how this fight goes on November 23rd and then I’m sure everyone will sit down and we’ll work out who Manny and Brandon will fight next.”

According to manager Alex Morrison, WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11KOs) will meet rival Ray Beltran (28-6-1, 17KOs) for a second time on a date in early February in Glasgow, Scotland. They first collided on September 7, where Burns was dropped in the eight and had his jaw badly broken. Burns went on to retain his title with a very controversial twelve round draw, which even the UK press disagreed with.

Alex Morrison told The Scotsman: “Eddie Hearn has reached an agreement with Beltran’s people for a rematch in Glasgow in February next year. Ricky made it clear from the moment the first fight between the two was over that he felt he owed Beltran a second chance and that speaks volumes for the type of man he is.

“After suffering the type of injury he did, many a fighter would be loath to go back in the ring, never mind face the same opponent again who had inflicted these injuries. Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28 KO) remains the true Middleweight Champion of the World.

He may not be the best Middleweight in the world anymore.

In the span of eight days, we will see the two strongest ‘heirs apparent’ to his throne and either might be favored to beat the 38-year old Argentine right now.  The louder hype, for the moment, centers on Kazakhstan’s 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO).  The 31-year old has been a professional since 2006 and will attempt his ninth defense of a WBA belt, and sixth defense of the IBO belt, against Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO) in New York next Saturday.

This Saturday, the spotlight falls on the less hyped, but in many ways equally impressive, WBO titlist at 160 lbs.  30-year old Peter Quillin (29-0, 21 KO), fighting out of Brooklyn, turned professional in 2005 and has slowly developed into a dangerous fighter.  Borrowing a nickname from one of the greats of the 1930s, this “Kid Chocolate” has shown sweet potential in his last four fights.

He will attempt to defend his belt for the second time against Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO).  Quillin is expected to win.

The biggest question: if he does as expected, what will it look like?

When all else fails, boxing is a sport happy to promote based on comparison-shopping of the eyes.  Rosado challenged Golovkin in January of this year and, while defeated, gave a spirited account and lasted into the seventh round.  Reports of Golovkin battling the flu notwithstanding, if Quillin can dispose of Rosado earlier, easier, he will have a feather in his cap of what should be seen as the division’s real developing rivalry.

Quillin doesn’t have Golovkin in front of him this weekend.  Instead, he engages in what can best be called a proxy war.

It’s one he’d be well served to win.  The accomplishment gap between Golovkin and Quillin, in terms of quality wins, isn’t that wide.  The perception gap is.

Given the curt circumstances of the relationships between HBO and Showtime, perception matters for Quillin.  He’s in a tough spot.  Both Golovkin and Martinez are tied, for the moment, to HBO.  Most of the best action in the division this year has taken place on that network.  The action from 140-154 lbs. is well spread between the two networks.

In those divisions, Showtime is drawing from the deeper pool and has the premiere draw in the sport, Floyd Mayweather, on their side.  It’s not so from 160-68, where HBO also has the legitimate World Super Middleweight Champion Andre Ward on their side and has aired some of his better challengers as well.

Quillin could become one of the bigger victims of this whole mess.  To be the man, one eventually has to beat him and Quillin is a fighter who needs flexibility in networks that may not be available to him right away.

In lieu of that, the proxy wars he can win are of immeasurable value.  They are pathways to create public demand for him to be more than the Showtime side of the Middleweight bracket.  It’s not like he runs out of foes after Rosado, should he win this weekend.  Daniel Jacobs (26-1, 23 KO), a cancer survivor, is a great story.  Resurgent since returning to action in 2004 and a fellow New Yorker, he could make a fine challenger next year.

Up one class, Showtime will air the 168 lb. title fight between WBC titlist Sakio Bika (32-5-2, 21 KO) and Anthony Dirrell (26-0, 22 KO) in December.  A move up the scale isn’t out of the question.

Opponents can emerge.  They aren’t Martinez, Golovkin, and Ward.

