Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40KOs) is not going to make a decision regarding his career until 2013. The Mexican star is still celebrating his sixth round knockout of Manny Pacquiao from December 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Marquez, 39, is receiving a lot of pressure from both sides of the fence. The boxer’s wife, Erika, is pushing him to retire. The fans want at least one more fight.

He will enjoy the rest of the holidays with his family and then he plans to sit down and make a final decision on his boxing future.

Either way he goes, he wants the Mexican fans to know how much he appreciates their support.

“[The Mexican fans] have always been with me and I will never forget that. I want to thank [the Mexican fans] from the bottom of my heart. They are a major force for me when I go into the ring to fight,” Marquez said.

“We have not decided anything about what I will do in 2013. I will enjoy the holidays, discuss everything with my family, rest for a while, and then we will [make a decision].”

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez will face off for the fourth time on the 8th of December in Las Vegas. The winner of the much anticipated fight will be crowned the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) Champion of the Decade.

Sartonk Designs, the premier designer and fabricator of championship boxing belts in the world, was commissioned to create a belt for this one and only title. WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel stated today that he is “looking forward with great expectations to the extraordinary design created by the WBO’s Master Craftsmen, Ardash Sahaghian and Edward Majian, for the ‘WBO Champion of the Decade’ belt”.

He foresees that it “will be an outstanding work of art”.

The Champion of the Decade Belt is slated to be a luxurious rendition of the now classic world title belt. While true to the iconic WBO motif, some of its features include over 170 hand-set Swarovski crystals imported from Austria. The eagle that sits atop the center plate has been overhauled and made richer, with crisp detail and an assortment of jewels. A mirror-finished and crystal studded parameter elegantly completes the composition.

“We have surprises on the belt which we won’t unveil just yet,” commented Edward S. Majian, President of Sartonk Designs. “The opportunity to create a belt at the level of fine art is a privilege. Every crevice, curve, and corner has been detailed, and the belt shines brilliantly, symbolizing two men that have given our sport many brilliant moments,” explained Majian. His grandfather, Ardash Sahaghian, the 91-year New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee added, “We’re proud of everything that leaves SARTONK, but this is not just a championship belt. Is a piece that will be awarded once every ten years, this project is of a different character.”

The Champion of the Decade belt is set to be revealed in Las Vegas by the WBO before the Pacquiao-Marquez match.

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao appears headed for a fourth showdown with rival Juan Manuel Marquez rather than a rematch with Timothy Bradley Jr., Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Wednesday.

Arum oversaw the final news conference at Wynn Las Vegas for Saturday’s Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. middleweight championship fight, ate lunch and then dashed off to a meeting with Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz, who also is here this week.

The goal of the meeting, Arum said, was to lock down final terms for Pacquiao-Marquez IV.

“We’re having a meeting about Manny’s next fight and to get everything finalized,” Arum said. “My goal is to finalize the Marquez fight, but I have to meet with (Koncz).”

Pacquiao is due to return to action on Dec. 8. The HBO pay-per-view fight will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, contrary to rumors that the fight would be held in Marquez’s hometown of Mexico City.

“It’s at the MGM,” Arum said. “The eighth is for sure. Vegas is for sure.”

The three candidates to face Pacquiao were Bradley, who won a highly disputed decision against him in June, Marquez and Miguel Cotto, who was stopped by Pacquiao in the 12th round of an action-packed welterweight title fight in 2009.

Pacquiao’s first choice was Cotto, who declined and instead made a deal to challenge junior middleweight titlist Austin Trout on Dec. 1 at Madison Square Garden.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of the picture — for this year at least — that left Marquez and Bradley.

Pacquiao is 2-0-1 against Marquez in three action-packed fights that each ended in a storm of controversy over the scoring, with many believing Marquez had won all three fights — especially their most recent encounter. That was in November at the MGM Grand, where Pacquiao eked out a majority decision to retain his welterweight title.

