Puerto Rican star chasing more history – if she hits seventh heaven next Friday in New York

Amanda Serrano says she can win World titles in EIGHT weight divisions – but first must defeat Eva Voraberger for the vacant WBO Super-Flyweight title at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, New York on Friday January 18 to land a World title in her seventh weight class live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW FROM WWW.MSG.COM – TICKETS START AT $46!

Serrano guns for seventh heaven when she meets the Austrian in the Big Apple and the Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican star can surpass Mexican legend and six-weight world champion Oscar De La Hoya – and will not rule out joining Manny Pacquiao as an eight-weight ruler in the future, saying weight is no obstacle thanks to her frame and work-ethic.

“As a Puerto Rican, there’s a rivalry with Mexico so I want to beat Oscar’s number next week!” said Serrano. “Maybe we should then go for Pacquiao and hit an eighth weight?

“I haven’t really sat down and acknowledged what I’ve done. My trainer tells me it’s huge and that being the third fighter to win World titles at seven weights is amazing. A little Latina from Bushwick can make history, it’s great.

“The weight is not an issue when you have a great team behind you. My MMA coach came to California to help with my nutrition to drop the weight down so it’s been fun really, I have been trying new things anyway and saw how fast the weight was coming down.

“I’m a small girl so it’s better for me to drop weight rather than go up in weight but with hard work and dedication I feel I can go up and down in weights. My last fight was at 140 where I had to run less and eat more, so this has just been the opposite of that. I always train hard and I’m in the gym 365 days a year.

“Eva’s a champion, she’s signed on the dotted line so she’s coming to fight – I just can’t wait for next Friday so I can have me some burger! My team have watched her, they come up with the gameplan and I work hard to put that plan into practice in the ring.”

Serrano’s clash with Voraberger is a DiBella Entertainment bout in association with Matchroom Boxing USA and is part of a three World title fight bill, topped by Demetrius Andrade’s first defense of his WBO World Middleweight title against Russian Artur Akavov and Irishman TJ Doheny’s maiden defense of his IBF World Super-Bantamweight title.

Former World Lightweight ruler Jorge Linares continues his comeback trail on the card when he meets Pablo Cesar Cano. Linares’ (45-4 28KOs) reign as WBA and Ring Magazine champion was ended in an epic clash with pound-for-pound star Vasily Lomachenko at Madison Square Garden in May, with Linares felling the Ukrainian star in the sixth before being stopped four rounds later.

Linares returned to winning ways in September with a third round stoppage win over Abner Cotto in September in California and starts 2019 with his 50th pro fight against Cano (31-7-1 21KOs), the Mexican former World title challenger who landed the WBC International Silver strap in his last outing in September – and Linares is joined by fellow Golden Boy Boxing star Alexis Rocha (12-0 8KOs), the 21 year old Welterweight talent ready to begin his charge for titles in 2019.

Long Island favorite and former World ruler Chris Algieri (22-3 8KOs) steps up his pursuit of regaining his World champion status at Super-Lightweight as he faces fellow New Yorker Danny Gonzalez (17-1-1 7KOs), while one of Matchroom Boxing USA’s rising stars tastes his first action in 2019 on the card as Reshat Mati (2-0 1KO) returns to the scene of his last outing in October where the ‘Albanian Bear’ went the four round distance in his second fight.

On Friday, January 18 at the Hulu Theater located at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Puerto Rico’s Amanda ‘The Real Deal’ Serrano (35- 1-1, 26 KOs) will face the interim world champion of the World Boxing Council at 118 pounds, Eva Voraberger (24-5 11KOs) of Austria – and their contest is scheduled for the vacant world title of the World Boxing Organization at 115-pounds.

In victory, she will become the first woman to win world titles in seven weight classes in professional boxing. Serrano has won world titles at 118, 122, 126, 130, 135 and 140 pounds

The fight will be broadcast live by streaming service DAZN in the United States and Puerto Rico. In the United Kingdom it will be broadcast on Sky Sports.

“I’m super excited to be able to make history together with the biggest and best platform there is right now, that is DAZN,” said Serrano, “Being part of the best makes you want to level up and we will do it together.”

“My opponent is a 118-pound world champion and will go down to 115 pounds to face me and I respect her a lot because the one that was champion, Raja Amasheh, walked away and left the title vacant to not fight with me. On January 18, I’ll come looking for the knockout and to leave with an explosive victory on behalf of my beautiful island of Puerto Rico. We will make history together!

