Late last month, Jorge Arce and Lorenzo Parra put together a rematch for Arce’s WBO bantamweight title on February 18, with Arce looking to fight his third straight rematch (following second bouts with Simphiwe Nongqayi and Angky Angkotta). The fight was to take place in Mexico and was to serve as both a “stay-busy” fight for Arce, who intended to later move back up to 122 and challenge the winner of Nonito Donaire vs Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, and a chance to atone for a rather lousy performance from Arce in his first fight with Parra, a controversial draw from September 2010.

But the WBO has rejected the fight,, on the basis that Parra (31-3-1, 18 KO) isn’t in their top 15 at 118 pounds. according to Fightnews.com

Instead of running through any thoughts on who Arce may instead face, here’s the WBO’s top 15 as of December 2011: AJ Banal, Pungluang Sor Singyu, Paulus Ambunda, Dayer Gabutan, Marlon Tapales, Tomoki Kameda, William Prado, Joseph Agbeko, Rodolfo Hernandez, Sahib Usarov, Juan Alberto “Topo” Rosas, Phumzile Matyhila, Immanuel Naidjala, Drian Francisco, Lee Haskins.

There are some interesting choices in there (Banal, Pungluang, Agbeko, Rosas), but none would seem likely to happen. It’ll be one of them, or maybe someone ranked at 115 or 112, or maybe he’ll make it a non-title fight and fight somebody else. Your guess is as good as mine, but the Parra fight is off

One of boxing’s brightest stars, Nonito Donaire, was again spotted training at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas, Nevada, ahead of his February 4th HBO-televised clash with former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Donaire, the reigning WBO and WBC bantamweight champion, is moving up to the junior featherweight class to meet Vazquez for the vacant WBO belt, the same crown the Puerto Rican used to hold before his TKO loss to Jorge Arce in May of last year.

Under the watchful eye of his trainer Robert Garcia, Donaire sparred six spirited rounds with undefeated featherweight prospect Evgeny Gradovich. Originally hailing from Russia, Gradovich pressed Donaire and you could tell Nonito is still adjusting to the size difference with his move up in weight.

That being said, Donaire was equally effective with his blazing counters and didn’t back down from the challenge.

February 4th is inching closer and so too is Donaire beginning to become more well-rounded in camp.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum predicts the clash between Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr of Puerto Rico for the vacant WBO jr featherweight title at the Alamadome in San Antonio, Texas on February 4 “should be a tremendous fight.”

Donaire who won the WBO/WBC bantamweight title with a sensational 2nd round TKO over highly favored Mexican Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel on February 19, 2011 and then scored a shutout twelve round decision against two division world champion Omar Narvez of Argentina at The Theater of Madison Square Garden on October 22, 2011 has been training hard under Robert Garcia who warned that it won’t be an easy fight..

Donaire who is following the path laid out by eight division world champion and Ring Magazine pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao had earlier won the IBF flyweight title with a smashing 5th round demolition of Australia’s Vic Darchinyan and then captured the WBA super flyweight title with a twelve round unanimous decision over an overweight Rafael Concepcion on August 15, 2008 before sealing his title bid with an 8th round TKO of Mexico’s Hernan Marquez on July 10, 2011.

Coincidentally, it was on that same fight card in Puerto Rico that Vazquez Jr scored a 4th round knockout of former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona to win the 122 pound crown..

Arum noted that Vazquez who lost his title to Mexican warrior Jorge “Travieso” Arce was “beating Arce most of that fight but Arce caught him in the last round and knocked him out..”

He said “I think this fight (against Vazquez Jr) is going to be a big step for Nonito.”

Arum disclosed that should Donaire win he would look to arrange a fight against Arce and then WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka of Japan. He said he plans to promote one of those two fights at the new Mall of Asia stadium and that HBO Sports had agreed to send a crew to the Philippines to cover the fight on a Sunday morning.

Arum said that based on the early ticket sales “we expect a huge crowd” since WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesaar Chavez Jr will defend his title against Marco Antonio Rubio “who can really punch and that should be a great fight.”

