The countdown has begun, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is now set for May 2nd and the two fighters will meet in the ring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Even though it took over five years to come together, boxing fans are still looking forward to what will be the biggest fight in boxing history. Besides the fans and media, sports books have also been eagerly awaiting this bout as it’s sure to bring a new wave of bettors looking to make some money placing a bet on their favorite boxer. For those who can’t make it out of Vegas to lay their bets, here is a guide showing how easy online betting can be http://www.gamblingsites.com/sports-betting/online/.

Floyd Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) opened as a -240 betting favorite, while Manny Pacquiao is currently listed at +200 underdog. Regardless of the betting line, most fans are split down the middle on who they believe will win this fight, as Mayweather has shown some signs decline in recent years, while Pacquiao has looked as dominant as ever in his last few bouts. Mayweather, who turns 38 tomorrow, has been hit more in his last two bouts than people are used to seeing and his footwork has appeared to slow down. Pacquiao, who is now 36, still looks to have the same speed and athleticism that made him an eight division world champion.

While the years have brought the two fighters closer in terms of ability in the ring, Floyd Mayweather will still carry in a tactical advantage as he is one of the best defensive fighters in the sport and certainly one of the best counter punchers — something that has caused issues for Pacquiao in the past in his four bouts with Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao on the other hand is one of the fastest, most athletic fighters Floyd has faced, and also brings a southpaw style that has shown to give Mayweather some issues, as was evident early in his fight with Zab Judah.

Beyond the strengths of both fighters, this bout stands to break the box office records, as currently the PPV record holder is Mayweather-De La Hoya at 2.4 million, and the upcoming Mayweather-Pacquiao bout is expect to shatter that with over 3 million PPV buys. The event truly will be the Super Bowl of boxing, and rewards for each fighter go beyond the belts that they will win in the fight. Mayweather currently holds the WBC/WBA welterweight belts and Pacquiao has the WBO welterweight strap, three of the four belts will be unified with the winner, but the real reward will be the estimated $120 million and $80 million pay checks Mayweather and Pacquiao are set to make, respectively.

The fight is now less than ten weeks away, and there will be no promotional tour, and no 24/7 series to promote it. All the promotion that this fight has ever needed was the names Mayweather and Pacquiao, and now that both have signed on the dotted line, the only thing left to do is to see these two titans of this generation step in the ring and decide once and for all, who really is the best boxer in the world today.

VALCARCEL. 1.28.15

By Chris Williams: In yet another case of the skepticism that abounds in the boxing world about whether the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao fight will take place, WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel says he has his doubts whether the May 2nd mega-fight between these two superstars will take place.

Valcarcel thinks the negotiations has too many paths where it can be blocked, one of which is the HBO-Showtime negotiations.

“You have too much stuff all around the board that have to be agreed too; Showtime, HBO, promoters and all kinds of things. I have my doubts that the fight will take place,” said Valcarcel via Fighthype.com.

I believe the fight will take place, because it’s in the best interest of all parties that it happens. HBO and Showtime obviously don’t want to miss out on this mega-fight taking place, because it could very well be the last time they get a chance to put this fight on. Further, it’s not as if the same negotiation points won’t be there later on if HBO and Showtime decide to kick the can down the road to September to try and get the fight made.

The problems that are there now in terms of the rebroadcast rights for the fight will still be there in September. And if the idea is to wait until Mayweather is no longer under contract with Showtime in 2016, I have a feeling that Mayweather will re-sign with Showtime rather than become a free agent and sign with HBO.

I think the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight will mean less in 2016 than it does now because both fighters will be a year older, and there’s a chance that one or both of them will look less than impressive in their next two fights in 2015 if they take on high quality opposition.

Pacquiao has things easier in my view because his promoter Bob Arum has been putting him in with soft touches in Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley and Chris Algieri recently ever since he was knocked cold by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012.

I don’t expect for Arum to suddenly start putting Pacquiao in with guys that would have a chance to beat him like Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Kell Brook and Keith Thurman. I see Arum instead putting Pacquiao in with one of his Top Rank stable fighters like Jessie Vargas in his next fight on May 30th, and then after that I can definitely see Brandon Rios being trotted out again for a second fight against Pacquiao.

Arum will likely say that Rios has been improved because of his win over Mike Alvarado and whoever Arum puts Rios in with in his next fight. I don’t see Rios being improved, but I see him being matched against guys that are beatable and that make him look good in comparison like Alvarado did.

This is the best chance to make the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight happen, and it would be a shame if the parties don’t iron out their differences. Mayweather is the A-side in the negotiations, so there’s no reason why he and Pacquiao can’t agree to the full terms for the fight. The only thing that could potentially trip up the fight is if HBO and Showtime fail to agree. That’s only thing that I can see stopping this fight unless we get some stubbornness setting in with one of the fighters failing to give.

