La empresa Zanfer se encuentra analizando varias formas de poder hacer boxeo profesional en estos tiempos, donde la pandemia de la enfermedad del coronavirus está afectando a todos los sectores.

Entre los planes está hacer veladas a puerta cerrada, es decir, sin público, y hasta un reality show, donde sólo habría el número de personas que permitan las restricciones sanitarias indicadas por el gobierno.

Una vez que se pueda hacer boxeo profesional, con esas estrategias, se tiene pensado hasta hacer funciones en días consecutivos.

«Con nuestro aliado estratégico, que es TV Azteca, siempre hemos sido muy inquietos, muy creativos y, sinceramente, sí hemos pensado en hacer boxeo sin audiencia», reveló Fernando Beltrán, tras unos cuestionamientos hechos por reporteros de un medio de comunicación regional.

«También pensamos en darle a la gente, ahora que está en sus casas, no sé, concentrar a dos contendientes del mismo peso, a lo mejor, no que peleen, pero sí hacer un cuatro comparativo de la forma de trabajar de cada uno», agregó.

Fernando Beltrán recordó que no se había organizado peleas de boxeo profesional, debido a las restricciones del gobierno, pero, si este, en su momento accede a realizar eventos con determinada cantidad de personas, la empresa se adaptaría.

«Vamos a concentrarlo en las mismas instalaciones de Tv Azteca, y darle al público una especial de reality show, breve, de lo que come un boxeador, lo que se cuida, las sesiones de entrenamiento, preparación física, y eso viene a darle el conocimiento al aficionado y nos ayudaría a todos», enfatizó.

Los boxeadores que estén listos, primeros en regresar

Una vez que las autoridades de salud den “luz verde” para hacer eventos profesionales de boxeo, Zanfer estará regresando de inmediato con los boxeadores que estén listo para pelear, así lo adelantó Fernando Beltrán.

«El boxeo es un deporte de hambre de todo tipo, como siempre lo hemos dicho. Yo creo que los boxeadores que estén listos, serán los mayores beneficiados en cuanto termine esto de la pandemia de la enfermedad del coronavirus», comentó el CEO de Zanfer.

«Yo estoy seguro de que muchos boxeadores están entrenando en sus casas, se están preparando y, sinceramente, en cuanto las autoridades consideren que ya se pueden hacer eventos masivos, todo mundo vamos estar programando, y vamos a tener filas de boxeadores tratando de programar», agregó.

La Temporada 2020 de Zanfer arrancó el 11 de enero en San Antonio, Texas, donde el tijuanense Jaime Munguía demostró que no sólo fue un sólido campeón mundial Superwelter, sino que es un serio contendiente en la división de los pesos Medios, al hacer su presentación en las 160 libras y noquear en 11 rounds a Gary O´Sullivan.

Y su última velada, antes del paro de funciones, por órdenes del sector salud, fue en Tijuana, teniendo como pelea estelar la victoria de Omar Aguilar, por nocaut, ante David Alegría.

LAS VEGAS — On June 4, junior lightweight titlist Francisco Vargas and former titleholder Orlando Salido battled to a draw in an epic action fight that is easily the leading contender for fight-of-the-year honors.

It was exactly what most expected as Vargas was coming off a dramatic comeback knockout of Takashi Miura to win the 130-pound belt in November in the 2015 fight of the year, and Salido is almost always in an exciting fight.

In fact, the fight with Vargas was Salido’s fourth consecutive ridiculous action fight, all of which were fight-of-the-year contenders. There were also two sick fights last year against Rocky Martinez (a loss and a draw, both debatable results) and an 11th-round knockout of Terdsak Kokietgym in a knockdown-filled slugfest.

The fight before Kokietgym, Salido scored a split-decision win against Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4 KOs), the brilliant two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist fighting for a featherweight title in only his second pro fight. Salido got the better of him, although not by much, in their March 2014 fight.

Now it’s time for Salido (43-13-4, 30 KOs), a fan favorite from Mexico, to figure out his next move. At 35 and with a ton of wars on his resume, he wants (and deserves) the biggest possible fight for the most amount of money.

A rematch with Vargas was the obvious move. However, Vargas was badly busted up in the fight and his team is not interested in an immediate rematch, and who can blame them? He will heal up and then look for a fight that won’t be nearly as demanding, with the potential for a rematch against Salido in the second half of 2017.

That makes the obvious match for Salido a rematch with Lomachenko, who moved up in weight and knocked out Martinez to win a junior lightweight title in June. He would love nothing more than to exact revenge on Salido. It is a fight that is certainly makeable with no promotional or television network entanglements.

Salido promoter Zanfer Promotions wants to make it. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, Lomachenko’s promoter, has designs on putting it together this fall, perhaps at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, site of Vargas-Salido. HBO, which aired the first fight, should have interest as it is in the Lomachenko business.

“Lomachenko is the fight that Orlando wants as long as he’s paid,” Sean Gibbons, Salido’s manager, told ESPN.com last week in the Terence Crawford-Viktor Postol media center at the MGM Grand. “At StubHub, the people will be there for him. At this point it’s strictly business. He’ll be 36 in November. At this point you want to make him the best fight for the most money.

