Boxing history was made in Copenhagen, Denmark Saturday night. Norwegian star Cecilia Brækhus (26-0, 7 KOs) became the first female boxer to unify a division by holding all four major titles simultaneously. The WBC, WBA & WBO Champion scored a unanimous decision victory over IBF Champion Ivana Habazin (13-2, 5 KOs) to become the undisputed welterweight queen. Cheered on by her loyal army of travelling Norwegian fans, Brækhus once again proved why she is the pound-for-pound female number one with a classy performance against the tenacious Habazin. All three judges scored the fight 100-90 in favour of ‘The First Lady.’

“I’ve been dreaming of this moment for a long time,” said Braekhus. “To become the first female boxer to unify a division is a huge achievement and something that I am extremely proud of. I would like to thank all the fans that travelled to Copenhagen to support me and Ivana for the part she played in this historic fight.”

Braekhus vs. Habazin

By Sauerland Promotions

Boxing history was made in Copenhagen, Denmark last night.

All three judges scored the fight 100-90 in favour of ‘The First Lady’.

‘’I’ve been dreaming of this moment for a long time,’’ said Brækhus. ‘’To become the first female boxer to unify a division is a huge achievement and something that I am extremely proud of. I would like to thank all the fans that travelled to Copenhagen to support me and Ivana for the part she played in this historic fight.’’

Said promoter Nisse Sauerland: ‘’Cecilia is a phenomenal athlete. Not only will she go down in history as the first female unified champion but it is our belief that she will be remembered as the greatest female boxer of all time.’’

Brækhus’ success was shared by Swedish stablemates Klara Svensson and Erik Skoglund, both of whom claimed titles at Team Sauerland’s Nordic Fight Night show.

‘The Swedish Princess’ Klara Svensson (14-0, 5 KOs) got her first taste of world glory. The 26 year-old from Malmo defeated Marie Riederer (15-2-1, 10 KOs) for the interim WBC Female World Light Welterweight title. The judges scored the fight 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91 for Svensson.

‘’This was the best performance of my career so far,’’ said Svensson. ‘’Riederer was very tough, I hit her with some big shots and she kept coming. Tonight I have shown that I belong at the top with the world’s elite and I’m ready to challenge for the regular title.’’

WBC, WBA & WBO female world welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus (25-0, 7 KOs) will attempt to make history on September 13 by becoming the first female boxer in any weight category to unify a division by holding all four major titles when she takes on IBF champion Ivana Habazin (13-1, 5 KOs) at TAP1 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Victory in Copenhagen would not only make Brækhus the first female boxer to hold all four titles simultaneously but also just the third boxer in history to have achieved this feat following Bernard Hopkins’ and Jermain Taylor’s middleweight reigns.

Cecilia Brækhus: This is a massive opportunity for me to cement my legacy as the best female boxer of all time.

Ivana Habazin: Cecilia is possibly the greatest female boxer of all time but it is time for her to experience what it feels like to lose.

The pound-for-pound queen is back. Cecilia Brækhus (24-0, 7 KOs) defends her WBC, WBA and WBO Female World Welterweight titles against Jessica Balogun (24-3, 12 KOs) on June 7th at the Sport and Congress Center in Schwerin, Germany.

The pair meet in a repeat of their 2012 contest and having previously shared a ring ‘’The First Lady’’ is aware of the threat posed by the German challenger.

‘’I have a lot of respect for Balogun. She is an explosive boxer with good technique and an unbelievable fighting spirit,’’ said Brækhus.

‘’She is one of the toughest female boxers around. In her last fight she moved up two weight divisions to face Christina Hammer, the WBO Female World Middleweight Champion, and pushed her for ten hard rounds.

‘’I am excited by the challenge. I look forward to testing myself against her once again. She gave me a good fight two years ago and I am expecting the same in Schwerin.’’

Since their first fight there has been a change of personnel in the Brækhus camp with the introduction of renowned German coach Otto Ramin.

Ramin will be in the Bergen boxer’s corner for the second time following an impressive points victory over Myriam Lamare in February.

‘’Otto is a fantastic coach,’’ said the Brækhus. ‘’We only had two months together before the Lamare fight. Since then we have got to know each other much better and have established a great relationship. We now have a really good understanding.

‘’In the gym we have been working on improving my strengths. I am natural boxer not a brawler so a lot of the focus has been on improving my movement and footwork. I believe we will see the benefit of this on June 7th.

