Buoyed by the resounding success of its recent “Pinoy Pride” fight cards and its having won the right to stage the first world title fight at the Mall of Asia Arena when AJ “Bazooka” Banal battles Thailand’s Pungluang Sor Singyu for the WBO bantamweight title, ALA Promotions moves forward with another exciting card at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino on September 22.

Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes takes on Japan-based North Korean Myung Ho Lee who has an impressive record of 15-1 with 5 knockouts while undefeated  WBO No.1 ranked flyweight Milan Melindo (27-0, 11 KO’s) clashes with former world champion Jean Piero Perez (19-4-1, 14 KO’s) of Venezuela for the WBO International flyweight title.

The 31 year old Perez won the WBA world interim title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Jesus Jimenez of Mexico on January 29, 2011 but lost the title when he was knocked out by Juan Carlos Reveco of Argentina with a crippling punch to the liver in the 2nd round on June 10 last year.

The  29 year old Lee who stands 5’7” is coming off an 8th round technical decision over Sho Nazakawa last March 20 which was his thirteenth successive victory since he suffered a 2nd round knockout at the hands of Filipino, Alfred Nagal in Osaka, Japan on September 10, 2006.

However, the top rated challenger had a big 6th round TKO win over Albert Alcoy on October 3, 2010.

Fuentes, nicknamed “The Road Warrior” is a hard-hitting, world rated 26 year old with a record of 33-6-2 with 20 knockouts. Fuentes is ranked No.3 by the WBO, No.2 by the WBA, No. 4 by the WBC  and No. 9 by the IBF.

He won the OPBF title with a hard-fought twelve round majority decision over Masafumi Okuba in Tokyo on March 9, 2010  and has successfully defended his title four times since then and also won non-title bouts against Jemmy Gobel of Indonesia and scored a 6th round knockout over Javier Franco in his last fight on March 24 this year.

Franco who came in 2 ½ pounds over the 114 pound contracted weight limit was forced to wear ten ounce gloves which is mandated by the rules.

CEBU – ALA Promotions formally launched the 16th edition of the top rated PINOY PRIDE series today in a press conference held at the Cebu Grand Hotel. The thinking man’s pocket warrior, Milan “El Metodico” will defend his WBO International flyweight title and risk his lofty world ranking against Jean Piero Perez of Venezuela in the main event. This fight is set at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on September 22.

The 24 year old Melindo (27-0, 11 KO’s) is the WBO number one ranked contender and is also in the top ten of the WBC, WBA and IBF. He will be looking at the outcome of the fight between WBO flyweight champion Brian Viloria and WBA champion Hernan Marquez this September 29.

But first, Melindo must get past Perez (19-4-1, 14 KO’s), a former WBA interim flyweight champion. Perez is ranked three notches above Melindo in the WBA rankings.

Their common opponent is Francisco Rosas of Mexico. Perez had a twelve round draw with Rosas in 2008 while Melindo stopped Rosas in ten rounds last year.

The 31 year old Perez has faced quality opposiiton. He lost to Panamanian Rafael Concepcion, who is known here in Cebu for beating AJ Banal, but Perez beat another Panamanian former WBA champion, Carlos Murillo, in 2005. Perez’ last fight was in Panama City last April, where he beat Michael Arango by 8th round knockout.

ALA Promotions CEO Michael Aldeguer said that it is a big risk at this point to match Melindo against a world ranked boxer, but he wants to continue their tradition of providing quality fights that the fans want.

Melindo is no stranger to former world champions, having beaten Muhamad Rachman and Carlos Tamara and former interim WBO champ Jesus Geles.

Melindo has made no knockout predictions but but he promises a good fight. “I have seen Perez’ fight against Jesus Jimenez. I know that if he gets hurt, he fights back, he doesn’t back away. So, this will be a good fight.”

“I have been scoring knockouts since my body matured.” Melindo said, “I used to fight at 105 and I won by points. Now, I have grown, my muscles have developed and my conditoning has improved so I have won my recent fights by knockout.”

Also set to appear on the undercard is OPBF flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes (33-6-2, 20 KO’s) who will face Myung-Ho Lee (15-1, 5 KO’s), a Korean based in Japan. Both are on a thirteen fight winning streak and one of which will have to lose on fight night.