A resolution commending the recent victory of Filipino boxing pride Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao against American boxer Chris Algieri was filed in the Senate Tuesday.
In Senate Resolution 1028, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said Pacquiao further solidified his position as one of boxing’s greatest fighters ever with his outstanding fight, dominating it from start to finish, against Algieri in Macau last Sunday.
“Pacquiao, who stands only 5 feet and 6 1/2 inches proved that with strong faith, tireless hard work, continued discipline, insistent determination, and proper motivation, it is not impossible to dominate and defeat a taller, younger and heavier opponent,” Angara said.
He said the 35-year old pound-for-pound king remains to be the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Champion after knocking down six times and defeating Algieri with a clear unanimous 12-round decision, improving his boxing record to 57 wins, 38 knockouts, 5 losses and 2 draws.
“Pacquiao’s extraordinary accomplishments became, in the process, an inspiration to the ordinary Filipino people, demonstrating the possibility to overcome tremendous odds and lead life in a positive and productive direction,” the senator said.
Angara, who chairs the committee on games, amusement and sports, noted that continually expressing the sense of the Senate for each of Pacquiao’s conquest is never an insignificant exercise.
“The Pambansang Kamao has brought much inspiration, pride, and honor to the whole Filipino nation despite his humble beginnings and is indeed a testament to the Filipino and the world the unrelenting spirit of every Filipino to face with ardor and dignity all challenges that come to their lives,” he said.
He said Pacquiao has long transcended boxing, and is one of the most recognizable sports icons throughout the world.
“He deserves to be once again commended for being an icon of sportsmanship, fortitude, perseverance and remarkable humility despite his unprecedented achievements of being an eight-division world boxing champion,” Angara said.
“In victory as well as in defeat, the Filipino people have celebrated and cried with Pacquiao. In this recent victory, national pride as a Filipino, a key ingredient in nation building, is strengthened,” he added.  Amita Legaspi/RSJ, GMA News

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) scored a one-sided unanimous decision over previously unbeaten WBO jr welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) on Sunday at the Cotai Arena inside the Venetian Resort in Macao, China. Pacquiao stalked Algieri the whole fight, while Algieri backpedaled and tried to box from outside. An Algieri slip in round two was credited as a knockdown for Pacquiao. Pacman scored two more knockdowns in round six. Pacquiao floored Algieri two more times in round nine, Algieri barely survived. Algeria went down for the sixth time at the end of round ten. Scores were 119-103, 119-103, 120-102. Pacquiao’s last KO was against Miguel Cotto more than five years ago.

Manny Pacquiao used the momentum of his career-best six knockdowns Sunday to launch a renewed push for a much-anticipated fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

“For me, the fans deserve to see that fight,” Pacquiao told the Los Angeles Times in the post-fight news conference. “It’s time to see that happen. People can prepare for it early next year.”

While there are significant negotiations to get through after multiple efforts have failed, Pacquiao’s performance in knocking down New York’s previously unbeaten Chris Algieri in a World Boxing Organization welterweight title fight again heightens interest in a potential bout between the best two boxers of the last decade.

“Manny Pacquiao is a great champion, and when he prepares for a fight, there’s nobody better, nobody who can come close to beating him,” Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said.

“If boxing is to be considered a major sport, the fight has to happen.”

Some of the luster on the showdown was lost when Pacquiao suffered a 2012 knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez, and Mayweather proceeded to become the 2013 fighter of the year.

Then Sunday happened, when Pacquiao fought with a visible thirst for the knockout, following up hurtful blows with more devastating punishment and sending Algieri to the canvas in the second round, twice more in both the sixth and ninth rounds, and again in the 10th.

“He’s a great fighter, his experience really showed,” Algieri said. “His adjustments were flawless.”

Pacquiao said belting the former junior-welterweight world champion Algieri so frequently he forced him to “get down and up six times” emboldens the champion to call out Mayweather.

“I want that fight … before I was the only one talking about that fight,” Pacquiao said later in the news conference. “The other [side was] denying to talk about it, so it was [best] to say nothing.

“Now, the fight, it has to happen.”

Fight time is near for Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri, but there are no big theatrical displays coming from either camp.

Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri haven’t had any trash to talk, and their teams aren’t trying to bait one another. Maybe that’s all for the best. This Saturday’s HBO pay-per-view main event from Macau will feature the established superstar Pacquiao defending his WBO welterweight title against unbeaten but little-known Algieri, and promoters and the fighters are hoping the fight will sell itself.