‘’Everything has gone to plan. I feel good! I am in great shape and I can’t wait to get back in the ring and back to doing what I love.’’

Norwegian fans can watch Cecilia Brækhus defend her WBC, WBA and WBO World titles against Jessica Balogun live on Viasat 4 from 20.00.

UPDATED: Norway’s champion boxer Cecilia Brækhus successfully defended her titles over the weekend, after  winning her latest match against Myriam Lamare of France. It marked Brækhus’ 24th professional victory, boosted her plans for a new match in the US and set off more jubilation.sz9676b9-e1391336734871

“The only reason she (the 39-year-old Lamare) was still standing was her 20 years of experience,” Brækhus, age 32, told state broadcaster NRK’s website with a laugh late Saturday night.

Lamare literally put up quite a fight at the beginning of Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn, Denmark, but Brækhus held out and knocked her down during the seventh round. Lamare got up again, but NRK’s commentators claimed she was noticeably weaker and the match ended after 10 rounds.

Lamare smiled bravely afterwards and claimed she’d been through tougher matches, but she graciously praised her opponent’s performance. “Cecilia was very strong, and an incredibly good boxer,” Lamare told reporters. “For me, the time has come to step down. I wish Cecilia all the best in her career.”

Brækhus has a new coach, Otto Ramin, and she said the match reflected that they’d only worked together for six weeks, “but we have trained explosively, and that came through in the match,” Brækhus told NRK.

Ramin himself seemed satisfied with his new pupil, who retained her unofficial international title as the world’s “First Lady” of boxing. “She fought a very good match,” Ramin said. “She was smart and boxed wisely.”

Haven’t given up on a match against Holm
Now Brækhus seems more keen than ever to box at a title match in the US, and her promoter Nisse Sauerland told newspaper Aftenposten that they’re working once again to lure former champion Holly Holm back into the ring. Sauerland said Brækhus “deserves” to show what she can do in the US.

“We’re working to set up a match in Las Vegas or New York,” Sauerland said. “We have said, though, that we won’t send Cecilia to Holm’s hometown of Albuquerque.”

Saturday’s match played out once again in Denmark, since boxing is banned in Norway and Brækhus isn’t legally allowed to conduct her sport in her own homeland. There have been moves to change that and regardless, Brækhus, who grew up in Bergen,  said she thinks her future “looks very bright.” She was thrilled by the reaction of fans who traveled to Frederikshavn to see her in action.

“I have had many tough matches, but the support here is great,” said Brækhus, adding that she already was looking forward to new training sessions. “To stand up in the ring with that kind of support behind me is just unreal.”

Today in Norway, WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus kicked off fight week with a crowded press conference at the Viasat offices in Oslo. The pound-for-pound number one faces Myriam Lamare on Saturday night at the Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn.

”I’m really looking forward to this fight,” said Braekhus. ”I haven’t been in the ring for a while so I’m excited to be back and facing such a quality opponent. It will be a great way to start the year!     ”Since my last fight I have been working with a new trainer Otto Ramin. Although I was sad to leave my old team, it has been good to be able to train with someone who is able to focus on me full time.

cecilia braekhus (4)

”I am expecting a very tough fight. Lamare is fit and hungry. She has said that she has been studying all of my fights, and I hear she is arriving early and bringing her own chef, so she is definitely coming to Frederikshavn to win.   ”I feel good! My training has gone very well. I am in a new and exciting position with a new team around me. I am looking forward to a great fight against a tough opponent.”

cecilia braekhus (6)Braekhus was joined on the podium by her new coach Otto Ramin and promoter Nisse Sauerland.

Said Ramin: ”It has been fun to work with Cecilia. She loves boxing, she is extremely professional and she is dedicated to learning new things and getting better. She is a three-time world champion for a reason, she is the best in the world but I believe she can still improve. We’ve been focusing on her strengths – her great technical and tactical skills – and we’re keen to make her even better.”

Said Sauerland: ”Lamare is possibly the toughest opponent out there for Cecilia at the moment. She is an experienced fighter and a proven champion. There is no doubt that she is taking this fight seriously. She will be staying in a separate flat away from the city to avoid distractions and is even bringing her own chef. This will be an interesting test for the ‘First Lady’.”

Braekhus vs. Lamare tops an action packed Nordic Fight Night bill at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn. The show will be broadcast live on Viasat 4 from 19.30-00.30. Tickets are available via arenanord.dk.