Short of Mayweather moving up to Quillin to attempt a title in a sixth weight class, Quillin may want to root for Al Haymon stablemate Edwin Rodriguez (24-0, 16 KO) to upset Ward (26-0, 14 KO).  That could shift some scales.

For the time being, all he can do is win.  He’s done that against a fair set of recent foes.  A breakthrough stoppage of fringe contender Craig McEwan in 2011 announced him as a serious comer.  Subsequent wins that halted the comeback of “Winky” Wright, sent the capable Hasan N’Dam N’Jikam to the canvas five times for a title, and a dominant knockout of Fernando Guerrero elevated Quillin.

Compare those wins to the best Golovkin has posted.  Is there really that big a gap in quality between N’Jikam and Matthew Macklin?  Is beating a faded Wright less an accomplishment than beating a faded Kasim Ouma?  McEwan…Grzegorz Proksa…six of one, half dozen of another.

Where Golovkin has an edge is in the spectacular nature of some of his victories.  Quillin has a chance to try to be more spectacular this weekend.

Sergio Martinez might still be history’s Middleweight king, but in the ring there is every reason to believe the fight for best Middleweight in the world right now is Golovkin-Quillin.  Politics are in the way.

Quillin has to make his case bigger than the politics.

101613stieglitz00tOver 500 fight fans turned up on Wednesday to see WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz and his challenger Isaac Ekpo conduct public workouts at the Paunsdorf Center in Leipzig, Germany. The titleholder showed up with trainer Dirk Dzemski and appeared to be in a good mood and in great shape for the fight on Saturday at Leipzig Exhibition Hall EINS.

His opponent, Nigerian Isaac Ekpo, didn’t show much. In the training ring, he completed only a few light exercises with the jump rope and practiced shadow boxing. Ekpo was given a few pairs of goalie gloves so he can resume his career as a goalkeeper after presumably losing the world championship fight.

The world champion, however, gave the fans several minutes of pad work with his coach, then he stayed and fulfilled boxing fans’ many requests for autographs.

Also showing their skills were WBC Youth titleholder Dominic Bösel, ex-IBF champion Jan Zaveck, and Tom Schwarz and Tom Pahlmann from “Team Germany.”

On this coming coming Saturday, Robert Stieglitz defends the WBO super middleweight crown against Isaac Ekpo.

WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (45-3, 26 KOs) is ready to defend his title against WBO #7 Isaac Ekpo (22-1, 16 KOs) on Saturday night at the EINS Exhibition Hall in Leipzig, Germany.

Below are quotes from Monday’s press conference:

Robert Stieglitz: “I am extremely motivated. I must cap off the honors and the two victories of this year in Leipzig. Being number one and leading the success of the entire SES team makes us all very proud. I was very well prepared in recent fights. But now I have once again stepped up my game. Isaac Ekpo is physically very strong. He will want to use his first world title chance. He is boxing not only for himself but for all of Nigeria. Isaac will give everything. But I am well known for the fact that I can deal with lions!”

Isaac Ekpo: “I want to use my first shot at a world title. I am very happy about it. When Robert Stieglitz enters the ring with a lion, he’ll have a hard time winning. There can be only one: him or me! God will help me and he’s watching over me. I believe in God’s help. Before, I was goalkeeper in soccer. But boxing is a man-against-man situation. This is much more attractive and clear for me. Therefore, I prefer boxing. ”

Ulf Steinforth: “We’ve always had an eye on Leipzig. I always wanted to host an event with championship fights here. We are particularly pleased about October 19th. About 4,500 tickets have already been sold. This makes us optimistic that we can announce in the coming days, we’re sold out.”

OrlandoSalido_IMG_0128

By Luis Sandoval –

Orlando “Siri” Salido was back in vintage form Saturday night as he outworked and dominated Orlando Cruz to recapture the WBO Featherweight championship belt. It’s the same title he lost in January to Mikey Garcia as Salido’s performance against Cruz was night and day compared to how he fared with Garcia.

