WBO champion Amanda Serrano

Boxing is a sport that deserves more attention and recognition, especially in different countries where many times it takes a back seat, however, it is actually female boxing that urgently needs more support and promotion.

Female boxers such as Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano, has seen themselves in a position to open doors in this area, and she has taken advantage of that opportunity and role to demonstrate that women can conquer big goals in this sport as well as in any other discipline, they can give a great show on the ring and can also make history.

Earning a world championship title is not an easy task for anyone, and women in particular have many more obstacles to overcome and have to deal with many stereotypes, some of which are now in the past but many others that still remain and make it difficult for women to obtain opportunities of televised fights or purse amounts at least close to those of male bouts.

However, and at just 28-years-of-age, Amanda Serrano has not let the current reality stop her, she chose to make history, not just in her native Puerto Rico, but in the world of boxing and sports; she has earned the world championship belt in five different weight divisions, initially with the IBF in the super featherweight category and then with the WBO.

Serrano is currently the first and only woman to have won world titles in five weight-classes, 135, 130 (IBF), 126, 122 and 118 lbs, four of these titles were achieved with the WBO.

For this reason, this Thursday, May 4th, we will be honoring Amanda Serrano handing her the hard earned Female Bantamweight World Championship Belt and the corresponding World Champion Ring.

The World Boxing Organization is proud to have someone as strong and determined as Amanda representing our organization; she has become a role model for many other young women who dream of practicing this demanding sport and also for those that have their eyes set on different male-dominated sports or industries.

True fighters like Amanda, give us the motivation as a World Organization to continue to provide opportunities for female boxers so that the sport continues to grow, and with this we have the possibility of contributing to change the lives of many young women and change the way society sees women in combat sports.

Congratulations Amanda Serrano for making history, the WBO is proud of being part of these achievements!

Monserrat Alarcón New WBO Champion

Mexican native, Monserrat Alarcón was crowned as the new WBO Female World Flyweight Champion after defeating Japanese Nana Yoshikawa in a fight that took place in Osaka, Japan this April 28th.

In the sixth round Alarcón suffered a deep cut over her left eye as a product of an accidental head clash, the fight was stopped in the seventh round and it went to the scorecards which showed: 62-70, 63-69 and 64-68 all in favor of Monserrat Alarcón.

WBO Congress 2017

Have you saved the date and start making arrangements to attend this year’s WBO’s Congress? It may seem like it’s still a long time away, but no, time flies and we need to make sure we are all on the same boat, or the same cruise ship for that matter.

As you’ve already been informed, this year the WBO Congress will take us on a cruise, leaving from Miami, Florida October 23 at 5 p.m. We will be holding our meetings as we navigate through the Caribbean, tough work, but someone has to do it; we will be making a stop in the beautiful island of Cuba, an island with rich pugilistic tradition and home to many boxing stars. Of course, it is not all about work, there is time for fun too, as the cruise takes us to visit the breathtaking Great Stirrup Cay, an idyllic private island part of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas… the only risk here is arriving back in Miami October 27th with less people aboard.

This unique and wonderful experience is just seven months away, but your confirmation and reservations need to be ready by August 4, which gives you 4 months to get your arrangements in place. Prepare for this just like a boxer prepares for a fight, with time and diligence.

Take into consideration that your passport needs to be up to date, with the proper U.S. visa if required, make sure to check the expiration date on your travel document. Another important fact to consider is that to enter Cuba all foreigners need to have a tourist card (Visa or Rosada), which needs to be obtained directly by you in your country of origin, or Norwegian cruise line can help you process it for a $75.00 fee. This must be done with enough time in order to avoid unexpected problems or delays, keep in mind that anyone that doesn’t have the Cuban transit card will NOT be allowed to board the vessel.

Don’t miss the boat, make sure you have all your documents and reservations in order and sail with the WBO.

For information on accommodations and costs please Contact Us.

WBO Kids Drug Free visits Panama and Colombia

Once again the WBO is proud to have had the opportunity to contribute through the Kids Drug Free program in different countries across the world. This time we visited Panama and Colombia to contribute with exemplary organizations that work every day to make a difference in the lives of many children.

Round 1: San José de Malambo Orphanage

As promised in January of this year, the WBO revisited this past Monday, March 6th, the San José de Malambo Orphanage in Panama, a non-governmental organization that looks out for children and teens in vulnerability conditions, this time with the purpose of donating backpacks that the children need to attend school.

Education is an important tool to keep children away from the streets; we sincerely admire the work done by the Sisters that run this institution and that give children here love, attention, and a chance of a better life.

Round 2: FUNVIVIR

Our next stop on Tuesday, March 7th, was in Cartagena, Colombia, where we were received by the dedicated personnel of FUNVIVIR, a non-profit organization founded in 2006 with the purpose of assisting children battling cancer and their families who have limited resources and many necessities that become more evident when dealing with the illness and undergoing treatment. The WBO had already visited this institution back in March of 2016.

The donation was given at the Bernardo Caraballo Coliseum. This organization was picked in life by our friend and colleague Luis Pérez, who recently passed away victim of cancer; this made the activity much more meaningful for all of us.

All children battling cancer are true fighters, especially when they are faced with limitations and difficult financial realities; the WBO congratulates FUNVIVIR for their wonderful work and joins them in their noble mission to alleviate the immediate needs of these young fighterscolombia

slo, Norway (January 23, 2017). First Lady Promotions has postponed the highly anticipated battle between Consensus #1 Women’s Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World and Undisputed Welterweight World Champion, CECILIA BRAEKHUS, (29-0-0, 8 KO’s) and Mandatory Challenger KLARA SVENSSON, (17-1-0, 5 KO’s) scheduled for this Saturday, January 28 to the new date of Friday, February 24.

Braekhus, holder of the WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO World Titles has been hit with the flu which will require a period of rest before the resumption of a full training schedule.

“I was in the best shape of my life before I got knocked out by the flu. This is the worst that can happen to a fighter so close to battle, but health and safety comes first of course,” said Cecilia Brækhus.

The entire event, planned for another sold-out night at the Oslo Spektrum, will now take place on Friday, February 24 with all tickets being honored for the new date.

Through Braekhus’ extensive lobbying work over the last several years, Norway lifted their 33-year ban on professional boxing in 2015. On October 1, 2016, Braekhus was finally able to fight in her home country, knocking out Anne Sophie Mathis in the second round, a national event that captivated the entire country.

Cecilia Braekhus vs. Klara Svensson postponed until February 24

By Elliot Foster

Liam Smith against Liam Williams was arguably the biggest highlight of Monday’s announcement regarding the BT Sport schedule. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed the super-welterweight clash as part of his deal between BoxNation, his own broadcaster, and the aforementioned BT Sport. Reports last week suggested that the fight would be for the vacant WBO super-welterweight world title.

That belt, however, is currently held by Mexico’s Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, who faces Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on May 6. And a media release from Frank Warren’s office, just hours after the schedule announcement for the next few months, revealed that the fight between the Liverpudlian –– who lost the WBO title to Alvarez in Texas last September –– and Clydach Vale’s Williams, on April 8 at Manchester Arena, exclusively live on BoxNation and BT Sport, will instead be for Williams’ WBO European title at 154 pounds.
