Juan Carlos Burgos Decisions Luis Cruz Over Ten

MGM Grand, Las Vegas – Juan Carlos Burgos (28-1, 19KOs) won a ten round majority decision over previously undefeated Luis Cruz (19-1, 15KOs). The scores were 95-95, 97-93 and 98-92 for Burgos, who captures the WBO Latino junior lightweight championship.

After a fairly even first round, Burgos opened up in the second and stunned Cruz. Burgos dominated the third round, landing combinations and shaking Cruz up on more than one occasion. Cruz began to pick up the pace in the fourth. He was taking the punches better and started boxing smart with calculated counters in the fifth. By the seventh, Cruz’s right eye was swelling shut. The action was close in the late rounds, but Burgos had the slight edge due to his accurate punches and a good left hand that barely missed.

HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” will air the Nov. 26 WBO junior lightweight world title match between Cincinnati native Adrien “The Problem” Broner and and his new opponent, Argentina’s Vicente Rodriguez at U.S. Bank Arena. The fight had been announced Sept. 6 as  a mandatory match with WBO junior lightweight title-holder Ricky Burns of Scotland. Burns has relinquished the title to step up to the lightweight division.

Broner will promote his quest for the vacant title at a 2 p.m. Tuesday press conference at the arena.

The RingTV sitesays Burns is stepping up to the the lightweight division and facing Australian Michael Katsidis at Wembley Arena, London, on Nov. 5. The site says: “Dismissing talk he relinquished his WBO junior lightweight title last month to avoid facing unbeaten American Adrien Boner (21-0, 17 knockouts) — rather than over the issue of making the 130-pound limit — Burns (32-2, 9 KOs) insists that taking on Katsidis (28-4, 23 KOs), for the WBO interim lightweight belt, is a considerably stiffer proposition.”

Our Sept. 6 story said Broner, 22, was coming off consecutive HBO appearances in which he outpointed former champion Daniel Ponce de Leon in March, and scored a first-round knockout of Jason Litzau in June. The title fight will be Cincinnati’s first since Pryor beat Akio Kameda on a sixth-round technical knockout on July 4, 1982.

“Home for the Holidays: Broner vs. Rodriguez” is a 12-round bout for the vacant WBO Junior Lightweight World Title which will take place Saturday, November 26 at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The evening of boxing is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and R&R Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and AT&T.

The WBO Latino Jr. Lightweight and undefeated Luis “El Artesano” Cruz stated today that he is physically fit, just days before his showdown against Antonio Davis. The fight will be the co-main event for the clash between Yuriorkis Gamboa and Daniel Ponce de León, this coming Saturday, September 10th, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

“I am in excellent physical condition for this next fight. I prepare very well for all of my fights, but since I was crowned Latino champion, each engagement is more challenging and more difficult. So we have worked hard for this one”, Cruz stated after finishing a workout for the media in the Caimito Gym in San Juan.

Cruz (18-0, 14 KOs) is focused on securing a convincing victory over Davis (28-6, 13 KOs), an experienced and seasoned fighter, a native of Atlanta, Georgia.

“I want to make a good impression in my victory this coming Saturday in Atlantic City. From now on every fight means a lot and I will be in the center of many eyes. I will be crowned world champion. I will beat Davis convincingly. I have trained with my trainer Freddy Trinidad and we have a good strategy,” predicted Cruz.

On his experience fighting at 130 pounds, Cruz emphasized once more that he feels stronger.

“I can tell you that I feel stronger and faster at 130 pounds. I make my meals normally but with smaller portions”, stated Cruz, who began his career at 126 pounds. Cruz finally talked about his future after this fight.

“The first step now is to beat Davis strongly. We should be back in the ring on November 12 on Pacquiao-Marquez 3, which is good for me because I will be seen on a mega fight card with a great opportunity for the fans to see me in action. Accra, Oct. 16, GNA – Ghana’s Osumanu Akaba defeated Beninoi Theodore Lokossou on Sunday to clinch the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Super featherweight title at the Lebanon House, Tudu in Accra.

Lokossou retired in the seventh round as Akaba cruised to a Technical Knockout (TKO) victory on the main bout of the promotion dubbed: “Only the strong” and put together by Heart of Lions Boxing Promotions.

Akaba, 31, fighting for the first in 12 months was off-colour but gradually warmed himself into the course of the bout. Lokossou, twice loser against the Ghanaian had other things in mind as he opted to entertain the crowd with his body antics.

“I have disciplined him very well and I do not think, he will consider facing me again. I am looking forward to the title,” Akaba said after the bout.

As early as the second round, the ‘Golden Boy’ was in the lead as the Beninoi had no antidote to the flurry of punches visited on his face and body.

Lokossou made a serious impact in the early stages of the third round as he opened fire on his Ghanaian opponent forcing the latter to find solace on the ropes, but did not last.

Cautious-Akaba threw in everything from the fifth round as he attacked from the beginning till the end with the sixth round inclusive. His combination of punches and hooks dazed Lokossou, but he was saved by the bell in both the fifth and sixth rounds.

As expected, the Beninoi bowed out in the seventh round giving the ‘Golden Boy’ his 27th victory of his career.

Akaba was decorated with the title by Andrew Smale, Vice President of WBO Africa assisted by Samir Captan, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority and Godwin Kwame Ahiakpor, Chairman of Heart of Lions Boxing Promotions.
