ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer plans to stage a voluntary title defense of World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes sometime in September in Dubai.

Aldeguer spoke to the Manila Standard following his return from the United Arab Emirates, along with vice president Dennis Canete and ABS-CBN Sports Peter Musngi, who joined them in Dubai for a series of meetings with officials of The Filipino Channel, headed by Maribel Rodriguez and various events specialists.

The Dubai fight card is just one part of the exciting expansion plans of ALA Promotions, in partnership with ABS-CBN, which will also see fight cards  promoted in the United States sometime next year.

Musngi told Manila Standard that “more venues are available in September,” and that was the reason for not pushing the title fight to October when “lots of things are happening.”

With the large Filipino community in Dubai, who have enjoyed the highly successful “Pinoy Pride” series telecast live on The Filipino Channel of  ABS-CBN, Musngi said: “The prospects are great.”

Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Timothy Bradley Jr., and four-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez formally announced their October 12 world championship event today with a Los Angeles news conference at The Beverly Hills Hotel.

Timothy Bradley: This is an opportunity for me that I had in the Pacquiao fight that slipped away due to the controversy to become a superstar in boxing and a force too be reckoned with, to be recognized and have a position in boxing. And that didn’t happen. But in this fight it’s gonna happen. It has to happen. Because I wanna be a superstar in boxing. I wanna be a household name. I’m a four-time world champion and I still don’t have a position in boxing yet. I should be on everyone’s pound-for-pound list, but after this fight, October 12, I will be on everybody’s pound-for-pound list without a doubt.

Juan Manuel Marquez: If I want to be the best, I need to beat the best and the best is the champion. Bradley is the champion and I’m ready for that fight. Everyone know what happened in November 2011 (Bradley’s controversial win over Manny Pacquiao). This belt should be mine. On October 12 I’ll be back for the belt!

Bob Arum: Some writers asked me ‘Do you think this event will be overshadowed by the event in September, Mayweather-Canelo, and the event in November, Pacquiao-Rios?’ And I said, ‘No I don’t think so because I think this fight is the best of the three of them. This is the most competitive fight and I think the fans will realize it.’ It’s my hope that the fans buy all three fights because all three fights are very interesting and deserve the support of the fans. But I don’t believe this fight will be overshadowed by anyone.

The Bradley-Marquez press tour will conclude tomorrow with a news conference in Mexico City.

Merlito Sabillo will make his first defense of the World Boxing Organization mini-flyweight title in grand style on July 6.

Sabillo, who was installed as the WBO’s 105-lb king on the strength of his huge interim title fight victory in Colombia last March, is being targeted to face Jorle Estrada, a Colombian.

The spanking new Solaire Resort and Casino is being eyed to host the world championship fight, according to ALA Boxing executive Dennis Canete.

The Solaire casino has been making heads turn the past couple of months and an appearance by Sabillo there could be a game changer.

Sabillo is one of three reigning Filipino world champions. The other two are Sabillo’s stablemate Donnie Nietes (WBO light-fly king) and Johnreil Casimero (IBF light-fly ruler).
The Philippines is aiming to make up for the losses suffered by main fighters Manny Pacquiao, Brian Viloria and Nonito Donaire the past few months.

After Sabillo’s defense in early-July, it will be the turn of another ALA puncher, Milan Melindo, who will challenge Viloria’s conqueror, Juan Francisco Estrada for the WBO and WBA fly crown on July 28 in Macau.

Milanmelindo

Monday, May 27, 2013

PREPARATION and strategy are always the keys to a victory in any fight.

ALA Gym head coach Edito Villamor has already devised a game plan, while Milan Melindo has been working extra hard in the gym ahead of his world title fight two months from now.

“His training is going great. We have been doing physical and endurance training for almost a month. We have started spar play in preparation for the start of sparring next week,” Villamor told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.

Melindo is challenging Juan Francisco Estrada for his World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association flyweight belts on July 27 at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Casino and Resort in Macau.

Villamor and Melindo both believe that they have Estrada all figured out. They feel that Estrada’s weakness is his body, which was also his main arsenal when he beat Brian Viloria.

