The president of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Francisco “Paco” Varcarcel, informed today that the convention of the boxing organization will be held in Panama from October 29 to November 2.

“Nicaragua was the host, but because of the difficult situation that the country is experiencing, which I know that the Nicaraguan brothers will resolve. Therefore, it will be done in Panama, which was among the other possible sites along with Costa Rica,” the WBO chief told reporters, during his visit in Panama.

Varcarcel said the convention will be attended by great figures of world boxing and they have already confirmed the presence of former world champions among the more than 300 boxing people who will attend the WBO convention.

“We have already been confirmed by Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Miguel Cotto and Wladimir Klitschko, and WBO super lightweight world champion Terence Crawford will be confirmed, everything will depend on his schedule of fights, including Jimmy Lennon Jr., who will be the master of ceremony at the gala,” he said.

He added that Cotto and Klitschko will be part of the figures that will be in the golf tournament that is scheduled for October 29, the day of the opening of the convention.

The convention will also feature seminars to improve the work of boxing officials and referees.

“Seminars for officers are very important, because on several occasions it is very sad to see how they vote,” he said.

Puerto Rican boxing promoter Peter Rivera said a boxing event will be held on October 31, where each of the promoters attending the convention will bring their best fighter to participate in the event.

“The gala is called WBO champions’ night and will be attended by the best national and international fighters watching the action,” said Rivera.

He also said that a recognition will be given to the Panamanian fighters who shined in the organization and stressed a tribute will be paid to Pedro “El Rockero” Alcázar, a fighter born in the Central American country and former WBO champion.

El encuentro sirvió para que el jerarca de la OMB ratificara a Panamá como sede de 31 Convención Anual de este organismo, programada para el 29 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, cuyo país anfitrión había sido asignada originalmente a Managua, Nicaragua, pero que debido a los conflictos sociales y políticos que enfrenta dicha nación, se cambió a Panamá.

Valcárcel dijo estar contento con la nueva sede, alegando la buena ubicación donde fluyen muchas líneas aéreas con infinidades de destino, donde a la fecha ya se han ido adelantando algunas acciones para que la convención llene las expectativas,

In a crowed activity held in Arecibo, the World Boxing Organization (WBO), with the collaboration of former world champion Samuel ‘El Torbellino’ Serrano, brought together several former Puerto Rican world champions along with currents boxers to recognize the trajectory of former three-division world champion Wilfredo ‘Bazooka’ Gómez.

“Had the WBO existed in the Gómez era, he would have been our champion. But we still celebrate him because of his legacy in the ring and his great humility as a person. This belt that we preset to him today names him a WBO ‘Honorific Champion of Champions’, yet it is only a small sample of the affection and admiration that we have for him,” said WBO president Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcárcel.

An excited Gomez said that “I thank with the WBO and Paco for their support and recognition on this day. Thank you very much. I am very happy with everyone who is here.”

Gómez won the gold medal in the first amateur world championships, held in Havana in 1974. He then jumped to the professional ranks and won world titles at 122, 126 and 130 pounds. He retired with a professional record of 44-3-1 with 42 wins by knockout, and is considered one of the best fighters of all time.

One of boxing’s very best Terence Crawford returns on June 9th, and his trainer Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre has a warning for Jeff Horn.

Crawford challenges Horn for his WBO World Welterweight crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas next week, live in the UK and Ireland on BoxNation.

After the fight was pushed back from April when Crawford damaged his right hand, Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton labelled the American “a princess”, adding “he seems to be a bit soft”.

“The pressure’s on Horn but I don’t give a damn where the pressure’s at because Horn’s still getting his ass whipped,” McIntyre told Fox Sports.

“I’m gonna look right at his coach and say ‘you a*shole’. I tried to tell you that we was gonna win – you been talking all that sh*t, putting all that sh*t in the newspaper – all that sh*t on social media and you didn’t have a clue what you were going up against.

“I think Horn and his coach are scared because they know that Terence Crawford is going to whip Jeff Horn’s butt,” he added.

Crawford is a big favourite with the bookmakers to wrestle away Horn’s belt and become a three-division World Champion, and McIntyre argues that Horn’s aggressive style will play into the challenger’s hands.

