CEBU, Philippines – WBO Vice President for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo said the disgraceful incident involving a fight between Filipino boxer Jonriel “Quadro Alas” Casimero and Argentina’s hometown idol Luis Alberto “El Mosquito” Lazarte has dealt a ‘blackeye to boxing.’

“Well, boxing is a contact sport but the incident really brings blackeye to the sport. It could be controlled with sportsmanship. It’s just the fans of Lazarte we’re so emotional. They couldn’t accept the defeat of their hometown idol that’s why they probably acted that way,” said Panoncillo, who was among those who greeted Casimero upon his arrival the other day at the Mactan International Airport.

“But for what had happened, we should not punish the whole of Argentina” added Panoncillo, who is among the major awardees during the 30th Spotswriters Association of Cebu-San Miguel Corporation (SAC-SMC) on March 3 at The Terraces of Ayala Center-Cebu.

Even Casimero’s stablemates at the International Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (IPI)-owned Omega Boxing Gym were fuming mad over the plight of their comrade.”What they did was despicable,” said super bantamweight contender Charlie Pucdol.

“Had I been there at the venue, I would have fought back because I couldn’t stand what they did to him,” butted Virgilio Silvano, an aspiring light flyweight.

In recounting their harrowing ordeal, Casimero’s business manager Sammy “Don King” Gello-ani said it was their presence of mind that kept them away from further harm.

“When the fans attacked us, it was a good thing that we have presence of mind. We did not retaliate. Had we fought back, it could have been worse,” said Gello-ani.

At the height of the melee where chairs, punches, botttles and other hard objects were flying all over the arena, Casimero said he doesn’t know what to do.

While being kicked several times, Casimero said he just crawled his way out until he was able to hide under the ring where he stayed for almost an hour before he was taken out to safety by security personnel.

“I was already tired after the fight. At that point, I couldn’t think of anything other than to protect myself. I was lucky enough to get out of harm’s way,” said the 22-year-old Casimero.

Casimero stopped Lazarte early in the 10th round to claim the vacant IBF light flyweight title last Friday night (Saturday morning Phl time) at the Club Once Unidos in Mar del Plata of Argentina’s capital  Buenos Aires.

But even before referee Eddie Claudio of New York could formally declare the winner, a swarm of angry Argentine fans flocked to the ring and attacked Casimero and his team. The IBF officials and some cooler heads who tried to prevent the situation from getting worse were not spared by the wrath of irate fans.

Nevertheless, Gello-ani said they are still willing to go back to Argentina but it depends on who are they going to face and where the fight would be held.

Meanwhile, Casimero left yesterday for his hometown in Ormoc City to attend the wake of his younger brother Gerald.

Casimero wanted beforehand to use part of his US$15,000 prize money for the hospital treatment of his brother but could no longer do so as the 17-year-old Gerald died of heart ailment a day before Casimero left the country or the Lazarte fight.

“Despite the tragedy that befell his family, Casimero was still able to win the world title for the Filipino people. That only shows how strong and courageous a person he is,” said Gello-ani, who reveals that Casimero’s next fight would either be in Japan or Las Vegas.

Mandaue City, Cebu – The World Boxing Organization (WBO) sponsored a basketball tournament involving teenagers from four barangays in the city of Mandaue. This is part of the organization’s program to encourage kids to stay in school, get into sports and say no to drugs.

The tournament was opened Saturday morning at the basketball court of the Greenhills Subdivision and Leisure Park. Aspiring cagers from Yocra,Agro, Greenhills and Kasuntingan were divided into Gold,Red,Black and Blue teams.

WBO Asia-Pacific Vice President Leon Panoncillo spoke about their Kids Drug Free Philippines program and emphasized the need for young Filipinos to continue their studies and avoid the temptations of illegal drugs.

The event was held with the cooperation of the Greenhills homeowners association lead by Basil Raya and Sammy Gello-ani’s SGG Promotions. Also in attendance were international referee Atty. Danrex Tapdasan and former WBO interim lt.flyweight titlist Johnriel Casimero.

The sportswriters in attendance were the judges in choosing the best team muse.

The winner of the tournament will each get one mountain bicycle.

The program is a yearly WBO activity aimed at taking the youth off drugs and giving them an avenue to get involved in sports rather than see themselves get into vices.

For this year, a basketball tournament is being organized by the WBO among the youth in Mandaue City, with the winning team and runners up getting special prizes from the WBO.

“The WBO is reaching out to the youth in the poor neighborhood with our outreach program. A tournament will be held not just for one day but for a month, this program will take them off the street and into the court,” said WBO Asia Pacific head Leon Panoncillo, who announced that members of the winning team will each get a bicycle as their prize.