Bradley pulled the upset on June 9 when he was awarded a controversial split decision against Pacquiao, which resulted in worldwide outrage over the scoring because most people had Pacquiao winning easily — except two of the three judges, Duane Ford and C.J. Ross.

Junior welterweight titlist Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KOs) and Bradley (29-0, 12 KOs) both wanted to meet Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KOs) again because he means career-high purses.

But there has been a divide within Top Rank and Pacquiao’s team on which opponent to select after Cotto turned them down. There also was Arum’s concerns over the cost of putting together each fight compared to the kind of $20 million-plus purse Pacquiao wants.

Some involved wanted to make the Marquez fight because it is, by far, the bigger pay-per-view event based on previous buy rates. The third fight last year sold 1.3 million units, according to Arum, substantially more than the approximately 950,000 sold by the Pacquiao-Bradley fight.

Pacquiao and Marquez also have a rivalry that has enthralled fans through three fights.

The 2004 featherweight championship draw saw Pacquiao knock down Marquez three times in the first round only for Marquez to storm back. In the 2008 junior lightweight championship fight, Pacquiao won on a split decision.

Arum said that if the deal is finalized before the end of the week, he hoped to launch the promotion next week with a news conference in Los Angeles.

Arum said Bradley likely would return against an opponent to be determined in November or December on HBO. Arum said he would like to bring Bradley’s fight to the Theater at Madison Square Garden to “expose him to the fans and media in New York.”

WBO junior welterweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez believes Manny Pacquiao is getting cold feet. Marquez claims Pacquiao is stalling to make a final decision on fighting him for a fourth time – because the Filipino superstar realizes that a fourth meeting would possibly derail a mega-money fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in early 2013.

Marquez, along with Timothy Bradley and Miguel Cotto, is being considered as the HBO pay-per-view opponent for Pacquiao’s return on December 1 or December 8. Marquez, and his promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, believe they are sitting in the frontrunner position to fight Pacquiao.

If Pacquiao decides to fight someone else, like Cotto, then Marquez will defend his title against Bradley on November 10 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. But, if Pacquiao decides to fight Bradley – then Marquez will return in early December in Mexico.

“I finished a meeting in Tijuana with my promoter Fernando Beltrán and he informed me that Pacquiao is still undecided. What’s happening right now is they want Pacquiao to face Floyd Mayweather in April of the next year…..[in a fight] where each of them could earn a guaranteed purse of $40 million dollars. That’s why he is hesitated to make a fight with me, because he knows that if I fight him again – the big money fight can crumble. I can support that as a businessman, because it’s not always possible to get a big purse like that. But I can’t endorse that as an athlete because he’s avoiding another fight with me. He knows that I already beat him three times, and that I will beat it again,” Marquez said.

“As I’ve said, everything depends on Pacquiao. Moreover, he must make a decision in a maximum of ten or fifteen days, no more. If he decides against another fight with me, there is no problem. Then I will make a defense of my WBO world title on November 10 or in early December.”

In a follow-up to an earlier report on BoxingScene.com, WBO junior welterweight king Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) states that he plans to fight the WBO champion at welterweight, Timothy Bradley (29-0, 12KOs), likely on November 10th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Marquez will go for a fight with Bradley – if a potential fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao falls through.

In an earlier BoxingScene report, Marquez’s promoter, Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, said there are ongoing discussions to make a fourth fight with Pacquiao, but there is not contract to outline the terms and the Filipino superstar has yet to make a decision on his next opponent. The dates being discussed are December 1 and December 8th, says Beltran.

“We are first in line [to fight Pacquiao], without any doubt. [However], Juan Manuel and I do not depend on Pacquiao. We have various options; one of them is Tim Bradley, but yes [I think] the fight with Pacquiao will [happen]. We just need to get all of the conditions in writing. On Monday I met with Márquez [in Tijuana] and we talked [but there is no contract to show]. [The fight would happen] in Las Vegas, although the Pacman insists that he would beat Marquez in his home [of Mexico]. And the two dates discussed: 1st or 8th of December,” Beltran said.

