This Saturday night WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (34-2, 9 KO’s) will be making his second defense of his title against fellow Brit Kevin Mitchell (33-1, 24 KO’s) at the Scottish Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

This is going to be hometown advantage for the 29-year-old Burns, although Mitchell fans swear up and down that Mitchell will get a fair shake when it comes to the judging in the fight.

Whatever. I’m not so worried about the judging for the fight. What I’m worried about is the referee keeping control of the action to make sure that Burns doesn’t end up clinching Mitchell into submission. The last couple of fights I’ve seen of Burns have been god awful filled with clinching and dull action. Boring stuff.

Burns’ last fight against Paulus Moses last March was one in which I thought Burns should have been penalized and/or disqualified for all the clinching he did in that fight. What I didn’t understand was why on earth did Burns waste time clinching this guy? It’s not as if Moses had huge knockout power or anything. As far as I can tell the only dangerous thing about Moses was his nice jab. That’s about it. Why clinch a guy repeatedly when the don’t have much power?

Mitchell hasn’t been looking all that great lately. He looked decent in taking out John Murray last year in July in stopping him in the 8th, but then he looked terrible against Felix Lora last February in beating him by a 10 round decision. Lora was landing his pot shots all night long, and Mitchell looked pretty helpless.

So as far as this Saturday night goes, I think Mitchell needs to have his inside fighting skills ready so that he can tag Burns in the puss each time he grabs him in a clinch and tries to smother Mitchell’s offense. That’s how you take care of Burns. You can’t just let him clinch like that without making him pay each time.

Although his record shows several loses, it is important to clarify that eight of those eleven loses came between the ages of 15 and 21. A “journeymen” for many boxing fans, Orlando Salido made his biggest statement with an impressive 8th-round knockout of former undefeated WBO champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez; proving his worth as one of the elites in the featherweight division. In 2004, Salido challenged then WBA/IBF Featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez but came up short, losing by unanimous decision. In 2006, he defeated Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision to claim the IBF Featherweight title, but Salido’s victory was later ruled a “No Contest” because Salido tested positive for steroids after the fight, therefore he was stripped from his title. His third title opportunity came against Cristobal Cruz for the vacant IBF

Featherweight title. Once again, Salido came up short, losing by split decision. But in 2010, he avenged his loss by defeating Cruz in the rematch by unanimous decision, and claimed the IBF Featherweight title. Five months later, he lost a unanimous decision against Cuban sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa, but was quickly able to bounce back by defeating Juan Manuel Lopez to claim the WBO featherweight title. After two successful title defenses, Salido once again went to Puerto Rico and defeat Juan Manuel Lopez by TKO in the tenth round in their rematch on March 10.

WORLD TITLES:

1. IBF Fetherweight Champion (twice)

2. WBO Featherweight Champion (twice)

On November 10th, WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido (39-11-2, 27 KO’s) will be defending his title against #1 WBO Mikey Garcia (29-0, 25 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also on the card will be unbeaten #3 WBC junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan (32-0, 20 KO’s) facing would could turn out to be his first loss of his career against #2 WBC Erislandy Lara (17-1-1, 11 KO’s) in a WBC 154 pound final eliminator bout.

Mikey Garcia, 24, is totally unproven and hasn’t looked all that great in terms of skills in his fights against mostly 3rd tier opposition. Garcia has good power, but really bad ring habits. He doesn’t really throw combinations, doesn’t throw many punches, and mostly loads up with his single shots. He’s got power but not much more than Salido, who throws a lot more punches and is much more versatile. Garcia fights like he’s so stiff, and he’s going to have big time problems against Salido when he doesn’t fall down from Garcia’s single power shots.

Garcia has beaten Juan Carlos Martinez, Bernabe Concepcion and Maurcio Pastrana in his last three fights. In other words, journeyman level opposition. He’s not fought anyone that could really test him and he’s picked up a lot of bad habits because of his weak opposition.

I’d be surprised if Garcia makes it six rounds against Salido. He’s just not in the same league as him and needs to learn how to fight the proper way. Hopefully, after Garcia gets knocked out by Salido he can get a new trainer and learn how to fight properly because he reminds me of the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz. He’s incredibly stiff.

