Arce vs Mercedes is a Possibility for Feb. 18, Says Rivera

Juan Mercedes (26-3, 17 KOs), ranked at number four by the WBO at bantamweight, may land a title shot against Mexico’s Jorge ‘Travieso’ Arce, according to Mercedes’ promoter Peter Rivera of PR Best Boxing Promotions. Arce was scheduled to have a rematch with Lorenzo Parra, but the WBO rejected the fight. The sanctioning body refused to approve Parra on the basis of him not being ranked in the top fifteen of the WBO. Arce returns on February 18th in Durango, Mexico.

“Mercedes is rated under the WBO, so he can challenge Jorge Arce in February. There is a chance,” Rivera said.

Meanwhile, the Dominican boxer, who resides in Puerto Rico, was surprised by the announcement from Rivera.

“A fight with Arce would be phenomenal. If Peter said something like that … it’s because something good is there. In 2012 I want to become world champion,” Mercedes said.