“There is no doubt that Amanda Serrano is the best pound-for-pound fighter in women’s boxing and one of the most successful fighters in the sport, regardless of gender. In fighting for a championship in her seventh weight category, Amanda is again Showing his desire to pursue greatness, thanks to DAZN and Eddie Hearn for believing in Amanda’s talent and providing her with this platform, ” said Amanda’s promoter, Lou DiBella.

The main event of the card will feature WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade defending his belt against Artur Akavov.

Today’s press conference featured fighters competing in streaming action this Saturday on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING COUNTDOWN (7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT) as five-division world champion Amanda Serrano attempts to win a world title in her record sixth weight class when she faces Yamila Esther Reynoso for the WBO 140-pound title at the Barclays Center. The social media offering will be available on SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and on the SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook Page.

AMANDA SERRANO

“I’m so thankful to have this great opportunity to make history again. I’m going to put on a tremendous show like I always do and give my hometown fans something to cheer for.

“Come Saturday night, I’m super excited to grab this title in a sixth division. It puts me up there with two of the best fighters of all time in Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao. I’ve won all of my titles by knockout and I have to keep that streak going on Saturday night.

“Winning this fight is everything. I hope that I’m doing something great for young Latinas coming up in the sport. I’m going to continue to break down these barriers and one day cement my legacy in the Hall of Fame.”

YAMILA REYNOSO
“I’m very proud to be in this position. I feel relaxed because I know my team has worked hard to get me to this big fight in the U.S.

“I can box or brawl. I like to keep my options open and see what the fight calls for. I’m here to put on a good show.

“I have studied Amanda Serrano and I feel like I know her well. She’s a great world champion with a lot of experience, but I’m ready for anything she brings.”

There’s chasing greatness then there’s chasing greatness and catching it. Once you get to a certain pinnacle in your career, the really good ones look to be great. Enter Puerto Rico’s own Amanda Serrano. A female fighter that has had quite an amazing career. The only Puerto Rican fighter to win a title in five divisions.

Serrano will be making her return to ring after a long break from the sport. She last fought in November scoring a TKO victory over Marilyn Hernandez. Afterwards she took a hiatus from the sport, she began to train for MMA, her new challenge. You would think she wouldn’t box again but don’t tell her that.

She will return to the ring on September 8th to face Yamila Esther Reynoso for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight Title. It will be an opportunity to win a title in her sixth division.

Here’s the thing. Her last bout was at super bantamweight, she will be moving up a whopping four divisions!

She’s already great and has achieved greatness in the ring, this is about enhancing her legacy. She’s already cemented her name in the history books, this about adding another chapter to what’s already a great story. She doesn’t get the attention of her male counterparts, not even close to receiving the the same amount of money.

This is about someone that gets in the ring because she loves it.

She has earned all the success she has had, she works hard and is constantly in the gym. She pushes herself and the ones that do, usually do great things. Her idol is Miguel Cotto who has held belts in four different divisions, she’s already surpassed that and looks to add to her lead.

She has an illustrious nine year career but she’s not done yet.

She will be chasing history once again, come September 8th but don’t think she’s done yet! She has dared to be great and achieved it.

What’s next after September 8th? What bout her stepping back into cage? That’s the game plan she has publicly spoke about, that’s not just about being great, that’s pushing to do great things.

NEW YORK – August 9, 2018 – Amanda Serrano will fight for a world title in a sixth weight division on Saturday, September 8 at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™. Brooklyn’s Serrano will face Yamila Esther Reynoso for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight World Championship. If successful, Serrano will set a women’s boxing record as a six-division world champion, joining Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya as the only boxers, male or female, to reach the mark.

SHOWTIME Sports will live-stream Serrano vs. Reynoso as part of undercard coverage on the network’s social media platforms. SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING COUNTDOWN begins live at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT on the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page. The live stream precedes a three-fight SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, SHOWTIME) headlined by Danny Garcia vs. Shawn Porter for the welterweight world championship.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING COUNTDOWN, the network’s seventh social media offering of live boxing in 2018, is available to all domestic users with internet access. The livestream is hosted by Ray Flores with Chris Mannix serving as analyst.

Serrano (34-1-1, 26 KOs), who is already the only woman to win titles in five weight classes, is looking to best her personal record. Born in Carolina, Puerto Rico and representing her hometown of Brooklyn, Serrano has won titles from 118 to 135 pounds, earning her the No. 2 ranking on the BWAA’s inaugural women’s pound-for-pound list. The 29-year-old is also the only Puerto Rican – male or female – to capture world titles in five different weight classes and will look to build on that record against Reynoso. She fights for the fifth time in her career at Barclays Center on September 8 with a chance to once again make history again in front of the passionate fan base of Puerto Rican boxing fans in New York.