Martirosyan is a Freddie Roach trained fighter who hasn’t fought anyone that you could call talented. His toughest fight came against Kassim Ouma in January 2010, and he won a controversial 10 round decision in that fight. Many boxing fans still feel that Martirosyan deserved to lose that fight. He’s gone backwards from that fight facing steadily weaker and weaker opposition up until this fight with Lara.

A celebration breakfast took place recently following the success of Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan on winning the WBO International Middleweight Boxing Title.

The breakfast was hosted by the Sub Contactors Association of Ireland at the Il Primo Restaurant at the Silver Key. Gary’s family as well as officials of the Ex-Boxers Association and representatives from various sporting and community groups were all in attendance.

The guests were warmly welcomed by Michael O’Brien,  Director of the Irish Sub Contractors Association, and in his address Mr O’Brien said the achievement of Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan was both Historical and unique in that no Cork Boxer had ever won a WBO Title.

This title was won following a unanimous points victory over Mathew Hall at Upton Park London. Mr O’Brien said:  “Gary had now become a trail blazer on Lifting the WBO title and this was quickly followed by our  own Olympic boxers who succeeded in winning gold, silver and bronze medals.”

Pointing to the World Boxing Association Belt, Mr O’Brien said: “Gary is an inspiration to all and has become a role model and  many youngsters  can  now attempt to emulate his success.”

Receiving a standing ovation the new WBO International Champion approached the podium where Mr Willie O’Leary, President of the Ex-Boxers Association made a presentation to Spike.

Former Lord Mayor of Cork Brian Bermingham who is also Vice President of the Ex Boxers congratulated Gary before announcing details of the various sporting grants being allocated to Cork boxing clubs from the Sports Council of Ireland.

To mark the occasion and as a fitting tribute Gary was presented with a specially commissioned Medal which detailed the historic success.

WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria says the postponement of his planned unification title fight with WBA champion Hernan “Tyson” Marquez from September 29 to November 10 is hard on him.

The postponement was announced by Paolo Diaz, Events & Operations Manager of Solar TV’s sports networks.

Viloria told the Manila Standard  “its kind of  hard for me to keep going at it for four or five months but the break could perhaps help me relax a little bit and not overtrain.”

Viloria who trains at the Wild Card Gym appeared disappointed over the postponement because “training was excellent, was great. I didn’t take that much time off because I ran everyday and did so this morning. My trainer told me do not do anything but why stop and get myself out of shape. I kept myself busy and sneak into the gym.”

Among his strength and conditioning coaches is Marvin Somodio who was recruited from the training camnp of Manny Pacquiao in Baguio City.

The two division world champion said that taking a break “gets monotonous and you get really drained. Its like going to work every day and then getting out of it.”

However, Viloria said “I still feel refreshed and really want to get back to training camp.”

The postponement sits in well with the fact that Freddie Roach has been training Julio Cesar Chavez for his showdown on Saturday against Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and although Roach “merely put in his two cents worth once in a while” it would help.

Viloria has been sparring with an opponent who “is a bigger guy and a left hander and I’m getting solid work in there.”

He said WBA champion “Tyson” Marquez is tough but that he is “confident about this fight. I feel good, feel great. This is a fight I’ve been wanting to happen for a while now and now that its taking shape I’m kind of happy for it.”

Viloria added “I think I have what it takes to beat Marquez.”

CEBU – Rey “BoomBoom” Bautista is not looking past Daniel Ruiz. But he is very much aware that there is something more important at stake besides the vacant WBO International featherweight title. If he wins this fight on October 20, he will get a high world ranking and inch closer towards challenging WBO featherweight world champion Orlando Salido.

“Salido is the champion I would like to face. We are both aggressive fighters and it will be a very exciting match-up.” Bautista told this writer during an informal gathering with Cebu sportswriters Thursday evening.

The 26 year old Bautista (33-2, 25 KO’s) knows he needs to take care of the business at hand. He has studied a fight video of Ruiz and is working hard trying to shake off the ring rust at the ALA gym. Bautista has not had a tough fight since December 10, 2011, when he beat Miguel Mendoza of Mexico at the Hoops Dome. Last March, he fought a patsy when ALA Promotions was duped by their contact in Mexico, Hugo Correa, who sent the fake Genaro Garcia.