Norwegian boxers Tim-Robin Lihaug (5-1, 4 KOs) and Alexander Hagen (3-0) both believe WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (23-0, 7 KOs) will prove too much for Myriam Lamare (22-3, 10 KOs) when the pair meet at the Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn on February 1st.

”I predict that Cecilia will win on points or stop Lamare in the later rounds,” said Lihaug. ”She is the greatest female boxer of all time and I think that she will be too good and too clever for Lamare. To win, all Cecilia must do is go out there, be her self and execute her game plan.”

”I think there’s a big possibility that Cecilia will win by knockout,” said Hagen. ”She is younger than Lamare, so will be able to use this to her advantage and lay on the pressure from the very first bell. Although Lamare is very experienced and knows her way around the ring I believe that Cecilia will be too explosive for her.”

Lihaug and Hagen will both be in action alongside the pound-for-pound number one at the Arena Nord. A travelling army of fans are expected to make the trip over to Frederikshavn to cheer on the Norwegian trio. The increased popularity of boxing in Norway is something that both men attribute to the ”First Lady”.

Said Lihaug: ”Cecilia is a great ambassador for boxing in Norway. She is one of the most famous athletes in the whole country and everyone just loves her. Boxing is becoming more and more popular and I believe the biggest reason for this is Cecilia.”

Said Hagen: ”Cecilia has done a very good job for boxing in Norway. She’s paved the way for everyone else. The fact that she has made it to the top, despite being from this little country called Norway which forbids professional boxing, is very inspiring for me and all the boxers in Norway.”

The Nordic Fight Night will be broadcast on Viasat 4 in Norway. Tickets are available at arenanord.dk.

The Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn has been postponed by two weeks due to an eye injury sustained by WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (23-0, 7 KOs). The pound-for-pound number one will now face Myriam Lamare (22-3, 10 KOs) at the Arena Nord on February 1.

“When it comes down to a fighter´s health, we cannot take any risks,” said promoter Nisse Sauerland. “The doctors have ordered Cecilia to sit out practice for ten days, which made it impossible for her to be in top shape on January 18. At the highest level, losing two weeks in the middle of your preparation is a nightmare. Against a world-class opponent like Lamare, Cecilia needs to be at 100 percent, not 90, 80 or 70.

“We want to apologize to the fans who have already bought tickets and hope that they will be able to join us on the new date. All fights will remain the same.”

Said Braekhus: “I am very sorry about the postponement but there is nothing I could do about it. I was gutted when I picked up the injury in sparring. I´ve been forced to postpone fights before, like against Anne Sophie Mathis due to my tonsillitis. Believe me, it is the worst feeling in the world. You feel like you let down your fans. So I was very disappointed at first but I am relieved that the postponement is for only two weeks and that my team has been able to set the new date quickly.

“I hope that all my fans will still come over to Frederikshavn and support me. Lamare is a very tough opponent, I couldn´t fight her without a proper preparation. My fitness and my hard training have always given me an edge over my opponents. I´ll now take a little break and then return to practice to get in shape for Lamare.”

Tickets for the January 18 date can be refunded until January 10.

WBA, WBC & WBO female welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs) will defy a WBC order to face Holly Holm and instead take on 45-year-old Mia St. John (47-12-2, 18 KOs) at the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark on April 13. The WBC had told Braekhus’ promoter Sauerland Event and Holm’s promoter Frequez Productions to commence negotiations with a pending purse bid if the parties are unable to reach an agreement. WBO, WBC & WBa Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs) lived up to her billing as boxing’s “First Lady” with a spectacular points victory over French star Anne Sophie Mathis (26-3, 22 KOs). After ten exciting rounds, she was ahead 97-93 on all three cards. “This is the happiest day of my life,” she said afterwards. “Mathis was very strong, the toughest opponent of my career, but I found a way to Credit: Photo Wende beat her. This is my biggest win ever.”

With 2,345 fans in attendance – at least 550 of them from Norway – at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Braekhus used her superior boxing skills to stay out of harm’s way, although Mathis had her moments. But Braekhus cleverly blocked her attacks and landed punches on her own – single shots as well as combinations. In the seventh, she even wobbled Mathis, but she bounced back, and it remained an exciting encounter until the very end.

“Cecilia fought a great fight,” Mathis said. “She is very fast and a very good boxer.” Asked about a potential meeting with Holly Holm, whom Mathis had knocked out cold last December, she answered: “Braekhus is better than Holm. She is faster, has better movement and better boxing skills.”