“He don’t have much skills. He bounces around a lot but he comes to fight every single fight. He does come in shape that’s the good part about him – he will come and challenge – he will challenge Terence and that’s great because we need the best out of Terence this fight and Horn will bring the best out of Terence.”

McIntyre is fully confident that ‘Bud’ will be victorious in Vegas: “I just can’t wait to shut his coach up and get my hands on that belt!”.

World Boxing Organization [WBO] super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramírez’s (37-0, 25 KOs) next defence will be in Oklahoma on June 30 against the hard-hitting Roamer Alexis Angulo (23-0, 20 KOs) of Colombia. Angulo, trained by respected Cuban coach Pedro Díaz, is based out of Miami and, although he is not well known on the boxing landscape, enters the bout with a high knock out ratio.

Speaking from his training camp in Los Angeles, California, Ramírez told BoxingScene.com that he is preparing for the encounter as he would for any other.

“I know that he’s a strong fighter, a hard puncher, he has a good record and as always we are preparing 100% for this to come out with the win,” he assured.

“He’s coming to take my belt away from me so that’s why I train so hard. I have to train harder than my opponents.”

Last February, Gilberto retained his WBO title against the previously unbeaten Habib Ahmed in what was a convincing display culminating in a sixth-round stoppage by the referee after Ahmed’s corner threw in the towel.

“I was happy to win so dominantly, and I hope this next one will be no different. I want to win convincingly.”

‘Zurdo’, originally from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico now trains in Los Angeles for his fights and finds the base there to be of great benefit.

“We come and go really,” he explained.

“We train in Los Angeles but of course my family is back in Mazatlán so we’ll go back there for a bit and then return to training camp after to prepare for fights. The sparring is much better in Los Angeles, I can concentrate better here, away from the distractions of home.”

The super middleweight division seems to be catching fire again lately, particularly with the likes of David Benavidez and Jose Uzcátegui making a name for themselves in the United States as well as the British contingent of 168lbs fighters. When asked about International Boxing Federation [IBF] champion James DeGale, Ramírez admitted that he sees some slippage in the Londoner.

“He seems to have dipped a little bit, he would be a good rival but I believe I have the skills to beat him and anyone else in my division. I want to show that I am the best at super middleweight. I saw his last fight, it was very close but I think he did deserve the win. I’d like to fight him, even go over to England if he wanted the fight. I’d love to fight in England and take his belt off him.

“I could also fight the winner of George Groves and Callum Smith from the tournament, but I think Callum Smith would be a more interesting fight. For me he’s the favourite to win the series and beat Groves. He’s tall like myself and he’s skilful so it would be a good fight against him too.”

The Mexican-based Venezuelan, José ‘Bolivita’ Uzcategui is another potential opponent for Ramirez. Indeed, he also trains at times in California, in the San Diego area.

“I have seen that Uzcátegui also trains in California, I have followed him a bit and I think soon he will be another opponent of mine. The division is good right now and there’s a lot of good fighters, I just want to show that I’m the best out of them and be a pound-for-pound fighter. I also know David Benavidez quite well, we’ve done some sparring together, we’ve been in the gym together and it would be a very competitive fight with him.”

Although we conducted the interview in Gilberto’s native Spanish, the 26-year-old has made huge strides in learning English and now regularly gives interviews on television in English, something he believes can help grow his fanbase.

“Speaking English opens you up to another type of market, I like communicating with people and they can appreciate and hear me with my own words. We’re in another country and English is the main language so why not speak it? It can only help you as a person too.”

WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn (18-0-1, 12 KOs) is feeling very confident in training days, as he counts down the days for a scheduled showdown with mandatory challenger Terence Crawford (32-0, 23 KOs).

The contest takes place on June 9th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

As weeks continue to pass, there has been a lot of trash talking between the two teams.

Crawford, regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, is a huge favorite to win the fight.

Horn believes Crawford and his handlers are attempting to get in his head – which he says won’t happen regardless of what they say to him.

“They’re trying to make me feel nervous and to doubt myself, but I haven’t done that for a second,” Horn tells Foxsports.com.au.

“I’m not scared of this guy. You have to be confident in boxing, if you go in there thinking you’re going to lose then that’s exactly what will happen.”

There has been some controversy over the gloves – with Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton expressing concern that Crawford was going to potentially use horsehair gloves.

