MANILA, Philippines – Led by the revenge-minded Jason “El Niño” Pagara, Filipino boxers conquered their visiting Mexican opponents in Pinoy Pride XV: The Rematch Saturday afternoon at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu City.

According to a Phil Boxing report, Pagara defeated Mexico’s Rosbel “Lobito” Montoya via sixth round technical knockout in their rematch to win the World Boxing Organization (WBO) international light welterweight title.

It was sweet revenge for Pagara, who lost to Montoya last September after the Mexican gave him a lesson in counter-punching.

This time, Pagara made sure there was no doubt as he knocked down the Mexican in the very first round with hard body shots. Though Montoya recovered, Pagara remained aggressive and continued to work the body very well.

Montoya went down for good in the sixth round, as he could no longer keep up with the faster Pagara. His counter-punching was also less effective than it was last year against the Filipino.

Pagara’s record improved to 29 wins, two losses, with 18 wins by knockout, while Montoya dropped to 36-5-1, with 30 knockouts.

In the undercard, Genesis “Azukal” Servania battered Jorge “El Feroz” Pazos for 12 rounds en route to a wide points victory.

Servania knocked Pazos down in the first round, eighth round and again in the 11th to win with scores of 118-107 on all scorecards, earning the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight title.

PhilBoxing reported that Pazos was sent to a local hospital for observation but was conscious and coherent.

Servania remained unbeaten with a record of 19-0, with six wins coming by knockout. Pazos dropped to 21-4.

Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca knocked out Angel “Arcangel” Martinez in the eighth and final round. Jaca had registered knockdowns in the third and seventh round before putting down Martinez for good late in the eighth.

Jason Pagara secured his revenge as promised for his ten round unanimous decision loss to Mexico’s power-punching Rosbel Montoya last September with a smashing 6th round TKO before a large crowd at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino late Saturday.

This was not the ill-trained, troubled Pagara that was embarrassed before his hometown fans the last time around but a top conditioned, sharply focused 21 year old free of the personal problems that cost him their first meeting and supremely confident.

Pagara set the tone of the fight when he rocked Montoya with a right hand and then dropped him with a crunching body shot in the opening round.

Montoya tried to use his experience in round two but was cautioned twice by referee Danrex Tapdasan for low blows.

Pagara ripped a left hook to the liver that saw Montoya crumble to the canvas in riund three, in the process spitting out his mouthpiece to buy time, but Pagara nailed him with another vicious body shot for the second knockdown of the round.

Montoya received a third and final warning for another low blow before both fighters traded vicious body shots with Pagara jerking the head of Montoya back with a perfectly timed right straight to take the round.

The Mexican began to fight desperately but Pagara kept his composure against a series of wild roundhouse punches before catching Montoya with a flurry of punches that sapped the energy out of the game Mexican.

Pagara hammered Montoya at the start of the sixth round, hurt him badly and then caught him  with a hard right on his left arm which saw the Mexican grimace in pain as he went down and was at the mercy of the 21 year old Filipino who hit the canvas with his fists after jumping up for joy when referee Tapdasan called a halt at 1:41 of the round with Montoya unable to continue.

With the impressive win Pagara not only won the vacant WBO International junior welterweight title he also redeemed his reputation with his 18th stoppage in 29 wins against only 2 defeats and earned a chance to train in the US possibly under Robert Garcia, trainer of the reigning WBO/IBF super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.

The fights which were telecast on the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday morning with a replay on Studio 23 began withy a sensational knockout in the last second of the eighth and final round by JImrex “The Executioner” Jaca who battered Mexican knockout artist Angel Martinez with devastating body shots, dropping Martinez with a terrific left counter after the Mexican connected with a right in round three.

Jaca dropped Martinez twice in the 7th round with deadly body shots but referee Teddy Alivio who had earlier ruled a cut caused by an accidental head-butt on the Mexican as coming from a punch, added to the confusion by ruling that the knockdown was caused by a low blow for which he deducted a point from Jaca.

Jaca was in total command of the fight against the vaunted Mexican puncher and finally put him away at 2:59 of the 8th and final round with a devastating left hook.

Sweet punching Genesis “Azukal” Servania decked game Mexican Jorge Pazos with two lefts and a perfect right hook in round one but Pazos was up in a flash more stunned than hurt.

Servania continued to press the action, rocked Pazos in round three and again with a big uppercut in round four. A welt began to develop under the right eye of Pazos who continued to take a bad beating before a series of body shots with a crunching left hook to the liver sent  the Mexican down for the second time in round eight.

Pazos gamely battled on trying desperately to survive before another combination sent the Mexican crashing to the canvas in the 11th round but he held on to the end, ultimately losing a lopsided 118-107 decision on the scorecards of all three judges.

Servania won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific 122 pound title and improved his unbeaten record to 19-0 with 7 knockouts.