Now that Salido is once again a champion, he has some great opportunities waiting for him. BoxingScene caught up with Salido and asked who he’d like to face next.

“I want to face the best fighters. Whoever is there. There’s [Nonito] Donaire, there’s the Olympian [Vasyl] Lomachenko. There are various names” Salido would tell BoxingScene.

Two time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko made his professional debut on the same card as Salido and there are already plans to match both men up for their next fight. Lomachenko is definitely on a fast track as facing a 54 fight veteran champion like Salido is a drastic step up for him in his 2nd professional fight even if he does have one of the most impressive amateur careers.

“I thought [Lomachenko] looked good. He moved but he was fighting a much smaller fighter. We have to see how it looks when he faces a true Featherweight like [myself]” said Salido. “He has a very good amateur career. Olympics, world championships and they say he deserves [a fight with me]. So if he deserves it, we’re here ready for him”.

Another fight that is still on Salido’s mind is a rematch with Mikey Garcia who soundly defeated him in their contest. Salido feels he wasn’t in the right state of mind for that fight and if he got a chance to rectify that loss, he’d take it in a heartbeat.

“The last fight I had some problems and I wasn’t fully focused on what I had to do in the ring. I went in there just to get hit and tonight was different. This time we had a positive mentality to win and to do my job and to look good. I still have that torn in my side and if I get a chance to fight [Garcia] again, then bring it on” said the WBO Featherweight champion.

It was also recently reported by BoxingScene that Gary Russell Jr has been designated as the mandatory challenger for Salido’s title so he immediately gets put in the mix as well. Per the WBO, Russell must be given a title shot within the next 180 days.

Looks like Salido and his team have their work cut out for them as they decide who they will face next.

WBO jr welterweight world champion “Mile High” Mike Alvarado (34-1, 23 KOs) and #1 contender Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2, 15 KOs) just hosted an international media conference call to discuss their HBO-televised showdown on Saturday night in Denver.

Mike Alvarado: “This fight has ‘war’ written all over it…there’s a chance this fight could turn into that. I have a good game plan. I know I’m going to box the way I need to to win this fight, but you never know. This fight could always turn into a crazy war.”

Ruslan Provodnikov: “I am ready for anything. I can also box. I don’t think anybody can run from me and I don’t think he will box as well as he thinks.”

Bob Arum: There’s not much I can say as a promoter. I don’t have to sell this fight. Anyone that knows anything about boxing knows that going in this fight is going to be a candidate for fight of the year. Two great warriors, two guys that entertain the public, you don’t need a sales pitch for this one. https://www.sravni.ru/kredity/moskva/

WBO President Paco Valcarcel has declared unbeaten featherweight Gary Russell Jr. to be the organization’s mandatory challenger to Mexican Orlando Salido, giving Salido the next 180 days within which to defend against Russell after having won the vacant belt by seventh-round knockout over Orlando Cruz on Saturday at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

The ruling would not preclude a planned voluntary defense for Salido (40-12-2, 28 knockouts) against Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko for Jan. 25 at New York’s Madison Square Garden, a possibility mentioned by Top Rank CEO Bob Arum after Lomachenko’s fourth-round stoppage of Mexican rival Jose Luis Ramirez (25-4, 15 KOs) on Saturday.

Like Salido-Cruz, Lomachenko-Ramirez happened on the undercard of Tim Bradley’s split-decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez. A 25-year-old amateur star, Lomachenko (1-0, 1 KO) was a winner of his second Olympic gold medal at the 2012 Games in London. [Editor’s note: Lomachenko took part in six World Series of Boxing semi-pro bouts that were scheduled for five rounds before officially turning pro.]

“If Salido wants to fight Lomachenko in January, then he could do it,” said Valcarcel. “Because we’re talking (about) Salido having (to) face Russell before April. In the interim, he can fight a voluntary. The mandatory would not be due until around April 12.”

A 25-year-old 2004 U.S. Olympian who is coming off a unanimous decision over Juan Ruiz in August,  Russell (23-0, 13 KOs) said he received the news of the WBO’s mandate last Wednesday.

