GMA Network, Inc. (GMA), home of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, signed another boxing luminary in Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, current IBA and WBO Women’s Super Bantamweight champion, to a 3-fight deal beginning with her upcoming match against Argentinean Yesica “La Leona” Marcos this March.

The forthcoming fight is in defense of Julaton’s WBO Super Bantamweight title and will be held in Marcos’ hometown in San Martin, Argentina.

Julaton, who has always been identified as a Kapuso fighter, is pleased to be reunited with GMA Network and describes the experience as “refreshing”. “I am happy my promoter, Allan Tremblay of Orion Sports, and I are one with GMA Network again”, said the Filipina fighter.

“GMA Network has such a powerful reach that I feel like I am able to inspire fellow Kapusos all over the globe using my image as a Filipina succeeding in such a brutal, not to mention, male-dominated sport. My heart goes out to all my Filipino supporters, and to GMA for supporting me and for sharing my story,” Julaton continued.

GMA never ceased to believe in Julaton’s qualities not only as a professional boxer, but more so as a Filipino who brings pride and honor to the country. GMA will air the match dubbed as “Laban ng Lahi presents: Giyera Sa Argentina Ana Julaton vs Yesica Marcos” on March 18, Sunday, 11 am via satellite from Mendoza, Argentina.

Julaton is already in Argentina all set to defend her WBO title next week. (GMA Network)

If the fight were tomorrow, 3-time World Champion and current WBO Female Jr. Featherweight Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton says she is more than ready to go. Of all her training camps, this one stood out for the level of focus and concentration Julaton and her team put in, and it shows in her physique during her last training session in Las Vegas, Tuesday afternoon.

Sporting strands of golden locks which she says represents the colors of the three stars and the sun in the flag of the Philippines, Julaton is ripped and firing at all cylinders. With the help of trainer Angelo Reyes, Julaton and her team went on lockdown with nothing in their minds other than putting on a sensational performance against the undefeated Yesica Marcos in her WBO Jr. Featherweight title defense on March 16 in Argentina.

WBO Female Jr. Bantamweight Championship Title Bout

Location: Punta Indio, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Result: Duer wins by TKO in the second round

Referee: Gustavo Tomas

Judges: Antonio Bernardo Soares, Jorge Tripodi, Luis Alberto Doffi

Supervisor: Jorge Molina

Promoter: Ferraro Box

MANILA, Philippines – Argentine promoter Osvaldo Rivero of KO International has assured WBO female superbantamweight champion Ana (Hurricane) Julaton of safe passage before and after her third title defense against undefeated Yesica Patricia (The Lioness) Marcos in a scheduled 10-round bout at the Teatro Griego Juan Pablo Segundo in Mendoza, Argentina, on March 16.

Rivero was the same promoter of the recent Johnriel Casimero-Luis Lazarte fight for the interim IBF lightflyweight crown in Mar del Plata, Argentina, where a riot broke out after New York referee Eddie Claudio declared the Filipino winner by technical knockout in the 10th round. Chairs, water bottles and assorted debris were thrown into the ring as Lazarte’s hometown supporters vented their disappointment on Casimero, business manager Sammy Gello-ani, trainer Christopher Tepura and cornerman Sean Gibbons. A man wearing a green vest with the words “Camioneros-Peronista” on the back entered the ring and assaulted Gello-ani who shielded Casimero from the attack.

All hell broke loose as security forces were caught flat-footed in failing to quell the riot within minutes of the breakout. Casimero hid under the ring for at least 30 minutes while police escorted the hotheads out of the stadium.

Rivero recently sent his assurance to Julaton’s Canadian promoter Allan Tremblay of Orion Sports Management. The promoter said he has staged world title fights for over 25 years and while the Casimero incident was deplorable, he guaranteed security in Mendoza for Julaton and her team. Mendoza is the challenger’s hometown.

“You have my absolute assurance that the stadium where Ana will fight is secure,” said Rivero in an email in Spanish. “All Yesica’s fights have been held before big crowds and there has never been a problem. I don’t see how things will be different in her fight against Ana. I speak from the heart. You may ask Casimero, Gello-ani and Gibbons if I am true to my word. You have my permission to investigate how I conduct my promotions if you think it is necessary.”

Tremblay said in the wake of the recent riot, he is certain that additional precautions will be taken by Rivero to prevent a recurrence. “When I arrive (in Argentina), we can cover off some specifics of our concerns so that Ana can feel comfortable,” Tremblay told Rivero. “This kind of thing has happened in other parts of the world in years past and is not necessarily indicative of the normal behavior patterns of the fans. However, better safe than sorry. You have reassured me and we will be there.”