Horn is not concerned about the brand of gloves worn by Crawford.

“I’m not worried about the gloves, I haven’t sparred using the horse hair gloves because they’re too small for sparring. It’s all just distraction and tactics,” Horn said.

“I’ve worked harder for this fight than I ever have. I’ll be pushing hard, pressuring him throughout the fight. I’ll be thinking about my family, about my wife and daughter, going to the places that lift me when I need to dig deep.

“He has a devastating left hand, he can hurt you in the body or in the head. He’s able to switch-hit. But that’s all right, I have a few plans of my own. It won’t be like Brisbane, that’s for sure. There will be plenty of boos, but you can use that to your advantage as a fighter, too.”

CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO – All help is good in the face of a first world title defense of the world championship, especially if it comes from the hands of someone with the wealth of experience from former four divisions world champion, Miguel Cotto.

And that is the case of the WBO Jr. flyweight champion, Ángel ‘Tito’ Acosta, who has several sessions of individual work with Cotto to complement that with his coaches in the face of his championship fight on June 16 in the Coliseo de Puerto Rico against the dangerous Nicaraguan Carlos Buitrago as part of a card presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions and H2 Entertainment and which will be televised by DIRECTV Puerto Rico as part of his series ‘Night of Champions’.

Acosta had his most recent encounter with Cotto on Wednesday afternoon in Caguas, where he was seen working certain combinations and displacements that Cotto used to use effectively.

One of them included the use of two consecutive jabs to open the guard, a small displacement to then connect a straight shot and then enter with two powerful hooks before moving again outside the area of exchanges.

“He’s taught me the technique, how to put solid punches. Anyone who stands in front of me, hit him hard. “(Also a) be more aggressive, use the skill, push the boxer, do many things.”, said Acosta (17-1 with 17 knockouts), who is already putting into practice what was taught by Cotto during his preparation.

“Now (Cotto) is well stuck (helping me). He has time to attend me and his boxers. It has helped me a lot. Yesterday I learned a lot from him. On Monday I also did couple of techniques and (later) I was able to do them in sparring. We already have the fight strategy”.

Acosta has aspirations to convert Buitrago (30-3-1 with 17 knockouts) in his eighteenth victim by way of the knockout but he knows that the Nicaraguan will be elusive, so he intends to make the most of the occasions in which the Central American fighter decide to ‘raffle’ in the ‘give and take’.

“He has good boxing, he’s coming to box me, to keep me from hitting him. That’s why I’m smart. The knockout comes alone. But if I see that I can knock him out quickly, I knock him out, ” Acosta said, adding that Buitrago will leave Puerto Rico without achieving his dream of being a world champion.

“He says he’s not going to touch the canvas. But on June 16 he will touch his dream. He will achieve his dream by touching the canvas. ”

For his part, Cotto expressed satisfaction to work with Acosta, although he ruled out dedicating himself fully to the facet of being a boxing trainer.

“Tito is a hard-working, humble, neighborhood boy. The only thing that is done is to help in the best possible way. He has confidence in me and I know he will do the best he can in the fight. In the way that he can trust me, we will continue working in the same way, “said Cotto, adding that whenever he has time, he will do everything possible to share his vast knowledge in pugilism with the boxers he represents and who are coming up .

“This is something spontaneous, (which is given) every time there is an opportunity. It’s not in my north to train (full-time fighters). ”

Oscar Valdez’s victory over Scott Quigg on March 10th on a rainy night at the StubHub Center came at quite a cost.

Valdez – facing a Quigg who didn’t even try and make the featherweight limit and came in heavy and thus ineligible to win the WBO featherweight title – suffered a fractured jaw, which hospitalized him for a few days after the fight.

When asked how his fighter was doing, manager Frank Espinoza told BoxingScene.com – “Since his fight he’s been back to the doctor four times in two-and-a-half months. His progress has come along well. The wire that was in his jaw has been removed so he’s now able to eat solid food. We have periodic checks with the doctor. He’ll be back there in June for another check-up.”

It’s unclear if Valdez (the reigning WBO 126-pound titlist) will return to the ring in 2018.

“That’s solely up to the doctors discretion, it’s his call,” said Espinoza, who makes it clear that Valdez’s return to the ring will not be handled recklessly.