Marquez agrees with his promoter.

“I spoke in length with my promoter Fernando Beltrán and we discussed all of the possible scenarios for my next fight. The first scenerio is to face Pacquiao again and that’s almost a fact, but in this business anything can happen. If for any reason Pacquiao does not materialize, we will go against Timothy Bradley in November,” Marquez said.

Beltran said there are “several plans in place for Márquez in the remote chance that we do not go against Manny Pacquiao. There are opponents for Juan Manuel who will turn out to be a success in every aspect.¨

This past Sunday, WBO junior welterweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) held a meeting in Tijuana with promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions. They discussed Marquez’s next ring return in 2012.

The two options include November 10th in a fourth showdown with Manny Pacquiao, either at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas or a venue in Texas. If Pacquiao goes in another direction, then Marquez will make the first defense of his WBO title in early December. Beltran promised Marquez that he would fight before the end of the year. whether it’s against Pacquiao or someone else.

Marquez is waiting for Pacquiao to make a final decision on his next opponent. A decision was expected on Monday, but nothing was finalized.

Later this week, the Mexican champion plans to meet with his coach Nacho Beristain to work out the schedule for their next training camp

WBO light welterweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) is waiting to hear word whether he’ll be selected by Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum to fight on November 10th in Las Vegas, Nevada for a fourth fight between them.

If Marquez doesn’t get the fight with Pacquiao, he says he wants to defend his World Boxing Organization 140 pound title against one of the top contenders.

Marquez told the record.com.mx “Being active is important and I look for a fight in November. I want to defend my title or I’m looking for a 5th world title. But I think I am more inclined to defend my belt and then seek a champion in another division.”

Marquez went on to say that he wants to fight Danny Garcia, Lamont Peterson, and Devon Alexander in the future.

Marquez, 38, hasn’t fought since defeating Serhiy Fedchenko to pick up the WBO interim light welterweight title last April. Before that, Marquez lost a questionable 12 round majority decision to Pacquiao last November. Marquez badly wants a chance to try and avenge the loss to the Filipino fighter, but Pacquiao hasn’t been in a hurry to get back in the ring with him. It took Pacquiao three years to fight Marquez after after beating him by a questionable 12 round split decision in 2008 in a fight that a lot of boxing fans thought that Marquez should have won.

If Marquez doesn’t get the rematch against Pacquiao in November then he can choose from the following fighters for his next bout:

Brandon Rios
Mike Alvarado
Lamont Peterson
Ruslan Provodnikov
Lucas Matthysse
Adrien Broner

WBO junior welterweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) is waiting to speak with his promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions to figure out his next move in 2012. Marquez would like a fourth fight with Manny Pacquiao, who returns on November 10th. Marquez is one of the frontrunners to face Pacquiao in the fall.

If Marquez is unable to secure Pacquiao, he wants to defends one of his titles.

“I hope to talk to him at any moment, either in person or by telephone to find out who I’m going to fight, “Marquez said. “But I haven’t received any news. I want to close the year out by defending one of my titles.”

Marquez is willing to make the first defense of the WBO title at 140-pounds, or even drop down to 135 to defend his WBO/WBA titles. Marquez still regards himself as the WBA/WBO champion at lightweight.

“These [sanctioning bodies] have not informed me otherwise [that I’m not the champion at 135], so I consider myself the lightweight champion of these groups,” Marquez said. “In the ring, nobody has taken the lightweight crown from me.”

WBO interim-junior welterweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) is still training very hard at the Romanza gym in Mexico, preparing for a potential ring return in the month of July. He was scheduled to fight on July 14th at Cowboys Stadium in Texas, but could not agree on the financial figures or the opponent. Now Marquez looks to July 21 or July 28 in Mexico – but makes it clear that he will return “as long I’m guaranteed a fair purse, otherwise I prefer to wait until November.”