“If he can’t get Lomachenko and get paid like he feels he should he will go to Mexico and have a stay-busy fight waiting for Vargas. That’s the fight people want to see. He’s finally in position to get paid. He has fought four fights in the last three years that were either fight of the year or candidates for fight of the year. The guy does not make a bad fight.”

Salido has taken short money plenty of times, but Gibbons said he would not do so again for rematches with either Vargas or Lomachenko. But he also said their side would not be unreasonable.

“We’re not Nicholas Walters,” Gibbons said, referring to the former featherweight titlist who turned down career-high money twice to avoid Lomachenko. “We’re here to make the fight, not kill the fight. Tell Bob to get creative. He’s a Hall of Fame promoter. He knows how to come up with the funds.”

Gibbons said whatever direction Salido goes in it should be figured out in the next week or so. Salido says he wants to fight Lomachenko again, especially with Vargas unavailable.

“You did not see the best Orlando Salido in the first fight [with Lomachenko]. I had issues with my weight and I want to put all doubts aside by beating Lomachenko again,” Salido told ESPN.com, referring to the fact that he missed weight and was stripped of his featherweight belt. “I am tired of hearing all the excuses why I beat him the first time.

“The media says it was his second fight. He chose to fight me too soon. Then they say it was the referee. Then they say it was the weight. Enough with all the excuses. Let’s do it again and I will show everyone how a real Mexican fights! I am not a Frankenstein boxer like Rocky Martinez. I have real skills and, at the end of the day, Lomachenko can make a million excuses for what happened the first time but he will see I have his number when we fight again. I have told my manager, Sean Gibbons, and my promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, go and get me the biggest and best fights that are out there.”

Salido also took a swipe at Vargas for the disinterest in an immediate rematch.

“I realize that Francisco Vargas does not have the heart of a real champion and give me the rematch I deserve so I turn to a fighter that wants to fight a real champion, Vasyl Lomachenko,” Salido said. “I have never ducked a challenge in my 20 years of boxing and I will not start now. This is how all the great ones have done it — Julio Caesar Chavez, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Israel Vasquez, Juan Manuel Marquez. Real Mexicans do not make excuses. They fight the fights the fans want to see.”

Mexican promoter Oswaldo Kuchle has informed BoxingScene.com/The Standard that he has “released Raul Garcia to fight Donnie Nietes, the WBO light flyweight champion and the longest reigning Filipino world champion” following the willingness of Zanfer Promotions Fernando Beltran to postpone the mandatory challenge of Moises Fuentes against Nietes for a more lucrative showdown at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California on September 24.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told The Standard that he first wants to “agree on what is going to be out there for Fuentes before we can agree on the Garcia fight.”

He said “if we fight Garcia in May we need to discuss the mandatory with Fuentes in September” before confirming the Nietes title defense against Raul Garcia, twin brother of Ramon Garcia Hirales from whom Nietes won the title by a unanimous twelve round decision at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City on October 8, 2011.

Aldeguer told us that fight fans in Bacolod were clamoring for Nietes to return to his hometown of Murcia which is on the outskirts of Bacolod. He said “people wanted the fight after all the accomplishments of Donnie.”

If the fight doesn’t take place in Bacolod Aldeguer said the alternative would be the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.

Aldeguer said Fernando Beltran said he had no objections to the proposal but hadn’t yet formally agreed since they also have to secure the approval of the World Boxing Organization president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel who had earlier directed Nietes to face Fuentes in a mandatory title defense which would be their third fight after Nietes demolished Fuentes on May 10, 2014, dropping him three times in the 9th round for a rousing knockout victory at
the Mall of Asia Arena along Manila Bay.

In suggesting that the Nietes-Fuentes mandatory be held in the US, Aldeguer was looking at a big fight with a wider American audience. However, he said if the proposal was disallowed by the WBC president, Nietes was ready to face Fuentes even in Mexico where he defended his minimum weight title successfully on several occasions against Mexican opponents in their own hometowns.

The 32 year old southpaw Raul “Rayito” Garcia who is ranked No. 11 by the WBO has a record of 36-3-1 with 22 knockouts. On June 14, 2008, he won the title from Filipino IBF Minimumweight champion Florante Condes in a somewhat controversial 12 round split decision after being dropped by Condes in the final round, in Garcia’s hometown of La Paz, Mexico.

Garcia defended his IBF title four times. He lost the IBF mini flyweight title against South African Nkosinathi Joyi on 26 March 2010 by a unanimous decision.

After losing his IBF title, Garcia went on to win the WBO interim minimumweight title on October 30, 2010 by a split decision against Luis dela Rosa. He was scheduled to face Donnie Nietes on March 12, 2011 for the full championship, however, just two weeks prior to the fight date, Nietes announced that he would be vacating his world title and moving up in weight which resulted in “Rayito” Garcia being elevated to full champion.

On May 30, 2011, he successfully defended the title for the first time by third round TKO against Filipino Rommel Asenjo. Garcia and his brother Ramón made history that on this night when they became the first set of twin brothers to win world title fights on the same card.