“I’m super excited to be fighting for a world title in my sixth weight class,” said Serrano. “My opponent is really a welterweight, having defended her Argentinean 147-pound title by knockout in her last fight, and is dropping down one division to face me. I am coming up four divisions for this shot. I’m sure Reynoso will rehydrate back up to her natural weight after the weigh-in, but this is a risk worth taking. She’s never been stopped either, so I know she’s durable. This is a tremendous card to be a part of with Garcia vs. Porter as the main event. My promoter, Lou DiBella, has big things lined up for me, and I am eager to take on all challenges.”

Reynoso (11-4-3, 8 KOs), of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has challenged for world titles at 140 pounds and 154 pounds. The 22-year-old has most recently campaigned at welterweight, where she held the Argentina 147-pound title, and will be moving back down in weight for her third shot at a world title. Reynoso, who will make her U.S. debut on September 8, has recorded all eight of her knockouts inside of five rounds.

“I’m very happy to be training for such a great opportunity for this WBO world title against a terrific champion in Amanda Serrano,” said Reynoso. “I am coming ready to give Serrano a real fight, and I look forward to capturing the title belt.”

“Amanda Serrano is one of the best pound-for-pound female boxers and one of the best boxers in the world, period,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “She is also now a two-sport athlete, embarking on her MMA career earlier this year. In the boxing ring, Serrano is a record-breaker, becoming the only female boxer to win world titles in five weight classes, and on September 8, she will attempt to break her own record, vying for a sixth division championship. I’m thrilled that the world will get to see Serrano make history once again with the bout being a part of the SHOWTIME live stream online.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, in association with DSG Promotions, start at $50 and are on sale now. Tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com, or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center.

Honor a quien honor merece.

WBO champion Amanda Serrano

Boxing is a sport that deserves more attention and recognition, especially in different countries where many times it takes a back seat, however, it is actually female boxing that urgently needs more support and promotion.

Female boxers such as Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano, has seen themselves in a position to open doors in this area, and she has taken advantage of that opportunity and role to demonstrate that women can conquer big goals in this sport as well as in any other discipline, they can give a great show on the ring and can also make history.

Earning a world championship title is not an easy task for anyone, and women in particular have many more obstacles to overcome and have to deal with many stereotypes, some of which are now in the past but many others that still remain and make it difficult for women to obtain opportunities of televised fights or purse amounts at least close to those of male bouts.

However, and at just 28-years-of-age, Amanda Serrano has not let the current reality stop her, she chose to make history, not just in her native Puerto Rico, but in the world of boxing and sports; she has earned the world championship belt in five different weight divisions, initially with the IBF in the super featherweight category and then with the WBO.

Serrano is currently the first and only woman to have won world titles in five weight-classes, 135, 130 (IBF), 126, 122 and 118 lbs, four of these titles were achieved with the WBO.

For this reason, this Thursday, May 4th, we will be honoring Amanda Serrano handing her the hard earned Female Bantamweight World Championship Belt and the corresponding World Champion Ring.

The World Boxing Organization is proud to have someone as strong and determined as Amanda representing our organization; she has become a role model for many other young women who dream of practicing this demanding sport and also for those that have their eyes set on different male-dominated sports or industries.

True fighters like Amanda, give us the motivation as a World Organization to continue to provide opportunities for female boxers so that the sport continues to grow, and with this we have the possibility of contributing to change the lives of many young women and change the way society sees women in combat sports.

Congratulations Amanda Serrano for making history, the WBO is proud of being part of these achievements!

NEW YORK – Amanda Serrano became women’s boxing’s first five-division world champion Saturday night.

The southpaw from Brooklyn defeated Dahiana Santana by eighth-round technical knockout to win the vacant WBO women’s bantamweight championship on the Andre Berto-Shawn Porter undercard in Brooklyn. Serrano’s win was televised by SHO Extreme from Barclays Center.

Serrano (32-1-1, 24 KOs) was dominant during the scheduled 10-round bout. Referee Benjy Esteves eventually had seen Santana take too much punishment and stepped in to stop the fight, with Santana on her feet, at 1:14 of the eighth round.