Chavez’ strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza told the Manila Standard that he was “very happy with the way Chavez is coming along. He is working very hard because he knows that this is going to the fight that is going to take him to the super fights against Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Saul Alvarez.”

Manager and trainer Olrando Pinero is confident that his boxer, super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (22-2, 15KOs), will get the winner of Nonito Donaire-Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., taking place on February 4th in San Antonio, Texas. Donaire and Vazquez will battle for the vacant WBO title. Oquendo, the WBO Latino champion, is the mandatory challenger after winning an eliminator last October with a second round knockout of Jose Luis Araiza. Oquendo has been unbeaten with eight wins since losing to Juan Manuel Lopez in 2008.

“Oquendo will be active on the card where Juanma will fight for the world title [against Orlando Salido] on March 10 or 31. Vazquez and Nonito Donaire will fight on February 4 for the WBO super bantamweight crown. And I am confident that Jonathan, the WBO’s official challenger, will be next. The winner between Vazquez and Donaire will then fight Oquendo. He has the quality to be world champion,” Pinero said.

Nonito Donaire knows his next fight won’t at all resemble his repulsively dull win over Omar Narvaez.

“The Filipino Flash” is heavily favored to defeat Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., too, but Donaire won’t have to worry about Vazquez keeping away from him and not actually trying to win.

“The last fight, the guy didn’t want to fight me,” Donaire said. “But I know that this fight, there’s not going to be room for any boring moments. Because I know that Vazquez, not only is he a good person, you know, he’s a great guy, but I know that he comes out there to fight. He wants to prove to himself, to Puerto Rico and the world that he belongs [on] this level of elite fighters.”

Vazquez lost the WBO super bantamweight title to an aged Jorge Arce on May 7 in Las Vegas, but Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) anticipates facing an improved Vazquez next month in their HBO co-feature.

“From what I saw in the Arce fight, he did a great job,” Donaire said. “But I know that a fighter of his caliber, with the blood that flows in him from his father, he just gets better. And I know that I’m going to fight the best Vazquez Jr. come Feb. 4.

“So I’m going to train to the best of my ability. And this is what makes boxing great, when you have two guys who respect each other, but we go out there to tear each other’s heads off.”

Mexico’s Arce (59-6-2, 45 KOs) and Vazquez (21-1-1, 18 KOs) were even on two scorecards heading into the 12th round of their bout, but Arce hurt him with an array of power punches against the ropes that caused Vazquez’s father/trainer to throw in the towel with 2:05 left in the fight. The 27-year-old Vazquez, who didn’t participate in a single amateur fight before making his pro debut five years ago, thinks his inexperience hurt him against Arce, who has had 67 fights in a 16-year pro career.

“I know everybody is thinking about the Arce fight,” Vazquez said. “I mean, I didn’t have any amateur experience and I got a lot of experience from that fight. I’m learning every day and I’m ready to win the world title.”

Former WBO Jr. Featherweightt champion Wilfredo ‘Papito’ Vazquez Jr. (21-1, 18KOs) is preparing for his big fight on February 4th in San Antonio, Texas against Filipino Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18KOs) for the vacant title that he once owned. The fight will be televised by HBO. The Puerto Rican boxer reportedly going to travel to Toluca, Mexico, to complete his training in what is going to be the biggest and most lucrative fight of his career. Vazquez Jr. will arrive in Toluca about 21 days before his trip to San Antonio.

Vazquez understands that he needs to be in the best physical condition for Donaire, who Top Rank is promoting as the next Manny Pacquiao. Donaire is also taking this fight very seriously. He’s been training in the Philippines and Japan, and now the former two division champion has traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada, to finalize his training.

WBO bantamweight champion Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce (59-6-2, 46KOs) has already announce his upcoming fight on February 18th in Durango, Mexico – a rematch with Venezuelan Lorenzo Parra. Should Arce beat Parra, he would like to get the winner of the WBO featherweight bout between champion Orlando Salido and challenger Juan Manuel Lopez, which is likely to happen in March. WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel considers the move to featherweight as being a little too much for Arce.