Tremblay said the WBO has approved only neutral judges for the fight. “Without this in place, we would not have taken this fight,” he said. “It was imperative to level the playing field and give Ana the best possible chance to succeed in what will be the toughest test of her career. Mr. Rivero has been most gracious throughout the negotiation period for which I am appreciative. This is a much-anticipated matchup that will test the skill and endurance of both these world-class competitors.”

Rivero was remorseful in explaining how the riot in the Casimero fight started. “It was unfortunate,” he said. “The whole world saw it (in the Internet and on TV). It was a dark night for boxing, not only for my country but for the world. We provided all the security measures required for the event – police to cover the capacity of the stadium, firemen, paramedics. I assure you the police acted courageously under the circumstances – one policeman suffered a fracture in his arm and another had wounds in his head. The people from the Truckers Union, the sponsor of the fight, protected the Filipinos and the referee. One of them, Gonzalo Basile, a popular Argentine heavyweight boxer, was in the ring trying to defend the visitors. Everyone in my organization, including my son Sebastian and myself, were with the Filipinos in the dressing room and later in the hotel, providing whatever assistance we could give. Those who can attest to what we did are WBO supervisor Anibal Miramontes, Sammy Gello-ani and Sean Gibbons.”

Team Sauerland regrets to inform boxing fans that the March 17 show at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn has been postponed to April 21 after WBO / WBA / WBC Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus has been flattened by tonsillitis. While preparing for the hotly-anticipated showdown with French power-puncher Anne Sophie Mathis, the “First Lady” fell sick.

“We are very sorry we have to postpone the second Nordic Fight Night but unfortunately things like this happen in boxing,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “Cecilia is taking antibiotics and cannot train for eight days, which is impossible to make up for in such a crucial period of the preparation. The only positive note today is that we have already confirmed April 21 as the new date together with Viasat and Arena Nord. The card will remain the same, with Braekhus-Mathis and Nielsen-Vega the headliners. Torben Keller, Reda Zam Zam and Erik Skoglund will also be in action.”

Said Braekhus: “I am very sorry for all my fans who have already bought tickets. I would have loved to fight on March 17 but the doctors would not allow me to train for eight days. That is a huge blow for me because I was really looking forward to March 17. I know that so many fans from Norway have already bought tickets to support me in the biggest fight of my life. I am glad that Team Sauerland has already found a new date. I will return to training as soon as possible and then be in top shape on April 21.”

Speaking from her training base in Nancy, Mathis stated: “I wish Cecilia a speedy recovery. I was ready to beat her on March 17 and I am ready to beat her on April 21. It gives her five more weeks to look at the titles before I take them to France.”

Patrick Nielsen will now have to wait until April 21 to take on Gaston Vega in a clash for the vacant WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title. “I feel sorry for Cecilia and hope she gets well soon,” he said. “Personally, I don´t mind whether I win the WBA Intercontinental Title
on March 17 or April 21. The more time I spend in the gym, the better I get. This is bad news for Vega. He is going down.”

All tickets purchased for March 17 remain valid for April 21 but can be returned by email ( info@arenanord.dk ) or by phone (+45 9845 9191).

WORLD Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Ana ‘The Hurricane’ Julaton said she is not afraid to fight in Argentina when she defends her crown against undefeated Yesica Marcos on March 16.

Julaton (10-2-1 win-loss-draw slate) made the statement a week after her compatriot International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero was hurt in a riot in Argentina. The angry fans of his opponent Argentine Luis Lazarte whom he had beaten via 10th round technical knockout mobbed Casimero.

“I’m really excited about fighting in Argentina,” Julaton told examiner.com writer Dennis Guillermo on Friday. “All of it just gets me amped up; it’s really getting me juiced about it. I’m not afraid to fight anywhere.”

Julaton emphasized that real champions do not dodge challenges. “I want to show the boxing world that I will fight anyone, anywhere at any time and will do my utmost to represent the proud Filipino Nation in the great traditions that they come to expect,” she added.

Marcos has 18 wins, 0-loss and a draw under her belt.

Julaton’s promoter Allan Tremblay of Orion Sports Management assured the Filipina boxing star that the WBO would hold the fight in a safe and pleasant venue somewhere in Argentina and that neutral officials would officiate the bout.