“On Oct. 9, my team received written confirmation from the WBO that I am the mandatory challenger for their featherweight world title,” said Russell, in a prepared release. “I’m ready for my first world title fight and can not wait for the fight to get made.”

The prospect of making Salido-Russell or Russell-Lomachenko could be complicated since Arum and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer are feuding and are aligned with rival networks, HBO and Showtime, respectively.

In addition, Russell has been promoted by Golden Boy through advisor Al Haymon, with whom Arum also has had an adversarial relationship.

Arum doesn’t believe there will be any trouble in making a fight with Russell.

“If those are the rules, then those are the rules. If the winner of Salido-Lomachenko has to fight Russell, then they’ll fight Russell. That’s no big deal,” said Arum. “If we can’t reach an agreement, then we’ll go to purse bid. That’s what it’s designed for. Golden Boy and ourselves have done a number of fights that way, after either we or they won on purse bid.”

Schaefer said the same.

“If it can’t get done, then it will have to go to purse bid,” said Schaefer. “I think that’s fantastic and I think that Gary is definitely up to the challenge.”

MANILA – November is shaping up to be a busy month for Pinoy boxing fans with Filipino boxing superstars Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr. both scheduled to return to the ring after suffering losses.

On Tuesday, the Pinoy Pride Series, presented by ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports, announced its latest boxing event “Filipinos Kontra Latinos” with two world championship belts on the line. It will be held at Araneta Coliseum on November 30.

The Filipino boxers will be led by WBO world light-flyweight champion Donni “Ahas” Nietes, who has held a world title since 2007.

The other Pinoy boxers include:

  • Undisputed WBO world minimumweight champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo, who downed Colombian challenger Jorlie Estrada during the ninth round with a perfect left hook body shot for his first title defense at the Solaire Resort and Casino last July.
  • Milan “El Metodico” Melindo, who displayed tremendous courage despite losing a 12-round unanimous decision in the unifying WBO/WBA world flyweight championship in Macau against Juan Francisco Estrada.
  • Highly ranked WBO No. 4 contender Jason Pagara, whose quest for a world title is an uphill climb for this young boxer; and
  • AJ “Bazooka” Banal, who has a record of 29-21 with 21 KO’s and is currently No. 13 in the WBO bantamweight rankings, and comes fresh from his victory against Abrahan Gomez last July.

Gabriel Rosado: “This is my third fight at middleweight, I’m bigger and stronger, I’ve got a size advantage over Kid Chocolate…I’m going to go through whatever it takes on October 26 to win that title.”

Peter Quillin: “I know Gabe Rosado and I have no problem with him but he’s still going to try to take my title and I don’t take that lightly…I’m going to come out victorious in this fight on October 26.”

Salido_Garcia

By Ryan Burton –

BoxingScene.com recently spoke to former featherweight champion Orlando “Siri” Salido.  The Sonora, Mexico native is just days away from facing Orlando Cruz for the vacant WBO featherweight title.  Salido said that he had a great camp and is looking forward to returning to the ring.

“We had a great training camp.  I had to really work on my legs in camp.  I am not getting any younger and I have been through some difficult fights so I wanted to make sure I was ready.  My legs are ready to go and I feel great,” Salido explained.

Salido last fought in January when he lost a technical decision to Mikey Garcia. Salido was knocked down four times but was having his best round when the fight was stopped when Garcia’s nose was broken by an accidental headbutt.  After the fight Salido said that he planned on testing the waters at 130 pounds but said that this opportunity was too good to pass up.

“I wanted to move up to 130 but when this opportunity to fight for another title at 126 came up it was just to good to pass up.  If everything goes well we will move up after this fight,” Salido said.

The 32-year-old Salido feels like he has unfinished business with Garcia and would like to face him again in the future.  Garcia will make his debut in the super featherweight division when he faces Rocky Martinez for his WBO title on November 9th.