Bautista is working on his conditioning and has started light sparring with up and coming boxers at the ALA gym. This October at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, he will be on the undercard of the WBO world bantamweight title fight between his stablemate AJ Banal and Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand.

“I don’t mind fighting as an undercard,” Bautista said, “That will be less pressure on my part that I won’t have to carry the entire card.”

When it comes to his personal finances, Bautista is one of Philippine boxing’s success stories. He now owns a fleet of vans and jeepneys and has purchased land in his native Bohol. But he realizes that he still needs to redeem himself. He has avenged his loss to Heriberto Ruiz but he still thinks about the loss to Daniel Ponce de Leon.

Bautista even said that beating De Leon in a rematch would mean more to him compared to winning a world title. De Leon will be challenging WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzales this September 15 and the outcome will surely interest BoomBoom.

Bautista has won seven straight, six by knockout, since recovering from wrist surgery. He remains one of the Philippines’ more popular boxers but has more than his share of critics.

“I started boxing at nine years old and I thought boxing was just about fighting another guy. I never realized that I would get to talk on the radio and on television and I was required to greet fans and talk to them.” Bautista said, “I was never used to that growing up. Because of that, people misinterpret my actions and accuse me of being boastful.”

For the meantime Bautista will devote his energies to his training. Ruiz (27-5-1, 19 KO’s), from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, lost by 8th round technical decision to Will Tomlinson in an IBO superfeatherweight title bout in Australia in his last fight.

“I noticed he (Daniel Ruiz) counterpunches well,” Bautista said, “But Heriberto Ruiz was better and a more difficult opponent.”

Bautista has always stated his preference for a good old fashioned brawl. This has endeared him to his fans who know they will always get their money’s worth when he fights.

Touch Gloves Stable’s undefeated knockout sensation Jun “Hercules” Doliguez has been training intensively in Agoncillo, Batangas in preparation for his WBO Oriental Title bout with Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales. In as much as Batangas City is very excited for this major boxing event in their home, Doliguez is much more excited about getting a belt for his own and in putting Morales to sleep.

“When I started my boxing career, I only wanted to gather more wins for my record and just keep on winning every fight placed in front of me. I never thought about having a KO victory as a requirement in every fight. But as I worked harder in the gym, I have seen my power immensely improving. I was knocking out opponents left and right and it gave me more confidence. I want to be an exciting fighter just like my idol Manny Pacquiao. For me being a boxer is all about entertainment and I know the fans always want a knockout as much as possible. I know that Ciso Morales is a skilled fighter but I guarantee the fans, Ciso will just be another victim on my knockout list”, Doliguez told philboxing.com.

Saved by the Bell Promotions President Elmer Anuran also expressed his excitement of staging this important event in Batangas City. “I want to give this as a treat to the good people of Batangas City. They love boxing. Our new organization ALA EH (Association of Local Athletics Entrepreneurs and Hobbyists) is also supporting this event for the advancement of local boxing in the province of Batangas. I hope boxing fans will support this fight. Al Sabaupan will also be co-headlining this event. This will be a total sell-out”, Anuran stated.

The Doliguez-Morales WBO Oriental Featherweight match up will be held on October 13, 2012 at the Batangas City Coliseum.

HIGHLIGHT … Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias with Luis Singo (left) from Ecuador and Namibia’s WBO Interim bantamweight African champion Immanuel Naidjala. Photo: Helge Schutz

IMMANUEL ‘Prince’ Naidjala has vowed to knock out Ecuador’s Luis ‘El Gallo’ Singo when they meet in an international non-title bantamweight fight on Saturday night.