Prior to commencing the Purse Bid, Mr. Peter Rivera made note that a Complaint had been sent regarding the designation of Miguel Berchelt as Mandatory Challenger for Roman “Rocky” Martinez in the 130 pound division because such designation did not meet the requirements of WBO Regulations of World Championship Contests. He also stated that Roman Martinez had a contract with the Showtime Network for a match facing Orlando Salido on March 12, 2016.

The intention was to stop the Purse Bid.

President Francisco Valcarcel presided the Purse Bid and stated for the record that the designation of Miguel Berchelt as the 130 lbs. Mandatory Challenger had been made during the WBO Convention on October 29, 2015 in Orlando, Florida. Furthermore, he stated that Mr. Peter Rivera, representing Roman Martinez, as well as Mr. Sean Gibbons, representing Orlando Salido, had accepted the Mandatory Challenger designation and had pledged that the winner of the bout between Roman Martinez and Orlando Salido would face within 120 days of the bout the Mandatory Challenger, Miguel Berchelet.

That at the time, neither Mr. Rivera nor Mr. Gibbons, protested the appointment of Mr. Berchelet as Challenger.

That the Championship Committee voted and approved Mr. Peter Rivera’s request for a Martinez-Salido III bout and that the winner had to face the designated Mandatory Challenger, Miguel Berchelt, within 120 days.

President Valcarcel stated for the record that Mr. Peter Rivera did not have any commitment with the Showtime Network for a March 12, 2016 bout, nor had he had one for February 20, 2016.

Mr. Valcarcel added that both Sean Gibbons, Orlando Salido’s manager, as well as Promoter Fernando Beltran, had advised him that Peter Rivera had not offered them the necessary guarantees that Showtime Network had given PR Best Boxing DBA The Brothers Entertainment the March 12, 2016 date to hold the Martinez-Salido III bout. That Mr. Peter Rivera had not sent the P.R. Professional Boxing Commission any letter stating that they committed themselves to the WBO appointing the officials of the bout and that these could not be Puerto Rico officials.

For the reasons stated above, Attorney Francisco Valcarcel proceeded with the Purse Bid given that sufficient time had been allotted to finalize negotiations, without reaching the necessary conditions for the bout to take place.

Mr. Peter Rivera announced that he would not bid.

The Purse Bid proceeded in accordance with the conditions established therein by the WBO Championship Committee regarding the 10% deposit in a certified check or cash and that the balance amount had to be deposited by the Purse Bid winner no later than 15 days after the Purse Bid.

It was stated for the record that both parties gave proof that they were World Boxing Organization Bona Fide 2016 promoters.

All Star Boxing, Mr. Felix Zabala, handed Mr. Valcarcel his first envelope containing a certified check in the amount of $1,000 (One Thousand Dollars) to cover the Purse Bid Service Fee. Zanfer Promotions presented the first envelope that contained the cash amount of $1,000 (One Thousand Dollars) for the Purse Bid Service Fee.

All Star’s second envelope contained a certified check in the amount of $20,150 (Twenty Thousand One Hundred Fifty Dollars) corresponding to 10% of $201,500 (Two Hundred One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars) with their three proposed sites and dates.

Zanfer submitted a certified check in the amount of $25,100 (Twenty-Five Thousand One Hundred Dollars) corresponding 10% of the Purse Bid amount of $251,000 (Two Hundred Fifty-One Thousand Dollars) and proposed the following dates:

March 12th 2016 –Mexico
April 2nd 2016–Mexico
April 9th 2016–Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Taking into consideration both proposals, the Purse Bid was awarded to Zanfer Promotions, who must deposit within the 15 days from the date of the Purse Bid, the amount of $225,900.00 (Two Hundred Twenty-Five Nine Hundred Dollars) on behalf of World Boxing Organization to be deposited into the “Escrow” account.

Zanfer shall submit within 10 days the fighters contracts and the fighter have 10 days to sign the same and then, the contracts must be sent to the World Boxing Organization.

If the conditions herein exposed are not met, the second bidder, All Star, is entitled to be awarded the Purse Bid, having met within five (5) days the deposit of balance stated in the Purse Bid.

There’s been another change in the opponent of WBO light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes, the longest reigning Filipino world champion who is scheduled to defend his title at the classy Mall of Asia Arena on March 28 in a blockbuster card that will also feature the comeback fight of five division champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.

While Nietes was preparing to defend his title against Mexico’s Luis Ceja, the WBO Championship Committee chairman Luis Batista Salas on January 29 informed ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer and Zanfer Promotions Fernando Beltran that Nietes had to face mandatory challenger Francisco Rodriguez Jr also of Mexico.

The WBO official notified both parties that they were given 30 days to negotiate an agreement and if they failed to do so a Purse Bid would be called within ten days.

Aldeguer consulted Nietes and his team and said they were willing to face Rodriguez although he suggested that Nietes be allowed to fight Ceja as originally planned on March 28 and face Rodriguez in July.

On Monday, Aldeguer learned that Rodriguez “wasn’t ready to fight on March 28” and that Nietes will now defend his title against Gilberto Parra who is ranked No. 13 and Nietes will fight Rodriguez in a mandatory title defense on July 4.