Pazos later started vomiting in his dressing room and had to be rushed to hospital for a routine checkup.

The fight card was one of the best and fiercely contested in recent months and fans went home more than satisfied not just with the performance of the ALA fighters but more so with the fact that the Mexicans were not patsies and  fought like true warriors with the fans showing their appreciation by applauding each one of them for their fighting spirit.

CEBU CITY – This fight is not just for the vacant WBO International jr. welterweight title. Jason “El Niño” Pagara’s future as a big fight headliner will be on the line when he fights Mexico’s Rosbel Montoya in a much anticipated rematch of the fight held last September. Montoya gave Pagara a boxing lesson last year and became only the second Mexican boxer to win here in Cebu. Pagara will have to be better on Saturday.

Pagara and Montoya both weighed in at 139.5 lbs during the official weigh-in held Friday noon at the SM Cebu City Mall Events Center.

“I am anticipating a great fight. I feel strong and I am ready to fight.” Montoya said after the weigh-in.

In the supporting main event for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title, Mexican boxer Jorge “El Feroz” Pazos weighed 120 lbs while Genesis ‘Azukal’ Servania of Bacolod City stepped in at the division limit of 122 lbs.

“I reached twelve rounds in sparring and I feel really good.” Servania told this writer before the start of the weigh-in.

“I trained for three months. I am in great shape.” Pazos said, “Mexico will win over the Philippines.”

Jimrex ‘The Executioner’ Jaca weighed 143 lbs and had to shed two pounds in a hour before being given the go signal by GAB supervisor Rolando Mendoza. Angel “Arcangel’ Martinez of Mexico weighed 138 lbs. Jaca is coming from a long lay-off and may be headed for an ambush.

Rising prospect “Prince” Albert Pagara weighed in at 119 lbs while Alvin Maquiling was a pound and a half over the contracted weight at 120.5 lbs. Mark Vincent Bernaldez weighed 122 lbs while Joash Apirecio was two pounds heavier.

Comedic pugilist Jojo ‘Flash’ Intor (126.5 lbs) will fight a Japanese opponent, Takaomi Naoma (125.75 lbs). Intor was previously scheduled to fight Peter Aldrin.For the other undercard bouts, Juren Labordo (113.5 lbs) will face Powell Balaba (108lbs) and JP Artieda (112lbs) fights Hector Rojoca (108 lbs).

PINOY PRIDE 15 will start at 6 pm at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino this Saturday.

Mexican boxers Jorge “El Feroz” Pazos and Angel “Arcangel” Martinez together with manager and promoter Jesus Edmundo Gaytan answered questions from Cebu sportswriters in a press conference held today at the Patio Isabel in Talamban.

Pazos (21W-3L, 14 KO’s) is set to face undefeated ALA Boxer Genesis “Azukal” Servania (18W-0L, 6 KO’s) for the vacant WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight title. Martinez (18W-2L-1D, 13 KO’s) on the other hand will face Jimrex “The Executioner” Jaca (39W-6L-3D, 19 KO’s).

The trio said that they are well prepared and win or lose, fans will certainly enjoy the fights and they will be competitive.

“Our two boxers have a bright future and they trained hard,” Gaytan said, “We will give fans a spectacular fight.”

“I trained for two and a half months,” Martinez said, “I have seen videos of Jaca. My strategy is to fight from a distance and wiat for my chance to hit hard. Jaca is known in my country because he fought Juan Manuel Marquez. Jaca is a good boxer and a southpaw, so I will also learn from him in this fight.”

Martinez has also lost to a quality boxer, Lucas Mathysse. “He was very fast and strong and knew how to push and hold.”

Gaytan said that Martinez was competitive against Mathysse in the early rounds but the body blows really hurt him and made him fade. In the later rounds.

Pazos for his part said “I came well prepared, I am also considered a promising fighter in Mexico. So this will be a battle between two promising fighters. I have seen Servania fight. He is a good fighter, very strong and very fast. This will be a spectacular fight, the most important fight of my career.”

Mike Lopez, the ever ready cornerman for Latino boxers here in Cebu, will be in the corner of Pazos and Martinez together with Magdaleno Montoya from Team Montoya.

Gaytan also commented about the fact that only Fernando Montiel and Rosbel Montoya are the only Mexican boxers who have won in Cebu. “80-90 percent of Filipino boxers also lose in Mexico. It must be the travel, climate, diet and change of time zones.”

Rosbel “Lobito” Montoya (36-4-1, 30 KO’s) will face Cebu sportswriters on Wednesday. He is scheduled to fight Jason “El Niño” Pagara (28-2, 17 KO’s) in the main event of Pinoy Pride XV: The Rematch. They will vie for the WBO International jr. welterweight title.

The weigh-in will be held at the SM Cebu City Mall on Friday noon and fight day will be at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel on Saturday.