WBO’s multi-awarded manager and promoter Sammy Gello-ani has already laid the groundwork for the said activity, and has gathered the teams that will participate in the month-long tournament.

“We will send a message to parents to remind their kids to stay off drugs.. Our message will surely be heard throughout Asia. The generosity of our president not only will help feed the children but to give them something to look forward to in winning a grand prize which every student or youth would surely would want which is a bicycle that they could use as source of transportation to school. Filipino-American World Boxing Organization flyweight champion Brian Viloria punched his way to an eighth round technical knockout victory over Mexican challenger Giovani Segura to keep his 112-pound crown and earn his place in the roster of the finest pound-for-pound fighters in the world Sunday at the half-filled Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.

Sticking to his game plan of attack-counter-attack all throughout that confused Segura, the 31 year-old Viloria, known in the international boxing world as the “Hawaiian Punch,” proved true to his moniker by implanting a big mouse above Segura’s right eyebrow right in the second round mostly on left hooks that developed into a huge hematoma as the fight wore on.

That same left shot staggered the challenger going into the last 20 seconds of the eighth and as the Mexican’s body looked to turn around led referee Samuel Viruet embraced Segura signaling the fight is over gifting the Ilocos Norte-born and Waipahu, Hawaii-based fighter his 30th victory, his 17th via stoppage in his six-year pro-career.

More importantly, with the win, Viloria accomplished what he really had wanted – barging into the list of pound-for-pound best; an honor he has long been targeting but continued slipping from his hands due to a roller-coaster career.

Viloria, a former amateur standout and a member of the United States Olympic team in 2000, actually, was punishing with volley of left and right combinations earlier in the period before landing the finishing kick to end what he himself described as the best fight of his career, sending Segura, ranked ninth in the world’s best pound-for-pound, to the nearby Medical City Hospital for further checkup.

“Yeah, that was my best fight in my career, Viloria told media men during the post-fight press conference. “It was even better than Miranda ((Mexico’s Julio Cesar Miranda from whom he stole the title last July).”

“It was easy, yes but only because I trained hard for this fight and I stuck to my game plan by not going into the ropes. I just met him in the center of the ring and avoided turning the fight into a brawl in which he (Segura) is at his best,” he said.

“He has heavy hands, but he didn’t hurt me. I often saw his punches, prepared to avoid them, then counter-attack,” he said drawing concurrence from his American manager Gary Gittelsohn.

“That was a fight between the two very best flyweights in the world and it’s a pity the U.,S. missed hosting it,” Gittelsohn said, who added, his ward might stick it out in the 112-pound category although plans are also afoot to invade higher divisions.

“We’ll stick it out in the flyweight division, but we might also try to test the waters, say in the 115-pound class,” the manager said.

Except for two rounds – the first and second, which Malaya Business Insight scored as draw, all rounds were Viloria’s convincingly.

Viloria wound up with a slight cut in his left eyebrow inflicted in the second round and a swollen left cheek but was never really threatened as he repeatedly pummelled the former WBO and World Boxing Association light-flyweight kingpin with crispy lefts and rights to the elation of the crowd that included Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao and former two-division champ Gerry Penalosa. Judge Danrex Tapdasan saw the fight, 69-64 at the time of the stoppage , judge Ulysses Glen,70-63, and judge Harry Davis, 68-65, all in favor of Viloria.

Pasig City – In an incredible display of skill, heart and sheer will power, Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria successfully defended his WBO world flyweight title against Mexican “Aztec Warrior” Giovani Segura at the Ynares Sports Center.

Segura, who attacked from a southpaw stance, had Viloria on the back foot in the opening minutes of the fight but Viloria’s left hook began to find its range going into the second round. Viloria stunned Segura with a right hand lead followed by a left hook and had Segura on the ropes twice. Viloria bled from a cut on the left eyebrow but Segura looked dazed and confused at the end of the round.

A hematoma started to form on the Mexican’s right temple as Viloria’s left landed with impunity in the subsequent rounds. Segura continued to press the action but missed wildly. His power was evident as Viloria covered up and winced as Segura’s hooks connected.

The partisan crowd cheered for every punch Viloria threw. Past the halfway mark, the swelling on the right side of Segura’s head got bigger and his right eye would eventually get affected and started to close as well. Segura was still dangerous but Viloria, with blood continuing to leak from his cut, pressed his advantage by landing hard shots.

The crowd was in a frenzy sensing a Viloria victory. Segura faded and after the 7th, referee Samuel Viruet checked and talked with the Mexican cornermen.

Segura answered the bell for the 8th round but Viloria pounced on him with a brutal volley prompting Referee Viruet to save the challenger from further punishment. Official time – 0:29.