Top Rank’s Bob Arum thanked both sides for their participation in the fight’s promotion, even calling Algieri (20-0, 8 KO), whom he does not promote, “a hell of a guy.” The sides have been friendly, which will go away to some degree on Saturday, of course. It is a fight, after all.

Algieri, 30, continued to say that his training camp has been excellent, and that he’s ready to win the fight, as he has done every time out thus far in his pro career. The former kickboxing champion scored two career-best wins this year over Emmanuel Taylor and Ruslan Provodnikov, and now looks to make an argument for himself as the Fighter of the Year.

Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KO) was his usual soft-spoken self, thanking sponsors, promoters, his team, his trainer, his opponent, that team, and his sparring partners, this time Viktor Postol, Mike Jones, and Jose Ramirez. The 35-year-old Pacquiao is the favorite for the fight, and expects to come out victorious once again.

Also featured on the card will be Zou Shiming (5-0, 1 KO) vs Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym (27-0-2, 12 KO); Vasyl Lomachenko (2-1, 1 KO) vs Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (52-1, 33 KO) for Lomachenko’s WBO featherweight title; and Jessie Vargas (25-0, 9 KO) vs Antonioi DeMarco (31-3-1, 23 KO) in a 12-round junior welterweight bout.

Buboy Fernandez, the assistant coach for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), says Pacquiao is training to attack challenger Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) with nonstop punches in their fight on November 22nd at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Pacquiao will be looking to wash over Algieri like a Tsunami next month in their HBO pay-per-view televised fight on Championship Boxing.

Buboy figures that the all-out attacking style of fighting for the 35-year-old Pacquiao could produce a knockout early if the slender Algieri chooses to slug with him. Why Algieri would do that is unknown, because if he watched his last fight against Ruslan Provodnikov, you can see that Algieri was moving constantly and not mixing it up.

“We are training him for more head movements, more punching combinations and a non-stop assault,” Buboy said to Philboxing.com. “We expect a bigger and taller Algieri to run around the ring. We should be ready for that. But, just in case, Algieri decides to mix it up then much better. The fight would end earlier.”

Pacquiao always fights the same pretty much. If Buboy’s plan for Pacquiao to beat Algieri is for him to go and throw nonstop combinations then he’d better come up with a good plan-B, because that’s a style that is more suited towards stationary fighters like Brandon Rios rather than movers like Algieri.

You’d hate to think that Pacquiao will be spending 7 weeks working on trying to storm a stationary foe by throwing 100 punches per round. What Buboy and Pacquiao need to be work on is trying to cut off the ring against movers like Algieri. Pacquiao looked horrible each time Tim Bradley used any kind of movement in their fight last April, as he showed no improvement in cutting off the ring from their first fight. Pacquiao was able to beat Bradley only because he chose to stand and trade instead of using movement like he did in their first fight.

“We will employ non-stop pressure. Our fighting congressman will chase him wherever he goes. Then try to throw three to five punching combinations to the head and body,” Fernandez said.

Pacquiao’s ability to cut off the ring could be hampered by his tendency to cramp up when he moves a lot. If he gets a case of cramps against Algieri on November 22nd then it’s quite possible that Algieri is going to box circles around him.

I’m not sure that the judges will give Algieri a decision no matter how good he looks, but he sure will make Pacquiao look every bit the loser if he can’t cut off the ring. It almost doesn’t matter if Algieri gets robbed. If he can make Pacquiao fight like he has two left feet like Bradley did in 2012 then the boxing public will ignore any decision handed down by the judges and see Algieri as the winner.

“I am glad and happy to fight again in Macao. It’s good for us to promote boxing in Asia and China,” eight division world champion and reigning WBO welterweight champion Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) told Fightnews.com on Wednesday. Pacman is set to take on WBO junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) on November 22 in the Cotai Arena at the Venitian Hotel in Macao, China live on HBO Pay per view.

We caught up with Pacquiao in Los Angeles at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. The international tour started in Macao, then made stops in Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and will wrap today in New York. “The tour has been good. It’s been really fun. After this we’ll start to train,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao will begin his training camp with his longtime trainer Freddie Roach in Pacquiao’s hometown of General Santos City in the Philippines. This will be the second time in three fights that Pacquiao trains in the Philippines. “Training will be for about eight weeks we will know what to work on in preparation for this fight,” Pacquiao said. “It’s the same, it depends where you are fighting. In Macao it’s the same weather and time as the Philippines. If the fight was in the U.S then it’s good to train in LA at the Wild Card.”

In his previous fight, The Pacman avenged his controversial loss to Timothy Bradley Jr. “Before the second fight with Bradley I never thought of it as revenge. I just proved that I won the first fight,” Pacquiao said.