“He has improved his power but we are preparing to go the distance. We plan to outbox the whole 12-round fight but if there is an opportunity, we will go all out. We are also improving the toughness of Milan’s body,” said Villamor. “Our plan is to use blocking defense then counter punch to the body but it depends on the actual fight and what will be the opening. Or maybe we could fight from the distance so that Estrada won’t be able to use his body punches.”

The 23-year-old Estrada used some vicious blows to the body to weaken Viloria and walk away with a tight split decision to win the twin titles last month, also in Macau. Melindo was also victorious on that same night, when he stopped Indonesian Tommy Seran in four rounds.

The 24-year-old Melindo is unbeaten with an impressive 29-0 slate with 12 knockouts, while Estrada is 24-2 with 18 knockouts.

Unbeaten Genesis Servania (20-0, 8 KOs) is also slated in the same blockbuster Macau card against Japanese former world title challenger Konosuke Tomiyama (23-5-1, 8 KOs).

Servania, who will make his international debut, is off a dominant third round knockout over Indonesian prospect Isack Junior last Saturday night at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.

sabillo

By Ronnie Nathanielsz |

World Boxing Organization minimum weight champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo will  make the first defense of his title on July 6, possibly at the plush Solaire  Resort and Casino in the Entertainment City along Manila Bay.

Sabillo is undefeated with a record of 21-0 with 11 knockouts and will No. 6 ranked Jorle Estrada of Colombia in a voluntary defense.

The 24-year-old Estrada who is five years younger than Sabillo has a record of 16-6 with 5 knockouts.

The hard-hitting Sabillo won the WBO Interim title with a stunning 8th round TKO over heavily favored Luis De La Rosa who was fighting before his hometown fans in Colombia but couldn’t handle the aggressive Filipino in an all-action clash from the very first bell.

De La Rosa was cut in the opening round but it only fired him up and he rocked Sabillo a couple of times with some big shots but the courageous Filipino refused to back off and gave as good as he got.

Sabillo turned the fight around when he dropped De La Rosa with a big right hand in the 8th round  and although he beat the count the Colombian was in serious trouble prompting Sabillo to go after him and drop him again with a wicked left.

De La Rosa beat the count but was clearly in no position in continue forcing the referee to call a halt at 2:58 of the round.

Sabillo was elevated to full champion after Moises Fuentes who was struggling to make the 105-pound limit relinquished the title and moved up to light flyweight where he failed to wrest the title from long-reigning champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes who retained his title in a majority draw.

Fuentes wanted an immediate rematch but ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said they couldn’t accede to the request because Nietes suffered a nasty cut above the eye in that title defense and it took some time to heal.

WINDHOEK – Following his trouncing of Thailand’s Pungluang Sor Singyu to become Namibia’s 3rd world champion, undisputed World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight world champion Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda will on August 4 make his first title defence when he squares off against Japanese boxer Tomoki Kameda, in the Philippines City of Cebu.

Under normal circumstances, Ambunda should only be obliged to fight a mandatory fight after nine months from the date of winning the world title but his promoter Nestor Tobias said they have accepted the challenge from the Japanese camp because Ambunda is in good shape and hungry for more success.

Tobias said both camps have agreed on a neutral venue, so that also gives Ambunda more room to successfully defend his first title fight. “We would have loved to stage his first title defence fight in Namibia but unfortunately due to lack of funds, we have to fight away from home but luckily it’s a neutral venue. We expect a very tough fight, but we are confident to retain this world title not only for now but for a very long time to come,” said Tobias.

“We have received a number of offers from across the world to fight  Ambunda and have considered them all but opted for the best quality fighter, who is Kameda,” he added.

Kameda, 22, is the current reigning WBC silver champion and rated number 4 in the world under the WBC and number 6 in the world under the WBO. He is an undefeated Japanese Mexican boxer, who is also the current WBC FECARBOX, WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation bantamweight and WBC youth world super bantamweight champion.

He hails from a rich boxing family and is a brother to Koko Kameda who is the current WBA and WBC bantamweight champion and also to Daiki Kameda who is the current WBA flyweight champion

“We however wish to ensure that Namibians watch this fight live and we are in negotiations with NBC TV to buy rights for Namibia so that our fans don’t miss this fight. We at MTC Nestor Sunshine Academy would also like to invite all Namibians to contact any travel agency to book their tickets and accompany us to the Philippines to support The Rock,” concluded Tobias.