Aldeguer informed the Manila Standard/Viva Sports “we have not signed the contract as yet but hopefully we should get it done by tomorrow (Wednesday).”

The merry-go-round once again highlights the difficulty Filipino promoters have in dealing with Zanfer while it also raises the question as to why the WBO insisted on a mandatory title defense when the challenger was not ready.

Parra has an impressive record of 17 knockouts in 19 wins with one of his losses suffered at the hands of Martin Tecuapetla who scored a lopsided ten round decision on November 2, 2013.

Tecuaptela is the same fighter who dropped a ten round majority decision against Milan Melindo in a clash for the WBO International title on May 10, 2014.

In his last fight on February 14 this year, Parra was cut on his left eye in the 2nd round of a scheduled ten round bout against Maximino Flores with the bout declared a “no contest.”

Despite over forty years of showcasing live professional boxing in “America’s Finest City” of San Diego, Bobby D. Presents, led by California boxing hall of fame promoter Bobby DePhilippis, still had a night of firsts last Friday night. In the main event of their last show of the year, billed as “Dangerous Divas II”, the popular Tijuana Kenia Enriquez (13-0, 6KO) put on a masterful display of power, speed and technique to capture the vacant WBO female flyweight title with a complete shutout of the much more experienced Ana “La Bronca” Arrazola (21-11-2, 13KO) of Mexico City. The night marked the first world title fight in San Diego in nearly ten years as well as the first female world title fight in the history of the city. Enriquez also set her mark by becoming the second youngest active female champion in boxing as well as the first Mexican woman to capture a WBO title strap. The night was co-promoted in association with Fernando Beltran’s Zanfer Promotions.

The just recently turned twenty-one year old Enriquez closed out a successful year with her fifth win of the year. After stopping Selene Lopez in one round in her native Tijuana last January, Enriquez defeated Noemi Bosques via a unanimous decision in her U.S. debut a month later. In April Enriquez stopped former two-time world champion Jolene Blackshear in seven to capture the NABF 108lb title and last September shutout the tough Mayela “Cobrita” Perez for eight rounds.

It was no secret the thirty-four year old southpaw Arrazola was the more experienced one with more knockouts than Kenia had fights. Arrazola held the fringe WBF junior flyweight title in 2013 and had challenged for world title before including against Yesica Bopp twice and Suzy Kentikian. Earlier this year she traveled to Japan for a shot at the IBF junior flyweight but came up short against Naoko Shibata. Arrazola was coming off a ten round unanimous decision over Estefania Fonseca back in October.

From the opening bell Enriquez made her intentions known as she welcomed to Arrazola to San Diego, the first time Arrazola was fighting on American soil after forays to Argentina, Germany and South Korea, with a hard right hand flush to the face that snapped the Mexico City fighter’s head back. That exact punch would turn out to be Enriquez’s weapon of choice through out the night.

Despite scheduled for ten rounds for the first time in her career, Enriquez wanted to finish things early and still in the first round she landed a hard left hook to begin a flurry that seemed to surprise Arrazola who perhaps expected a more complacent pace.

Kenia continued to score the straight right hand but changed it up to the body that would double Arrazola over every time it landed. Arrazola’s face might have had a homing device for Enriquez powerful straight right hand, as it never seemed to miss through the bout.

The Tijuana’s fighter defense turned out to be as good as her offense as she easily slipped Arrazola’s left and then countered with a multi-punch combination including a precise uppercut.

In the sixth Kenia went for the kill as she ran across the ring at the bell and tried to pin Arrazola against the ropes with a flurry of punches. Arrazola’s experience was enough for her to react quickly and use her lateral movement to get out of harm’s way but not before receiving a couple of flush punches to the face.

After a slower paced seventh and with the crowd egging her on, Kenia tried for the knockout again in the eighth but Arrazola besides using everything in her thirty-four bout, eight year career experience proved to have granite chin as she was able to survive the onslaught.

Yet another right hand landed early in the ninth but this one sent Arrazola reeling against the ropes but was able to counter well and make Enriquez think twice as the young champion tried to finish her off. Kenia never left off the gas, including in the tenth and final round, but Arrazola proved to be too tough and wise to get stopped.

All three judges, Tony Crebs, Alejandro Rochin and Pat Russell, had it a landslide victory for Enriquez with scores of 100-90, 100-90 and 100-89 respectively.

“She was very smart and experienced, every time I thought I had her and would be able to stop the fight, she would use something different to get away, I learned a lot from this fight, “ Enriquez said seconds after winning the title. “I am ready for the best of the world. I would like to either unify the division or go down to my natural weight of 108 pounds and win a title there. I might even try to go down to straw weight. I don’t think I would have a problem with that. I have to talk to my team and especially to my promoter, Bobby DePhilippis, to see what is next.”

It was a wild-wild west affair last night at the Tijuana Municipal Auditorium as a total of twenty knockdowns, seven in the main event, were witnessed by a nearly sold out enthusiastic crowd. Two world titles were contested in an event presented by Zanfer Promotions and broadcast live by the Azteca channel in Mexico and BEIN Sports in the U.S. In the main event, former featherweight champ Orlando “Siri” Salido (42-12-2, 29KO) captured the interim WBO 130lb title with an eleventh round KO win over the tough as nails Terdsak Kokietgym (53-5-1, 33KO) in rough and tumble fight of the year candidate. Both men went down multiple times as they left it all in the ring in a fight that ignited the crowd and made Kokietgym a local hero for his display of grit and heart, two virtues Mexican fight fans love.