Promoter Nisse Sauerland praised Cecilia after “the fight of her life.” He said: “Cecilia left no doubts that she is the best female boxer out there. Mathis was very strong, very dangerous, but Cecilia proved her class in impressive fashion. This was a fantastic fight.”

In the co-featured main event, Patrick Nielsen defended his WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title with a clear points victory over Jose Yebes. Dennis Ceylan also celebrated a successful professional debut, stopping Artsem Abmiotka in the second round. Erik Skoglund continued his winning streak with a points victory over Ivan Maslov, while Torben Keller outpointed Laszlo Szekeres. Ahmed Kaddour also defeated Max Maxwell on points.

The stage is finally set for the “Pacquiao-Mayweather” of women´s boxing. WBA, WBC & WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (20-0, 5 KOs) and French KO queen Anne Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22 KOs) today arrived in Frederikshavn. On Saturday night, they will collide at the Nordic Fight Night at Arena Nord. The First Lady will be counting on some special support. Nine-time German coach of the year Ulli Wegner, who also trains World Boxing Organization (WBO) Super-Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham, WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck and International Boxing Federation (IBF) Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez, will be in her corner.

However, when she punches, she makes a lot of mistakes and it will be crucial for Cecilia to make her pay. It will be a sensational fight for the fans and I am convinced that we will be victorious.”

Braekhus was also optimistic. “I have been waiting for this fight for a long time, I am glad the time has finally come. The training went very well, I am ready to defend my titles on Saturday.”

On September 22, the First Lady will take on French KO queen Anne Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22 KOs) at the Nordic Fight Night in Frederikshavn. “The training has been going very well,” she said. “As always, we have had perfect conditions. (Picture: Viasat Norway) Unbeaten WBA / WBC / WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (20-0, 5 KOs) and Anne Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22 KOs) conducted an open-air work-out today in front of Oslo´s Central Station. Hundreds of fans were in attendance to watch the First Lady – a national hero in Norway – working the pads with coach Georg Bramowski. “It´s great to be in Oslo,” Braekhus said. “This is a great place to hold a public work-out. My training has been going very well. This is the biggest fight of my life, so we have been working really hard. It was also very inspiring to see Mathis. She looks fit and ready. But I am fit and ready, too, and I will defend my titles at Arena Nord on September 22. I look forward to fighting in Frederikshavn.”

Mathis, who only did some light shadow boxing, is convinced she will take all three world titles to France after their clash at Arena Nord. “I have a lot of respect for Braekhus,” the French powerhitter told the Norwegian media. “But I am 100 percent convinced that I will win. She is a technical boxer and not a big puncher. I have a lot more power.”

Meanwhile, Nisse Sauerland is thrilled to promote “the biggest fight out there.” He said: “This is the Pacquiao-Mayweather of women’s boxing and it´s happening. Cecilia is a three-time world champ, she is undefeated with amazing skills, while Mathis travelled all the way to Albuquerque to brutally knock out Holly Holm last year.

It will be an unforgettable battle at Arena Nord. Mathis has tremendous power but it won´t help her. Cecilia will outbox her, just like she has outboxed everyone else she has ever been in the ring with.”

Tickets for the Nordic Fight Night are available at www.arenanord.dk. Also in action will be WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Champion Patrick Nielsen (15-0, 8 KOs), who makes his first title defence against Jose Yebes (11-2-1, 5 KOs) of Spain.

Some 20 miles east of Berlin, WBA / WBC / WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (20-0, 5 KOs) has been sweating like never before. The First Lady is pushing herself to the limit in Kienbaum, an ultra modern training camp base that hosted many German athletes prior to the 2012 Olympic Games. She is determined to be in the shape of her life against French KO Queen Anne Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22 KOs).

The two stand-out fighters will battle out women´s boxing supremacy in Frederikshavn on September 22. “I love and hate Kienbaum both at the same time,” Braekhus said. “It´s in the middle of no-where, so it´s pretty boring and all you can do is train, train, train. It´s a bit of a hell to be honest and incredibly exhausting. But on the other hand, that´s exactly what I need before a fight. The solitude and the tough physical exercises make me very strong. It will ultimately help me on September 22 when I need to be at the top of my game to defeat Mathis.”