“It means everything to me,” a crying Serrano told Showtime’s Jim Gray in the ring after her win. “I worked so hard for this. … To be the first female and the first Puerto Rican to do so, I’m so proud to be a Puerto Rican. … I’m the happiest woman alive.”

Serrano spent much of the fight landing power punches to the wild-swinging Santana’s head. Serrano noticeably hurt the Dominican Republic’s Santana with a right-left combination and a body shot during the seventh round.

Serrano got a little reckless in the fourth round, which allowed Santana to stun her with a left hook. Serrano regained her composure quickly, though, and continued connecting to Santana’s head.

Esteves deducted a point from Santana later in the fourth for excessive holding. A ringside physician took a close look at Santana following the fourth round, but allowed her to continue.

Serrano, 28, previously owned the WBO super bantamweight, WBO featherweight, WBO lightweight and IBF super featherweight titles. Santana, 32, slipped to 35-9 (14 KOs).

Following Serrano’s fight, Brooklyn’s Richardson Hitchins (2-0, 1 KOs) dominated Puerto Rico’s Alexander Picot (2-3-1) to win a unanimous decision in their four-round welterweight fight. The 19-year-old Hitchins, who represented Haiti at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Jainero, won by the same score, 40-36, on all three scorecards.

The taller, stronger backed up a game but overmatched Picot throughout their fight, but didn’t knock him down.

amanda-serrano Saturday night, on Showtime Extreme (7:30 EST), boxer Amanda Serrano competes for the chance to become the first Puerto Rican fighter and the first woman to win world titles in five weight divisions.Amanda Westcott/SHO –

When Amanda Serrano graduated from Bushwick High School ten years ago, she wasn’t busy filling out college applications or chasing boys in her Brooklyn neighborhood.

The Puerto Rican born Serrano had seen her older sister Cindy become an accomplished boxer and decided to follow in her footsteps. Without telling family members, she signed up for the New York Golden Gloves.

But the news didn’t go over well with her sister or her brother-in-law Jordan Maldonaldo who owned boxing gyms in the area.

The pair attempted to unnerve the young hopeful with some unorthodox methods.

The pair attempted to unnerve the young hopeful with some unorthodox methods.

“He had my sister beat me up to discourage me from going into the sport,” recalls Serrano.

“But she couldn’t beat me up. I kept on coming back. I was actually ready for it.”

Fast forward a decade and the 28-year-old’s resume shows just how ready she was that fateful day. The 5 foot 5 lefty is now nicknamed “The Real Deal” and has a record of 31-1-1 with 23 KOs. She and her 34-year-old sister — who are sometimes referred to as the Williams Sisters of Boxing — have landed in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first female siblings to become World Champions at the same time in a major organization.

On Saturday night, she’s looking to make history when she takes on Dahiana Santana at the Barclays Center for the WBO bantamweight title. If she wins, Serrano will become both the first woman and first Puerto Rican fighter in history to capture a fifth world title in five different weight classes.

Her collection of belts already include a lightweight, super featherweight, featherweight and super bantamweight titles.

Bouncing around to different weight classes means her fighting weight has fluctuated anywhere from 135 to 118 pounds.

For this matchup, Serrano gave up her beloved chocolate chip cookies and bread for two months.

“This time I ate a little less than I usually eat,” she explains. “It’s pretty much a high protein, no carbs. My trainer Jordan knows nutrition and how to cut weight. I feel good. I feel strong.”

She already has her sights set on a bulkier belt.

”Hopefully after this, I can go up to 140 pounds and win another division,” she says.

In a way, boxing fame is a strange path for Serrano, who admits that she was clueless about the sport before her sister put on gloves to get into shape after giving birth. Cindy’s then-boyfriend, Maldonado, saw her potential and molded her into a pro boxer before her younger sibling’s eyes.

009-img_6787

“I was never a boxing fan. I didn’t know anything about it,” says Amanda. “The only boxing match I remember was the Trinidad Oscar De La Hoya fight [in 1999] because my parents had a party at the house, but I didn’t watch it. I was outside playing.”

Amanda Serrano (left) and sister Cindy.

Though she caught the bug from watching her sister pound opponents, Serrano’s decision to enter the ring still devastated her mother, who didn’t want her youngest child fighting.

“It took a while for my mom to come [to fights], but she now shows me off. My dad has always been at my fights from the beginning.”

While her mother has come around to her career, one thing has never changed: The pretty brunette is still not chasing boys. In fact, she’s so focused on her career she has never a boyfriend in her life.