Paco would rather see him face the winner of Nonito Donaire-Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who on February 4th will battle for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title, which is the belt that Arce left behind to drop down in weight to capture his current strap.

“I think [Arce] should go afer the winner of Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez, who fight on February 4 in San Antonio [Texas]. Of course Arce is the only Mexican who won titles in five different divisions and four of them have been with the WBO. No doubt, ‘Travieso’ is a warrior, but I would prefer that he takes a fight with Donaire or Vazquez,” Paco told Sal Rodriguez.

RingTV.com has learned that former WBO/WBC bantamweight titleholder Nonito Donaire will climb a division to make his junior featherweight debut against THE RING’s No. 9-rated 122 pounder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Feb. 11 or Feb. 18. Las Vegas is the likely locale for the fight.

Donaire-Vazquez would be for the WBO’s junior featherweight belt that is being vacated by Jorge Arce, who dethroned Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 17 KOs) by 12th-round knockout on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in May.

Arce has dropped back down to bantamweight for a unanimous decision victory over Angky Angkotta to earn the vacant WBO belt in that division no Nov. 26.

Promoted by Top Rank Inc., Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) is coming off last month’s unanimous decision over WBO junior bantamweight beltholder Omar Narvaez, who lost every round on the cards of the three judges in their bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Donaire returned to sparring and training on Monday, according to a source close to the fighter.

RingTV.com initially reported that Donaire-Vazquez as being eyed as a pay per view main event in Las Vegas, but other reports have since indicated that Donaire could return to New York.

FILIPINO three-division champion Nonito Donaire, Jr. will most likely aim for a fourth division crown sometime in February.

A report from the World Boxing Organization has stated they are about to declare a battle for the vacant superbantamweight crown between former champion Wilfredo Vazquez. Jr. of Puerto Rico and Donaire, their newly installed no. 1 contender.

Donaire recently gave up his WBO bantamweight crown, which was claimed by Mexican Jorge Arce just last weekend by decisioning Angky Angkota of Indonesia.

Before aiming for the title vacated by Donaire, Arce was the holder of the WBO 122-lb crown, which the Mexican also gave up.

It seemed apparent that both Donaire and Arce had a deal that would give both fighters momentous achievements without fighting each other.

In winning the bantamweight belt, Arce has laid claim to being the first Mexican to win five division world titles.

Donaire, meanwhile, will be gunning for his fourth division tiara that will be four short of current Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

The 28-year-old Donaire has won crowns in the flyweight, superflyweight and bantamweight divisions.

Both Donaire and Arce are promoted by Top Rank big boss Bob Arum.

DOUBLE VENGEANCE. Revenge for both a compatriot and his father’s protégé may serve as a motivation for Donaire in facing Vazquez.

The once-beaten Vazquez crowned himself WBO superbantamweight ruler when he knocked out former WBO superflyweight champion Marvin Sonsona inside four rounds in February of last year in Puerto Rico.

When he fought Vazquez, Sonsona was also undefeated and lost his WBO 115-lb crown when he failed to make the weight in his first title defense that ended in a draw.

The 21-year-old Sonsona trained for the Vazquez bout under the guidance of Nonito Donaire, Sr.

“Back then, I took everything for granted and spent more time with my friends than inside the gym. I learned a lot from it and now I am determined to win another world crown,” said Sonsona.

October of this year, Sonsona went back to his winning ways by decisioning Mexican Carlos Jacobo in Cebu. The bookmaker also takes bets on tv exhibits like Psychic Challenge, What? According to WBO President Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, Mexico’s Jorge “Travieso” Arce (58-6-2, 45KOs) has vacated the WBO’s super bantamweight title because he plans to drop down in weight to face Angky Angkotta (25-5, 14KOs) of Indonesia for the vacant WBO 118-pound title on November 26th in Mexico. Arce wants to make history by winning a fifth title in a fifth weight division.