There are exciting times coming up for Braekhus´ training group. On August 25, “King” Arthur Abraham will challenge WBO Super-Middleweight Champion Robert Stieglitz at the o2 World in Berlin. On September 15, IBF Cruiserweight Champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez makes his mandatory defence against Troy Ross in Bamberg. And one week later, Braekhus intends to make the fight of her life. “There are some big fights coming up, so everybody is fired up and really excited,” she said. “That´s good because the concentration and the focus in practice has never been higher. We are all on a mission and hopefully we can clinch three big victories for our team.”

Cecilia Braekhus, the WBO, WBA and WBC female welterweight champion came out blazing to score a unanimous decision over contender Jessica “The Hammer” Balogun (22-1) through ten hard-fought rounds of action at the Herning Kongrescenter in Herning, Denmark last night.

The judges scored the bout 99-92, 97-93, 97-93 in favor of Braekhus who exhibited much better boxing skills than her opponent. The previously undefeated Balogun, from Aachen, Germany, was a game opponent, however, who kept on coming despite Braekhus’ evident dominance. This led to some rounds that have been characterized as “messy,” but Braekhus’ superior ring generalship kept her in control of the fight to take the win.

Braekhus, a Columbian-born fighter who resides in Bergen, Norway, is considered pound-for-pound one of the best female boxers in the world. Her record stands at a perfect 20-0 with five wins by way of knockout. In recent outings she has defeated such boxing luminaries as Jill Emery (2011) and Chevelle Hallback (2011) with similar results.

boxingCecilia Braekhus (20-0, 5 KOs) defended her WBA/WBC/WBO Female Welterweight Titles at the Nordic Fight Night in Herning, Denmark on Saturday night, beating highly-rated Jessica Balogun (22-2, 10 KOs) on points. The First Lady was ahead 99-92, 97-93 and 97-93 on the scorecards. “Jessica was a tough opponent, we knew each other very well, but I did what we had trained for and I am happy about the win,” Braekhus said. “This was a good victory for me.”

Braekhus stamped her authority on the battle early, landing good one-two combinations and uppercuts. Balogun kept pressing but had most attacks absorbed by the First Lady´s defense. In the later rounds, Braekhus turned it on again and showed her superior boxing skills as she cruised to a clear points victory. “This was a great performance against a very tough challenger,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “Now Cecilia will go on vacation, take a rest and then defend her title collection against the winner of the Holm-Mathis fight in what will be the female clash of the year..

Also in Herning, IBF Light Heavyweight Title contender Karo Murat clinched a seventh-round TKO victory over Sandro Siproshvili, while Luke Blackledge scored a fourth-round KO win over Mads Larsen. Team Sauerland regrets to inform boxing fans that the March 17 show at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn has been postponed to April 21 after WBO / WBA / WBC Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus has been flattened by tonsillitis. While preparing for the hotly-anticipated showdown with French power-puncher Anne Sophie Mathis, the “First Lady” fell sick.

“We are very sorry we have to postpone the second Nordic Fight Night but unfortunately things like this happen in boxing,” promoter Nisse Sauerland said. “Cecilia is taking antibiotics and cannot train for eight days, which is impossible to make up for in such a crucial period of the preparation. The only positive note today is that we have already confirmed April 21 as the new date together with Viasat and Arena Nord. The card will remain the same, with Braekhus-Mathis and Nielsen-Vega the headliners. Torben Keller, Reda Zam Zam and Erik Skoglund will also be in action.”

Said Braekhus: “I am very sorry for all my fans who have already bought tickets. I would have loved to fight on March 17 but the doctors would not allow me to train for eight days. That is a huge blow for me because I was really looking forward to March 17. I know that so many fans from Norway have already bought tickets to support me in the biggest fight of my life. I am glad that Team Sauerland has already found a new date. I will return to training as soon as possible and then be in top shape on April 21.”

Speaking from her training base in Nancy, Mathis stated: “I wish Cecilia a speedy recovery. I was ready to beat her on March 17 and I am ready to beat her on April 21. It gives her five more weeks to look at the titles before I take them to France.”

Patrick Nielsen will now have to wait until April 21 to take on Gaston Vega in a clash for the vacant WBA Intercontinental Middleweight Title. “I feel sorry for Cecilia and hope she gets well soon,” he said. “Personally, I don´t mind whether I win the WBA Intercontinental Title
on March 17 or April 21. The more time I spend in the gym, the better I get. This is bad news for Vega. He is going down.”

All tickets purchased for March 17 remain valid for April 21 but can be returned by email ( info@arenanord.dk ) or by phone (+45 9845 9191).