“Listen, he’s had 36 hard, tough rounds and now after suffering a serious injury to his jaw, I have a responsibility to my client to do what’s right for him and his long-term future. He’s the type of guy that will literally fight anybody – as he showed back in March – and there will be plenty of time to make the big fights in the featherweight division but for the time being we will take the appropriate fights to bring Oscar back.”

The 27-year old Valdez (24-0, 19 KO’s) won the WBO strap in the summer of 2016 by blasting out Matias Rueda in two rounds and has made three successful title defenses.

“Oscar will be back stronger and better than ever and he’ll be involved in some of the best fights in the division but again, there will be a process in getting there. That’s my job as a manager to do what’s in his best interest,” stated Espinoza.

Building his own legacy in a traditionally rich, hot-bed for boxing like Puerto Rico, Acosta (17-1, 17 KOs) captured the vacant WBO title last December at famed Madison Square Garden, when he knocked out Juan Alejo (24-4-1), of Mexico, in the 10th round.

An outstanding amateur boxer with more than 180 matches, highlighted by his gold-medal performance at the Central American Games,), the San Juan-based fighter has defeated 22-5 Juan Guzman (KO1), 12-1 Japhet Uutoni (TKO12), and 28-5-3 Luis Ceja (KO2).

“My goal is to be the best,” Acosta said. “I grew-up watching Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto, who are my favorite fighters. I will work as hard as I can to give the best to my family, as well as make my island proud. I will win on June 16th and let the world know that I am the best 108-pound boxer in the world.”

Having a future Hall of Famer such as Cotto as his promoter is a tremendous advantage, in and out of the ring, for Acosta. “It means a lot and is an honor for me to have a living legend like Miguel Cotto as my promoter,” Acosta explained. “He has guided my career the best way. He also gets involved in my camp and wants me to get better and better every fight.”

“Tito Acosta is a really good fighter,” Cotto commented about his protégé. “He is World Champion for a reason. We will work to give him the best opportunities. WBA #2-rated Buitrago (30-3-1, 17 KOs) will be fighting in his fifth world title fight, after losing three times with one draw. He was stopped for the first time in his last fight this past December, by undefeated International Boxing Federation (IBF) Minimumweight World Champion Hiroto Kyoguchi (8-0), in the eighth round of their title fight in Japan.

All three of Buitrago’s career losses have been to world champions, including a pair to Thammanooon Niyomtrong (11-0) in 2016 and 2014, both by way of 12-round unanimous decisions in Thailand for the Interim WBA title. Buitrago also fought a 12-round split draw in 2013 to then-WBO Minimum World Champion Merlito Sabillo (12-0) in Manila, Philippines.

“Chris Buitrago is a great fighter and tough challenger, who has the highest level of experience, and that motivates me,” Acosta spoke about his Nicaraguan opponent. “People want to watch a toe-to-toe brawl and he brings that style. I think he will brawl with me, but I’ll be ready for any style he brings June 16th.

“I work for the KO (he has 17 knockouts in his 17 wins) because that’s what fans like. I work for that every fight and I will win June 16th by knockout!”

For Jeff Horn, it was a statement round; to a highly sceptical boxing world, to his decorated opponent and most importantly, to himself.

In front of 50,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium, against an all-time great in Manny Pacquiao, many expected Horn to be overwhelmed and outgunned from the first bell. Nerves would devour him, then Pacquiao would feast on his bones.

Instead it was Horn that fought like the more-seasoned man. He pounced on Pacquiao, shook off the nerves, took the round and set himself on the path to a famous victory. Pacquiao laughed and dared him to come on harder… there’s rarely a better sign that a fighter has found themselves in deeper than they predicted.

Now Horn hopes to repeat the dose when he meets Terence Crawford and defends his WBO welterweight strap at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on June 9.

With the belief Horn has been fed to the lions to gift the undefeated Crawford an easy crown in his first outing since moving up to welterweight, the Brisbane fighter knows he must put himself on the map early.

He said he wanted to remind Crawford, rated by most in the top handful of pound-for-pound fighters in the world, that he was the man with the belt and not in Vegas on a holiday.

The respect out of the ring is genuine, even if the relationship between the camps has gone steadily south amid a string of delays, injuries to Crawford and a minor controversy about the type of gloves to be used.