Salido lost his featherweight title in his last fight by coming in overweight in his fight against Vasyl Lomachenko last March. Salido gave Lomachenko a rude welcoming to the pro ranks as he beat him via a split decision. Salido quickly after announced his graduation to the 130-pound division with a direct shot at the interim title. The championship bout marked only the fourth time he traveled outside of Asia. The three times before he faced top-level opposition and came up short against Joan Guzman, Juan Manuel Marquez and Steven Luevano. His last loss was two years ago when he challenged Japanese Takahiro Ao for the WBC title.

The southpaw Kokietgym made his presence known early on with a right hook that dropped Salido in the first round but the Mexican out of Ciudad Obregon returned the favor a minute later with a hook to the body. Every punch thrown by both men was with bad intentions and as Salido looked to close the round he was hurt by a straight left flush to the face.

Salido began to score with uppercuts from either fist through the middle and coupling them with hooks in the second but near the of the round Kokietgym of Bangkok, Thiland, erased all the work by seating Salido on the canvas with another straight left. Not to be deterred, Salido continued with his constant pressure as Kokietgym, who seemed to hit a bit harder, countered with that straight that didn’t seem to miss. It looked that Salido had scored another knockdown in the fourth after landing a right hook but the referee Eddie Claudio called it a slip. Salido kept plugging along and before the end of the round he did score the knockdown near the end of the round.

Looking for the finish early in the fifth, Salido was put down by another straight left between the Mexican’s power punches. By this point it looked that Kokietgym was slowing down and Salido was warmed up as “Siri” pushed the fight with constant pressure. With Salido landing a number of punches and Kokietgym’s back against the ropes, referee Eddie Claudio jumped in and broke them up thinking the bell had rung. Salido’s corner began celebrating before Claudio was able to bring back order and ordered them to continue.

The tide changed in the last round and Kokietgym changed his strategy as he began to box from the outside instead of going head-on against Salido as he did in the first six rounds. It didn’t matter as Salido caught him against the ropes and landed a barrage of punches that dropped the Thai once again.

Kokietgym was now working on pure heart and determination while Salido landed head snapping uppercuts. A right hand snapped Kokietgym’s head back in the middle of the eight and in the ninth the Asian fought most of his round with his hounds down and moving around the perimeter of the ring.

The Thai had his second win in the tenth as he threw caution to the wind and brought the fight to Salido keeping the action up close and scoring good punches with Salido’s back on the ropes. Salido was able to counterpunch well but Kokietgym showed a granite chin until the next round when Salido scored a three-punch combo punctuated with a left uppercut that crumbled Kokietgym to the canvas. Referee Eddie Claudio didn’t administer a count and instead called for the ringside doctor. After some tense minutes, Kokietgym recuperated. Official time was :16 of the 11th round.

After the bout, most of the crowd made their way to the exits including the ambulance. Since a fight can’t commence with no medical personnel present, there was a forty-five delay for the walk-out bouts to get going.

Takayama said “I’ve come to Monterrey willing to fight a war, to give everything in the ring. Rodriguez is a talented fighter, but as everyone has seen I am also talented.”

Timothy is 13 days away from his defense against Mexican icon Juan Manuel Márquez. Joining Timothy on today’s call is trainer Joel Diaz and manager Cameron Dunkin. We are now pleased to introduce his promoter, Hall of Fame Promoter Bob Arum.

BOB ARUM: Timothy just finished working out at his beautiful new gym in the desert and I must say he is in incredible shape and he told me if I wanted to move the fight up 12 days he would be ready to go tomorrow night and I really believe that. He is at the top of his game and as everyone that was here today could see, he is ready to give one incredible performance.

Joel, how as camp been going? We know Timothy is coming off an incredible fight against Provodnikov which, right now, is the leading candidate for Fight of the Year.. How is it coming off that to prepare for this fight?

JOEL DIAZ: Our training camp has been going really well. As you can see, this guy works extremely hard. He leaves nothing behind, pushing himself 100% in training. We worked hard on the weight, making sure it was not an issue like in the previous fight, which was a factor in that fight. But no more. Right now he is walking around at 152 at the most and wants to finish the week at 149. He is mentally and physically ready to go and looking forward to October 12th.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I want to be a part of Márquez’s legacy and by me beating Márquez, that right there will make me one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world. No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, wherever you want to place me. Márquez is probably the best fighter I will have ever faced in my career, by far. This fight on October 12th is going to be a very tough fight and I am game for war. I know Márquez is, too, I know his trainer very well and I know they are going to come out hard and try to take me out and take my title.

Joel, what does Tim need to do to counter Márquez?

JOEL DIAZ: The most important thing for Tim to do is stay very focused, follow the strategy and don’t fall into Márquez’s game. Márquez is a very experienced fighter. Don’t fall away from the plan and follow instructions and he’ll be fine.