“I definitely want a rematch.  It has been on my mind.  Things like that (headbutts) happen in fights.  They are accidents.  I would definitely like to face him again at 130 pounds,” Salido told BoxingScene.com.

Moses 1_0.story

Paulus Moses retained his WBO International Lightweight title after beating Leonardo Gonzalez of Argentina on a 7th round TKO.

Moses put Gonzalez down with a right hook and although the tough Argentinian immediately got up, Moses was all over him before the referee stepped in to stop the fight, 1 minute 37 seconds into the 7th round.

Moses got a good workout from Gonzales, who was brave but not in the same class.

Moses raked up the points with his sharp jab and quick combinations but his defence was not great, with Gonzalez also regularly finding the target.

In the fifth round Gonzalez pummeled away at Moses on the ropes but Moses got out and finished the round stronger.

Moses controlled round six, landing some quick combinations and moving slickly, before the end came in the seventh round.

In the main supporting bout Tyson Ushona retained his WBO Africa welterweight title with a unanimous points decision over 12 rounds against Kaizer Mabuza of South Africa.

Mabuza gave Ushona a tough workout but in the end all three judges scored the fight 118-109 to Ushona.

Ushona was the busier fighter while he also sent Mabuza to the canvas with a sharp hook in the tenth round.

Pascal Ndomba of Tanzania was no match for Vikapita Meroro who retained his WBO Africa cruiserweight title after a second round TKO.

Meroro held a 6kg advantage and a big reach advantage and after a slow start, landed some big body shots by the second round. Ndomba clearly had had enough and did not come out for the third round.

The results of other fights were as follows:

Martin Haikali beat Nkosinathi Ntshangase (SA) on points over 8 rounds (76-76, 78-75, 78-75).

Peter Malakia beat Matheus Shimbi on points over 6 rounds (58-54, 59-53, 59-53).

Jafet Utoni beat Neaman Angula on points over 4 rounds (40-36, 40-36, 40-36).

Onesmus Nekundi bear Abner Mwafangejo on points over 4 rounds (39-37, 39-37, 38-38).

Mike Shonena beat Kapena Hamunyela on points over 4 rounds (40-34, 40-34, 40-34).

WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is counting down the days until his second defense of his world world title, on Saturday night against former four division champion Juan Manuel Marquez at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. HBO Pay-Per-View will televise the event.

What can we expect on Oct. 12? Why do you feel you will beat Marquez?

Marquez: Juan Manuel Márquez took this fight because I have something he wants. My world championship title belt.  I am all that stands between him and history.  He wants to become México’s first champion to win world titles in five different weight division.

He wants that and I want something else. I want to beat Márquez to heighten my legacy in boxing.  This fight is my date with destiny.

I will win and do it so well on October 12 that Márquez’s fans will become my fans.

Everyone in the world thinks of Márquez and what he did to Manny Pacquiao in their last fight.

But it was the fourth time they fought. Márquez figured him out. He finally got the big win.  Perhaps even his career-defining win.

I am a different kind of fighter. I come to win. I never think of losing, it never crosses my mind. Márquez doesn’t know what to expect from me inside the ring. Like, for  example, my quick in-ring adjustments while fighting my opponents.  Like a quarterback, I am capable of calling and executing audibles when I need to adapt to what I am seeing.

Age will indeed be a factor. This is a young man’s game. Speed kills. So does quick footwork. I am faster and quicker and he won’t be sure what direction I’ll be coming from or what I’m going to be doing.  And as I showed with Ruslan Provodnikov, I have the will to win.  I cannot lose.  I will not lose. I will never give up my belt.

I always wanted to fight Márquez.  He is a great champion, a good family man and a credit to boxing and to México. I have nothing bad to say about him.
But October 12, at Thomas & Mack, will be my night.  The end of an era for Márquez.

This is my time.

Weigh-In Live: Bradley/Marquez debuts Friday, Oct. 11 at 6:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Bradley vs. Marquez takes place Sat., Oct. 12 live on HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00pm ET/6:00pm PT