In Algieri’s his previous contest he dethroned Ruslan Provodnikov and win the WBO junior welterweight title. “The fight was very close he won the fight and he deserves it,” Pacquiao commented. “He got knocked down twice and came back. Let’s give him credit.”

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach also trains Provodnikov and was in the corner for the Algieri fight. “I think Ruslan did enough to keep the title. It was a close fight. That’s the way things go. It could have gone either way,” Roach told Fightnews.com

The Long Island native stands at 5’10 and uses his height and reach to his advantage. The size difference between him and Pacquiao was obvious. “It’s nothing new for me to fight a taller opponent. I am not alarmed about that,” Pacquiao said.

Roach added “He is left handed and leads with the power hand. He has a good jab. We’ll be prepared to take that jab from him. We will have the right sparring partners, a bunch of tall guys.”

pac-alg-la-presser680

Pacquiao also talked to us about his desire of a rematch and fifth fight with his rival Juan Manuel Marquez. “You know I wanted the Marquez fight and they declined. We then went after the next best opponent,” Pacquiao said.

There have also been reports in recent days of a possible showdown with junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia later down the line. Pacquiao assured that the focus is currently set on Algieri. “Any fighter has a chance to fight with me but right now I have to focus on my upcoming fight with Algieri,” Pacquiao stated.

Pacquiao vs. Algieri will be a scheduled 12 round championship fight for Pacquiao’s WBO welterweight title. This will be Pacquiao’s 18th appearance on HBO PPV since bursting on to the scene with a sixth round TKO over Lehlohonolo Ledwaba back in 2001. As he went on to be a superstar scoring big wins over Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, and Timothy Bradley. Pacquiao looks to bring that intensity to the ring that helped him get those notable wins.

“I’m always motivated. I always have the fire in my heart. In my mind I have to continue to be intense,” Pacquiao said. “Expect a lot of action a good fight,” Pacquiao concluded.

Roach said “Don’t be surprised if Algieri runs late in the fight like he did against Ruslan.”

The kickoff press conference for the November 22 clash of champions between WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO jr welterweight champion Chris Algieri took place Monday at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China.

“This fight is going to be a good fight,” promised Pacquiao. “Algieri is undefeated, he’s a good boxer, I saw his last fight with Ruslan. He took a lot of punches but he’s a very tough boxer and fought back…my opponent is tough and I like that. The last fight that we had here with Brandon Rios we did a good job, but Algieri’s different than Rios. He’s faster than Rios, he’s taller than Rios, so it will give me a hard time.

“It’s been a long time that the fans of Manny Pacquiao have been expecting a knockout. This fight I’m going to try to do my best to make the fans happy and if the knockout comes it’ll come, but what I’m trying to do is focus and win the fight.”

Algieri was very gracious toward the Pacquiao Team for accepting the fight and stated he deserved this chance. “I earned the right to be here,” said Algieri, who is significantly taller than Pacman. “I bled for this. I trained for this my whole life. This opportunity means the world to me. I’m going to prepare myself the best I possibly can…I will give it my absolute all, just like I showed in my last fight and every fight before that.”

Pacquaio’s trainer Freddie Roach said Manny’s training camp will be held in General Santos City, Philippines. “I know Chris has a master’s degree,” commented Roach. “But Manny has a Ph.D in boxing.”

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and WBO jr welterweight champion Algieri will announce their November 22 world championship fight during a two-week 27,273-mile international media tour, which kicked off Monday with a press conference at the fight location, The Venetian Macao. The tour will include stops in Shanghai, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT. If you plan on attending live, tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. August 29 (details later in this report).

Manny Pacquiao: “Chris Algieri fought an exceptional fight in June to win the world title from Ruslan Provodnikov. I am impressed and intrigued by his scientific approach to training and boxing. He may be the smartest and the fittest athlete I have ever faced and that makes him the most dangerous. I worked hard to reclaim my welterweight title and I will work harder to make sure I keep it on November 22. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bring glory to the Philippines. ”

Chris Algieri: “It is a real honor to fight a future Hall of Famer like Manny Pacquiao and I am looking forward to being introduced to a whole new market and fan base in the Far East. My last fight against Ruslan Provodnikov got the world’s attention, now I am going to show what I can really do. I have the utmost respect for Manny and his great team, but make no mistake — I am here to win and I have nothing on my mind but beating a legend.”

Pacquiao Trainer Freddie Roach: “I underestimated Algieri when he faced Ruslan Provodnikov in June but I won’t make that mistake again. I hope he understands that this is a fight and not a marathon. Algieri is going to face the best of Manny Pacquiao because Manny is going to have his toughest training camp ever. I am looking forward to a great fight and Manny’s finest hour on November 22.”