On the other hand, Valcarcel revealed that Top Rank has already requested for the WBO to approve a fight between Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 18 KOs) for Arce’s vacant WBO title at 122. Donaire has vacated his WBO/WBC titles at 118 and plans to continue his career at 122.

“[Top Rank] is looking to make a fight between Nonito Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., who could be held in February 2012,” Valcarcel said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Nonito Donaire retained the WBO and WBC bantamweight titles, unanimously outpointing Omar Narvaez on Saturday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Donaire improved to 27-1, extending his nine-year winning streak to 26 fights, with winning scores of 120-108 from the judges. After Donaire knocked out nine of his last 10 opponents, the fight had most of the 4,425 fans booing the lack of action.

“I was bored,” Donaire said. “When I know that the guy wouldn’t open up, I kind of got bored because no matter what I opened my hands, I opened my face and the least you can do is hit me with a jab, hit me with something.”

Narvaez (35-1-2) lost for the first time in his 11-year professional career.

“He never hurt me,” Narvaez said. “I didn’t feel any of the punches. I didn’t think he was such a big deal.

Donaire won the title with an overwhelming second-round knockout of Fernando Montiel eight months ago, but this one was nowhere as easy as that left hook for the 28-year-old making his first New York appearance.

After judges awarded Donaire the first three rounds, he began to get into a groove in the fourth. Late in the round, Donaire began landing more punches and he had Narvaez against the ropes with a strong combination but that did lead to victory.

Narvaez was able to stay with him by using a defensive strategy most of the fight. He frequently kept his hands clenched near his head to avoid many strong punches and appeared content to let the bout go the distance. Narvaez also showed a reluctance to go on the offensive as he averaged 24 punches thrown per round, 36 fewer than the average.

“I expected him to wear me down, but that wasn’t the case,” Donaire said. “The moment that I hit him hard, he just didn’t want to take his chances.”

Narvaez’s technical approach had some in the crowd booing at times but they cheered wildly when Donaire began landing some uppercuts late in the 10th. The booing returned in the 11th as Donaire rarely landed any punches until the final seconds of the round.

In the 12th round, Donaire landed a strong combination but could not finish. Narvaez briefly had him against the ropes but Donaire escaped though in the final seconds he flailed against the ropes.

Earlier, Miguel Garcia (27-0, 23 KOs) remained unbeaten and successfully retained his NABF featherweight title with a fourth-round knockout of challenger Juan Carlos Martinez (17-13-1). Garcia won after knocking Martinez out three times before the fight was stopped with 14 seconds remaining in the fourth round.

Looks like undefeated two-time world champion and current WBO Jr. Bantamweight Champion Omar Narvaez of Argentina isn’t having any weight issues as he sits down for healthy lunch as he prepares to take on WBC/WBO World Bantamweight Champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire in his title defense, on Saturday in the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Madison Square Garden, Donaire vs Narvaez will be televised by HBO Boxing After Dark.

Narvaez and his team are at the Affinia Hotel on Seventh Avenue in Manhatthan in front of Madison Square Garden. His team consists of trainer Ruperto Ruiz, his brothers Jorge and Daniel, Dr. Franco De Turris, manager Osvaldo Rivero and Esteban Livera, owner of Luna Park.

Narvaez’s team reports that he trains twice a day. Aerobics in the morning and boxing in the afternoon. He is close to the weight and in good physical condition.

NEW YORK — Nonito Donaire is probably a few wins away from a potential showdown with Yuriorkis Gamboa becoming a realistic possibility.

And as Juan Manuel Lopez’s upset loss to Orlando Salido reminded us earlier this year, that’s entirely too far down the line to start getting all that excited about a Donaire-Gamboa bout. But count Donaire among those that hope the intriguing matchup materializes.

“The Filipino Flash” has watched Gamboa’s development closely and is eager to test himself against an unbeaten boxer Donaire considers special, yet flawed.

“He’s an amazing fighter,” Donaire said. “He has speed, power. I’ll be excited if I get the opportunity, because he’s a good fighter. I see a lot of flaws, but sometimes you see flaws and you can’t react to it. It’s different in that ring.