Viloria (30-3, 17 KO’s) finished with a swollen left cheek aside from his cut. But he made sure he would retain his title in front of boxing icon Manny Pacquiao and former two-division world champ Gerry Penalosa and lustfully cheering fans who trooped to Pasig on a Sunday morning.

The scores prior to the stoppage had Viloria ahead – Judge Danrex Tapdasan – 69-64, judge Ulysses Glen – 70-63 and judge Harry Davis – 68-65.

Segura (28-2-1, 24 KO’s) was ranked ninth by Ring magazine in their pound for pound list prior to this bout. Viloria’s win makes three Filipino boxers on that prestigious list by year’s end.

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel, announced today the referee and judges who will work on the WBO flyweight title bout between Flyweight champion Brian Viloria and former Junior Flyweight titlist Giovani Segura this Sunday, December 11 in the Yñares Sports Arena in Manila, Phillipines in a Promociones Zanfer and Saved by the Bell Promotions presentation.

Valcarcel reported that for the first title defense of Viloria (29-3, 16 KOs) against the Mexican Segura (28-1-1, 24 KOs), the referee will be Samuel Viruet, from the United States. Viloria won the 112 pounds belt on July 16 when he beat Mexican Julio Cesar Miranda by unanimous decision. Segura reigned in the WBO 108 division from 2010 to 2011.

Meanwhile, the judges for Viloria vs Segura are: Danrex Tapdasan, from Phillipines, Harry Davis, from Canada, and Ulysess Glen, from United States. WBO supervisor for this fight will be Leon Panoncillo Jr.

Rugged Danilo Pena has lost by a 7th round technical decision in his battle for the WBO Interim bantamweight title against world No. 1 Phuengluang Sor Singyu in Sukhothai, Thailand.

With the world title now vacant AJ “Bazooka” Banal who is ranked No.2 is in line for a title shot against Phungluang.

WBO Asia Pacific vice president and fight supervisor Leon Panoncillo told the Manila Standard that Pena suffered “a severely cut eye after an accidental clash of heads in the seventh round” and referee Sawaeng Thaweekoon was forced to go to the scorecards of the three judges after ring doctor Vichair Oncam recommended the stoppage to prevent further damage to the Filipino’s eye.

Judge Paradon Sangkrongkaew scored it 69 – 64 and Chewing Krutket and Kiethsak Sitti 68-66. The end came at 1:14 of round seven.

Panoncillo reported that it was “a very competitive fight” and Pena threw a lot of punches but missed several while Phuengluang “landed more of the cleaner shots.”

In a couple of the early rounds Pena hurt the champion but was unable capitialize. However, the champion continued to hurt Pena more solid upper cuts and hard body shots.

With the win Phuengluang improved to 39-1 with 26 knockouts whiole droped to 25-11-2 with 10 knockouts.

WBO/WBC #1 feather Chonlatarn Or Piriyapinyo (40-0, 24 KOs) successfully retained his WBO Asia-Pacific 126 lb title as he scored a third round TKO over Ryuta Miyagi (21-7-4, 16 KOs) on Tuesday at Khunyuan Airfield in Maehongson, Thailand. Japanese Miyagi who ever defeated two former WBA 122 lb title holders as Ryol Li Lee and Yoddamrong Sithyodthong, started well as he aggressively hunted counterpuncher Chonlatarn, launching hard combinations and dominating all of the first two rounds. The turning point occurred in round three when the champion landed a well-time left hook which dropped his contender, then he viciously hunted his foe and floored the Japanese twice more, forcing referee to stop the bout at 2:57. In other action, ABCO female 126lb title holder Sainamdoi Pitaklo-ngen (11-1-1) scored an eighth round unanimous decision over Kaenpetch Manoprungroj. Thongtaeng Muangsima outpointed Keangsaklek Sakchaichok in a six round non-title bout. Also, Susu Sithjadaeng outpointed Tripetch Sor Poonsawat. Interim WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Angky Angkotta of Indonesia considers his loss to Jorge Arce on January 30, 2010 at Restaurante Arroyo in Mexico City to be controversial. “I abosorbed his strong punches, and he got exhausted in round seven, then he did the headbutt on purpose. I was injured on the temple, and the referee asked me to continue the bout, but the ring doctor insisted the referee to stop the fight,” Angkotta recalled from their first match which Arce won by technical decision. “I talked to Arce about a rematch, and he nodded. This is it!”

The Arce vs Angkotta rematch will take place in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, on November 26 for Arce’s WBO bantamweight title. “I will knock him out this time, and the bomb will explode in Mexico,” promised Angkotta, who is nicknamed ‘Time Bomb.’ “I will bring the WBO belt home for my daughter’s (Chilla) birthday this month. I will also present it as a Christmas and New Year’s gift for my country.”