In the ring, Horn said the charity would quickly evaporate.

“He’s [Crawford] a different fighter because he likes that counter-punching style, where Manny likes to fight in bursts. He wants to be on top of you straight away,” Horn said before another sparring session on Monday.

“I have to treat it the same way and show him [Crawford] little respect in there. I’m the world champion, he’s coming to fight me and I have to show that I am the champion.”

Horn is too switched on and well trained to be reckless early but his ability to tune out of boxing and all of its endless noise has proven to be one of his best weapons as a top-flight pro.

He wasn’t daunted at all by fighting in front of 50,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium and said if Crawford thought he would be off his game fighting in the US, he was mistaken.

“It’s pretty inspiring [to fight in Vegas]. I went there for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and for a holiday as well as the ESPYs. I’ve been there a few times. It’s an amazing place. But to fight there will be different.

“Duco have done a really good thing to make these big shows for me. Suncorp, you can’t beat that. The bright lights are there but it will be the same as all the other fights.”

The furore about Crawford fighting in minimalist horsehair gloves has proven to be much ado about nothing, with their camp denying over the weekend that they would be their weapon of choice.

Horn and his trainer Glenn Rushton will prepare for any late changes but Horn can now resume training and fighting in his more familiar Everlast Powerlock gloves, which he has donned for his past 10 fights.

MANILA, Philippines — Another All-Filipino battle for a world title is on the horizon as the respective camps of former 3-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (41-1-4, 23 KO’s) of Bacolod, Negros Occidental, and hard-hitting “Mighty” Aston Palicte (24-2, 20 KO’s) of Bago City (also in Negros Occidental) are in deep negotiations for their clash for the vacant WBO Super Flyweight World belt.

In a letter from Luis Batista Salas of the WBO Championships Committee dated April 30 to Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions (handler of Nietes) and Guy Tayor of Roy Jones Jr. Boxing (promoter of Palicte), the two camps have been given a period of time of only 10 days to work-out an agreement.

If an agreement is not reached by the two camps within the ten days, the WBO will order a purse bid, with a minimum acceptable bid of $100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Dollars). However, either camp may call for a purse bid at any time during their ongoing negotiation.

The winner of the Nietes-Palicte clash will be required to defend his newly acquired title against a mandatory challenger designated by the WBO, within 90 days from date of the fight.

Nietes-Palicte would be the third time in history that two Filipino fighters battle for a world title in pro boxing. The first one was Villa-Sencio in Manila in 1925, and the second will Ancajas-Sultan to take place on May 26 in Fresno, CA.

Con más de ocho semanas de intensa preparación el sólido prospecto tijuanense Jaime Munguía cerró ayer las sesiones de sparrings con la prueba de los 12 rounds para su combate del sábado 12 de mayo en Verona, Nueva York contra el campeón mundial Superwelter WBO Sadam Alí y afirma estar más que listo para dar coronarse campeón.

Munguía hizo una preparación de 4 semanas en su natal Tijuana y las últimas cuatro en Azusa, California con el entrenador Robert Alcazar.

Munguía (28-0-0, 24 Ko’s) y Ali (26-1-0, 14 Ko’s) chocarán en el combate estelar de la velada que Golden Boy Promotions, en asociación con Promociones Zanfer, montará en el Turning Stone Resort & Casino de Verona, Nueva York y transmitirá HBO al mundo y en México Azteca 7, La Casa del Boxeo transmitirá a todo el país. 

El nacido en Tijuana, de apenas 21 años de edad, reemplazará a Liam “Beefy” Smith, ya que estaba programado para combatir ante Ali pero debido a complicaciones de salud a tan sólo tres semanas de la pelea abandonó el combate. 

El poco tiempo con el que se le avisó a Munguía Escobedo de esta oportunidad titular no será un problema para él, pues tenía programado pelear en la cartelera #GGGMartirosyan. 

“Llegaré en perfectas condiciones ya que iba a pelear el sábado en la función de Golovkin y traigo una gran  preparación. Estoy muy contento y motivado por esta oportunidad y con muchas ganas de regalarle otro campeonato a México”, comentó Munguía, quien hizo   a tope los 12 rounds con tres sparrings distintos. 