“But I’ve seen some flaws in him, something I can take advantage of. It’s ‘The Cyclone’ versus the ‘The Flash.’ We’ll see who’s faster, but I think ‘The Flash’ can take cyclones all day.”

Even if the Cuban-born Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs), a Miami resident, and Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs), a native Filipino who resides in San Leandro, Calif., continue winning, getting them in the same weight class could become an obstacle.

Donaire intends to move up from 118 to 122 pounds if he wins against Argentina’s Omar Narvaez (35-0-2, 19 KOs) on Saturday night in New York, but Gamboa said after defeating Daniel Ponce De Leon (41-4, 34 KOs) on Sept. 10 in Atlantic City that he’s moving up from featherweight to at least 130 pounds in his next fight. Gamboa didn’t rule out an immediate move to lightweight, either, which would separate him and Donaire by three weight classes.

The 28-year-old Donaire doesn’t think, however, that an eventual move to lightweight will be problematic.

“I’m definitely growing,” said Donaire, who stands 5-foot-7, an inch taller than Gamboa. “[In late August] I was at 147 and I wasn’t fat. If given the opportunity to put some weight on, it’ll be easy for me to do it.”

“I’m in the big leagues now” exclaimed World Bantamweight Champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire after a visit to the famed ‘Mecca of Boxing’ Madison Square Garden in New York City Monday night. Donaire, who is making his New York debut, spoke about the ‘New York city lights’, ‘the millions of people in the Big Apple’ and ‘the excitement he feels’ about his upcoming battle against undefeated Omar Narvaez of Argentina, Saturday, October 22 in the Theater at Madison Square Garden. Promoted by Top Rank, in association with Madison Square Garden, Donaire vs Narvaez will be televised by HBO Boxing After Dark.

Earlier today, Nonito visited the Jersey City Public Library / Greenville Branch Auditorium to speak to a group from the Filipino School of New York and New Jersey. Nonito fielded questions and took photos with the kids before he was off to training in final preparations for Saturday’s World Bantamweight Championship defense.

Narvaez spoke briefly about his upcoming challenge of WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire on October 22nd at MSG’s WaMu Theater in New York City. Although Narvaez is boxing’s longest reigning world champion having held titles at 112 or 115 since 2002 and he made 16 defenses of his WBO flyweight title alone, he is given little chance to win by most pundits, but that doesn’t bother Narvaez at all.

“I know that I am the underdog for this fight. These are the kind of fights that I want to be in because this will bring out the best in me. It would have been nice if we could have fought when we both were world champions at 112 pounds but that is not the case. Everyone is going to find out that I too am fast and strong, as well. I’m going to surprise a lot of people October 22nd. I’m coming to bring those titles back to Argentina,” promised Narvaez as the large crowd at Luna Park Stadium erupted in a roar of support.

Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire (26-1, 18 KOs), who faces Omar “El Huracán” Narvaez (35-0-2, 23 KOs) on Oct. 22 in New York City, said he’ll put on a performance that matches the city’s size and stature, and the venue’s prominence. “I’m ready to entertain as much as I did in my last fight,” he said during a teleconference to discuss the fight at Madison Square Garden, a venue he said matches the city’s stature. “My goal is to go out there and give everything.”

In his last fight, on Feb. 19, Donaire knocked out Fernando Montiel (46-3-2, 36KOs) with what his promoter Bob Arum said was “one most devastating punches I have ever seen.”

The big knockouts come from paying attention to the small things, said Donaire, the WBO and WBC bantamweight champion.

“I see every little thing in there and every little detail,” the 28-year-old said.

Narvaez, 36, is extremely smart in the ring, aggressive without being reckless, said Donaire, who fought a total of 17 rounds in his last four fights, all of which he won by knockout.

“He knows how to take a fight into the later rounds,” he said. “We’re ready.”

Robert Garcia, Donaire’s trainer, acknowledged that his fighter has height and reach advantages and said there would be a lot to be learned in the bout’s early stages.

“We’ll see what he’s got in the first few rounds,” Garcia said