Naidjala and Singo came face to face for the first time at a press conference in Windhoek yesterday where Naidjala confidently predicted a knockout.
“I want to welcome my opponent here in Namibia. I’m so grateful that he at least landed here because that was the worry [that he wouldn’t arrive]. I respect him as a man because of his record but as a boxer I don’t respect him at all,” he said.
“One thing I can promise him is that this will be one of his hardest defeats in one of his hardest fights because that day he will have to fall and he will have to fall hard,” he added.
Singo has a lot of experience with a record of 15 wins, 10 defeats and 2 draws, although he is probably past his prime at the age of 37. He has lost his last five fights while his last victory came nearly two years ago in October 2010.
Naidjala is one of Namibia’s hottest boxing prospects and at age 27, will have youth on his side. He is still undefeated after 14 fights and is currently the interim WBO African bantamweight champion, while he is also ranked seventh in the world by the WBO.
Naidjala said he had trained hard for the fight and had worked on some new tactics that he would display in the ring.
“My preparations have gone well. When my promoter told me about this fight I was very excited. It’s one of my biggest fights against a fighter from outside Africa and that alone encouraged me to train harder. The things that we put into this preparation, we haven’t done before and I promise you I’ll be able to show that on Saturday night,” he said.
“I’m just concentrating on the future and him (Singo) being in front of me. I hope he’s fast enough because looking at his age, I don’t know, and I’ll make him a punching bag that day,” he added.
Speaking through an interpreter, Singo thanked Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias and the Namibian people for inviting him to Namibia.
“He has trained very hard and he has already been overseas a couple of times in Europe as well as Latin America where he has fought some good boxers. He will do his best on Saturday night to win the fight so that he can take the victory back to his country,” he’s interpreter said.

SHIHEPO’S TIME

In the main curtain-raiser, Wilbeforce Shihepo will defend his WBO Africa Super Middleweight title against compatriot Johannes Mwetupunga. Shihepo called on his fans to arrive early because he said the fight could be over quickly.
“This is my time to get back on the map again and I’m ready for Saturday. The fans better come in early because whenever I get a chance to catch him, he’ll be gone,” he said.
In another exciting match up, Tommy Hango will face Sackey Shikukutu in a rematch. Hango beat Shikukutu on a split decision on June 9 to win the Namibian welterweight title and this time the two boxers will fight it out for the vacant interim WBO Africa welterweight title over 12 rounds.
“I lost to this guy [Hango] last time, so he was the winner and I want him to prove himself again that he is the real man. Since I made my comeback I have not won a fight. I drew one fight and then lost a fight, so this is my time to mark a win on my record,” Shikukutu said.
There will be four other fights on the undercard. Peter Malakia and Samuel Kapapu will fight for the vacant Namibian lightweight title over 10 rounds, while Sakaria Lukas will fight David Egumbo in a 58kg catchweight fight over four rounds.
Immanuel Andeleki will fight Leonard Shemuvalula in a lightweight fight over four rounds, while Toivo Mukwendje will fight Mathias Johannes in a junior lightweight fight over four rounds.
Tickets cost N$100 per person or N$10 000 per table and are available at Computicket at Shoprite Checkers, at the Namibian Boxing Control Board or at the Windhoek Country Club.

MANILA, Philippines – Miguel Cotto has chosen WBA super-welterweight champion Austin Trout, and not Manny Pacquiao, as his opponent on Dec. 1 at the Madison Square Garden.

This leaves Pacquiao with lesser options – a rematch with WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley or a fourth fight with WBO junior welter king Juan Manuel Marquez.

Since Cotto is fighting on Dec. 1, Pacquiao cannot afford to go head-on with the heavy-handed Puerto Rican who has a very solid fan base and a great pay-per-view history.

Bob Arum, having a real hard time making Pacquiao decide on his next fight, has come up with a new date for the Filipino superstar’s return to the ring. It’s Dec. 8.

Arum had originally penciled Nov. 10 for Pacquiao. But it’s not going to happen. Then came Dec. 1, and it’s not going to happen either because of the Cotto decision.

With Cotto fading out of the picture, Pacquiao is back with two choices.

He can fight Bradley and try to regain the title that was snatched from him via a highly controversial and highly questionable decision by the judges at the MGM Grand.

But if Pacquiao takes on Bradley, he will have to settle for less, especially in the pay-per-view side. Bradley has very little following, even if he is now the champion.

Marquez, on the other hand, offers everything Pacquiao wants – a fighter who doesn’t back out, and one that can provide the pay-per-view numbers.