Para esta pelea Munguía se hizo de los servicios del experimentado entrenador Robert Alcazar, quien ha estado en la esquina de grandes peleadores como lo son Oscar De La Hoya, Jessie Vargas, Edwin Valero, entre otros. 

“Me he acoplado muy bien con Robert, he aprendido bastante, a mí siempre me ha gustado trabajar fuerte y el me exige mucho, estoy muy a gusto, contento y satisfecho con la preparación con la que llegaremos mi entrenador y yo”, aseguró el de Tijuana y agregó que en los siguientes días continuará con sus corridas, ejercicios de soltura y aparatos.

¨Cerramos fuerte, explosivos y con una excelente condición física en los siguientes días continuar con mis rutinas de corrida y de gimnasio, sin sparrings, lo del peso estamos en tiempo y forma sin preocupación alguna¨ señaló el joven retador.

 Esta será la segunda presentación de Munguía en los Estados Unidos, el pasado mes de diciembre debutó en ese país cuando derrotó por nocaut técnico a Paul Valenzuela Jr. en Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ali intentará defender con éxito por primera ocasión su cinturón después de arrebatárselo al puertorriqueño Miguel Cotto tras vencerlo por decisión unánime, también en diciembre en Nueva York.

El campeón minimosca de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo (OMB), Ángel “Tito” Acosta, comenzó el lunes a calentar los motores de cara a su importante primera defensa del próximo 16 de junio en el Coliseo de Puerto Rico.

Acosta, quien según el propio presidente de la OMB, Francisco “Paco” Valcárcel podría enfrentar una dura, difícil y larga noche cuando enfrente al nicaragüense Carlos Buitrago, advirtió a su rival de turno que llegará en las mejores condiciones para asegurar de que se marche de la Isla con las manos vacías.

Buitrago no estuvo presente durante el anuncio oficial del combate y en su lugar, envió un mensaje grabado en el que aseguró llegará preparado e inspirado en su mayor ejemplo -el extriple campeón mundial Alexis Argüello- para desbancar al boricua en el evento denominado La Batalla.

“Estuve hace unos días en Nicaragua”, comentó Valcárcel. “Conozco a Buitrago y debo decir que después de Kosei Tanaka (ante quien Acosta sucumbió en su primera oportunidad titular), Buitrago será el rival más duro que haya enfrentado en su carrera. Será una pelea muy dura y Acosta tendrá que estar bien preparado. Podría ser incluso una larga noche”, sostuvo el líder de la OMB.

Buitrago, que tiene marca de 30-3-1 y 17 nocáuts, perdió el pasado 31 de diciembre ante el Japonés Hiroto Kyoguchi en un choque en el que falló en su intento por agenciarse el título paja de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo (FIB).

“Sé que Acosta es un campeón mundial y lo dará todo, pero yo llegaré inspirado en mi máximo maestro, Alexis Argüello, con el objetivo de lograr mi sueño de ser campeón del mundo”, sostuvo.

Acosta, que viene de hacerse campeón del mundo el pasado mes de diciembre en Nueva York, y que además tiene récord de 17-1 y 17 nocáuts, no tardó en enviar un mensaje de potencia a su retador.

“Que siga soñando porque conmigo no se hará campeón mundial. No le quito méritos a Buitrago pero el 16 de junio será mi noche. No me intimida. Lo veo como cualquier boxeador aunque dicen que es más fuerte que Jafet Uutoni y Kosei Tanaka. In the first world title fight of 2018, WBO #2 jr featherweight Isaac Dogboe (18-0, 12 KOs) stopped WBO #1 Cesar “Corazon” Juarez (25-6, 15 KOs) in round five to claim the vacant WBO interim title on Saturday night at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana. Dogboe dropped Juarez in round two, and battered him for the remaining two minutes. Juarez recovered well and round three was toe-to-toe. Juarez was floored again in round five. He beat the count, but was in bad shape and the bout was stopped by referee Tony Weeks. Time was 2:12.

Dogboe is now in line to face the WBO’s full champion Jessie Magdaleno, who had to pull out of a fight against Juarez due to a wrist injury. “Jessie Magdaleno, I’m coming for you!” said a jubilant Dogboe after the fight.