Have you looked at the Chris John and Mayweather fights in which Márquez lost by decision and can you take anything away from those?

JOEL DIAZ: I watched the Mayweather fight and Mayweather showed me a lot going in the ring against a fighter like Juan Manuel Maárquez. Even though that fight was years ago, over time, fighters slow down a little due to age. But I focused on that fight and caught a lot of good points. I know that Márquez is still sharp and very smart. I know Márquez myself because I followed Márquez’s career. I am a big fan of Márquez and I have seen every single one of his fights. I don’t have to look at much video because I remember every single one of his fights – how he performs and what his strengths and weaknesses are. I know the type of counter-puncher he is so I really don’t have to look at much video. I already know him.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I have seen every one of his fights. I know what his weaknesses are and what he likes to do. That is our job — to know these things. That’s why we wanted this fight. I wanted this fight a few years ago. I always knew I could beat Márquez, even when he went back and fought Juan Diaz I felt that I could have been in there and done a lot better. But this fight is happening now and I am going to prove to the world that I am a top fighter, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the game. I am going to beat Márquez, you heard it here first, and we’ll see what the people say after that.

Are you willing to box or do you feel a need to go toe-to-toe?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I am here to put on a show but I am also going to follow the game plan that we put together to win the fight.

Is there a concern for the judges?

JOEL DIAZ: There is always a concern. This is boxing and at the end of the day what’s going to happen is what’s going to happen. Tim is a very elusive fighter and has great speed and great footwork and if it’s up to the judges we hope they do their job and Tim is going to prove he is one of the best fighters in the world when he beats Márquez.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Man, I am going to whoop his ass and the judges are going to give me the fight. Just like the U.S. government I am going to shut down Juan Manuel Márquez on October 12th. I am going to win the fight – that is the bottom line. I’m not concerned about any judges or any ref. I am going to get in there and do my job and beat Márquez. And that’s it. And the world’s going to see it.

BOB ARUM: I just hope that we are not going to have any kind of controversy with the judges. The fighters fight and the judges pick the winner of the fight and that’s all I can ask for.

You spoke about residual effects from the Provodnikov fight on 24/7. How long did it take once you got back in the gym to feel like yourself again?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I have always had positive vibes and positive energy. I knew and I told Joel Diaz that I would bounce back from it. It took me two months just to get back to normal. Going in the gym, I was out of shape, sparring, things were a little off but that was because I was out of shape. I told them ‘ once I get back into shape, don’t worry guys, everything will get better. My IQ, my speed, my defense will all come back.’ Three or four weeks ago, my trainers told me I was right. My sparring sessions got better, my defense got back, my speed was better and everything was falling into place and everything was back. I was actually doing the plan in the sparring session that Joel wanted to see and my team wanted to see and we are backing up the truck now. I am 110% going into this fight. I am not worried about getting punched or can I take a punch – I know I can take a punch and I know I’m ready to go.

Were you concerned about a lingering effect?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: No, I never felt that way because you know what happens? A lot of fighters don’t know that there is a lot of help out there for these concussions. NFL players have that help. My friends in the NFL got me the right treatment and I saw doctors out of New York, Long Beach, that could aid and assist me with therapy work. Everything is back to normal now. I feel 100% and I never worried.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Most people that have lingering effects and get multiple concussions never get help – they don’t get treatment. I’ve been getting treatment for the last five months.

Joel, tell us what it was like when he came back into camp.

JOEL DIAZ: I noticed a little bit at the beginning because his equilibrium wasn’t there. With time he was getting better. He was focusing on losing weight. He had gained quite a bit of weight. So he was losing weight too fast. He had gained a lot of weight because he was inactive. As soon as he started getting back in shape everything started to fall in place. His balance and equilibrium started to come back. As a trainer I always take that into consideration – how is he going to come back because he did get hit pretty hard? Week after week he started getting better and he was reacting really good. And he told me that once he got back into shape he was going to be reacting really good. He’s been sparring with some tough sparring partners. He’s been getting hit real hard and been reacting really good. All reactions I have seen from him are normal and his reflexes are very sharp.

Bob, were you surprised these two [Bradley and Márquez] turned down a Pacquiao fight to fight each other? For less?

BOB ARUM: Money isn’t everything. These guys aren’t fighting on October 12 for peanuts. The purses they are getting are substantial and legacy is important for both Timothy and Juan Manuel Márquez. Timothy wants Márquez’s scalp on his belt, so to speak. And Márquez wants to be the first Méxican to win five world titles in five weight divisions. Both of them indicated to me that Pacquiao could wait.

Tim, why take this fight instead of more lucrative fight with Pacquiao?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: One, going to China was a reason and, two, the money was not out-of-this-world. Márquez is 40 and on his way out and I wanted to get a shot at him. I tried three years ago to get a crack at him – to beat him – and I wanted to fight him before he left the game. This is my opportunity to do that. Coming off the Provodnikov fight, it was a hard fight, it was a great fight and it did do some adjusting to where I fit in boxing. I figured, let’s keep going towards the light and let’s face a new challenge in Márquez before he gets out, and beat him. Then maybe we can go back and revisit the dark side in Manny Pacquaio. I felt I wasn’t ready to do it again. After the Provodnikov fight I was in darkness, then I came to the light and I want to stay in the light. I want to shine and I can do that by having two guys on my resume who are by far the best fighters in the world, hall-of-famers, and if I could beat both of these guys I would be considered one of the best.