A fourth fight between Marquez and Pacquiao could easily fetch 1.3 million pay-per-view buys. But it’s a risky one.

In all their three fights, Marquez came close to beating Pacquiao, during a draw in 2004 and two razor-sharp decisions in 2008 and 2011. The law of averages may finally catch up on Pacquiao.

By facing Marquez, Pacquiao will also put his dream of finally facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. at risk. If he fails to impress against Marquez, or worse, if he loses to Marquez, the super-fight may go down the drain.

Former two-time world champion Gerry Peñalosa said Pacquiao will be better off facing Bradley.

“Less risk, easy fight but less money,” said Peñalosa.

“Pacquiao can earn more against Marquez but it’s risky. If he really wants to fight Mayweather next year, he should pick Bradley. Go for the easy fight,” Peñalosa added.

As though the battle for the vacant WBO bantamweight title between No.1 ranked AJ “Bazooka” Banal and No.2 ranked Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand isn’t attractive enough, famed ALA Promotions has put together a blockbuster undercard for the October 20 “Pinoy Pride XVII” at the MOA Arena on Roxas Boulevard.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that popular Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista will clash with Mexico’s Latino super featherweight champion Daniel Ruiz for the WBO International featherweight title while promising Jason Pagara will face off against Commonwealth Zonal champion Miguel “Hands of Stone” Antoine of Barbados for the WBO International junior welterweight crown.

Banal and Pungluang both promised fireworks on fight night with the tough Thai fighter who has disposed of 16 Filipino opponents including such talented boxers as Eden Sonsona and Marvin Tampus predicting he would knock out Banal in four rounds.

Appearing on a pre-fight special taped at the studios of ABS-CBN, Banal shot back that he will KO Pungluang in three rounds before both protagonists agreed to let their fists do the talking in the ring on October 20 and allow the predictions to stand until then.

Bautista (33-2, 25 KO’s) who is coming off a farce of a fight against a fake Genaro Garcia whom he knocked out in the 2nd round last March 3 is the reigning IBF International 126 pound champion having won nthe title with a 6th round knockout of Miguel Angel Mendoza on December 10, 2011.

Ruiz (27-5-1, 19 KO’s) on the other hand, won the vacant WBC Latino super featherweight title with a 2nd round knockout of Ricardo Castillo on December 10, 2011.

In his last fight on May 18 this year Ruiz lost a bizarre 8th round technical decision in an IBO super featherweight title fight to Australia’s Will Tomlinson when the lights went out at the Melbourne Pavilion and since power was not restored, officials decided to award the fight to the Aussie on the basis of the scorecards at the end of the 8th round.

Pagara (29-2, 18 KO’s) is coming off a crushing 6th round TKO victory in a rematch with rugged Mexican veteran Rosbel Montoya last August 18 to win the vacant WBO International title in which he dropped Montoya three times, the last a devastating shot to his upper arm which didn’t allow the Mexican to continue because of severe pain.

Pagara will go up against the undefeated Antoine (17-0-1, 9 KO’s) who won the vacant Commonwealth Zonal title with a ten round unanimous decision over undefeated Mark Austin on February 25, 2011 after which he won the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation lightweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Revlon Lake on February 25, 2012.

This past Sunday, WBO junior welterweight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KOs) held a meeting in Tijuana with promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions. They discussed Marquez’s next ring return in 2012.

The two options include November 10th in a fourth showdown with Manny Pacquiao, either at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas or a venue in Texas. If Pacquiao goes in another direction, then Marquez will make the first defense of his WBO title in early December. Beltran promised Marquez that he would fight before the end of the year. whether it’s against Pacquiao or someone else.

Marquez is waiting for Pacquiao to make a final decision on his next opponent. A decision was expected on Monday, but nothing was finalized.

Later this week, the Mexican champion plans to meet with his coach Nacho Beristain to work out the schedule for their next training camp

When Nonito Donaire defends his IBF and WBO junior featherweight belts in an HBO-televised clash against Japanese southpaw veteran Toshiaki Nishioka, he will be facing a legend.

And Donaire knows full well what is at stake.