Marquez expects to fight Manny Pacquiao for a fourth time in November. Pacquiao faces undefeated Timothy Bradley on June 9th in Las Vegas – a location where Marquez prefers not to fight Pacquiao.

“For a new fight with Pacquiao, I’m going to ask for us not to do it in Las Vegas. I have robbed there three times, and I do not want it happening again. I disagree with the manner of designating the judges by the Commission of Nevada. I will ask for the fight to be made in Texas or California, where things are more flexible in a matter of [selecting] judges. Moreover, if you will, the judges should be integrated with a Mexican, a Filipino and an American. What I want is to have honest, impartial judges appointed,” Marquez said.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) will not be fighting on July 14th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. There have been disagreements over the opponent, with Marquez pushing to fight southpaw boxers like Cesar Cuenca and Mercito Gesta.

Marquez wanted a southpaw opponent to prepare for a potential fourth meeting with Manny Pacquiao in the fall. Top Rank had initially wanted to match Marquez against undefeated Brandon Rios, which the Mexican veteran rejected because Rios wasn’t a southpaw.

There were even discussions between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions to match Marquez against countryman Erik Morales, but again Marquez wasn’t too eager, telling BoxingScene.com last week that he wasn’t interested because Morales wasn’t a southpaw.

One source told BoxingScene.com that Marquez had yet to finalize an opponent – and considering the July date is only a few weeks away, there simply wasn’t enough time to properly promote a pay-per-view event in such a short time period.

MORE DETAILS TO COME…………..

On Friday, BoxingScene.com published an interview with WBO interim-junior welterweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs). The former three division champion is scheduled to return on July 14th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The opponent is still being determined. However, Marquez is pushing to face undefeated lightweight contender Mercito Gesta (25-0-1, 13KOs) – because Marquez believes the Filipino boxer will help him prepare for a potential fourth meeting with Manny Pacquiao in November.

Marquez wants a southpaw opponent, with similar characteristics to Pacquiao, and he believes Gesta meets those requirements.

“The important thing is to face an opponent with the characteristics of Pacquiao. Gesta is a young fighter, with speed, and he meets the profile. When I find out my opponent, I will also define my sparring partners, looking for left handed boxers with speed. Gesta is good, undefeated, and meets the characteristics,” Marquez told BoxingScene.com.

Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum spoke to BoxingScene.com, and while he admits Marquez would rather face Gesta, the fight is extremely difficult to make – because Marquez doesn’t exactly fight for peanuts and a fight against Gesta is a tough sell on pay-per-view.

“The problem with Mercito Gesta – is how do you sell it on pay-per-view? Would he rather fight Mercito Gesta because Gesta is a lefty and he would prepare him for Pacquiao – of course, yes – but so what. How can you pay him the purse that he wants against a Gesta, because you know and I know that it’s going to be very tough for it to do business [on pay-per-view],” Arum told BoxingScene.com.

“But he knows that. One thing about Juan Manuel, he’s an educated guy and very, very smart.”

A more realistic option is former four division champion Erik Morales (52-8, 36KOs).

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who promotes Morales, has had positive discussions with Top Rank’s President, Todd duBoef, about putting together a fight with Marquez.

BoxingScene.com recently spoke to WBO junior welterweight interm champion Juan Manuel Marquez who is scheduled to return to the ring on July 14th at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The four division champion last fought in April when he dominated Sergey Fedechenko to pick up the aforementioned junior welterweight title.  Marquez said he felt strong in what was his first fight at the 140 pound limit. He fought Manny Pacquiao in his prior fight at a catchweight of 144 pounds.

“I felt very strong with Pacquiao and Fedchenko. I trained very hard for both fights. I feel strong at welterweight and junior welterweight,” Marquez told BoxingScene.com.

Marquez is 0-2-1 in three close fights versus Pacquiao and has openly complained about the scores in all the fights. He feels that he should have won at least one if not all three fights which prompted my colleague Ryan Maquiñana  to ask Marquez if he is worried about the judging in a potential fourth showdown.