Algieri Trainer Tim Lane: “Over the past 14 years I have trained and watched Chris become a Master of the Art of Boxing. His hard work ethic, discipline and dedication are second to none. Chris has been in the gym after only one week off from his last bout with New York trainers Keith Trimble, Dr. Mike Camp and Tony Ricci who have kept him in great shape through the years and continue to help him get stronger and faster between and during all camps. Training camp will officially start in late September in New York and finish in Las Vegas before leaving for China. Let it be known, there is a New ERA in the world of boxing and on November 22. Chris Algieri will once again Shock the World and become the New WBO Welterweight Champion!”

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum: “The battle between the two world champions will be a fantastic fight. Manny’s non-stop attack style will be challenged by Algieri’s laser-like punching.”

Algieri’s promoter Joe DeGuardia: “It has been a great year. In February we had Chris at The Paramount on ESPN, in June on HBO winning the World Championship at Barclays Center in dramatic fashion against the feared Ruslan Prodvodnikov. Now we are excited to announce that he will be at The Venetian Macao against legendary Manny Pacquiao on HBO Pay-Per-View. It has been an unprecedented meteoric rise that will continue on November 22. I look forward to this intriguing and ‘landscape-changing’ fight.”

Edward Tracy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sands China Ltd: “Sands China is thrilled to be bringing Manny back to Macao again to fight at the Cotai Arena this November. Since Manny’s sold-out Venetian Macao debut in November 2013, we’ve worked continuously with Bob Arum and Top Rank to host three more successful boxing cards at the Cotai Arena and two live screening events of US cards; and further, announced our partnership on the mainland China television program ‘Fist Power – Fight to Win.’ We’re happy to see these events helping promote the growth of boxing in the region while raising the profile of Macao as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”

Mark Taffet/HBO Pay-Per-View: “Against all odds, Manny Pacquiao has produced a brilliant, Hall of Fame career. He’s accepted challenges around the globe and established new frontiers, including fighting on pay-per-view from Macao. Now another young, talented and unassuming prizefighter named Chris Algieri will try to defy the odds and fulfill his dreams by challenging Pacquiao for his welterweight crown. In Chris Algieri, fight fans see a great American story with added intrigue based on the heart and courage he displayed in his recent victory over Ruslan Provodnikov.”

Manny-Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight is considered as a “life-long dream” for opponent Chris Algieri as the WBO light welterweight champion opts to rely on his conditioning as he faces the eight-division world champion.

Manny Pacquiao’s next fight is scheduled for November 22, in what is considered to be Asia’s boxing Mecca, the Cotai Arena in Macau, China. While “Pacman” is coming off a definitive victory against Tim Bradley in April to recapture the WBO welterweight title, Chris Algieri is also fresh off a victory against hard-hitting Ruslan Provodnikov.

In an interview with HBO Boxing’s Jim Lampley, the undefeated New York boxer is still in awe that he is able to fulfill his life-long dream of facing a fighter like Manny Pacquiao.

“This is probably the millionth and one time, and now we’re here,” said Algieri, when asked about how many times he has entertained the thought of being in a pay-per-view main event.

Chris Algieri is a 14-1 underdog for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight, despite his undefeated slate. Many fans and media members alike have already predicted a Pacquiao victory, inclduing former rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

“He barely has a chance to win,” Marquez said in an interview with Boxingscene. “Algieri is strong and he’s durable. He also has boxing ability as shown against Ruslan Provodnikov but he doesn’t have the style to beat Pacquiao- who has great speed and power.”

“I believe that (Pacquiao) can win by knockout,” he added.

But Chris Algieri believes that it will not be as easy as how most people think it would be, as he promises to be the best fighter that he can be come fight night.

“I’m going to be an entirely different fighter when I fight Manny Pacquiao,” Algieri declared. “I’m different every time I fight, and I train specifically for my opponents, so we’re going to have a perfect game plan for Manny.”

Chris Algieri also revealed that he would be relying on his conditioning to hopefully get an edge against the eight-division world champion.

“I’m gonna use my conditioning to push the pace and set a pace that he is not used to at this point of his career and look to dominate down the stretch,” Algieri said.

Manny Pacquiao versus Chris Algieri is a done deal.

Algieri and his co-promoters, Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing and Banner Promotions’ Artie Pelullo, met for several hours on Tuesday and hammered out their remaining issues, resulting in an agreement that will see Algieri, a junior welterweight titleholder, get the opportunity to challenge Pacquiao for his welterweight world title.