“To me, Nishioka is the best. If you want to be the best, you’ve got face the best and try to make the big fights happen. If it doesn’t happen because of money or negotiations, then there’s nothing you can do. But if you’re a fighter, then, to me, you have to find the fighters who can challenge you and who will put you at risk,” said Donaire.

“You put yourself at risk of losing, at risk of getting hurt, at risk of losing your life. That’s all part of boxing and that’s all a part of challenging yourself. It makes you or breaks you. That’s the kind of mentality that you need and the kind of mentality that I try to have.”

A Tokyo resident who turned 36 in July, Nishioka (39-4-3, 24 knockouts) has not lost since falling by unanimous decision to long-reigning WBC bantamweight titleholder and Thai legend Veeraphol Sahaprom in March of 2004 — a span of eight years and five months.

During that time, Nishioka is riding a 16-bout winning streak that includes 10 knockouts and a 12th-round stoppage of Genaro Garcia in January of 2009. The win over Garcia was the first defense of the belt Nishioka earned with a unanimous decision over Napapol Sor Rungvisai in September of 2008.

Although he will be making only his fourth appearance in the United States when he meets Donaire, 29, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on Oct. 13, Nishioka’s skills and familarity with longevity and durability rank him with dignitaries such as 35-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr., 37-year-old Sergio Martinez and 47-year-old Bernard Hopkins.

“Not only does he have speed, power and experience, but he’s also a southpaw. So there are a lot of factors as far as his style that I have not seen in other opposition,” said Donaire.

“With his being a southpaw, I’ve not seen this much of a combination of that and other things about his skills all in one fighter and who is a left-hander like Nishioka. I mean, he’s strong and he’s fast and he hits hard.”

alt

But Nishioka will be ending a nearly year-long absence from competition against Donaire (29-1, 18 KOs), having last been in the ring for a unanimous decision over ex-beltholder Rafael Marquez in defense of his WBC belt on Oct. 1 of last year.

Nishioka made history by defeating Marquez (41-7, 37 KOs), becoming the first man from Japan to successfully defend his crown on American soil in what was his seventh defense at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Nishioka has since vacated his crown that is now worn by Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13 KOs), who rose into the 122-pound divisionn to vanquish Eric Morel  by unanimous decision in April for that title.

Nishioka is the last man to defeat WBC featherweight titleholder Jhonny Gonzalez (52-7, 45 KOs), of Mexico City, who will pursue his 13th straight win and his 12th knockout during that run in his fifth defense against former 122-pound titleholder Daniel Ponce de Leon (43-4, 35 KOs) on Sept. 15.

In order to defeat the hard-punching Gonzalez, Nishioka rose from a first-round knockdown to both drop and stop him in the third round of their fight in May of 2009.

Nishioka was equally impressive during two other appearances in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino respectively, where he stopped Evangelio Perez in the first round in December of 2002, and Jose Alonso in the fourth round in November of 2006.

“Nishioka has beaten other guys in their territory and on their home turf,” said Donaire. “He’s defeated some good people by knockout, so I know that he’s very, very dangerous.”

Donaire, meawhile, has not ended a fight within the 12-round distance since February of last year, when his second-round knockout dethroned Fernando Montiel as WBO and WBC bantamweight titleholder.

alt

The win over Montiel was the second for Donaire as a bantamweight, following a fourth-round knockout of Volodymyr Sydorenko in December of 2010. Sydorenko’s nose was broken during a bout in which he was dropped once each in the first, third and fourth rounds.

Donaire dropped Montiel, meanwhile, with a stunning left hook, followed by a short right uppercut that left the loser’s arms outstretched over his head and both legs twitching. Montiel rose on unsteady legs, fell back down, and then rose yet again and stumbled into referee Russell Mora, who waved an end to the fight.

Donaire’s win over Montiel was his fourth straight by stoppage and his 10th in 25 consecutive triumphs. Since then, however, Donaire has not looked as menacing, having to grind out three straight decision victories.

In his final bout in defense of his WBC and WBO bantamweight titles in October, Donaire was frustrated by a defensive-minded Omar Narvaez, a previously unbeaten WBO junior bantamweight titleholder.