On the other hand, Angkotta’s promoter Raja Sapta Oktohari has promised him a big event in Indonesia if Angkotta can bring the world title belt home. He plans to feature the first world title tripleheader in Indonesia with Angkota together with other Indonesian stars Chris John and Daud Yordan.

“Wish me luck,” said Angkotta who will depart to Mexico tomorrow.

It’s been a great WBO Convention for the Philippines with “Promoter of the Year” Sammy Gello-ani joined by two other boxers and a referee at the recently concluded WBO Awards ceremony in Puerto Rico.

WBO Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo told the Manila Standard that undefeated 22 year old Froilan “The Sniper” Saludar who has a record of 13-0-1 with 10 knockouts was named WBO Asia Pacific and WBO World Youth flyweight “Boxer of the Year.”

Saludar won the Asia Pacific title with a rousing 10th round TKO over Gabriel Pumar in an exciting title fight at the Island Cove Resort in Cavite telecast by AKTV IBC Channel 13 last August 6.

Saludar had earlier won the vacant Youth title with a sensational 1st round TKO over Thailand’s Liempetch Sor Veerapol on the top rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” also telecast on AKTV IBC Channel 13.

Undefeated 19 year old southpaw Jerwin Ancajas was named WBO Asia Pacific Youth bantamweight “Boxer of the Year” for winning the title by a unanimous ten round decision over Rex Tito last April 16.

World Boxing Organization Asia Pacific vice president Leon
Panoncillo has given the WBO Convention in Puerto Rico a
bright report on the achievements of the regional
organization the past year.

The consensus at the Convention was that Panoncillo’s
efforts in the Asia Pacific region had been marked by
success through 2011 and it was considered a banner year in
terms of WBO regional titles with the Philippines playing a
prominent role along with Thailand. China is considered an
emerging force in the region.

Panoncillo announced that the WBO was staging three times
as many title fights as other regional boxing organizations
such as the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation and the Pan
Asian Boxing Association and stated that this success
primarily due to the wholehearted support of the Philippines
and Thailand.

The WBO Asia Pacific vice president noted that the
organization is  continuing to grow and develop in the
Asia Pacific region. There have been indications this year
that Japan which previously recognized only the WBC and WBA
is changing its attitude towards the WBO

Panoncillo made special mention of the WBO Asia Pacific
Championships which held no less than 27 fights in 2011. He
also mentioned the newest creation which is a title belt for
the WBO Asia Pacific Youth Championships which has held ten
title fights    so far this year.

There was a total of some 59 championship fights in the
Asia Pacific region in 2011 with 21 WBO Oriental title
fights. Panoncillo revealed total revenues of $56,000.

The regional vice president said that many fighters were
benefiting from their support and involvement with the WBO
and that several Asian fighters who battled for regional
belts are moving up to fighting for and winning world
titles.

WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel was impressed with
Panoncillo’s performance that he appointed him as WBO
supervisor for the last title defense of welterweight
champion and pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao against
Shane Mosley.

Filipino boxer AJ “Bazooka” Banal won a bloody scrap, retaining his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific bantamweight title, with an eight-round technical decision over Canadian Tyson Cove in Cebu, Philippines.

It was a successful defense but complicated for Banal, who bled profusely from a dangerous cut on his right eyebrow after an unintentional clash of heads. Undoubtedly Banal landed the best punches of the fight, especially with combinations initiated by his right jabs, which were followed up by left hooks and right uppercuts.

Cove (15-2, 5KO’s) used a lot of dirty tricks and questionable tactics during the fight, but never lost any points. In the eighth round, the referee stopped the fight, based on the recommendation of the attending physician Dr. Jose Unabia, because Banal’s cut was too severe. The fight went to the scorecards. The scores were 73-79, 74-78, and 74-78 – all in favor Banal.

Banal, 22 years old and ranked by the four major governing bodies, raises his record to 25 wins, 1 loss, and 17 wins by knockout.

After the win, Banal expressed his desire to avenge the only loss of his career. Banal publicly challenged Panamanian Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion. In July of 2008, Concepcion defeated Banal in Cebu in a ​dramatic battle.

“I’m glad I held on to my WBO Asia Pacific title, and now I want to challenge Torito Concepcion,” said Banal to BoxingScene.com/NotiFight.com. “I hope he (Concepcion) gives me a rematch. Now I’m craving to be a better fighter and I want that fight to clear my record. My agent (Don Antonio L. Aldeguer) supports me and agrees.”

Negotiations for the Banal vs Concepcion II are already in progress.

The supervisor of the fight was WBO Vice-President Mr. Leon Panoncillo of Hawaii. The event was organized by ALA Boxing Promotions and televised in the Philippines by ABC CBN Sports.