What is it about Márquez that sets him apart form the other great fighters you have faced?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Márquez has fought everybody. He has been in the ring with all the best fighters in the world. He never ducked anybody. He’s been in there with Mayweather. He fought Pacquiao four times. And there is nothing he has not seen. He is one of the best counter-punchers in the game. People struggle when they fight this guy. He either knocks them out or he wins a decision because he is a great counter-puncher. He’s that best name on my resume. I fought a lot of fighters, young and old, but they are not the caliber of Márquez.

How did you become a fan of Márquez?

JOEL DIAZ: Following his career, he has been a very exciting fighter. In boxing you like to see great fights and he has been part of the great fights. Me as a Méxican fighter we always look at the best fighters that México can produce – Julio César Chávez, Jose Luis Castillo, Erik Morales – and now we have Márquez, and I’m facing him. I have to give my fighter a strategy to beat him. And it’s an honor to create a strategy for someone that I have followed. I have a fighter that is hungry to gain that throne. It’s my job to prepare my fighter to beat him. To go in the ring with my fighter and to come out with a win I can go home and say I idolized him and now one of my fighters beat him.

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I have always been a fan of Márquez. I always thought he was a great fighter and I still think he’s a great fighter. I want to fight the best to be the best in this sport. I don’t do this just to make money, of course the money is important for my family, but I do this to be the best. That’s what motivates me and drives me. People that tell me I can’t do it, I want to prove them wrong. I am one of the best fighters in the world and if I’m not No. 1 on your list, I will be. Floyd’s got a few more fights left so when I beat Márquez I will be right in there.

Are you surprised, as being the champion, that Márquez is favored to win the fight?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: No, no , no. Everybody is looking at my last fight and everybody is looking at his last fight. Everyone remembers when he knocked out Pacquiao. And everyone remembers that war with Ruslan Provodnikov. A lot of people think I am going to be wild and go down and people have to see if I still have it or not. Of course they are going for the veteran, the guy that knocked out Pacquiao so of course they are going to bet on him to win. I don’t mind being the underdog. I like it. I like taking people’s money and I’ll take it again. People can doubt me and doubt me and that’s OK but soon they will get sick of losing their money.

Are you looking forward to the challenge of facing Nacho Beristáin in the other corner?

JOEL DIAZ: Definitely, I think that Nacho is one of the best trainers in the world. He has done so much for the sport, you could call him a legend. I am coming in with a great fighter in Timothy Bradley and he is coming in with a great fighter in Juan Manuel Márquez. We are matching wits and when Tim wins I will be very happy to have accomplished a wing against a great trainer.

Juan Manuel Márquez busted up the bags at media day, are you worried about his power?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I don’t give a damn what he did. I don’t give a damn if he busted a bag. I don’t give a damn if he trained on the moon. I don’t give a damn if he broke somebody’s jaw. That’s all irrelevant to me, man. He doesn’t know what we are doing over here. That doesn’t scare me at all.

You say Márquez will be the best fighter you ever faced. Would he still have been the best if he didn’t KO Pacquiao?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: I just think that’s he’s a very intelligent fighter. It’s good to have that knockout on his resume plus the other fights with Pacquiao, and the Mayweather fight and I think he fought Morales. He fought everybody – all the best out there. So that would not have changed.

How was sparring with Matthysse?

Sparring with him really helped my confidence (coming back from Provodnikov) – we have worked together – it wasn’t electrifying in the ring. He had his moments and I had my moments. The biggest thing was it my first day back and his first day sparring after coming to the states. We did four rounds and he was a little winded so maybe he was jetlagged. I thought it was a great sparring session. I got to see his strengths and his weaknesses. He landed some good shots on me and I took his best shot. He hit me with a big left hook and I went halfway across the ring and I stopped and said ‘boy you’re strong.’

How confident are you in the testing?

TIMOTHY BRADLEY: Well, it is what it is. There is nothing I can do about that. I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t. If I don’t take this fight I don’t get paid and make money for my family. HBO, Top Rank and everybody would be pissed off if I pulled out of this fight. He’s doing the testing that Nevada is doing and that’s great. VADA is a qualified agency – they are more strict and their percentages are better also. I am a clean athlete so why not do the best testing out there. I said let’s do VADA and he didn’t want to do it. We’ve been getting randomly tested the last for weeks. They just show up – they call an hour early. He’s passed all the tests so all we can say is that he’s clean.

JOEL DIAZ: On October 12 you are going to see Bradley put on a great performance. He is going to put a beating on Márquez. I don’t think you are going to need judges. I think Márquez is going to come and put Tim to sleep like he did to Pacquiao and it’s not going to happen. Tim is a smarter fighter, more defensive and he’s going to complicate Márquez’s day. After the fifth or sixth round – Tim is going to take Márquez into the deep water and that’s when Tim is going to do his best – you don’t have to leave it up to the judges.