“I started [boxing] very young and Jordan and my sister were together for 18 years and brought me up the right way. He’s like my dad. I’m 100 percent in my career right now. Once I am done and retired I will have plenty of time for hanging out and boyfriends. I don‘t need the distractions right now,” says Serrano — who has also never had a cell phone to text boys from.

That’s not to say there haven’t been wannabe suitors.

“They can be intimidated. A lot of people ask Jordan, ‘Can I ask her out on a date?’ He says, ‘You can, but you know the answer is going to be no.’”

Serrano fights former world champion Dahiana Santana for the WBO Bantamweight World Championship on Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., on Showtime Extreme.

“Oh my god!

i  i-1  Amanda Serrano, right, won on all cards to retain the WBO junior featherweight title in front of her hometown crowd in Brooklyn, N.Y. Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment

NEW YORK — Amanda Serrano defeated Yazmin Rivas by unanimous decision to retain the WBO junior featherweight title Saturday night in the first nationally televised English-language women’s world title bout in the United States since 2007.

The judges scored the fight 97-93, 98-92, 99-91 to give Serrano the victory at Barclays Center in her hometown of Brooklyn.

The Puerto Rico-born Serrano (31-1-1, 23 KOs) landed 33 percent of her punches while Rivas (35-10-1, 10 KOs) landed just 20 percent, according to CompuBox, as the two women went the distance in the 10-round bout.

“We wanted the knockout, but I was ready for 10 rounds,” Serrano said. “People who think I’m just a brawler saw that I’m a great boxer today.”

Rivas, who took home $15,000 for the fight, still has yet to be knocked out in her professional career, while Serrano, who took home $17,500, carried a knockout percentage of 72 heading into the matchup — a rate unrivaled among the top women fighting in the junior featherweight division.

Still, Serrano went after Rivas aggressively throughout the fight, throwing 431 power punches and landing 177 (44 percent), while Rivas threw nearly 100 fewer and landed only 29 percent (97 of 332).

“She hit hard, but I hit her harder,” Serrano said. “I could hear her breathing in between rounds and I knew I had her.

“It was a great night for women’s boxing, and I hope it keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

The three judges scored all 10 rounds within a one-point margin, with their scorecards reflecting Serrano’s dominance in the middle rounds and strong performance in the final round to close it out.

“It was an excellent fight,” Rivas said. “I knew everything was against me and to win I had to knock her out. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen today.”

Serrano’s victory aired on Showtime Extreme, a subnetwork of Showtime, on the undercard of the network’s doubleheader headlined by the Badou Jack-James DeGale super middleweight world title unification bout.

The last women’s world title fight on English-language television in the U.S. was Mary Jo Sanders’ defeat of Valerie Mahfood by unanimous decision to retain her International Boxing Association female middleweight title on March 30, 2007, on ESPN2.

A week before that fight, Fox Sports Net televised Holly Holm defeating Ann Saccurato to win the IBA female world welterweight title, the WBC female world welterweight title, the WBA world female welterweight title and the International Female Boxers Association world welterweight title.

Serrano-Rivas also was the first women’s fight on a Showtime network (non-pay-per-view) since 2000.

It is finally official… Amanda Serrano (26-1-1, 19 KOs) has signed a promotional contract with DiBella Entertainment.

We have already known that Serrano will be featured in a 10 round Featherweight clash with Ghana’s Helen Joseph (12-3-1, 7 KOs) on the stacked January 16th Deontay Wilder WBC title defense against Artur Szpilka at the Barclays Center. Today, it was also announced that the #WomenofBoxingbout will be for the vacant WBO Featherweight World Championship.

“The Real Deal” Serrano is no stranger to high level title bouts, having captured the IBF Super Featherweight crown in 2011with her 2nd Round TKO over Kimberly Connor. She has also claimed the UBF and WIBA Featherweight titles in 2013 with a 1st Round stoppage over Wanda Pena Ozuna prior to winning the WBO Lightweight championship in 2014 by way of 6th Round KO of Maria Elena Maderna.

Serrano will come prepared for war as normal as she comes to entertain her Brooklyn and global fans on January 16th.

“Iron Lady” Joseph is coming off of a hard fought decision loss to Jennifer Han for the IBF Featherweight title. That was he second attempt at the IBF crown, with a decision loss also to Dominican Republic’s Dahiana Santana in 2012.

Joseph has not been stopped in her career, which is something Serrano specializes in. Serrano has stopped 10 of her last 11 opponents.

Can Joseph withstand the Real Deal bombs?