The fight will take place Nov. 22 (HBO PPV) at the Cotai Arena at the Venetian Macao in Macau, China, where Pacquiao also fought in November 2013 and easily outpointed Brandon Rios, the promoters told ESPN.com.

“I have to talk to my lawyer, Dan Pancheri, who will spit out the contracts first thing (Wednesday) morning so they can have a copy of it in the afternoon,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said Tuesday night. “We have a deal. On my end, it wasn’t a hard deal at all. I came up pretty much with what they were looking for and then Joe and Artie had to sit down with Algieri and cut it up fairly amongst themselves.”

HBO Boxing After Dark at The Barclays Center.

That is what Algieri, DeGuardia and Pelullo did for most of the day.

“We had a marathon lunch. We started out meeting in the morning, then went and had a long lunch together, came back to the office and finished it up,” DeGuardia said. “I called Bob to tell me we have a deal on our end. All the terms have been reached with Top Rank and we’re going to paper it up.

“We were able to sit down and go through everything Chris wanted to go over and put everything together. He’s gonna beat Pacquiao.”

Terms were not disclosed but DeGuardia said Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs) will earn a career-high payday of more than $1 million. It will be more than 10 times his previous biggest purse, which was $100,000 for his upset split decision win against Ruslan Provodnikov to win a junior welterweight world title on June 14 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Eleven months ago the 30-year-old Algieri was unknown and not even fighting regularly on televised cards. Now he is fighting one of the most famous fighters on the planet for a world title and a seven-figure payday.

“He’s very happy. He’s happy for the opportunity,” DeGuardia said. “I’m ecstatic we’ve been able to give him this. It’s a great feeling. You work hard you develop him up the ranks. He fought off TV for a long time, he got on TV and now this. It’s really rewarding to see him get this opportunity and a payday that will change his life.

“He’s wants the fight and has no problem going up in weight. He wants the welterweight championship. He wants challenges. He loves the idea. He wanted to fight for another championship and he loves that he is fighting Manny Pacquiao for it. He looks as Manny as an elite of the game. He wants to climb another mountain. If he wins this fight, you have the start of another era.”

Algieri, from the Long Island, New York, town of Huntington, got knocked down twice by Provodnikov in the first round and persevered through a grotesquely swollen right eye for most of the fight. He also has a background different from most boxers.

A former kickboxer, Algieri grew up in a middle class family, went to college and eventually earned a master’s degree. He says he wants to go to medical school when he is done with his boxing career. He also works as a nutritionist.

“I think it’s an interesting fight between him and Manny,” Arum said. “I’m excited. This is a college-educated kid, a good boxer, the kind of kid who will draw interest other than the just the hard core boxing fan,” Arum said. “And the kid can also fight.”

Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs), the 35-year-old Filipino icon, has won world titles in a record eight weight classes. On April 12 in Las Vegas, Pacquiao convincingly outpointed Timothy Bradley Jr. to regain the welterweight title he had lost to Bradley in June 2012 in a fight in which Bradley received a split decision in one of the most controversial calls in boxing history.

1397369689000-USP-Boxing-Timothy-Bradley-Jr-vs-Manny-Pacquiao-010

Pacquiao and Arum have had terms in place for his next fight since Pacquiao signed a two-year extension with Top Rank in May that will take him through 2016 with the company that has promoted him since 2005. Although terms for the fight with Algieri were not disclosed, Pacquiao has been making in the $20-million-plus range for recent fights.

Although the business side of Pacquiao’s next fight has been set, he didn’t know who he would be fighting. Arum said Pacquiao called him on Monday morning to check in on his health — Arum is recovering from a recent knee replacement surgery — and they also talked about Algieri since Arum was getting close to a deal.

“Manny is 100 percent for it,” Arum said. “I told him I was coming along with it. He said Algieri seems like a nice young man and he saw his fight with Provodnikov. Manny said he thought it would be a good fight and he was OK with fighting Algieri.”

Pacquiao could be motivated for the fight by wanting to seek revenge for his beloved trainer, Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, who is also Provodnikov’s trainer and was on the losing end of that in that June upset.

Don’t look now, but United States President Barrack Obama, a recent Philippine visitor, must have been expecting to meet Filipino World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao during his two-day stay visit in Manila Monday and Tuesday.

This can be gleaned when President Obama mentioned the name of Pacquiao as one of the many things he and the Filipino nation have in common in his speech while offering a toast to his host, President Nonoy Aquino, during the State dinner held at Malacanang Palace Monday night.

“There is our mutual obsession with basketball, “ President Obama said pertaining to the sport the Filipinos and he love most, he being a former player during his high school days at Panahou University in Hawaii where he grew up.