Sadam Ali still can make the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.
The newly crowned WBO super welterweight champion recognizes, however, that he has much more business leverage at 154 pounds. That’s why Brooklyn’s Ali figures to defend that title in his next fight, rather than going back down to welterweight, the division within which he has competed for most of his career.
“Personally, I felt strong at 54,” Ali told BoxingScene.com. “I felt really good in there. I have the world title, so I don’t see why I should go back down.”

The 29-year-old Ali (26-1, 14 KOs) won that title by upsetting heavily favored Miguel Cotto (41-6, 33 KOs) by unanimous decision in the Puerto Rican icon’s farewell fight December 2 at Madison Square Garden. Since then, various 154-pounders, including former IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (36-2, 25 KOs) and WBC super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (30-0, 15 KOs), have called out Ali.
“Of course they’re gonna wanna call me out now,” Ali said. “They see that I’m just coming up to the weight class. They see that I have the world title. They might think that they have the chance to easily beat me, which they would be wrong. But I don’t blame anybody that’s interested in fighting me, just like I was interested in fighting Cotto. It was for a world title, against a legend. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Some people are looking at [fighting me] like it’s for a world title. Why wouldn’t they try to call me out or make the fight happen? They would like that.”
Ali would welcome the chance to box Brook if Brook wins his March 3 fight against Belarus’ Siarhei Rabchanka (29-2, 22 KOs) in Sheffield, England, Brook’s hometown.
“That would be a great fight,” Ali said. “But that’s also something I would leave with Golden Boy [Promotions]. I don’t know, honestly, who I’ll be fighting. I’m really aiming big. A lot of people might think, ‘Oh, Sadam won’t be ready. He won’t be able to handle it.’ But I’m talking bigger fights, guys like Pacquiao, Canelo. I like big challenges and like I said, I fear nothing but God. It would be amazing to have a huge fight like that, and I feel like I would do fine.”

Former WBO welterweight Super Champion Manny Pacquiao has made the rank of full Colonel in the Philippines Army.

Pacquiao (59-7-2, 38 KOs) lost his WBO title in defeat to the Australian Jeff Horn in July 2017, and while the Philippines fighter is hoping for a rematch, he took to social media to announce he made the step up from Lieutenant Colonel.

11 years after joining the armed forces, he posed with members of the army on Wednesday to celebrate the occasion.

IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is hoping to fight at least three to four times per year.

Because of drawn out negotiations, Golovkin has only fought twice twice per year in 2016 and 2017. Prior to that, he was fighting three to four times a year.

In 2017, he won a very close twelve round unanimous over Daniel Jacobs in March at New York’s Madison Square Garden, and then came back in September to fight to a twelve round split draw with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

There are ongoing discussions for Golovkin to face Canelo in a rematch on May 5th, likely at T-Mobile. Both sides are on board with the fight, but right now it’s all about the financial terms coming together.

Last month, Canelo was officially  made the mandatory challenger to Golovkin’s WBC title. The next fighter in line for a crack at that belt is undefeated contender Jermall Charlo.

If that rematch falls through, then Golovkin would like to unify all of the middleweight belts – and there is only one remaining, the WBO title.

Next month, WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders will travel to Canada to defend his title against former IBF champion David Lemieux. Golovkin stopped Lemieux two years ago to pick up the IBF strap.

Saunders has already made it clear that if he beats Lemieux, then the next fight he wants would be Golovkin – unless GGG was defeated by Canelo.

“I would love to fight three or four times a year but I know it’s difficult. If Canelo does not want the fight, then obviously I would love to unify. I can not put pressure on the WBO champion but if he wants I will be willing because my dream is to have all the titles,” Golovkin said to ESPN Deportes.

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Manny Pacquiao no sólo tuvo que disputar los 12 asaltos en una pelea en que era considerado el amplio favorito. El filipino terminó perdiendo el cetro welter de la Organización Mundial de Boxeo por un fallo unánime pero controversial.

No era precisamente lo que esperaba el entrenador de Pacquiao ni el púgil 11 veces monarca mundial, cuyo futuro ha quedado ahora en la incertidumbre.

Freddie Roach, el entrenador de Pacquiao, sugirió que su pupilo de años lograría un nocaut “rápido y dulce” en el combate del domingo, denominado “Batalla de Brisbane. En vez de ello, el local Jeff Horn se impuso por puntos en su primer pleito por un título mundial, ante el delirio de 51.052 espectadores.