Fuentes is in the top ten of the four major sanctioning bodies and is also being positioned for a future world title shot.

‘I cannot afford to be complacent,” Fuentes said, “I have seen his fights and I know he is good.”

Also attending the presscon were ALA Gym trainer Edito Villamor, ALA Promotions VP Dennis Canete and PR Director Chad Canares.

Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias has put together another top-class boxing bonanza for September 8, which will see Immanuel “Prince” Naidjala, Wilbeforce Shihepo, Tommy Hango and Sacky Shikukutu in action, amongst others.

In the main fight of the evening, Naidjala will face the experienced Luis Singo of Ecuador in an international bantamweight fight over 10 rounds.

Naidjala, who is still undefeated after 14 fights, currently holds the interim WBO Africa Bantamweight title and is ranked seventh in the world by the World Boxing Organisation.

In Luis Singo, he will face an experienced boxer who has a pro record of 15 wins, 10 defeats and two draws. He has not been very successful of late, losing his last five fights, with his last victory coming in October 2010.Naidjala was last in action in June when he was pushed all the way by Emilio Norfat of Kenya before retaining the interim WBO Africa bantamweight title on a split decision.

At 36 years of age, Singo is already past his prime, but he should provide a good test for Naidjala.

The main supporting bout between Wilbeforce Shihepo and Johannes Mwetupunga should produce fireworks. The powerful Shihepo is currently the WBO Africa Super Middleweight champion, with a pro record of 17 wins and six defeats.

In his last fight he knocked out Janos Olah of Hungary inside the first round, to register the 14th knockout of his professional career.

In Mwetupunga he will however face a tough opponent who has a record of 11 wins and three defeats.

Namibian welterweight champion Tommy Hango will defend his title in a rematch against Sacky Shikukutu. Hango gave a great performance to beat Shikukutu on a split decision over 10 rounds in June, when he won the vacant title. The fight was however very close, and boxing fans can once again look forward to a great battle when the two warriors meet in a rematch.Mwetupunga has been fighting in Australia for the past four years, where he went on to win the Australian middleweight title in March 2010. He defended the title successfully on four occasions before losing it on a unanimous points decision to Jarrod Fletcher in February this year.

Another humdinger can be expected when Peter Malakia takes on Samuel Kapapu over 10 rounds for the Namibian lightweight title.

There will be four other fights on the undercard:

Sakaria Lukas, who is undefeated after four pro fights, will take on David Egumbo in a 58kg catchweight fight. over four rounds.

Immanuel Andeleki, who has won his only pro fight to date, will take on Leonard Shemuvalula who is making his pro debut, in a lightweight fight over four rounds.

Toivo Mukwendje, who has won his two pro fights to date, will take on Mathias Johannes, who lost his only pro fight, in a Junior Lightweight fight over four rounds.

Mathias Shiimbi, who suffered his first defeat in six pro fights in July, will take on Steven Shimbonde, who has one win and one defeat as a pro, in a catchweight fight over four rounds.

MANILA, Philippines – Led by the revenge-minded Jason “El Niño” Pagara, Filipino boxers conquered their visiting Mexican opponents in Pinoy Pride XV: The Rematch Saturday afternoon at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.

According to a Phil Boxing report, Pagara defeated Mexico’s Rosbel “Lobito” Montoya via sixth round technical knockout in their rematch to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) international light welterweight title.

Filipino boxer Jason Pagara celebrates after defeating Mexican Rosbel Montoya via a sixth round technical knockout.

It was sweet revenge for Pagara, who lost to Montoya last September after the Mexican gave him a lesson in counter-punching.

This time, Pagara made sure there was no doubt as he knocked down the Mexican in the very first round with hard body shots. Though Montoya recovered, Pagara remained aggressive and continued to work the body very well.

Montoya went down for good in the sixth round, as he could no longer keep up with the faster Pagara. His counter-punching was also less effective than it was last year against the Filipino.

Pagara’s record improved to 29 wins, two losses, with 18 wins by knockout, while Montoya dropped to 36-5-1, with 30 knockouts.