“We will train hard (to get the win) and if I get the fight then great but I need to worry about July 14th first,” Martinez explained as he didn’t want to look too far ahead.

Marquez finished our conversation by saying that he is looking forward to fighting at the Cowboys stadium.  It will mark the third time that Marquez has fought in the lone star state.

“I will like fighting in Cowboys Stadium. July 14th will be my first time in [in that venue]. Texas has a lot of Mexican people and I will enjoy fighting there,” revealed Marquez.

Marquez is expected to reveal his opponent in the coming days.

Undefeated Filipino southpaw Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta is among three fighters being considered as an opponent for a fight against four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez on July 14 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard that Gesta “looked very, very good (against Oscar Cuero over whom he won by an 8th round TKO ) and he will probably fight on July 14 on our card in Cowboy Stadium.”

Responding to Marquez himself who  fueled speculation about a possible Gesta fight when he announced after a unanimous decision over victory over Sergey Fedchenko to grab the WBO junior welterweight interim title,  that he would fight a lefty next on July 14 in Texas, Arum said “Marquez will either fight (Brandon) Rios, Gesta or (Mike) Alvarado.”

Gesta’s trainer and co-manager Vince  Parra said Gesta’s team was set to discuss his July 14 fight with Top Rank and said “we are looking at a significant step up” and that Marquez was a possibility although no decisions have been made.

Reacting to the comments of TV announcers Rich Marotta and former world champion Raul Marquez that Gesta needs a couple of fights before eyeing champions such as Marquez who his an excellent counter-puncher, Parra said “styles make fights but whether it’s the next fight or the fight after I expect him to do well.”

He said Gesta would take a few days break and return to the gym in San Diego to get ready for his next fight no matter who the opponent is.

The TV commentators said Gesta “showed a little bit of everything – speed, explosive power, good footwork” and the ability to switch from his regular southpaw stance to orthodox.

However, Marotta and Marquez said Gesta needs to work on his defense and although Marotta said it was “a nice performance” they  both felt he is not yet ready for a world title fight.

Top Rank president Todd DuBoef had earlier told Bev Llorente of ABS-CBN in Las Vegas “Gesta is a terrific fight, I think he’s knocking on the title’s door” while boxingscene.com editor Rick Reeno added Gesta is “an aggressive fighter nwho is always looking to fight. He likes to come forward and he certainly has a shot in the lightweight division of getting a world title. A lot of the lightweights are moving up and it leaves a door wide open for him.”

Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39KOs) is not looking past his next oppnent, Eastern Euro boxer Sergey Fedchenko (30-1, 13KOs) of Ukraine. The clash happens on April 14th at the new Arena Mexico in Mexico City – for the vacant interim-WBO junior welterweight title.

Over the weekend, Juan Manuel went through another hard day of training, going six hard rounds in sparring with Alejandro Barrera, Luis Acuña and Aaron Herrera, which resulted in a big ovation from the ringside observers at the Romanza Gym.

“Fedchenko looks like a respectable opponent. One thing I do not do [is come into a fight overconfident]. You know, confidence can kill a man. I abused [confidence] in the first fight against Manny Pacquiao. I went out to attack him in the first round, and I was connecting well – but then suddenly he sent me to the canvas. And there wasn’t just a [single knockdown], but three in one round. From the second round on, I decided to box and [he couldn’t hit me anymore]. And I think I won the fight on points, but I was robbed with a draw,” Marquez said.

Marquez’s trainer, Nacho Beristain, is confident that his boxer will figure Fedchenko out.

“We know who Fedchenko is. [We have] references, videos of his fights, and everything indicates that he is a skilled boxer, difficult. But its not the first time that we’ve fought with a [difficult opponent] and found [ways to win]. When we spoke about this fight, the first thing we said is that we must be well prepared for any surprises.

“There is not such thing as a small opponent, just like there is no such thing as an invincible adversary.”