El también senador filipino de 38 años llegó a esta ciudad australiana una semana antes de la pelea, en un vuelo fletado que transportaba a más de un centenar de seguidores. Se marcha sin el cinturón de la OMB.

Los tres jueces dieron la victoria a Horn. El estadounidense Waleska Roldan dio 117-111, su compatriota Chris Flores entregó una anotación de 115.113, al igual que el argentino Ramón Cerdán.

Varios críticos consideraron localista el fallo. Destacan las estadísticas según las cuales Pacquiao propinó dos veces más golpes de poder que su adversario.

“Es la decisión de los jueces y la respeto”, comentó Pacquiao, citado por ESPN. “Tenemos una cláusula de revancha, así que no hay problema”.

En ese sentido, el futuro próximo del filipino sería un nuevo enfrentamiento ante el australiano. Más allá de eso, el panorama no es tan claro.

Durante la semana, Roach había dicho que Pacquiao tendría dos alternativas después de enfrentar a Horn: Buscar un segundo combate frente a Floyd Mayweather o contemplar el retiro.

“Manny está en una situación en que debe ganar. Quiere una revancha con Mayweather”, comentó Roach. “Con Mayweather hay que lucir bien ante un rival, hay que impresionar”.

Difícilmente “Money” Mayweather está impresionado.

El entrenador de acondicionamiento físico de Pacquiao, Justin Fortune, no se guardó los comentarios negativos hacia los jueces.

“Manny perdió la pelea, pero Jeff Horn parece una calabaza”, dijo Fortune en referencia al rostro enrojecido, hinchado y ensangrentado de su compatriota australiano. “¿Qué hay entonces con esas anotaciones, con esas tarjetas? Estaban al revés”.

No obstante, Fortune aceptó que Pacquiao debió haber conjurado el riesgo de un fallo controversial.

“Cuando peleas en casa de otro, necesitas hacer más cosas. Es mejor noquearlo”, comentó. “Así es el boxeo. A veces te da y en otras te quita. Pero cuando vienes a casa de alguien debes tener mejores argumentos y nunca dejar esto en manos de los jueces”.

Horn comenzó fuerte y ganó al menos tres de los primeros cinco asaltos en las anotaciones. Pero Pacquiao, quien recibió dos veces atención por una cortada en la cabeza (en el sexto y séptimo round), pareció dominar las hostilidades desde el octavo.

Estuvo cerca de finiquitar el pleito en el noveno, cuando golpeó de forma inclemente a Horn, quien se tambaleó. Incluso el réferi Mark Nelson preguntó al local si podía seguir.

El exprofesor de escuela, de 29 años, respondió afirmativamente. Confiaba en que tenía la ventaja en las tarjetas.

“Desde luego me sentía algo aturdido, pero… tenía que continuar”, indicó. “No me doy por vencido. Los australianos no se rinden para empezar. Hemos demostrado que somos unos ganadores. Fue la verdadera Batalla de Brisbane, absolutamente increíble”.

El copromotor Bob Arum consideró que “fue una pelea apretada, que pudo ser para cualquiera”.

“Hubo un par de rounds apretados, pero no se puede discutir con el resultado”, manifestó. “Hice la anotación y vi que Jeff ganó muchos de los primeros rounds. Luego vi que Manny había repuntado a la mitad de la pelea. Jeff realmente ganó el duodécimo. Si le das a Manny el 11, tienes un empate, si le das a Jeff el 11, es 7-5”.

Roach no está tan seguro ahora de que sea el momento del retiro. Tampoco Horn considera que Pacquiao vaya a alejarse pronto de los cuadriláteros.

“Estoy seguro de que querrá volver. Fue una decisión cerrada, y estoy seguro de que él quiere regresar y demostrar algo”, dijo.

Arum confirmó que hay una cláusula de revancha. Sin embargo, aclaró que esperará antes de hablar con Pacquiao sobre el tema.

“No conozco la postura de Manny en el futuro. ¿Va a seguir en la política y a dejar el boxeo? No lo sé y él tampoco”, sentenció Arum. “Sería injusto preguntarle ahora”.