In the undercard, Genesis “Azukal” Servania battered Jorge “El Feroz” Pazos for 12 rounds en route to a wide points victory.

Servania knocked Pazos down in the first round, eighth round and again in the 11th to win with scores of 118-107 on all scorecards, earning the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight title.

PhilBoxing reported that Pazos was sent to a local hospital for observation but was conscious and coherent.

Servania remained unbeaten with a record of 19-0, with six wins coming by knockout. Pazos dropped to 21-4.

Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca knocked out Angel “Arcangel” Martinez in the eighth and final round. Jaca had registered knockdowns in the third and seventh round before putting down Martinez for good late in the eighth.

Jason Pagara secured his revenge as promised for his ten round unanimous decision loss to Mexico’s power-punching Rosbel Montoya last September with a smashing 6th round TKO before a large crowd at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino late Saturday.

This was not the ill-trained, troubled Pagara that was embarrassed before his hometown fans the last time around but a top conditioned, sharply focused 21 year old free of the personal problems that cost him their first meeting and supremely confident.

Pagara set the tone of the fight when he rocked Montoya with a right hand and then dropped him with a crunching body shot in the opening round.

Montoya tried to use his experience in round two but was cautioned twice by referee Danrex Tapdasan for low blows.

Pagara ripped a left hook to the liver that saw Montoya crumble to the canvas in riund three, in the process spitting out his mouthpiece to buy time, but Pagara nailed him with another vicious body shot for the second knockdown of the round.

Montoya received a third and final warning for another low blow before both fighters traded vicious body shots with Pagara jerking the head of Montoya back with a perfectly timed right straight to take the round.

The Mexican began to fight desperately but Pagara kept his composure against a series of wild roundhouse punches before catching Montoya with a flurry of punches that sapped the energy out of the game Mexican.

Pagara hammered Montoya at the start of the sixth round, hurt him badly and then caught him  with a hard right on his left arm which saw the Mexican grimace in pain as he went down and was at the mercy of the 21 year old Filipino who hit the canvas with his fists after jumping up for joy when referee Tapdasan called a halt at 1:41 of the round with Montoya unable to continue.

With the impressive win Pagara not only won the vacant WBO International junior welterweight title he also redeemed his reputation with his 18th stoppage in 29 wins against only 2 defeats and earned a chance to train in the US possibly under Robert Garcia, trainer of the reigning WBO/IBF super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.

The fights which were telecast on the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday morning with a replay on Studio 23 began withy a sensational knockout in the last second of the eighth and final round by JImrex “The Executioner” Jaca who battered Mexican knockout artist Angel Martinez with devastating body shots, dropping Martinez with a terrific left counter after the Mexican connected with a right in round three.

Jaca dropped Martinez twice in the 7th round with deadly body shots but referee Teddy Alivio who had earlier ruled a cut caused by an accidental head-butt on the Mexican as coming from a punch, added to the confusion by ruling that the knockdown was caused by a low blow for which he deducted a point from Jaca.

Jaca was in total command of the fight against the vaunted Mexican puncher and finally put him away at 2:59 of the 8th and final round with a devastating left hook.

Sweet punching Genesis “Azukal” Servania decked game Mexican Jorge Pazos with two lefts and a perfect right hook in round one but Pazos was up in a flash more stunned than hurt.

Servania continued to press the action, rocked Pazos in round three and again with a big uppercut in round four. A welt began to develop under the right eye of Pazos who continued to take a bad beating before a series of body shots with a crunching left hook to the liver sent  the Mexican down for the second time in round eight.

Pazos gamely battled on trying desperately to survive before another combination sent the Mexican crashing to the canvas in the 11th round but he held on to the end, ultimately losing a lopsided 118-107 decision on the scorecards of all three judges.

Servania won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific 122 pound title and improved his unbeaten record to 19-0 with 7 knockouts.

Pazos later started vomiting in his dressing room and had to be rushed to hospital for a routine checkup.

The fight card was one of the best and fiercely contested in recent months and fans went home more than satisfied not just with the performance of the ALA fighters but more so with the fact that the Mexicans were not patsies and  fought like true warriors with the fans showing their appreciation by applauding each one of them for their fighting spirit.