Former World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior featherweight and featherweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), of Caguas, Puerto Rico discusses his June 15 showdown with undefeated WBO featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs) of Oxnard, California . Their HBO-televised collision will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

How do you feel coming into this fight?
I feel really good; I have good preparation for this type of fight.

Stepping in against Garcia after tough losses to Salido
It’s all about styles and I think are styles are going to match and I have a great opponent.

Are you going to try and knock him out?
We are going to go hard, pressure him, pressure him and if the knock comes or 12 rounds, we got to be prepared everyday.

On leaving Puerto Rico for training to stay focused which has been an issue in the past
It is difficult to leave Puerto Rico, we have talked about it before, going to Big Bear, going to other places to train, but you know what, I love my kids and I get to see them all the time, I can’t see myself leaving them for a long period of time. Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs) of Oxnard, California discusses his June 15 showdown with former WBO junior featherweight and WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), of Caguas, Puerto Rico. Their HBO-televised collision will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Any concerns on fighting Juanma
Not a concern but the most thing you have to watch out for is his power, heavy handed, both hands. He is very powerful and strong so that is something you have to watch out for.

Confidence from beating Salido so easily while Juanma lost twice
Not necessarily, because styles make fights and he’s a different style than Salido, I have to prepare for Juanma not Salido this time, so I have to make sure I am in the best shape possible.

Are you in the best shape?
I am. I am getting there. I have been training for that last 4 weeks and we have almost 5 weeks left so it will be a total camp of 9 weeks but I have been training longer than that to stay in shape but for this camp it will be a nine week camp.

Strategy for the fight and whether to box from the outside
We don’t know yet because the fight might unfold a little differently. We are going to prepare and be able to adjust to do many things in the ring. With the kind of power that he has, we have to be careful for that. I think that as a southpaw we got to work for him and sometimes putting a little pressure on a southpaw is the best thing to do, so we got to prepare for many things.

Do you expect to knock out Juanma?
I’m not expecting to knock him out but if I hurt him and the knockout is there, it’s in front of me than I will take it, but we are preparing for a twelve round fight.

How has life changed since becoming a world champion?
I don’t feel any different but people treat you differently but people want to greet you and shake your hand and that’s always really nice for the fans to do that. I have said before, the fans are what makes me feel like a world champion.

16 may 2013 PRE PESAJE JUANMA LOPEZ 01 (4) (720x464)

CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO – Former two time world champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez is completely focused in his next fight against the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia on June 15 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas in a Top Rank presentation to be broadcast on HBO.

Juanma Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), who is ranked #4 by the WBO in the featherweights, weighed today at 138 pounds of a 144.9 pounds maximum, as part of the Puerto Rico Professional Boxing Comission 30- day pre weigh-in.

“We are working to make the weight and to get the best condition. Our goal was to make 139 pounds today and we made 138, it’s so good”, said Lopez, who was going to train after the pre weigh in. “We are one month before the fight and I’m feeling very good with the training. As we made two fights (in February and April) this year, I kept in the gym all the time. We want to be in 131 or 132 pounds next week and work with that weight for the finals weeks, but I’m so good, eating good and in a good mood”.

Lopez, who come off two KO wins in February and April, 2013, over Aldimar Silva Santos and Eugenio Lopez, respectively, has a bruise on his face because he fell yesterday during his morning workout.

“In a reaction work with the medicine ball, I slipped on the on the wet race track and fell, unbeleivable, that’s the first time in my career”, said Lopez laughing.

Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs) come off a spectacular win over Orlando Salido to win the WBO featherweight belt on January 19, when he sent Salido four times to the canvas. Garcia won by technical decision in nine rounds when he hurted his nose after an accidental headbutt and didn’t continue the fight.

“I think that styles make the fights and I know that the style of Mikey Garcia is good for me. We are working in it, but also for anything he brings”, said Lopez.

PIERDE_CHELO_GONZALEZ_ANTE_RICKY_BURNS_AL_NO_SALIR_EN_EL_10mo__08

Photos: Joel Colon PR Best –

Ricky Burns ended the tremendous challenge of Puerto Rico’s Jose Gonzalez to retain his WBO world lightweight title in Glasgow.