In February, Donaire earned his WBO 122-pound belt by split-decision over Wifredo Vazquez Jr., and followed that up by dethroning Jeffrey Mathebula for the IBF title in July.

“Nishioka is the most complete fighter I’ve faced other than, maybe, Montiel. Montiel was a complete fighter and stuff like that, but this guy is even more of a veteran. Like I have said, Nishioka has been a good fighter all around. But I am a fighter who seeks challenges and who seeks to fight the best out there,” said Donaire.

“The only reason some of the other fights didn’t come through were because of negotiations. I try to fight the best out there, even with this opportunity that I’ve got against Nishioka. He’s a tough opponent. You don’t become a better fighter by not stepping up and challenging other people out there, and to me, Nishioka is the best guy out there.”

alt

Donaire-Nishioka will be part of a double-header to include lightweight beltholder Brandon Rios making his junior welterweight debut against Mike Alvarado on the undercard.

Manny Pacquiao to fight in December not November – Boxing News

Fans of the Pac-man would be disappointed to know that Manny Pacquiao, former WBO welterweight titlist, has decided to run a showdown in December, cancelling his previously scheduled date November 10. However, the Filipino proud’s opponent is still to be decided.

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s adviser, revealed that the former champion’s reason for rescheduling his fight date was due to his political goals. According to Koncz, Pacquiao’s re-election campaign will start by October and he would need sufficient time to prepare for it.

“Manny has to be in the Philippines for the filing of his candidacy in October, and I don’t want to interrupt his training, nor does Manny,” said Koncz.

“If he fights on Nov. 10, it would interrupt his training because he would have to go back to the Philippines. You lose two days going there, and it’s a long trip in the middle of camp. We don’t want to have any excuses when he fights. I believe if he fought on Nov. 10 but made a trip at that time to the Philippines, we’d lose a week of physical training, and I don’t want there to be any excuses. So we can’t go on Nov. 10, and we have told that to our promoter (Top Rank),” he added.

Pacquiao lost his WBO title to American fighter Timothy Bradley on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He currently stands with 54 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties and 38 knockouts in his portfolio. After the controversial split decision defeat to Bradley, Pacquiao has been planning to take on the Desert Storm in a rematch. However, no confirmation has been made from the Filipino’s camp regarding the situation.

On the other hand, Pacquiao’s adviser Bob Arum of Top Rank is hoping for the Filipino to go for either Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez or Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto. According to Arum, both of these fighters can attract more fans to the fight than Bradley can.

For now, it seems like Pacquiao is more interested in his political ambitions than his fighting career. He wants to bring reforms in his country and so he is giving his best there, which can hurt his fighting career.

Pacquiao must decide whether he will rematch Timothy Bradley for the WBO welterweight crown, take on Juan Manuel Marquez for the junior welterweight title, or hold off until early next year and fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a superfight worth a mountain of money.

But with so many options on the table, it’s hard to peg a possible match-up.

Originally, a Pacquiao-Bradley rematch looked certain after the controversial split decision shocker.

But then rumours surfaced that ‘Pac-Man’ promoter Bob Arum wanted Pacquiao to instead fight Marquez for a fourth time after beating him twice and drawing once.

But when holes in the Marquez plan began to sink the idea, fight talk shifted to a 2013 showdown against Mayweather in April or May.

Fans have longed for a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight but negotiations have always broken down and the luster has started to really dim in the wake of Pacquiao’s defeat and Mayweather’s incarceration.

Today, Pacquiao’s advisor met with Top Rank CEO Arum to discuss his next fight, but no details from the meeting have emerged yet.

In June, undefeated Bradley chose to keep the WBO welterweight crown and forfeit the WBO junior welterweight crown.

The decision pushed Marquez into the WBO junior welterweight throne.

Marquez, who had held the interim WBO junior welterweight title, has now reigned in four weight classes, half as many as Pacquiao. Each Pacquiao-Marquez fight was a slugfest and a close verdict.

In reality, either Marquez or Bradley appears to be more of a chance than unbeaten Mayweather, who has recently been released from prison after serving time on domestic violence charges.

Just stay patient.

Me siento bien motivado.