“Argentina is a big country,” Tremblay told Guillermo. “That’s just like saying there was a brawl that happened in America.”

World Boxing Organization (WBO) Bantamweight Champion, Kaliesha “Wild Wild” West (Moreno Valley, California, 14-1-3, 4 KOs) will travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, to support the women’s championship boxing card on November 20, 2011, held at the Dallas Events Center, located within the Texas Station Gambling Hall and Hotel.  The main event will feature Ada “The Ace” Velez (19-3-3, 6 KOs) defending her IBF Super Bantamweight Title against Melinda “La Maravilla” Cooper (21-1, 11 KOs) in a 10 round bout.  This will be a rematch of their previous March 2011 bout in Costa Rica, which Velez won by split decision.  In addition, Stacy “Stay-Lo” Reile (10-3, 4 KOs) will defend her IBF Featherweight title against Dahiana Santana (27-6, 12 KOs).  Undefeated, Russian heavyweight, Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (11-0, 11 KOs) will take on Rich “Super” Power (15-1, 11 KOs).  Promising female boxer, Tatina “Lil’ Tyson” Anderson, will be featured on the undercard.
Sampson Boxing, LLC, is promoting the boxing card in association with Texas Station Gambling Hall and Hotel.  Also helping to bring women’s boxing back to Las Vegas is Pablo Betancourt, owner of Executive Entertainment, LLC, who teamed up with Sampson Boxing, LLC, and Texas Station Gambling Hall and Hotel to make this event a reality.  Like Kaliesha West’s promoter, Hector Garcia, Sampson Lewkowicz believes that women deserve to be showcased on major boxing cards in the United States.  Team West is not directly connected with the promotion of this fight, yet they believe it is extremely important for women’s boxing that a large amount of people support this event.  Kaliesha and Juan West will be taking a day off from training to attend the event.
Kaliesha West said, “I’m as excited for this fight as the boxing fans were for Pacquiao-Marquez, held last week in Las Vegas.  I’ve been in the ring with both of these women, so I know it is going to be an exciting fight for the fans and one to look forward to.  This fight has the opportunity to prove just how skilled female boxers can be.  America has been missing out on great boxing for too long.  The pool of women’s boxing talent is much better than it was in the 90’s, because women have had the opportunity to be mended in the amateurs, unlike earlier times when they weren’t allowed.  I hope everyone comes out to support women’s boxing on November 20th in Las Vegas.”
Juan West, her father, trainer and manager said, “I’m excited to travel to Las Vegas to see a female title bout in the main event.  This fight features two of the best female professional boxers in the United States, Ada Velez and Melinda Cooper.  Women are taking a step closer to gaining the recognition they deserve for all the hard work that they put in to their sport.  I’m traveling to Vegas to support this event, and I hope others follow as well. Hopefully, this fight is successful in gaining momentum towards women of this caliber being showcased live on all the major television networks.  I am looking forward to both women giving it their all.  It is time for the world to be impressed by the new era in women’s boxing.”
Kaliesha West was born in South Haven, Michigan, and began boxing at the age of ten.  Her family relocated to Moreno Valley, California, and she became a decorated amateur boxing star, winning 98 amateur bouts, including the 2003 National Golden Gloves.  She began her pro career in 2006, when she was just eighteen years old.  On September 18, 2010, she won the vacant Women’s WBO Bantamweight title on the under card of the Mosley-Mora Golden Boy Promotions PPV, by defeating Angel Gladney, via a seventh-round knockout.  The fight took place at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California and was held during the Mexican Bicentennial Celebration.

Kaliesha West, who is twenty-three years of age, signed with HG Garcia Boxing in July 2011.  On August 20, 2011, she successfully defended her WBO title against Jessica Villafranca, winning by a unanimous decision.  Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding her opponent, West’s title defense on October 29, 2011 was cancelled.  No date has been set for West’s next WBO title defense.

http://www.eldiario24.com/nota/238066/carolina-duer-retuvo-la-corona-supermosca-de-la-omb.html

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — In many ways, Carolina Raquel Duer is a typical middle-class Jewish kid from Buenos Aires. She attended a Jewish day school, spent time working and traveling in Israel and celebrated her bat mitzvah at a Conservative synagogue.

But when she stepped into the ring Nov. 12 at Club Atletico Lanus, she showcased a set of talents not commonly associated with the Jewish women of Buenos Aires.