Gonzalez, unbeaten in his previous 22 bouts, retired at the end of the ninth round with a damaged left wrist.

At that point, there was little to separate the two as Burns was tested to the full in his third title defence.

And the 30-year-old Scot must have experienced as much relief as delight when the bout was ended prematurely.

The partisan crowd would have wilted the fighting desire of lesser men but Gonzalez was bright and game in the opening round, flashing out his left fist to keep the more aggressive Burns at bay.

The opening two rounds suggested the fight could be a thriller, with Gonzalez breaking from his more languid style to mix it up on occasion with the home favourite.

Burns’s nose was bloodied in the third and the challenger enjoyed success with two-fisted attacks towards the end of the round.

However, the Scot grinned at the attempt and was ferocious with his own assaults.

With 17 knockouts in an unblemished 22-fight career, the challenger posed considerable danger to Burns but, as is his style, he was prepared to take a few shots to land some of his own on the 29-year-old from Toa Baja.

Against Kevin Mitchell in his last defence, Burns looked bigger and stronger than his opponent: not so with Gonzalez.

By the midway point in the fight, the pair looked evenly matched, each able to boast of inflicting pain on the other and of making their opponent miss with superb reflexes.

Worryingly for the champion, Gonzalez looked wonderfully composed, even winking to his corner on occasion.

The seventh round was Gonzalez’s strongest as he pinned Burns against the ropes and blasted at his arms and body.

Burns was off balance and ragged and was under the greatest threat since the opening rounds of the bout against Roman Martinez, which he won to become world champion at super-featherweight.

Whatever advice trainer Billy Nelson imparted had the desired effect as Burns caught Gonzalez with a sickening left to the body to stem the tide in the eighth, an impression that continued into the ninth as he began to assert himself once more by being quicker off the mark in their exchanges.

And when the challenger remained seated in his corner as the bell sounded for the 10th, the crowd roared to acclaim their hero – and the talent of the challenger.

On the undercard, John Simpson was too accurate and too composed for Choi Tseveenpurev from Mongolia. The Greenock fighter took the vacant WBO inter-continental super-featherweight title with a unanimous points win – 116-112, 117-112, 116-113.

As has been the case throughout his career, the 41-year-old proved impossible to stop and at least he left Glasgow with that record intact.

But Simpson had to work hard for his win, wisely choosing when to attack and when to cover up to avoid the upper cuts and sharp punches from the brave opponent.

In the end, despite a bloody nose, Simpson’s work was the more telling and his victory was thoroughly deserved.

Edinburgh’s Steve Simmons won the vacant Celtic cruiserweight title after Michael Sweeney’s corner retired the Irish fighter with an unspecified injury after three rounds.

Glasgow super-featherweight Michael Roberts survived a cut eye in the third round and some thumping, varied shots in the sixth to beat Brentford-based Polish southpaw Mariusz Bak.

Judges gave the Scot the nod with a score of 58-57. The 26-year-old takes his record to 12 wins and no defeats as he seeks to build a case for a tilt at the British title.

Burns v Gonzalez

Gonzalez troubles Burns with excellent movement and jabbing over first six rounds

Explosive seventh round sees both men take serious punishment

Burns shows superior strength to control rounds eight and nine

Gonzalez retires with damaged hand – his first loss in 23 fights

Burns’ record now stands at 36 wins from 38 bouts

Now he has to prove he can remain a world champion when he faces one of the toughest men in the division in two-time world champion Juanma,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank. “This caps off an incredible run for boxing during the first half of 2013.”

“Mikey Garcia versus Juan Manuel Lopez is a can’t miss attraction,” says Kery Davis, senior vice president, HBO Sports. “Dallas is a first-class sports destination and we’re thrilled to be going to the American Airlines Center. June 15 is a date fight fans need to circle on their boxing calendar.”

Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs), of Oxnard Calif., a 2010 graduate of California’s Ventura County Police and Sheriff’s Reserve Officer Academy, returns to the ring having won 14 of his past 16 bouts by knockout. In his last fight, on January 19, he dethroned two-time featherweight champion Orlando Salido at Madison Square Garden via an eight-round technical win that had Garcia winning virtually every round against the seasoned veteran. Garcia, 25, had a career-best year in 2011, knocking out previously undefeated contender Matt Remillard in the 10th round in March to capture his NABF and NABO title belts. He followed that with four-round knockout title defense victories of Rafael Guzman and Juan Carlos Martinez in June and October, respectively. Guzman and Martinez had a combined record of 47-14-1 when they fought Garcia. Last year, he continued his winning ways, knocking out one-time world title challenger Bernabe Concepcion and former world champion Mauricio Pastrana, in the seventh and second rounds, respectively. He ended his 2012 campaign by knocking out former WBA featherweight champion Jonathan Barros in the eighth round on November 10, 2012. Garcia is trained by his father Eduardo Garcia and co-managed and trained by his brother, 2012 Trainer of the Year Robert Garcia, the former IBF junior lightweight champion.

Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, returns to the ring for the third time this year, with 21 of his past 22 victories coming by way of knockout. The latest victims were Aldimar Santos and Eugenio Lopez on February 2 and April 20, respectively. The pride of Puerto Rico’s only blemishes on his sterling record have come from Salido, who scored world title victories over Lopez in 2011 and 2012. Lopez earned his first world title by knocking out defending WBO junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the first round of their June 2008 fight. After five successful title defenses – four by knockout – he vacated the title and successfully challenged WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano, stopping him in the seventh round, on January 28, 2010, at Madison Square Garden. He successfully defended his featherweight crown twice during his 15-month reign with an exciting second-round TKO of Bernabe Concepcion and an eighth-round TKO of two division world champion Rafael Márquez.

Undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs) of Oxnard, Calif., former WBO junior featherweight and WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel “JuanMa” Lopez (33-2, 30 KOs), of Caguas, Puerto Rico will be squaring off in a title fight which will take place on Saturday, June 15 and will be televised live from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Garcia and JuanMa will be hosting a press conference this Thursday,  May 9, beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT,  at the American Airlines Center (2500 Victory Ave., Dallas, TX 75219) to officially announce the fight. Two-time heavyweight champion George Foreman and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum will also be in attendance.

This will mark the first time HBO has ever broadcast a fight from the American Airlines Center.  The Garcia – Lopez world championship event will be promoted by Top Rank®, in association with PR Best Boxing, Foreman Boys Promotions and Tecate.

Garcia vs. Lopez would have been a real mouth-watering fight a couple of years ago. Of course, Top Rank took its time giving Garcia his shot, and since then, we all know what’s happened to JuanMa, being knocked out twice. Garcia now holds JuanMa’s former belt, which he lost to Orlando Salido.

This almost feels as if they’re feeding their once cash-cow to their next up and coming star. But we don’t really know how Mikey will respond to the offense and power of Lopez, so there’s definitely still some intrigue and excitement here. Their two styles should mesh well to produce a fun fight, too.

CHELO_GONZALEZ_BRITISH_MEDIA_DAY_04

(Photo credit: PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) will be making his third defense of his World Boxing Organization 135 pound title this Saturday night against the big punching Jose A Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

The 30-year-old Burns will be getting his first taste of power since his clinch-filled 12 round decision over Michael Katsidis two years ago in London.

Since then, Burns has had two easy fights against light hitters Kevin Mitchell and Paulus Moses. Gonzalez, 29, is a much bigger puncher than Katsidis or Burns’ biggest hitting opponent to date Roman Martinez, and he’s got huge, huge power in either hand.

Gonzalez, from Puerto Rico, can punch right through guards, so if Burns is going to employ the rope and dope strategy that he used in his fight against Katsidis then I’m afraid he’s going to take a tremendous amount of punishment because you really can’t block Gonzalez’s shots because the power that he has.

The only way to try and survive against Gonzalez is to duck, dodge and run from him because if he hits you anywhere on your body you’re going to be in serious trouble.

Gonzalez is definitely the biggest puncher in the lightweight division by far and that includes WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

I expect that Burns will use his old arm bar and clinch techniques to keep from getting nailed by Gonzalez, but I don’t think it’s going to work.