BOB ARUM: Between now and October 12, we have a great fight on Saturday in Orlando between Miguel Cotto against Delvin Rodriguez and a battle of undefeated lightweight contenders, Terrence Crawford against Andrey Klimov; and following that fight, episode two of 24/7 Bradley/Márquez – the first episode was terrific. Everyone is getting ready for the big showdown on October 12. At Wild Card Gym tomorrow you have your first opportunity to see Lomachenko, probably the best amateur in the history for this sport will be making his pro debut on the card. Bradley and Márquez are both training hard and it is going to be a fantastic card on October 12.

In last his fight, on April 13, he scored a first-round knockout of Dion Stanley on the undercard of the Nonito Donaire – Guillermo Rigondeaux world junior featherweight championship at Radio City Music Hall. Venturing outside the New York / New Jersey area for the first time, Monaghan (18-0, 11 KOs), of Long Beach, NY, will risk his title, undefeated record and top-10 rating against ANTHONY CAPUTO-SMITH. Smith (14-1, 10 KOs), of Kenneth Square, Pa., captured the Pennsylvania State light heavyweight title on April 19, winning a gritty majority decision over Dhafir Smith.

Unbeaten WBO welterweight champion Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (30-0, 12 KOs) of Palm Springs, California and four time division world champion Mexico City’s Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KOs) kicked off their two city press tour for their October PPV showdown on Wednesday afternoon at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The two will square off Saturday October 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I want to welcome you all to what I believe will be the fight of the year or certainly a candidate for fight of the year,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “This fight is for legacy. Timothy wants to win this fight to beat the top Mexican fighter in the world and Juan Manuel Marquez is looking to make history to win 5 world titles in five weight divisions.”

Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions, who co-promotes Marquez, was also on hand as he spoke on the upcoming bout, “This is the fight everyone wants to see. Two professional fighters, of course, because of their last performances. I think Timothy really fought with his heart. It is one the most sensational fights I have seen live.

“These guys are going to go at each other. They know how to get into it. This is a real fight, a boxing match. Not a guy that is going to be running around outclassing his opponent with his skill but not giving the fans what they paid for. So these two guys will give the fans their money’s worth.”

Marquez trainer Nacho Beristan talked with the media as he anticipates a tough one.

“This is a real natural interesting fight. We recognize the quality of the champion, the way his trainer handles him. I think we will have a complicated night but we have every right to say we will come out victorious,” Beristan said.

Team Bradley was represented by his manager Cameron Dunkin along with Timothy’s father Ray Bradley and trainer Joel Diaz. Diaz spoke about the upcoming preparation and challenge they have in facing Juan Manuel Marquez.

“We are back again in another tough fight. We have by far one of our toughest fights against one of the toughest opponents, an Aztec warrior which is Juan Manuel Marquez. Behind him stands the professor of boxing, the best trainer in the world Mr. Nacho Beristan,” Diaz said. “Now it’s in my hands to put together a plan to beat Juan Manuel Marquez with my fighter, the world champion Tim Bradley.”

Juan Manuel Marquez followed as he welcomed everyone in attendance talked about his upcoming showdown speaking both in English and Spanish, “I want to thank Team Bradley for this fight. Well I have always said if I want to be the best I have to beat the best. Bradley is the champion. I am ready for this fight. The people will see October 12 another great fight because of our styles. I feel focused for October 12. I am training real hard on my strength and speed. That is what is really important for this fight, the speed.”

“This belt is beautiful. Everyone knows what happened in November 2011. This belt should be mine, but October 12 I will be back for it. This is my motivation. I feel happy for this opportunity,” Marquez concluded.

Timothy Bradley made his statement, speaking highly of his counterpart, and promises to give another great performance.

“I want to thank Juan Manuel Marquez It shows you what type of fighter and talent Juan Manuel Marquez has. He is 40, his ability and mental state of wanting to fight the best.”

“I am so pumped up can’t wait to get back to the gym and start training for this fight. I know what I have in front of me, the obstacle I have. It’s going to be a tough challenge. I am not taking him for granted. I don’t care how old he is what he has done in the past, he is facing me now. After October 12 I will be on everyone’s pound for pound list without a doubt. Don’t miss this fight I am telling you it’s going to be an unbelievable night,” Bradley stated.

The press conference concluded as both faced off for the cameras and things got a little tensed as Bradley stepped up to Marquez but that situation was quickly defused.

“You got two top athletes. Marquez in his eyes is very determined and hungry like he wants something it looks like he wanted to take something from me there and I looked the same at him I mean we are both warriors. Call us roosters or gallos (Spanish),” Bradley told Fightnews.com.

“It’s all part of boxing. It’s the psychological tactic of a fighter. For me it’s nothing new. Let’s just say the psychological war has begun,” Marquez told Fighntews.

The Bradley-Marquez press tour resumes Friday in Mexico City. The Bradley Marquez undercard will include Top Rank’s recently signed light heavyweight Shane Monahan (18-0, 11KOs) of Long Beach, New York vs. Anthony Caputo Smith (14-1, 10KOs) in a ten round light heavyweight bout.