Duer, 33, is the World Boxing Organization’s super flyweight champion. Making the third defense of her title, Duer defeated Maria Jose Nunez by a technical knockout in the third round. Duer knocked down her Uruguyan opponent with a left cross, Nunez scrambled to her feet before her cornerman — also her husband — threw in the towel to stop the fight.

A crowd of 2,400 was on hand to watch the bout, including the vice governor of the Buenos Aires province and world middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla ” Martinez. National Public Television aired the fight live.

Known by her nickname, “The Turk,” Duer is the daughter of Syrian immigrants to Argentina. She attended the capital’s Jaim Najman Bialik Primary School and spent more than a month in Israel in her younger years working on a kibbutz and touring the country. On weekends she went to the local Maccabi club and attended Jewish summer camp. It was there that her feisty personality was first evident.

“I liked the social activities of the Jewish community, but sometimes I got in trouble because I stood up for some disadvantaged kid,” Duer told JTA. “Injustice has always bothered me.”

Last year, Duer hit a thief who tried to steal her purse on the street.

“The ambulance came,” she recalled. “I don´t think that guy would dare steal from a girl again.”

Her bat mitzvah was celebrated at the Iona Hebrew Center. “It moves me when I go to the temple,” Duer said. “Last time I went for a tragic situation, and I was there with my family. It’s very touching for me. I’m very Jewish in many ways.”

One of those ways is through food. Duer was the producer of a television show about Sephardic food, and she worked as a waitress and bartender in her family´s restaurant.

“Hummus, lajmashin, kibbeh, falafel — I love them, and I know how to cook them, but usually I can eat very little because of my profession,” Duer said. “I’m always training and trying to reach the right weight for the fights.”

Duer’s life changed forever in 2002 when she accompanied a friend who was trying to lose weight to a gym. There she was approached by the legendary Antonio Zacarias, a well-known local trainer, who asked if she had ever boxed before. Zacarias wanted to train her, and Duer loved the idea.

As an amateur she won 19 of 20 fights. In 2007, she turned pro. Three years later she won the WBO title by defeating Lorena Pedazza by decision. She has a professional record of nine wins and three losses.

Like her ancestors — Syrian immigrants were renowned as traders — Duer has an entrepreneurial spirit, which she brings to her boxing. She actively seeks sponsors and carefully manages the business of fighting. Asked how much she expects to earn from the Nov. 12 matchup, Duer declined to answer.

“I won’t tell,” she said, “because I will be envied.”

Duer is the eighth Argentinian woman to hold a WBO boxing championship and the first Jewish one. But she’s hardly the country’s first Jewish fighter. As in the United States, decades ago Jews were leading figures in the Latin American boxing world. In 1940, Argentina’s Jaime Averboch won the welterweight title but died the same year without defending his belt. Recently retired Mariano Plotinsky (“The Demolisher”), who has fought with a Star of David on his shorts, held the WBO Intercontinental title but lost his bid for a heavyweight class world title in 2010.

In the future, Duer hopes to live in New York and train at the legendary Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, home to another celebrated Jewish fighter, Yuri Foreman. She also hopes to get more involved in educational activities.

“I would like to teach kids the difference between boxing and fighting,” she said. “My family were always very good people. I think this is a characteristic that comes from Jewish education.”

In action on December 3 will be WBO & WBA Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Robert Helenius (16-0, 11 KOs), who takes on an opponent to be announced. Ever since knocking out three former world champions – namely Lamon Brewster, Samuel Peter and Siarhei Liakhovich – Helenius is a superstar in Finland. “It´s a small country,” he said with a smile. “But the people love sports, especially boxing. It will be a great pleasure to fight in front of my hometown fans again. I know it will be very loud at Hartwall Areena on December 3.”
Helenius had already visited Helsinki last Thursday to attend a packed press conference before returning to Berlin to resume practice. On Monday afternoon, he joined Alexander Povetkin on the podium in the German capital. “It will be a great night of boxing in Helsinki,” coach Ulli Wegner said. “The fact that Robert has already knocked out three former world champions speaks volumes about his class. He will make his hometown fans very proud on December 3 – just like Cecilia Braekhus, who is the best female boxer out there.”
The WBO/WBC/WBA Female Welterweight Champion (18-0, 4 KOs) will make another defence of her title collection on December 3, taking on Kuulei Kupihea (7-1, 2 KOs). “It will be great to fight in Helsinki again,” she said. “My management regularly picks opponents from the top ten. I am happy to prove myself against the best challengers out there. I will continue my winning streak in Helsinki.”