I’ve seen some of Gonzalez’s fights where his opponents tried to hold down one of his arms the way that Burns likes to do and he kept nailing them with HUGE right hands.

Gonzalez is able to generate tremendous power even in close, so grabbing and holding one of his arms isn’t going to save Burns from punishment.

Likewise, using excellent clinches to try and tie Gonzalez up won’t work as well because he works during clinches. He doesn’t just give up passively and let his opponents survive or get rest breaks from his punishment.

Gonzalez is coming into this fight with a four-fight knockout streak that dates back to 2011. He’s stopped Alejandro Rodriguez, Oscar Cuero, Joseph Laryea and Hevinson Herrera in impressive fashion.

Burns is going to have problems taking his shots because he tends to like to slug with his opponents, but with Gonzalez you can’t do that because he hits so incredibly hard. He’ll literally punch a giant hole through Burns if he tries to slug with him.

In his most recent fight, Gonzalez won a seventh round TKO over Alejandro “Soma” Rodriguez, who was hurt and didn’t continue the fight starting that round, in a show presented on February 2, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

In Burns, a Scottish idol who is going to defend his 135 pounds belt for the third time, Gonzalez will find a former junior lightweight champion who beat Puerto Rican Roman “Rocky” Martinez (actually champion again) in 2010 to gain the crown that defended three times. Burns come off a fourth round TKO win over Kevin Mitchell in September, 2012.

“Burns is a slick fighter, a boxer who throws a lot of punches and very tricky, but I’m very focused on do what I have to do to win this fight and to bring the title to Puerto Rico,” Gonzalez said.

BY ISAAC OLAMIKAN –

World Boxing Organisation (WBO) International light middleweight champion, King Davidson Emenogu will face Egyptian opponent, Abdumonem for his world title defence bout holding Friday, May 31 in Abuja.

The Egyptian boxer maintains high profile record at the light middleweight category, wining 10 out of 10 bouts without any career loss. According to reports gathered from London, the WBO officials picked the Egyptian to match the Nigerian for size because of his intimidating record.

Speaking with King Davidson on expectation against the Egyptian opponent for the May 31 bout in Abuja, he said: “I am not intimidated by his record, all I am concerned about is to be in right shape for the fight, then everybody would see that I am good to go.

He has a nerve wrecking record no doubt about that; and the fight is about one month away. I am back in training, I don’t want to sound being overconfident, but all I’m going to say now basically is the end would justify the means.”

Other bouts expected to light up the occasion include, super middleweight contest between Steve Bendal of the United Kingdom against Isaac Ekpo of Nigeria, while middleweight category is between Jake Goshing also from United Kingdom and Ayi Ayite from Ghana.

The welterweight boxing bout is between Joseph Pigford of the United Kingdom against Pelumi Sodubi from Nigeria, while the featherweight contest is an all Nigerian affair between Dare Oyewole and Waidi Usman.

Su-Yu-Hong Champion

Jinju, KOREA–World Boxing Organization (WBO) female minimumweight world champion Su-Yun Hong of South Korea impressively retained her world crown with a fifth round technical knockout victory here over game Thai challenger Kuanern OneSongchai Gym.

The win improved Hong’s unblemished record to 8 wins with 1 KO in her first defense of the world title he won by dethroning another Thai Teeraporn Pannimit last year in Macao, China.

“The champion proved too much. She was just too good today,” said fight supervisor Leon Panoncillo in an interview at ringside, after the referee stopped the bout sensing the Thai was in clear danger had the fight dragged on.

OneSongchai Gym took the first round by outboxing the tentative reigning champion, but as soon as the second round started, Hong took off like a house on fire, taking the challenger to school with a variety of shots to the head and body.

The Thai’s trainer Michael Du, in a separate interview, said his fighter was in no shape to continue, and accepted the referee’s fine verdict.

This city hopes to promote more WBO fights in the future, and most likely, prodigious Korean banger Mino Kim will be tapped to headline the next event.

“The WBO is made up of very professional officials and supervisor. We want to have their belt. The officials don’t give us any problem, and they are always on time for scheduled meetings and other activities. The best so far,” said Korean Boxing Commission’s Aaron Jang.