CASSIUS “Hitman” Baloyi’s and Isaac “Angel” Hlatshwayo’s dreams of redemption were shattered as the two former world champions lost their fights in Namibia on Saturday night.

Baloyi was outpointed by his namesake, Paulos “Hitman” Moses for the WBO International lightweight title, while Hlatshwayo was defeated on points by Bethel “Tyson” Ushona for the WBO’s Africa welterweight title.

The fights were organised jointly by Namibian promoter Nestor Tobias and Dingaan Thobela, his South African partner.

Baloyi last fought in February last year when he was defeated by Argenis Mendez in an IBF title eliminator, while Hlatshwayo had not seen action since being stopped in two rounds by Bongo Lipembo on March 26.

Moses had not fought since failing to win the WBO title from Ricky Burns on March 10, while 14 days later Ushona was defeated by Jan Zavech the WBO Inter-continental title.

All the judges in the Baloyi-Moses fight were South Africans. Two scored it in favour of Moses, with one voting for Baloyi.

Ushona scored a unanimous points decision.

Baloyi suffered his seventh loss from 45 fights while Hlatshwayo has lost five of his 31 bouts.

Baloyi, 37, is a former six-time world champion in five weight divisions, while Hlatshwayo has held three world title in three weight categories.

Their corners were manned for the first time by their new trainer, Keith Rass.

Thobela said:

“I believe Moses won clean. I have always supported Baloyi and Hlatshwayo, that is why I gave them these chances.

“Nestor and myself had the interest of all four of them at heart but obviously we wanted the best boxers to win because our plan is to get the winners a top 10 rating in the WBO.”

So what does the future hold for Baloyi and Hlatshwayo?

“I will talk to them once they have sat down with their trainer. But I can safely say they proved on Saturday night that they still have firepower in their hands,” said Thobela.

Manila, Philippines – The World Boxing Organization President Francisco Valcarcel has revealed his newly organized WBO International regional titles and has appointed Vice President Leon Panoncillo, Jr. as Chairman to lead with his invaluable leadership that led the WBO Asia Pacific organization to its greatest achievement of success since opening grounds in 1995.

Panoncillo informed that he had a conversation with the WBO President Francisco Valcarcel to find solution to accommodate promoters and Asian TV Network that fits their criteria in showcasing International boxing matches with the right regional titles.

“I have been approving WBO Asia Pacific programs for promoters in Philippines and other country who desire more intriguing match-ups with Mexico and other foreign boxers beyond the Asia Pacific rim and it does not seem right when an Asia Pacific champion is defending against a foreign fighter who does not belong in the region for that specific title”.

“The issue of the WBO Asia Pacific and Oriental titles holders that were organized by promoters in the Philippines and in Asia where a concern about limited access of qualified participants and promoters were looking at more opponents beyond the Asia Pacific Rim that was called upon as a challenger to create more viable matches for their program”.

Therefore, the newly organized WBO International regional title was created and will be accessible to all promoters around the world who have interest on International matches. It is a form of a regional title that can be utilized around the world without any limitation of what country the participants will come from.

As we often see matches, such as Philippines versus Mexico a lot here in the Philippines, now there will be no concerns of where the participants will come from since the WBO International will cover world-wide, benefit will be the same as the winner of the bout is guaranteed in the top 15 accordingly in the world rankings.

In fact we will be seeing the first inauguration of the new WBO International title that has been programmed by ALA Promotions and sanctioned by the WBO between current WBO Inter-continental champion Milan Melindo versus Jesus Geles on Pinoy Pride XIV at the Resort World Manila on June 2, 2012 telecast by ABS-CBN.

What a great move by the WBO President to have come up with this solution of this newly organized International regional title and on a timely manner where the prestige of the WBO Organization brand is reaching its highest peak in Asia because of the popularity of our own Manny “ Pacman” Pacquaio who is considered the best in the world pound for pound. Not to mention other WBO world champions such as Nonito the “Flash” Donaire, Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria and of course our long time World champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes who will be defending his world crown this June 2, 2012 against Felipe Salguero of Mexico.