“There is our admiration for Manny Pacquiao,” he added in reference to the boxing icon, who, three years ago, was his guest at the White House in the course of promoting his fight against Shane Mosley scheduled May 7, 2011.

The American head of state then added rather jokingly: “Even if sometimes. His fight against Americans doesn’t turn out the way we’d like.”

The first U.S. African-American Chief Executive must have still been reminiscing the memorable moment when he and the eight-division world belt owner and himself met face-to-face at his Oval Office talking about basketball, boxing and how they were rendering service to their peoples.

Pacquiao was already a Congressman then representing the lone district of his wife Jinkee’s Province of Sarangani.

Unfortunately, however, Pacquiao was not included to the limited 300 individuals invited to the banquet.

The U.S. President might have, likewise, remembered that for two days, the Philippine flag flew in front of the hay Adams Hotel just across the White House signaling that a very important tenant, who will be meeting him the following day, was staying there.

That on the very same day of his visit, Pacquiao and his entourage created a minor disturbance – a multi-car pile up at the traffic light at the corner of 17th Street where the Filipino fighter was about to cross on the way to his meeting with the most powerful man on the planet.

The reason was passing motorists stopped their cars upon recognizing Pacquiao standing there waiting for the red light and started to wave their hands to greet him, some even snapping their cameras to take photos of the world champ using their cell phones.

Luckily, no one was injured although the minor accident made headlines marking Pacquiao’s tour of the U.S. capital something to remember by.

Pacquiao and wife Jinkee had a chance to meet the President and Vice President Joe Biden over lunch in a private, closed door meeting through the intercession of U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, earning him the distinction of becoming the first reigning world boxing champion to have been invited to the Presidential residence.

When ring legend Muhammad Ali earned the same privilege, he no longer was a titleholder.

With his successful visit to Washington, D.C., Pacquiao was, not only believed to have established himself as a world-class politician, but, likewise, cemented a friendship between him and President Obama.

Before meeting Obama, Pacquiao was guided by Sen. Reid, whom he helped in his re-election bid, to a tour of the White House.

Top Rank bossman Bob Arunm and wife Lovee accompanied the Pacquaios to the White House where they spent 10 minutes with Mr. Obama in the Oval Office and talked about common interest.

“I invited him to my fight (against Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas), but he said he didn’t think he could make it,” Pacquiao was quoted as saying then.

“But he said he would definitely watch the pay-per-view.”

Mr. Obama told Pacquiao he’d visit him in the Philippines, reason why the head of the most powerful nation in the world, indeed, was expecting to renew his friendship with the Filipino boxing icon during his state visit.

While inside the Oval Office, Pacquiao and Jinkee posed for pictures with Obama, who even struck a boxing pose.

“It was very unforgettable moment in my life. Ang taas pala ni President Obama,” Pacquiao, who stands 5-foot-6, told Filipino media men of the 6-3 Obama upon arrival in the country.

Obama gifted Pacquiao three grocery bags full of light blue M&M’s with the Presidential seal, along with a watch, also adorned with his official seal after their memorable meeting.

One-time Muslim rebels, soldiers and refugees united in celebration Sunday as Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao defeated American Timothy Bradley to reclaim the World Boxing Organization welterweight crown in a unanimous decision.

Sok Biruar, a Moro Islamic Liberation Front sub-commander, joined with soldiers from the army’s 6th Infantry Division in the Philippines’ Muslim south to watch Pacquiao avenge his 2012 loss in a unanimous 12-round decision. All around the country, life came to a halt as the fight was broadcast live from Las Vegas, Nevada, in gymnasiums, malls, restaurants, public parks, malls, and main squares.

“This proves that we [the soldiers] and the MILF are already united. That the war is over and we’re sick and tired of conflict,” Biruar said, adding that they’ve enjoyed a good relationship with the army since the signing of a March 27 agreement, which grants Muslim areas greater political autonomy in exchange for an end to armed rebellion.

Pacquiao – or the Pacman, as his legions of fans like to call him – is without doubt the most famous citizen in the Philippines. He grew up in a slum without shoes, and had sold donuts, flowers and fish on the street until an IBF Super Bantamweight title fight in 2001 propelled him to the big time.

Since then he has won 56 fights – ten of them world titles at four different weight classes – drawn five and lost two, earning close to $US700 million in career TV revenue in the process. He became a Congressman and dabbled in singing, politics, acting and cockfighting, before losing his title to Bradley in a split-decision in 2012. Most ringside observers were astonished, judging Pacquiao to have won the fight.

In Zamboanga City, refugees displaced when rival Muslim faction the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) laid siege to the city in September to try and derail the peace talks were also jubilant Sunday, breaking into thunderous applause and chanting “Manny! Mannny!” as Pacquiao’s victory was broadcast on giant screens set up among the tents and temporary housing.

More than 100,000 people forced to flee their homes in the ensuing three weeks of fierce fighting are still housed in the city’s Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial sports complex. Some 200 people were killed in the siege, including soldiers, rebels and civilians.

“We’re so very, very happy… for this moment we are able to forget our problems,” said Kadaf, 26, whose family’s bunkhouse in Barangay Rio Hondo was destroyed during the 23-day standoff between the government forces and the MNLF.

“At least our idol has now proven to the whole world that he is still the king of boxing,” he added.

President Benigno Aquino’s spokesman Herminio Coloma said in a statement Sunday that the nation is united in cheering on Congressman Pacquiao.

“He is the symbol of the excellence of the Filipino in all endeavors,” Coloma added. “Pacquiao’s latest victory is symbolic of the way Filipinos can recover from the worst disasters,” refering to the siege in Zamboanga, Typhoon Yolanda and the Bohol earthquake that struck the country last year, killing thousands.

Pacquiao’s mantra for Sunday’s fight was “my journey will continue.”

He has said he is 80 percent sure he will run for senate in the Philippines in 2016 when his term as a congressman expires.

Although he couldn’t get his first knockout win since 2009, Pacquiao lived up to his pre-fight promise to come out with more aggression, denying Bradley’s avowed aim of sending him into retirement with another defeat.

“I think I can go another two years,” said Pacquiao, who has won world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions. “I’m so happy to be world champion again. Tim Bradley was not an easy fight.”

After a tight first round, Pacquiao made his power felt in the second.

LONDON  – Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao believes his role as challenger in his world title bout with Tim Bradley this weekend will inspire him to victory.

The Filipino superstar has cut a calm and relaxed figure throughout fight week as he looks to avenge his controversial 2012 loss to the Californian Bradley, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

It was the 30-year-old Bradley who wrestled the WBO welterweight championship away from the claws of the eight-weight world champion Pacquiao on that fateful night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

But now, ‘Pacman’ is ready to thrive in his position as the challenger, as he looks to show that he can reach the heights of his illustrious past on his way to winning an unprecedented eleventh world title.

“There are a lot of people who doubt I can fight the same way I fought when I knocked out Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera,” said Pacquiao.

“I want to prove to them that I am the best. I am inspired. I am the challenger. I know I will need to outbox and outspeed Bradley. And that is what I will do. This is the first time I have challenged for a world title that I lost. Do I want it back? You bet I do; and I want it back from Tim Bradley,” he said.

Accusations have been levelled at Pacquiao questioning if he still has the hunger and desire for prizefighting.

The man himself admitted he was too cordial in the initial meeting with Bradley, stating he won’t play the nice guy this time around, with the American needing to lay him out to win.

“The only way Bradley can beat me this time is to knock me out. He cannot outbox me. I will be the aggressor. I will throw a lot of punches at him – more than I threw against [Brandon] Rios – and I will land them,” Pacquiao said.

“Last time I was too nice. This time, I will finish what I start. I want to get back that belt he won off of me. Boxing has always been fun for me. This time the fun is secondary. This is a mission to prove I am the best.

“In my fight against Rios I proved I can still fight at the high level everyone expects from me. I showed I can still control a fight as well as I ever have,” he said.

Juggling his role as a boxer and Congressman back home in the Philippines hasn’t been an easy one for the 35-year-old.

He has seen the progress that Bradley has made over the past two years, overcoming WBO light-welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov and Mexican icon Juan Manuel Marquez, to cement his place amongst the elite in the 147 pound division.

Pacquiao is honest enough to declare he overlooked Bradley the first time, but there will be no chance of that this time around.

“I remember last time believing that I won the first fight against Tim Bradley. I thought I was leading after every round. I thought I won the fight easily. I controlled the fight every round. I had a feeling in training camp that he would run from me once he felt my power and he did after the third or fourth round,” said Pacquiao.

“I was very surprised by the decision. But that’s part of the game. He got the decision and my title. But to be honest, I wasn’t as motivated when I was training for our first fight. I guess I didn’t take him seriously enough,” he said.

“I am impressed with what Bradley has done since our fight. He is a different fighter now since we fought. He has more experience at this level and as a welterweight champion. He fought extremely well against Marquez. I knew Tim would beat him utilizing his speed. But in the end I am still faster than Bradley,” Pacquiao said.

The rematch between the pair kicks-off a mega next couple of months on BoxNation with a host of world title fights including Floyd Mayweather’s ring return against Marcos Maidana on May 3rd, with British star Amir Khan also featuring that night against the skilled Luis Collazo.
